Melbourne-based NRI Harshwinder Singh said, “Many overseas students in Australia are really confused. A number of them are looking for other options such as the employer sponsorship visa. This visa enables regional employees to address labour shortages within their region by sponsoring skilled overseas workers when one cannot get an appropriately skilled Australian worker. If supported by employers, overseas candidates can get work rights for two to three years. However, in that case, they can only work for that particular employer.”

“However, students enrolled in bachelor’s program in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) courses ranging between three to four years have been left in the lurch. Earlier, the proposal was a five-year work visa for STEM graduates but now they will get only two to three years. If one gets first-class honours, he/she will get a work permit for three years. Otherwise, they will get two years,” Chaudhary informed.

“With the age limit of applying for TGVs reduced to 35 years, it is a clear-cut indication from the Australian government that they want young and genuine students to study in their country,” he added.
