Hundred and twenty line houses and seven government quarters in the Haldummulla area in Badulla were destroyed due to a landslide this morning.
Two bodies have been recovered by rescue teams so far and it is believed that about 250 people are trapped inside.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said an area of about two kilometres had been affected in the landslide.
DMC Assistant Director Udayakumara said that the rescue operations are underway with the help of the army and the police. Meanwhile, Military Spokesman Ruwan Wanigasuriya said 500 soldiers have been deployed in the rescue mission.
