A young female soldier known by the pseudonym ‘Rehana’ became internationally famous after a a photo of her in full military gear along with her AK-47 was widely circulated on social media. The woman was celebrated as a symbol of hope for the embattled Syrian border town of Kobani after a journalist tweeted a picture of her making a “victory sign”, claiming that she’d personally killed 100 ISIS militants.
Rehana was in turn seen as a horrifying threat to Islamic State as her presence could likely do more to demoralize ISIS troops than a platoon of her male counterparts. An outcry quickly ensued by radical muslim extremists, as jihadists fear a woman on the battlefield. They believe if they die in jihad, they will be rewarded with 72 virgins in heaven. If they are killed by a woman, however, they are denied their virgins…
In response, the fundamental jihadist propaganda circulated a photo on social media purportedly showing a smiling Islamic State member holding the head of a slain female alongside an ISIS flag. The claim was that Rehana had been beheaded
The most transparent problem with that assertion is that it was not Rehana.
“Rehana is very much alive”, said Kurdish journalist Pawan Durani who interviewed the fighter and follows the resistance. He wrote online: “Rehana is very much alive. ISIS supporters just trying to lift morale.” and “Propaganda and falsehood runs in their blood. Rehana keeps hunting them.”
The journalist who interviewed her also noted that Rehana’s hair is not nearly as long as the woman in the Islamic State photo and her facial features are distinctly different.
Supporters also have posted a CNN video shot in Rojava-Kurdistan (Western Kurdistan) titled ‘Is an enemy of ISIS a friend of America?’ as proof that Rehana is alive. In an online discussion forum, the supporters say that the video, aired on 26 October, proves that the young Kurdish fighter is alive. The girl, who appears at 00:07- 00:08 minute in the video holding a flag and a gun with light brown gunstock, (third from left) is Rehana.
