Ah, I saw your post searching for something with bit more ground clearance.

If you're looking for smoothness and FE why don't you consider an EV like the new Note?

They are out of my budget and I'm not so fancy about EV nor hybrids but might buy a hybrid after couple of years who knows. I don't want complete silence also.

Checked an IST (CVT) last week but boot space is smaller than my Vitz. Then thought about going for a sedan like Axio 141(which is again CVT) but prices are insane and X grade doesn't worth at all.

I don't have experience with newly developed automatic transmission systems which might have efficiency of the CVTs. But if we compare the NEW CVT to decades old conventional auto, I mean auto 110, 121 to aqua 2016:baffled:. what would make you think that 110,121 is reliable?

You're seriously comparing two vehicles with a 16-year age difference and about 2-3 million price difference to make the Belta look better than the Yaris huh?

You must be smoking some good stuff tonight

hmm, I mean Toyota CVT. Toyota is a branch which was proven to be reliable to the whole world. So I doubt it that the CVT failures are solely due to the engineering faults. I agree with you checking the car maintainance records are the best way to avoid abused vehicles. no argue for that.

    But why?

Well after getting used to complete silence you won't be able to make your mind to drive a noisy ICE only CVT again :D

I don't get why people like to be so "disconnected" with the car, I mean I understand why people prefer auto transmissions more than manuals with the traffic conditions today but with CVTs, EPS and EVs don't you feel like you're being anesthetized?

They're engineered for Japanese driving conditions, that's why they're called JDM. Most of the CVTs that are being repaired/replaced are of JDM Toyotas.

:P True but still our people are going after the JDM, isn't?:P it's true JDMs are the first vehicles to incorporate the new innovative technology before international version. however JDMs are still 10 times better than the Indian vehicles which may have very similar driving condition compared to our country.

So, what's your suggestion? to go for a international version rather than the JDM vesion?

The best one is Corolla 141 lx model.. This is not a fuel economy car but one month ago I got one and it is doing 12-14 km/l out of the city. Don't know about city limit bcoz I'm not a town man. It suit best for me... very comfortable and cracking look. But you have to think what you need. Just an idea. I think raththaran Also would recommend this car

    2008_altis_ext3.preview.jpg

Useless basic car made for permits. Cheap looking interior and plasticy dash board. This was the utter failure of corolla lineup, thats why the 121 is still in demand.

Yes of course - that is why I'd rather recommend the Yaris (international version) than the Belta (JDM)

That's what they say, Toyota Lanka.:baffled: But we have established lineup of JDM vehicles here, example is premio, allion series. If you buy a international version, you might end up with low grade one and less resale value.

We can advice to others to not to buy JDMs, But we would definitely go for a JDM for ourselves.

Well preference to CVT is a personal thing like seeing beauty of a car.
It happens with your age machan. My first car was a Lancer 1994 manual in my 20s.That time I was a strong supporter of manual transmissions and a Toyota hater too bashing lack of driving feel.

But now I'm in my 30s with a family and kids so looking for a safe and easy option and driving pleasure is less of becoming a priority (If you have money to spend different story then). Don't forget Japan has a large older population so they build cars mainly thinking of them.

Hmm true enough. At old days, I love to change gear and to drive. But now I am searching for a easy way of driving. If I can enable autopilot and to drive, I would do that now. Pleasure of driving is not much of a concern of me now, But safer driving is the major concern.

Take your own examples - 2008 axios had this melting dashboard issue. CVT issues are still present even in 2014 allions and premios. Clutchless AC compressors of axio, premio and allion are going kaput to this date!

But still people don't perceive those as unreliable vehicles? are they? you can sell a allion, premio, axio within hours!. People's perception don't come up without a underlying base. :dull:

They're not unreliable vehicles. They're just not as reliable as the international variants under SL driving conditions  but in SL going for a slightly used JDM is cheaper and you get more bells and whistles than the brand new international variant offered by the local agent - that's why people still keep buying JDMs.

Now as for the OP's choice I've clearly mentioned all this from the beginning - conventional autos/manuals (Yaris) are the way to go if you intend to use the car more than 5 years without having to worry about the transmission. Finding a well maintained Yaris is relatively easy as they were imported BN and was taken care of by the agent at least during the warranty period.

Go for CVT(Belta) if the seller has complete maintenance records or you're gonna sell the car anyway in about 3-5 years time or when you feel the transmission is not performing as well as it did before.

    It's as simple as that.

    lol. this is hilarious
If you want to talk about the reliability I have a British made car which is 60+ years old and still rolling perfectly with it's original motor under the hood. of course it's a manual.

reliability wise up to now it's manual> C auto> cvt

fe, smoothness and other shits like that wise it's cvt>>>>>manual > c auto or cvt>>>>> c auto> manual (depends)

In Sri lanka you can sell A TOYOTA even without an engine within hours. that's a fact. (real world)

so if you're money minded do not hesitate to buy a TOYOTA.
other brands cannot even compete when it comes to the market price.

doesn't matter which Jap you buy (in SL) coz in each category there's no hell lot of a difference.

and if you really want the driving pleasure please drive a Beemer or Merc. Trust me you won't regret. :P

This has something to do with the older peoples' reluctancy of accepting the new technology.:baffled:

May be you are in the opinion of older are better than new. That's why the attitude of manual>auto>CVT. may be in the future it might change the perception. I am thinking manual has it's own upside, it may suits for spme type of people. CVT has it's own upside, it also suits for some people. It' ultimately come to the preference of the buyer. Choice of transmission type seems cannot be generalized.:)

He is telling that the brandnew imported vehicles are better than the reconditioned one. Essentially telling is to avoid JDMs. That's where i am going to oppose him.

You know automotive threads on Elakiri, you know the car enthusiasts here, ask anyone - open a thread if you want - and ask which transmission is the most reliable one to this date, conventional auto or CVT.

Most of the car enthusiasts here are under the age of 35 so that "older peoples' reluctance" theory isn't applicable:rolleyes:

I'm trying to make you understand why the Yaris is reliable than the Belta!

You love to discuss the Makka while the discussion is on the Balla don't you? Hybrids, EVs, Carbon emissions and now JDMs :dull:
