I did some study on Forex for some time and did not do any live trades since I did not want to lose my hard earned money with Forex. But still I wish if I could trade.
Based on knowledge I got couple of years back below are few points you want to keep in mind when trading Forex.
1. You must first practice with a demo account treating that is real money and make sure you have a good winning percentage enough to make a profit over a time. Adjust your take profit levels and stop loss levels over time using the demo account and continuously monitor the performance of your strategy. Do not try new methods on live account. That has to be tested in a demo account for some time before putting in to live trades.
2. Trade with the same strategy you practiced in the demo account. You must not do any changes to that in a live account.
3. Do not be emotional, be disciplined. Usually, when you see your trade is in a loss, you become emotional and may want to close the trade. But if you have placed the order based on a strategy you should wait until it reaches your take profit level or stop loss level. With a good strategy order reaching stop loss level is not an issue.
4. Always have stop loss and take profit levels for your trades. Without stop loss you can wipe out your account in few minutes. If you have a good strategy, you should have a stop loss and take profit levels already for your trades. Never risk more than 2% of your capital for losses.
5. There are no trading strategies that gives you 100% winnings. So you have to expect losing trades as well. May be 40% or even 60% trades may lose. That is why you need take profit and stop loss levels for each trade. So, do your math, calculate what kind of stop loss levels and what kind of take profit levels if you have 60% winning strategy.
6. When you are choosing a Forex broker use a one with good reputation and low spread. Also they must guarantee that your order will be filled when take profit or stop loss levels are met. Otherwise you will soon be wiping out your account. Most of brokers do not guarantee this.
7. Do not use brokers like etoro, their spread is higher and for the amounts that most of us invest, we hardly can make profits instead we make brokers rich.
8. Even though most of the brokers accept $300 as the initial investment that may not be a safe amount to protect from a margin call. Calculate how many trades you can do based on your strategy. You can simply do this calculation, if you have a strategy with set take profit and stop levels together with winning percentage. Remember to calculate how many losses you can afford in a row.
9. Read a lot before doing any trades. The books like http://www.amazon.com/The-Discipline.../dp/0132157578 will shape your trading career.
10. Do not trade on a live account based on a demo account result which you haven’t treated as a real account.
11. Do not trade just because friends are making money. You must learn to trade yourself.
