British airways flight catches on fire in las vegas
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - Fire officials said 14 people were sent to Sunrise Hospital following a fire on a London-bound flight Tuesday, though, most of the injuries were related to the evacuation of the plane.
McCarran Airport said the incident involved British Airways Flight 2276, which was destined for London's Gatwick Airport. The listed departure time was 4:05 p.m., according to McCarran's website.
There were 159 passengers and 13 crew members on board the flight at the time, McCarran said.
According to Clark County Fire Department, its fire alarm office received a call of flames visible on an aircraft on the runway at 4:13 p.m. Units from CCFD's Fire Station 13, which is located on the airfield, was first to arrive two minutes later.
All people on board were off the plane at 4:18 p.m., CCFD noted. Firefighters doused the flames shortly after arrival.
CCFD said the majority of the injuries involving the 14 people from the flight occurred as passengers were sliding down inflatable chutes off the aircraft. The fire department characterized the injuries as minor "secondary to the fire".
The airport said one runway was taken out of service following the incident. Flight operations continued as normal on the airport's other three runways, according to McCarran.
An FAA spokesperson told BuzzFeed News the plane's left engine caught fire on the tarmac, prompting the crew to abort takeoff.
The aircraft involved is a Boeing 777-200, which seats 275. The plane's manufacturer tweeted it was gathering information on what happened.
