The Republic of Kalmykia (Russian: Респу́блика Калмы́кия, tr. Respublika Kalmykiya; IPA: [rʲɪsˈpublʲɪkə kɐlˈmɨkʲɪjə]; Kalmyk: Хальмг Таңһч, Hal'mg Tanghch) is a federal subject of Russia (a republic). As of the 2010 Census, its population was 289,481.[9]

It is the only region in Europe where Buddhism is practiced by the majority of the population.[citation needed] It has become well known as an international center for chess[citation needed] because its former President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is the head of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Kalmykia’s natural resources include coal, oil, and natural gas.

The republic’s wildlife includes the famous saiga antelope, whose habitat is protected in Cherny Zemli Nature Reserve.
