Port and Shipping Minister rejects claims that Prime Minister ordered to dismiss Hambantota Port workers

Dec 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga has denied claims made by parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered to dismiss a group of employees of the Hambantota Harbor.
"Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has made a statement to the media by quoting my name that the Prime Minister has instructed to dismiss employees serving at the Hambantota Port. I totally refuse this statement. Prime minister didn't make such advice," Minister Rantunga said.
Addressing a media conference, the Minister said this administration didn't dismiss the 582 workers who took part in the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa's election campaign nor the 200 employees who were recruited by Namal Rajapaksa for Rs 10000 monthly salary.
Minister Ranatunga stressed that the President or the Prime Minister never advised his ministry to take a decision to dismiss the Hambanthota Port employees.
The Minister also called for a formal investigation into the amount of debt taken to construct the Hambanthota Harbor since there seems to be discrepancy in the figures claimed by MP Namal Rajapaksa and official records.
According to the government records a total debt of USD 1.347 billion was taken on Hambanthota while MP Rajapaksa claims a debt of USD 400 million.
The Minister said MP Namal Rajapaksa is unaware of a debt of around USD 1 billion and urged the President and the Prime Minister to launch a formal investigation and look into where the money was utilized during the previous United People's Freedom Alliance government.
"Where is this money? Perhaps may be in China. We saw, the former president visiting the Chinese Company which signed the agreement for this project," he said.
Speaking further, Minister Ranatunga assured that during the procedure of assigning Hambantota Port to the Chinese company the government will take actions to secure jobs of the workers.
"When we were preparing the agreement with the Chinese company our first concern was to secure jobs of the employees," Minister Ranatunga said pointing out that the previous government of Mahinda Rajapaksa did not recruit the Hambantota Port employees to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).
He noted that the Hambantota Port employees were recruited in to a company named Magampura formed by the former government and the employees were engaged in political activities of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Namal Rajapaksa for three years without giving them permanent employment at SLPA.
"I made those workers permanent in their jobs. Now we are working to recruit these employees to the new company which is being formed. But an organized group of people are attempting to make these employees helpless. If these workers continue this protest that is being monitored by this organized group, I can't assure the permanency in their jobs," the Port and Shipping Minister said.

චීනය වරාය ගන්න හේතුව ලංකාවෙ එවුන්ට වරාය කරගන්න බැරි එක. වරායෙ පාඩුවක් නෑ. නැව් එන්නෙ නැත්තෙත් නෑ. මට ඕනනම් පහුගිය අවුරුදු තුනේම හම්බන්තොට කෝල් කරන ප්රධාන ලයින්ස් වල ස්ටැට්ස් දාන්න පුළුවන්. එත් ආයතන වල පුද්ගලික තොරතුරු මේවගේ සයිට් වල දාන එක හරි නැති නිසා දාන්න බෑ. හම්බන්තොට වරාය පාවිච්චි වෙන්නෙ ආනයන අපනයන වලට නෙමෙයි Transshipment වලට. ලංකාව ඇතුලෙ පරිභෝජනය වන භාණ්ඩ ගොඩක් ඒවා ගෙන්නන්නෙ කොලබට. දැනට හම්බන්තොට වරාය ප්රධාන වශයෙන්ම දුවන්නෙ වාහන ගෙනියන නැව් (Car carriers) වලින්. මේ වාහන වලින් 99% ක්ම වෙන රටවලට යවන ඒව. ඒවා ලංකාවෙ පාවිච්චි වෙන ඒව නෙමෙයි ලංකාව පාවිච්චි වෙන්නෙ Transshipment Point එකක් විදියට. හේතුව කොලබ වගේ නෙමෙයි හම්බන්තොට ඕන තරම් යාර්ඩ් වලට ඉඩ තියෙන හිස් ඉඩම් තියෙනව. වරායට ආදායම හම්බවෙන්නෙ මේ නැව් වලින් ගන්න handling charges, yard demurrages (වාහන ගාල් යාර්ඩ් වල ගාල් කරල තියෙනවට වරායෙන් අය කරගන්න ගාස්තුව.) වගේ දේවල් වලින්. දැනට හම්බන්තොටට එන එක ලයින් එකක් උන්ගෙ demurrage free time එක දවස් හතකින් වැඩි කරනව නම් එන වොලියුම් එක තව වැඩිකරන්නම් කිව්ව එත් මෙහෙ ඉන්න එවුන් බිස්නස්ඒ එක වැඩිකරගන්න තියෙන චාන්ස්ක එකට කැමති උනේ නෑ. ඔයවගේ ගොඩක් හේතු නිසා තමයි හම්බන්තොට හිතපු තරම් ආදායමක් ආවේ නැත්තෙ. චීන්නුන්ට දීපු ගමන් උන් ඔය අඩුපාඩු ඔක්කොම හදල ගනියි. අයෙත් bunker supply (නැව් වලට තෙල් දෙන එක) පටන් ගනියි. කොලබට එන නැව් කීයටවත් හම්බන්තොට එන එකක් නෑ. එකෙක් කියල තියෙනව වගේ පොර්ට් චාජර්ස් වලින් 5% නෙමෙයි 10 % අඩු කරත්. ඒවට වෙනම හේතු තියෙනව. එත් උන් වරාය නග්ගල ගන්න බවනම් 100% ෂුවර් කරල කියන්න පුළුවන්.
මේ වෙනකොට හම්බන්තොට වරායෙ සේවක උද්ගෝෂණයක් තියෙනව. චීනෙට දෙන්න කලින් දැන් ඉන්න සේවකයො වරාය අධිකාරියට බඳව ගන්න කියල. NYK නැවක් වරායෙ දැන් berth වෙලා sail කරන්න බැරුව ඉන්නව දවස් 3 තිස්සෙ.
