Joint Opposition MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage arrested for misusing state funds

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of Sri Lanka police today arrested former Sports Minister and Joint Opposition MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
He was taken into custody when he arrived at the FCID office to give a statement over the misuse of state funds amounting to Rs 39 million.
Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara said that MP Aluthgamage was arrested for allegedly incurring losses amounting to 39 million rupees for the purchase of carom and checkers boards when he was the Minister of Sports in 2014.
He was accused of spending state funds to buy 14,000 carom and checkers boards, which were distributed to UPFA party offices during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidential election campaign in 2014.
The FCID also arrested the former chairman of state-owned retail network, Lanka Sathosa Nalin Fernando earlier this month in connection with the same transaction. Fernando was remanded and later released on bail.
Aluthgamage was released on a cash bail of Rs. 35,000 and two personal sureties of Rs. 500,000 when he was produced before the Fort Magistrate.

Mahindananda grilled by FCID

Former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was quizzed by the Police Financial Crime Investigation Division today over the non-payment of Rs. 39 mn to Lanka Sathosa for purchasing a large consignment of gaming boards during the previous regime.
MP Aluthgamage, who reported to the FCID office in Kollupitiya at 9.00 a.m. was questioned until 12.30 p.m. and a statement was recorded, Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
The former Minister was summoned to obtain his version of the mega deal involving millions of rupees just weeks after the former Secretary to the Ministry of Sports Ret. Maj. Gen. Nanda Mallawarachchi was also quizzed by the FCID.
The FCID says that the Ministry of Sports had ordered Carom and Draughts Boards 14, 000 each in December 2014 through Lanka Sathosa promising to make the payment once the purchase was made.
The goods had been delivered to the Sport Ministry by the Lanka Sathosa, but the payment had not been made to date, according to the FCID.
The Chief Accountant at the Ministry of Sports had refused make the payment for the gaming boards, saying he was not made aware of such a deal by the Ministry officials and no funds had been allocated for such purpose.
The Daily Mirror learns that the 28, 000 boards came in 17 container loads, had been distributed among the SLFP electoral organizers in the countrywide. It is also learnt that part of the consignment was distributed amongst 600 employees of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) attached to SLFP backed trade union ‘Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya’.
The purpose of the purchase of such a large number of gaming boards, had been stated in the Sports Ministry documents, as ‘to distribute amongst Sports Clubs in countrywide bid to enhance and develop the Carom and Draughts games.”

Former Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin Ruwanjeewa Fernando, who is alleged to have misappropriating state funds amounting to Rs.39 million while importing sports equipment during last Presidential Election was ordered to be further remanded until April 12 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate, today.
Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne observed that an appropriate order regarding the suspect's bail application to be announced at the next hearing date.
The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) commenced an investigation against former Sathosa chairman and for Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage in connection with importation of 14,000 carrom boards and 11,000 draught boards during the previous regime.
Last Friday, the Court of Appeal dismissed a writ petition filed by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage who sought an order preventing FCID from arresting him for allegedly committing offences under Penal Code and Public Property Act while importing sports equipment.
