More international students will boost region's economy, says Joyce
![]()
International students could be worth $19 million to the Taranaki economy by 2025 under plans to expand the sector were launched this week.
At present there are around 450 international tertiary and secondary level students in the region, annually contributing about $9m to the economy.
But the Taranaki International Education Strategy, launched in New Plymouth on Tuesday by Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce, aims to grow that number to 750 students within a decade.
Nine secondary and tertiary education providers in Taranaki, including Witt, have partnered with Venture Taranaki to develop the strategy, with Education New Zealand contributing $162,000 over the next two years to get it under way.
International education brings $2.85 billion to the national economy each year, and supports 30,000 jobs across the country. The government's target is to increase the value of the industry to $5b by 2025.
Joyce said the National government was keen to push international students to look at the regions for study options.
"It's currently quite dominated by Auckland and Canterbury and we want to see further development in regional areas."
Joyce said growing the international education sector in New Zealand would have a number of benefits.
"They obviously bring income and economic benefit while they're here, that's important but that's not the whole story," he said during a function at the Pacific Hotel Management School in Bell Block.
"When these young people go home they become ambassadors for not just New Zealand, but the region that they've studied in."
He said he'd met alumni who studied in New Zealand under the Colombo Plan in the 1960s and 1970s who were now senior public officials in their own countries and "are still raving about their time they had in New Zealand forty years ago studying".
"So they become evangelists if you like, or ambassadors for our country."
And with up to 39,000 Chinese students coming to study in New Zealand each year, there was now a sizeable group of young Chinese entrepreneurs with a strong link here, Joyce said.
"That can only be good for our country."
International students also provided invaluable cultural benefits for Kiwi youngsters, Joyce said.
"It's the connectedness - it's what those students bring to the Kiwi students when they study alongside them."
"[International students] are great for the students they are here to study alongside because for New Zealand's future, our young people will be more internationally connected than we are today which means their need to better understand cultures, particularly through the Asia-Pacific region - so that just helps with their education."
The Taranaki International Education Strategy was about bringing education providers together to present a "cohesive" story about what the region had to offer both in study options and lifestyle options, Joyce said.
"They'll just do better hunting as a group."
The nine Taranaki secondary and tertiary education providers involved in the project are the Francis Douglas Memorial College, Inglewood high School, New Plymouth Boys' High School, New Plymouth Girls' High School, Spotswood college, Sacred Heart Girls' College, St Mary's Doicesian in Stratford, Witt, and the Pacific Hotel Management School in Bell Block.
