Questions booking.com or Direct - Credit card Number

Direct booking with hotel asks for payment when booking.
Same booking with "booking.com" asks only credit card number.

1. if cancel, still hotel charge the amount or penalty?
2. does this mean by using booking.com we do not pay until we really stay and money safe?

if it says free cancellation then no charge
If not they charge the full amount or partial for cancellation.mostly full charge after the mentioned cancellation period

Most likely you will loose money unless its a good hotel with a cancellation duration.safe with booking.com as long as it says free cancellation or a cancelllation period is mentioned
