Alternate syllabus introduced for students unable to pass O/Levels

The Education Ministry will be introducing a new program for the candidates who fail their Ordinary Levels to sit for Advanced Levels under an alternative syllabus. The new syllabus will commence on October 2017, under the thirteen-year continuous education program, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
Accordingly, an alternative syllabus comprising of two subject streams namely; common subject stream and applied subject stream will be introduced for the O/L drop-outs to sit for their A/L s.
It is compulsory for the candidates who enter the A/Level vocational subject stream to study 9 subjects under the common subject stream for a period of six months. The candidates will then get the chance to select one subject out of the 26 subjects offered under the applied subject stream for the remaining period of 18 months.
26 subjects have been introduced under applied subject stream including child psychology and security, health and social security, physical education and sports science, fashion design, graphic design, landscape design, aquatic technology education, construction technology studies targeting the development of professional skills training.
