i am also in middle with a problem regarding the career.
if u guys can please help me,
i am cirrently doing BIT and i think may be in two months time, i will be able to go to uni.and my parents and also i think to do CIMA . i am hoping to start it after this july, after the BIT 2nd sem exam, because of the university and the CIMA thing i think i wont be able to continue BIT. but i hope to continue BIT after completion of CIMA.
(i will be selected to do physical science in uni)
so the problem is what is the best combination to do firstly..i must go to the uni nee...then
    is it physical deg+BIT
    or
    physical deg+CIMA
i like BIT and CIMA both.

well the UCSC has a long history with BIT and Moratuwa recently started to offer it. But I think both the unis are doing a pretty good job. Surely you can get a job at the completion of it.
Its like this machan. BCS is more focused on bringing a system analysis into life while BIT is more towards technical side. In software engineering, most of the time you need to analyze and build a a system. So both these things are important.

Since BCS is a UK qualification it will have a higher recognition in UK and Aussie compared to BIT. But in my opinion, if you are becoming a complete IT professional its best if you can have your hands on both functional and technical side.

thanks machan thanks a lot!!:) :)

see the answer given to my problem. its similar to your problem. To become a software engineer or what ever in ICT field its enough have O\Ls. But If some one have good results in A\L he\she has the great opportunity to find a good job easily.
Earlier for the BIT(Colombo) required at least 3S for any subjects in A\Ls. But now after doing O\Ls you can do the FIT and can be apply to the BIT. else you can have a BSc(hons) degree from NIBM. there also they will not concern about A\L too much because they have foundation courses and diplomas.else you can select BCS (British Computer Society course) or ACS(Australian Computer Society) but its better you have A\Ls.The most important thing is doing your A\Ls well and think the path way you want to go.:)

Name of the Uni have an effect machang :) You can't simply say it is not... Many employers concider the degree depending on the name of the university.. This is because many Unis are specialised in different sectors.

Like Moratuwa in Engineering, Ruhuna (Galle) in Medicine and Peradeniya in Physical Science etc.

So the name of the Uni does matter machang... But not to a greater depth though :)

When you talk about the Job Market, you can't say which is the most needed segment. All the sections are important. But a combination of qualifications will definitely give you a good stable position.

As an example if you have an IT degree with an MBA (in Management) with some part qualifications in Marketing (CIM or something) then you are definitely prominent among others.

Likewise, what matters most is the vast area of qualifications. You qualifications should cover as much as possible of the whole domain of job market. Then you don't need to fear about a job... :)

In Australia the most needed skill these days is Building construction (Mason bass) Then Accountants, IT professionals (Mainly project managers and Quality controlers)

The best option is to get 3As and then do the Colombo or Moratuwa Uni Degree (Internal)

I don't think you need to get 3As for that. But still you have to get really good results and a good Z Score to enter those 2 unis.

If not, you might need to spend a lot to obtain qualifications to become a SW Engineer.

Even if you spend money and become a SW engineer with qualifications like BIT or something like that, then your chance of getting a good job in Sri Lanka is not sure. Because there are many Uni graduates who the employers think much more better than BIT degree holders.

But again it comes back to your ability, creativity and ENGLISH!

If you have a normal degree in IT and then some additional qualifications coupled with good English skills, then you can compete well with the others :)

Better concentrate more on A/Ls and get good results :)

I think in Sri Lanka this is a good salary machang for a SW Engineer.

But I'm pretty sure they must be asking a full set of qualifications and experience.

And I'm again pretty sure that this is a foreign company

Because $1,600 is the very basic salary in here (Australia.) Even a full time typist or a cleaner can earn more than that for a month :)

So that's why people outsource to Sri Lanka :D

Anyway get qualified and stay in touch ;) I'm planning to have my own company in Sri lanka in another 5 - 6 years of time... (Ofcause with salaries much better than that ;))

    Ok brother!
In UK where? and which univercity?
What is the digree? ( I mean managemnt digrees are focused on several areas
like marketing , valueation (idnt kno wht it is) , finance etc.
any way thanks for the info!

Don't ask from others bung :o

First choose the field you like! And the field you have an interest in!

Management is Management... But in any Management degree you have Marketing, HR, Finance, some IT subjects. Coz they should be managed in order to manage a company.

So first choose whether you need to do Management as the major, or Finance as the major?

Then let's figure out the Uni :)

Best thing is to pass A/Ls properly and enter a Sri lankan uni to do Management. Or else you can do Management Degree in J'pura externally as well. (That is if you have passed A/Ls.)

i think its best if you can do a physical degree plus CIMA. but that is only if you like it. BIT+CIMA will also earn u lot of credibility machan. However dropping CIMA is not that recommended. Coz as a person in the job market i know CIMA is the only course from here that can stand on its own. Meaning if you only have CIMA, u will be able to get a job. Not sure about other courses, if you only have tham.
