VR is the name of IS technology for Nikor lenses. Sigma call that OS. no idea about tamaron.
There are lots of lenses without IS which are being used by professional level photographers. me being not one of them find it is very hard to capture clear shots when the env is dark without the help if IS.
I have a sigma lens without IS. I know the pain buddy. trust me.
