    Netherlands vs Brazil

    netherlandsp.jpg
    vs
    brazill.jpg

The first of our four FIFA World Cup quarterfinal encounters comes from the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth in the afternoon kick-off on the 2nd of July when 5 time World Champions Brazil take on the Netherlands for a spot in the final four. It's a clash between two nations that propagate 'beautiful football' across the world and who have produced some of the game's immortals. The Oranje look stronger and cohesive than ever before and seem to possess a genuine chance to go all the way for the first time in their footballing history having come short ever so slightly in 1974 and 1978, losing at the final hurdle during the Johan Cruyff era. The Samba Kings are always expected to be World Champions and it is no different this year. With a new look team, a new coach and a couple of major tournament victories in their stride, one will be quite surprised if they fail to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy on July 11th.

    Netherlands

    arjen_robben2.jpg

The Dutch ground out another result at these World Cup finals in their round of 16 encounter against Slovakia. Having topped Group E which consisted of Cameroon, Japan and Demark with a perfect record, Oranje were overwhelming favourites against the Slovakians in their first knockout stage encounter. Arjen Robben's return from injury was a huge boost to their fortunes and the Bayern Munich winger justified his selection with a clinical near post finish in the 18th minute of the game to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead. The favourites were riding high on their lead with their less fancied opponents doing little to reduce their comfort. The Dutch put the game to bed when Wesley Sneijder slotted home in the 84th minute. The newbies did manage to pull one back in injury time via a Robert Vittek penalty but it was all too little too late.

Bert van Marwijk's team has displayed its flair and brilliance in short spells throughout the tournament but they have really failed to take any game from the scruff of its neck and kill off their opponents. The Dutch haven't really been playing the expansive football we have grown to see them play and a lot of reasons including end of season player fatigue could be attributed to it. Dirk Kuyt's presence on the flanks has reduced the effectiveness of quick counter-attacking and direct wing-play which has to a certain extent hampered the team from giving its very best. Robin van Persie plays up front on his own in Van Marwijk's system but the striker has only scored 1 goal in 4 games and one wonders whether bringing a more out and out striker like Klaas Jan Huntelaar could help get those goals more consistently. The fact is though, if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

The Dutch defence seems to have had it all merry in the tournament till now, having conceded no goals from open play. The million dollar question is whether the back four will be able to handle the pressure brought on by the flamboyant Samba boys. Captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst is in his mid-thirties and one finds it difficult to imagine the veteran winning his battle against the swift and cunning Kaka or even the the skillful and mercurial Robinho. Netherlands though do possess Mark van Bommel and Nigel De Jong amidst their ranks who can protect the back four when called upon. On the offensive front, the deadly duo of Wesley Snejder and Arjen Robben could terrify even the most valiant defender. The Dutch possess a very balanced squad that can really give any opponent the chills on their day and it will interesting to see how they fare against the Brazilians.

    Brazil

    brazil_portugal2.jpg

The Selecao took on a good Chilean side in their round of 16 clash after successfully navigating through the Group of Death consisting of Portugal, North Korea and Ivory Coast. Brazil put three past their hapless opponents in a game that was dominated by the favourites in yellow. A rare goal from defender Juan in the first half was followed by Luis Fabiano's third of the tournament and Robinho then broke his duck in the tournament with a 2nd half goal that sealed an impressive 3-0 win from the 5 time FIFA World Champions.

Brazil are one of the most intimidating and fluent team going forward with the likes of Fabiano, Robinho, Kaka and Elano carrying the baton with great precision and confidence. The unit isn't definitely based on the flair and pace of its attackers but it also has its share of solid and trustworthy defenders who not surprisingly have a thing for going forward. Dunga's back four also hasn't been really tested in the tournament and the Dutch would provide the sort of challenge that could completely overwhelm the Brazilians. Maicon and Michel Bastos are two fullbacks who are more than happy to assist in attack and Netherlands will look to exploit the spaces created by them on the break.

Brazil are favourites to win this game and book a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament but the Oranje will also do their best to be an unbreakable barrier between the Brazilians and their dreams. The Dutch wouldn't necessarily take the game to Brazil on the night and as one observed against Portugal, Dunga's men aren't too comfortable to face sides who sit back and absorb play. While Elano has been definitely ruled out for the clash against the Netherlands due to an ankle injury, Brazil are optimistic that Felipe Melo might just recover in time. Ramires, who replaced Melo against Chile, received his second yellow of the tournament and is suspended for the game, leaving a definite hole in Dunga's plans.

    Key Battles

Arjen Robben vs. Michel Bastos - The talisman of the Dutch team, Arjen Robben will have to fend off a challenge from Lyon full back Michel Bastos in order to make a huge impact on the game. The Bayern Munich winger almost single handely took his club team to the UEFA Champions League final and Holland will hope he takes the national team to their 3rd FIFA World Cup final ever. Robben is quick, blessed with a thunderous left foot and with his exploits in different footballing cultures, he is quite well versed with different style of plays. Bastos hasn't really been tested in the tournament even though his team took on Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the group stages.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst vs. Kaka - The Dutch captain will have to call on all his experience in order to subdue the former FIFA World Player of the Year. Kaka is swift and has quick feet which he will certainly use to exploit the 35-year old Van Bronckhorst. Dunga would have recognised the former Barcelona defender as a week link in that back four and will surely ask Kaka to go at him all guns blazing.

    Probable Line-Ups

Netherlands (4-2-3-1): Stekelenberg, Van Der Wiel, Heitinga, Mathijsen, Van Bronckhorst, De Jong, Van Bommel, Kuyt, Robben, Sneijder, Van Persie

The Dutch would stick with Arjen Robben instead of Rafael van der Vaart with the Bayern Munich winger looking set to regain his best form soon enough. The same back four has played for Holland in 3 of their four matches and one doesn't expect it to change. Van Marwijk could bring in Khalid Boulahrouz in place of Van der Wiel at the right back slot if he isn't sure of the talented youngsters ability to handle Robinho but the Ajax full back does promise a far better attacking option against a team you definitely need to score goals against. Robben would start on the right with Dirk Kuyt on the left and the two could switch flanks as and when the situation demands. This Dutch team seems fit to make this game a real classic encounter and one hopes they all do show up both mentally and physically against Brazil.

Brazil (4-2-3-1): Cesar, Maicon, Juan, Lucio, Bastos, Gilberto, Kleberson, Alves, Kaka, Robinho, Fabiano

Dani Alves played an attacking role on the right replacing the injured Elano against Chile but was largely ineffective, Dunga may consider giving Nilmar a run out on the right flank, especially since that is not the side from which the Dutch are likely to attack. Alternatively, he could get Dani Alves and Robinho to switch flanks, giving Bastos more protection against Robben. Ramires' suspension sould see the experienced Kleberson give Gilberto company in midfield. Kaka and Robinho will have no clearly defined roles and will move in and out as they please with the freedom of the park given to them. Luis Fabiano will lead the line upfront and look to add to his goal tally of 3 in the tournament which will also see his reputation soar more than it already is.

Prediction - This game has historically produced a lot of goals and one wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again. Both teams are undefeated in the tournament and it certainly seems as if there will be little to choose between them at the final whistle. We think this game has the potential to head to extra time.

    Uruguay vs Ghana

    uruguayu.jpg

    ghanay.jpg

Take down the date 2nd July in your diaries folks, for Soccer City is going to witness a game that will change lives and alter history forever. Dark horses Uruguay take on the flag bearers of all African hopes Ghana in one of most exciting and unexpected quarter-final clashes one could have hoped for at this edition of the FIFA World Cup. An intriguing tussle between endless stamina and brute force against that of flawless talent and skill will be on show at the largest stadium in Africa and it'll be a fitting arena for the Ghanaians to become the first ever African nation to make it to the semi-finals at a World Cup. The South Americans too are entering a new dawn in their footballing history as they are making their first trip to the last 8 in 40 years and a win in the game will help them give a nation the footballing joy that it has craved for so many years.

    Uruguay

    luis_suarez.jpg

After topping Group A with 7 points of a possible 9, with wins over Mexico and hosts South Africa, the Charruas took on a resolute South Korean team in the round of 16. Luis Suarez who had scored the team's only goal in their 1 - 0 win over Mexico, scored one of the more memorable braces in recent memory with two fantastic goals to give his team a 2 - 1 win over the 2002 semi-finalists. Uruguay dominated proceedings but were provided some very nervy end moments by their opponents on the night. Suarez's exploits took the team to their first quarter-final in the tournament since 1970.
Oscar Tabarez is the mastermind behind this whole Uruguayan revolution since they missed out on qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The presence of European talent such as Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, who have taken the footballing world by storm, has helped him achieve this exciting new dawn in the history of Uruguayan football. In the finals, the Uruguayan defence has conceded just the one goal in four games having successfully navigated the group stage without conceding and this combination of a solid attack with a stronger defence gives one the confidence that they can go a long way.

The coach has played a 3 pronged attack in each of their last 3 games, and the move to add Edinson Cavani to the frontline, allowing Diego Forlan to drift deep to collect the ball and influence play, has worked wonders. The South Americans have a much better major tournament pedigree in comparison to their opponents on the night. While Ghana are making only their 2nd appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals, the Uruguayans have already won the tournament twice, which makes them favourites to win this encounter and keep their amazing run going.

    Ghana

    kwadwo_asamoah.jpg

Ghana belonged to a tough Group D, which consisted of Australia, Serbia and Germany. They edged their World Cup opener against Serbia 1 - 0, which was perhaps their defining match of the tournament. A 1-1 draw against 10-man Australia was followed by a loss to Germany, and with 4 points and no goals from open play, most considered the Ghanaians to be more than a touch fortunate to reach the last 16.

kwadwo_asamoah.jpgThere was nothing even remotely fortunate though about the Black Stars' win over USA in Round 2. Kevin-Prince Boateng gave them the early lead with a terrific solo effort, which really put the Africans in the ascendancy. But the US pulled the goal back thanks to a Landon Donovan penalty in the second half to make the final period of the game very nerve-racking. Asamoah Gyan, who has been the star of Africa in the tournament, scored the winner in the 3rd minute of extra time to make his team only the 3rd African side in World Cup history to go through to the final 8.

Milovan Rajevac has led the team to one of its most successful periods in their footballing history taking them to the African Cup of Nations final while also finishing their qualification undefeated. The Serbian has utilised the stars of the country to form the core of the team while giving opportunities to youngsters like Jonathan Mensah and Lee Addy in crucial games. With an average age of under-25, they are the youngest team in the World Cup, and by some distance. The team showed their endless energy against the Americans, who were completely overwhelmed by the fact that the Africans were running circles around them in extra time.

Asamoah Gyan has been the focal point of the team's success in the tournament scoring 3 of their five goals in the tournament. Richard Kingson has been another massive player for his country at the finals. The goalkeeper has pulled off some mind-boggling saves that have surely kept his team in the games they would have otherwise struggled to win. Rajevac hasn't utilised the big-name players too much in the tournament, the likes of Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari have appeared largely from the bench and have been reduced to impact players rather than staple first team members.

Everything about the team emits the kind of positivity that teams are utterly envious about. The Ghanaian success story has been one that provides a lot of inspiration to countries across the world who can do nothing but dream of a place in the World Cup finals. One hopes for the sake of the host continent that the light fed by African hopes never ceases.

    27-06-2010 USA 1 - 2 E Ghana - Match Report

    Key Players

Luis Suarez - The Ajax Amsterdam striker did take time to find his feet at the tournament, but he really has taken the tournament by storm now. The 23-year old has 3 goals from 4 starts in the tournament and after scoring almost 50 goals last season for his club, one was all but certain of him stealing our hearts. The Uruguayan has the ability to score great goals and is very swift with good ball skills. And one thing is for certain, the Ghanaian centre-halves will have a tough time keeping this man quiet.

Asamoah Gyan - One doubted his ability to score goals regularly from open play but 24-year old Asamoah Gyan surprised us all with his stunning volley against USA which also turned out to be the match winner. He too has 3 goals and averages a goal every other game for his national team. The Rennes striker plays on his own up front and his ability to hold the ball is crucial to Ghanaian attacks.

    Probable Line-Ups

Uruguay (4-3-3): Muslera, M.Pereira, Lugano, Godin, Fucile, Perez, Arevalo, A.Pereira, Forlan, Cavani, Suarez

Oscar Tabarez is likely to stick with the side that beat South Korea in the round of 16 as the team seems to be high on morale and confidence. In this set up, Forlan sits behind Suarez, trying to feed the strikers through the middle while also making runs into the box to make it a triple-spike attack. Cavani takes a wider role, usually on the right, playing on the shoulder of the left back and always trying to whip balls into the box. Diego Perez who had mammoth game against the Koreans would guard the back four while Arvalo Rios and Alvaro Pereira will giving him company. None of the midfield three usually venture too much into the final third.

Ghana (4-2-3-1): Kingson, Paintsil, John Mensah, Addy, Sarpei, Annan, Boateng, Muntari, Inkoon, Asamoah, Gyan

The Black Stars have a couple of big decisions to make with young Jonathan Mensah and Andre Ayew scheduled to sit out the quarter-final due to suspension. Sources suggest Ghana may appeal Ayew's booking, but as things stand there are a couple of spots up for grab. Lee Addy and Isaac Vorsah could compete for the defender's spot, with both players making one appearance thus far in the World Cup. Sulley Muntari will probably finally get his chance to start in place of Ayew. The rest of the squad is likely to remain unchanged.

Prediction - Though it would be great to see Ghana make it to the final four it seems difficult to not pick the Uruguayans. Their attack force is much too strong for the Black Stars who have given a good account of themselves in this year's finals. Ghana have trouble scoring too many goals. Even though they have scored atleast one goal in each and every one of their games one can't help but think that one goal may not be enough to dump Uruguay out of the tournament.

    Prediction - Uruguay 3 - 1 Ghana

    Argentina vs Germany

    argentinaf.jpg
    vs
    germany.jpg

Temperatures boiling, nail-biting edge of the seat anxieties, thrilling drama and if you want to be a witness to all of this, you should cancel any prior engagements on July 3rd, as a mouth-watering clash between two footballing giants Argentina and Germany takes place in the FIFA World Cup Quarter-finals in Cape Town. Both sides have been in blistering form, playing eye-catching football, tearing apart defences and now they confront each other in arguably the biggest game of the tournament so far. Huge expectations are pinned on this game not only by supporters but also by all neutrals. It's virtually a World Cup final and let's hope the game lives up to the hype that surrounds it.

    Argentina

    messi.jpg

After making heavy weather of their qualification campaign, the Argentines have taken the World by storm. They have mesmerized one and all with their accurate passing, great ball retention, clinical finishing and are looking red hot to go all the way.

They cleared the group stage with ease registering convincing wins over Nigeria, South Korea and Greece. The first knock-out clash against Mexico was a stern test but they passed it with relative ease. Mexico started the brighter of the two sides in the initial exchanges, but after the first goal (which should have been ruled out for offside), it was all one way traffic. Gonzalo Higuain added the second after a defensive howler by Mexican defender Ricardo Osario. Tevez made it three after a delightful strike from 25 yards out ensuring their progression to the next phase of the competition.

Going forward, the team has looked sublime and it's not surprising when you have the World's best player on your helm. Even though he is yet to find the back of the net, Lionel Messi is the heart and soul of this Argentine side, and has carved out several chances for fellow forwards Tevez and Higuain. Leading goal-scorer Higuain has stepped up well to the international stage and Tevez on back of his performance in the last game against Mexico has joined the party. Javier Mascherano has anchored the midfield ever so well, with Angel di Maria and Maxi Rodriguez joining the front men at every opportunity.

To sum things up, manager Diego Maradona has coaxed the best out of his players. His man-management skills are one of the key reasons for Argentina's success so far and he has been their inspiration and motivation. However, concerns still loom large over their back-line as their defence is fallible and is yet to face a stern test. They had some uncomfortable moments against the Mexicans in the initial stages and Martin Demichelis gifted a goal to the South Koreans in the group stage. Another concern would be their focus; they seem to lack that in the final 15-20 minutes against the Mexicans when they took their foot off the pedal. Any such lapses of concentration against the Germans could be very costly.

    Germany

    miroslav_klose.jpg

The Germans pulverized the English in their knock-out clash, handing them their biggest loss in World Cup finals history. German's youthful side proved too hot for the English as their fluid formation wreaked havoc in the Three Lions defence.

Germany under the stewardship of Joachim Loew has been a fearsome proposition. They demolished Australia in their opening game with their unending artillery. Then followed a shock defeat at the hands of Serbians but still they looked much the better side despite playing most of the game with 10 men. They sealed their progression into round 2 with a 1-0 win over Ghana. Concerns were raised whether this young squad will rise to the occasion against the experienced English and they have erased all doubts with a thumping 4-1 win.

The German team from back to front has been in great touch. Per Mertesacker and Arne Friedrich have forged a great partnership at the back. Sami Khedira has been so good that no one seems to notice the absence of Michael Ballack. Bastian Schweinsteiger has been the mortar of the midfield. Mesut Oezil has dazzled, captivating all with his play and Miroslav Klose becomes a different player when it comes to the World Cup finals, now just 3 goals behind Ronaldo's (Brazil) record of maximum goals in the World Cup finals.

The match against Argentina would be another amazing experience for this young German side, many of who were part of the side that won the U-21 World Cup. Their confidence would be sky-high and Joachim Loew will have to make sure that this doesn't turn into overconfidence. He has to make sure that this side retains its focus and concentration as they have all the quality in the world to hurt Argentina.

    June13, Germany 4-0 Australia
    June 18, Germany 0-1 Serbia
    June 24, Germany 1-0 Ghana
    June 27, Germany 4-1 England

    Key Players:

Lionel Messi: The Argentine wizard has been the conductor of the orchestra, the architect of the Argentine side. Only some superb goalkeeping and the woodwork have kept him from finding the back of the net, as he has had most of his shots on target (11). He invigorates this Argentine side, creates opportunities from heaps of dust, his first touch, his agility; his delivery is all of the highest quality. Moreover, he is a great team player; he has not shown his frustration for not finding the goal and has unselfishly carved chances for Higuain and Tevez.

Mesut Oezil: Before the World Cup, he was anonymous and now is on the verge of becoming a household name. The talented playmaker galvanizes the German side and has enthralled with his trickery in this tournament so far. Gifted with loads of talent, he is a sharp and shrewd player, times his runs into the box to perfection, his decision making at such a young age is astounding and has all the potential to become a world-class player.

    Probable Lineups:

Argentina: (4-2-4) Romero (GK), Heinze, Burdisso, Demichelis,Otamendi, Mascherano, Di Maria, Messi, Rodriguez, Higuain, Tevez,

Maradona is likely to stick with his same playing eleven. Demichelis and Burdisso would be the centre-backs and will have to be on their toes to keep Klose quiet. Mascherano will have a vital role to play in this game. Though he does not get much of the lime-light he is as important to Argentina as Messi. He needs to win those second balls and break Germany's slick passing, otherwise the Germans could well run away with this. Messi would be the playmaker with Tevez and Higuain as strikers.

Germany: (4-2-3-1) Neuer(GK), Lahm, Freidrich, Mertesacker, Boateng, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Oezil, Mueller, Podolski, Klose

Joachim Leow could very well name an unchanged side. They have quality all over the park. Klose up front will be a potent threat all day long. Oezil, Mueller and Podolski will interchange their positions pass the ball very well among them, make late runs and the trio promises so much. Schweinsteiger and Khedira will spray passes all over the pitch, diagonal balls to their wide players and also Lahm who loves to burst forward. Freidrich and Mertesacker will be at the heart of defence.

    Predictions:

Argentina has more individual quality and match-winners than the Germans. Messi could single-handedly tear the German defence apart. Germany on the other hand fair better as a team. On the ball, we think that both teams are superb but this game may well be determined by what the teams do when they are not in possession. Here, we think the Germans have a slight advantage as their young side if full of energy and enthusiasm. Germany will also pose a severe aerial threat with most of their players above 6 feet so the Argentines will have to be more alert and aware on set-piece situations. It's a game where we expect a lot of sparks, attacking intent and goals galore. The most important element will be which team holds its nerves and handle pressure better in this huge game and Germany after beating their traditional rivals England will be better prepared for it. We fancy each side to get on the score-sheet but we believe Germany will shade it 3-2.

    Spain vs Paraguay

The last quarter final match in the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Saturday 3 July 2010 sees South America versus Europe as Paraguay take on early favourites and current European champions Spain at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.
Paraguay So Far in the FIFA World Cup

Paraguay became the first team in this World Cup to win a penalty shoot-out when they beat Japan 5-3 on spot kicks after the two teams played out a dull goalless draw after extra time.

Paraguay topped their group after opening the campaign with a 1-1 draw against world champions Italy. Antolin Alcaraz put Paraguay one up just before the break but Italy equalised on the hour mark.

Life was more comfortable for Paraguay in the second match when they cruised to a comfortable win over Slovakia, with goals from Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros doing the damage.

They finished the group stages with a turgid goalless draw against New Zealand, who ended up drawing all three games and finished the tournament without a defeat.

Spain So Far in the FIFA World Cup

Spain advanced to the quarter finals thanks to a 1-0 win over local neighbours Portugal in the Round of 16. As expected, it was a tight game but Portugal lacked the flair that they’d shown in their 7-0 drubbing of North Korea and star player Cristiano Ronaldo hardly got a look in. The same cannot be said for Spain’s David Villa who created a number of chances and scored the only goal of the game just after the hour mark.

Spain started this tournament favourites but that soon went out of the window when a poor performance saw them lose the opening match 1-0 to Switzerland.

They recovered their form in the second match when they strolled past the group’s weakest link Honduras 2-0 thanks to a brace from David Villa.

David Villa was again on the score sheet in the 2-1 win over Chile, Andres Iniesta grabbing the second.
Football Betting Odds For Paraguay vs Spain

Football betting tips: The bookmakers have put Spain odd-on favourites to win this game with 1/2 or 4/9 being the most popular odds, though one bookmaker has opted for the bizarre 18/35. It is worth shopping around for a bet on Paraguay to win in ninety minutes as odds range from 5/1 to 7/1. For the draw, many have gone for 3/1 and that’s the best available.
