Hybrids leave a smaller carbon footprint because they burn less fuel :lol:

Yes, true. But it's a side effect of the evolution of technology, to prevent the environmental pollution. Japan has the income per capita of 10 times of our figure, and the oil price is fraction higher than our's.
Why do you think governments are very keen to regulate the carbon emission of vehicles? It's now a global problem to keep carbon emission at a safe level.Electric vehicles are going to be the future of automobile industry, internal combustion engines are now very easier to replace by the rare earth magnet motors nowadays, only with fraction of weight of the engine.
Only problem with EV are the battery's energy density. but in near future after the commercial success of lithium-air batteries, which will have the same energy density as the fuel gasoline, will be the end of the internal combustion engine automobile industry. Hybrids are the only way to survive for larger automakers.

Remind me again, how does all this make a CVT transmission made in 2007 reliable than a conventional auto transmission made post 2010?

    P.S. I thought as much

It's not only the CVT transmission that I've cared about. It's Toyota Belta I've recommended. First thing first, My brand of choice is Toyota. After that I've recommended Toyota belta against the yaris, solely due to the CVT transmission equipped on belta. So, I am comparing here with 4 speed conventional auto vs CVT produced at same company at dame time.

So how does this post 2010 conventional auto came to the talk? If we are comparing 2 car brands, then there will be a so many different fact to be considered.:dull:

Okay, I can roll with that :) So, how does all this make a CVT transmission reliable than a conventional auto transmission?

CVTs are not so reliable and there's no doubt about it but someone who got used to the smoothness in a weird way and fuel economy doesn't want to buy a normal auto again. Even I'm looking for my next upgrade and definitely CVT is a GO for me though the car could be 10 years old. :sorry: To be honest I'm enjoying low RPMs in high speed and sometimes high RPM in low speeds :baffled::baffled:. You can never predict engine sound with CVT.

Ah, I saw your post searching for something with bit more ground clearance.

If you're looking for smoothness and FE why don't you consider an EV like the new Note?

hmm, I mean Toyota CVT. Toyota is a branch which was proven to be reliable to the whole world. So I doubt it that the CVT failures are solely due to the engineering faults. I agree with you checking the car maintainance records are the best way to avoid abused vehicles. no argue for that.

I don't have experience with newly developed automatic transmission systems which might have efficiency of the CVTs. But if we compare the NEW CVT to decades old conventional auto, I mean auto 110, 121 to aqua 2016:baffled:. what would make you think that 110,121 is reliable?

They're engineered for Japanese driving conditions, that's why they're called JDM. Most of the CVTs that are being repaired/replaced are of JDM Toyotas.
