You need some serious readup on history related to Ukraine.. there isnt a Ukraine to begin with its madeup country from parts of russia poland romania hungary. Ukrainians were shelling their own people from 2014, basically ethnic russians. Since these folks were russians Russia was keep warning to Ukraine to stop that. (Very much similar to our northern issue Indians were meddling). West were supporting them because they wanted to put up Missile defence in Ukraine which didnt tolerate russians. At one point, they had sign the Minsk agreement with Europeans, during this Angela Merkel was German Chancelor (She admitted they signed it to gain time to arm Ukraine).This agreement was not honoured by Europeans hence the start of the war.. there are so many sources if your interested to read up on this issue..

This is only partly correct and is the Russian argument or rather the official smokescreen type rhetoric. This land existed since the 9th Century and is considered as joint ancestral homeland that laid the foundations for both modern Russia and Ukraine.
