The government has made a new rule to discourage people from making cash transactions over Rs. 500,000 in a day or for a single event. If you don't follow the new rule by paying through a bank account or credit/debit card, you won't be able to deduct that payment from your taxable income or consider it as part of the cost of an asset. The new rule does not apply to payments made by the Sri Lankan government, banks, financial institutions, or other persons/purchases specified by the Minister. "Single transaction" means buying goods or services on a single bill, receipt, or statement.

If you make a payment of Rs. 500,000 or more in cash, and you do not comply with the criteria laid down by the new rule, you will not be able to deduct that payment from your taxable income. This means that you will have to pay tax on that amount as if it was still part of your income. Additionally, such a payment will not be considered as part of the cost of an asset. This means that you will not be able to include that payment when calculating the cost of the asset for tax purposes, which could result in a higher taxable capital gain when you sell the asset.
