Ambassador:
An ambassador is an official head of the diplomat who represents his country or state in another sovereign country or state or international organization. This term is used in the countries that are member of United Nations that means that ambassador works as an official communication channel between two United Nations countries. In addition to representation of home country in host country, he also deals with the matter regarding visitors and travelers of home country in host country and also ensured their protection in the host country.
High Commissioner:
High Commissioner is the official head of diplomat of one Commonwealth country to another Commonwealth country. The official office of high commissioner in foreign country is known as “embassy”. This term was emerged from the British Empire when member countries or states of the British Empire appointed their official representative in other British Empire states or countries.
Difference:
Following are the basic differences between ambassador and high commissioner.
- An ambassador is the head of diplomatic mission United Nations or non-Commonwealth country in another United Nations countries while high commissioner is the head of diplomatic mission of a Commonwealth country in another Commonwealth country.
- The building or office of the high commissioner in a foreign country is known as “high commission” while office or building of ambassador in foreign country is known as an “embassy”.
- An ambassador plays important role in foreign relations as compare to high commissioners.
