කොහොමද critical වෙන්නෙ කියපන්කො? අපිටත් ආසයි දැන ගන්න.. සිරාවටම අහන්නෙ..

in short
1. all airliners flying to sri lanka are required by law to carry additional quantity of fuel to fly to an alternate destination in the event of a problem at BIA. so any flight coming to SL carries fuel required for the journey + holding fuel for BIA + additional fuel to fly to Chennai + Holding fuel for Chennai.
Now with Mattala they file Mattala as the alternate lading strip. Mattala is only 25 minutes from KAT so the amount of additional fuel they have to carry is substantially less. (Fuel is heavy. now they fly several tonnes less. it's a substantial saving)
2.when things do go wrong at KAT (yes things do go wrong. some aircraft get stuck on runway due to technical faults, and when there's bad weather) incoming aircraft diverts to Mattala. this is substantially less expensive for sri lankan airlines.
3. BIA has reached it's maximum passenger and flight handling capacity.
4. With the amount of traffic we have at BIA it is not practical to accommodate training flights at BIA anymore. Mattala is the ideal location for VOR and ILS instrument training flights.
5. BIA landing strip does not fully qualify as an A380 landing strip. (with is not enough)
6. BIA runway needs overlaying. overlaying was supposed to begin in this June. Thanks to new regime they halted all construction work. during overlaying BIA runway needs to be closed for about 6 - 8 hours a day. Sri Lanka needs an alternate airport to have air transport functioning during that period.
7. Since Mattala is fully qualifies as an A380 airport all a380 which used fly from Australia to Middle east and europe can now fly over the oceanic air space belonging to sri lanka. earlier they flew from australia - indonesia and from there over land, in a much longer route. now with this they have a short cut over the ocean. and we make a lot of money. (airliners flying over the ocean by law are required to fly on tracks close enough to airports to "glide" and land in case of engine failure. Earlier A380s had no such airport in this region)

Most important thing is BIA overlaying project. our runway is damaged. can't be patched up any more. it's in need of overlaying and you can't do it without an alternate airport in the country. This was identified log before.
