Del Bosque: Spain controlled the game and never let opponents feel comfortable

    194973hp2.jpg

Vicente Del Bosque showed his pleasure for how Spain performed during its 4-0 win over Belarus, and particularly the manner in which his side did not allow its opposition to settle.

An early goal from Jordi Alba set the world and European champions on their way to victory in Minsk, with Pedro scoring a fine hat trick to make the score 4-0 by the final whistle.

As often happens, Spain dominated possession during the game, and this control was something that Del Bosque highlighted when speaking to journalists after the match.

"We played well and controlled the match. They [Belarus] could not play to our level, and never felt comfortable on the pitch," the trainer said.

"It was a good game, very complete. The players felt very comfortable from the beginning, linked well, played with depth, and recovered the ball well. The talent and quality of our players did the rest."

When asked about the performance of Pedro, he said: "He's playing very well for his club. Pedro is fresh, dynamic, and has important offensive aggressiveness that breaks the mould slightly, and allows us to play on the front foot."

Sergio Ramos was substituted in the 70th minute for Raul Albiol, while David Silva also made way for Andres Iniesta in the second half, despite the Manchester City attacker enjoying a decent game.

"Sergio had a small knock, and though he did not have to come off, a change was preferable, though he wanted to keep playing. Silva had a card and I wanted to distribute the playing time between Silva and Andres Iniesta," Del Bosque explained.

Spain faces France in its next World Cup qualifying game on Tuesday, and Del Bosque was full of praise for their next opponents ahead of the match.

"It will be a very difficult game because France have an extraordinary squad. They have strength in depth in attack, and have very good players elsewhere who are calm but with physical power.

"It will be a difficult game," he added.

Soldado reveals 'immense' joy at Spain inclusion

    209436hp2.jpg

Roberto Soldado has admitted his "immense" delight at being involved in the Spain international setup once again.

The Valencia striker was overlooked for La Roja's Euro 2012 squad in favor of Fernando Llorente, Alvaro Negredo and Fernando Torres. But the 27-year-old hopes his "lucky" inclusion in the squad will help propel him to greater things for the world and European champions.

"I was lucky to be in the last squad call-up and in Georgia I left things well," he told Marca. "I was brought into the squad to score goals and had some luck. I'm back in the team and hopefully things can keep going well."

Soldado scored a late winner in Spain's 2014 World Cup qualifier against Georgia in September and he explained his jubilation at his fourth international goal for his country.

"[I felt] the most [happiness] that can be felt on a pitch. The joy was immense," the attacker said. "There have been games where I felt uncomfortable in the field, but none as much so as against Georgia.

"There was no way to find holes [in their defense], but eventually Cesc Fabregas was able to see a weakness and he gave me the pass to score."

The former Real Madrid forward was overlooked by Vincente Del Bosque in his lineup against Belarus on Friday night as Spain charged to a 4-0 victory thanks to a Pedro hat-trick.

Prior to the match, Soldado denied any conflict with the coach, adding: "[Any fall-out] is totally false. I've never had any problems with the coach. The relationship has always been good."

Low: Germany deserved 6-1 Ireland win

Germany coach Joachim Low believes that his side's 6-1 win over Republic of Ireland in Dublin was no less than it deserved on the night.

The Euro 2012 semifinalist cruised to an easy victory, with a double apiece from Marco Reus and Toni Kroos, as well as strikes from Miroslav Klose and Mesut Ozil ensuring the result.

And Germany's coach feels it put in a great performance, and also praised his defense, which put in a much-improved showing on the night.

"The team was focused from the beginning – that was noticeable throughout the whole week in training," he told reporters after the match. "When he had the ball, we played it forward quickly and found the right balance. We deserved to win by this margin. the opponents were unimaginative, playing long balls forward without any real pressure. We were much better organized defensively than in recent games."

Klose scored after a week of criticism from the likes of Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, but insisted that his only focus was helping his side to improve on poor showings against Austria and Faroe Islands.

"I think that the first two games were very difficult, but if we prepare for a game properly like today, we can come out with a result.

"It was nice to contribute to the win with a goal on my 125th cap. But I have no comment for Uli Hoeness' criticism. Much has been written, but it's best for me to keep my mouth shut and concentrate on football."

Muricy confirms Santos interest in Kaka

The attacking midfielder appears surplus to requirements at his current club, and the Brazilian side is keen to lure him back to his native country following the sale of Ganso

    200229hp2.jpg

The Peixe are in the market for a new attacking midfielder following the departure of Ganso to Sao Paulo, and they see the Real Madrid man as an ideal replacement.

Ramalho realities that it will not be easy to lure the 30-year-old to the Vila Belmiro, but refused to rule out a potential move in the near future.

"Who would have thought that Sao Paulo could pay that kind of money for Ganso? Anything is possible. Kaka is an option, and so are Diego and Robinho," the Santos coach said at a press conference.

"They are three important players. As I said, anything can happen. It is not just an economical question, but we have to take other aspects into account as well. And we have to act quick.

"We have to support the players we already have here, but it would be good to bring in players who can add something to the team."

Kaka appeared to be on his way to AC Milan earlier this summer, but the move eventually fell through as the Serie A giant was unable to meet Madrid's financial demands.

Vermaelen: Wilshere can be a world-beater

    215214hp2.jpg

Thomas Vermaelen believes that his Arsenal teammate Jack Wilshere has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the world.

The young English playmaker has been out for 14 months with several ankle and knee injuries, but has returned to action with the Under-21s.

"You know what he did in his first full season for Arsenal. He was amazing," Vermaelen told the club's official website. "For me, he can be one of the best midfielders in the world. He has the potential for that.

"I’m really happy he's coming back now. He's working on his match fitness and that’s the most important thing. I think in the future [he] will lift the team."

Although Wilshere has been absent for over a year, Vermaelen believes he can return as a better player with new strengths, citing his own injury-plagued 2010-11 season.

"When I was out with injury, I was in the gym a lot," the Belgian added. "Jack was in the gym even longer working hard on his weaknesses. You can see that now in his body on the pitch. For me he looks much stronger and that's good. Sometimes you have to take the positives when you’re out for more than a year and I think he’s done that."

Netherlands 3-0 Andorra: Oranje ease to straightforward home win

    218509hp2.jpg

The Netherlands recorded a 3-0 victory over Andorra in Friday's 2014 World Cup Group D qualifier at De Kuip in Rotterdam.

Rafael van der Vaart gifted the home side an early lead when he found the net from outside the area, before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar made it two shortly after. Ruben Schaken then added his name to the scoresheet after the break with a tap-in from close range to effectively kill off the game.

Oranje started the match with attacking intentions and needed only seven minutes to break the deadlock. Huntelaar set up Van der Vaart on the edge of the area, and the Hamburg star beat the Andorra goalkeeper with a shot in the bottom corner.

Andorra looked shaken after the opener and again conceded some 10 minutes later. Jeremain Lens got all the time and space he needed to send in a superb cross for Huntelaar, who somewhat fortunately deflected the ball past the glovesman with his back.

Kevin Strootman and Lens got chances to further extend Holland's lead, but the former aimed wide, while the latter blasted his shot over the bar. Bruno Martins Indi did find the net after a free kick, but his header was rightly disallowed for offside.

The hosts did get their third goal shortly after the interval, though. Lens once again went past his direct opponent down the left, before sending in a low cross toward the far post. Schaken reacted alert and beat his marker to be the ball to cap his debut with a goal.

Ron Vlaar then came close to adding his name to the score sheet, but his powerful header came back off the upright. Huntelaar, too, got a good chance to make it four, but he miraculously missed from five yards out.

Oranje sit in joint first in their group with nine points from three games, and meet Romania on Tuesday in their next encounter.

Andorra has lost all three games so far and is in last in Group D. It takes on Estonia on Tuesday.

Senegal-Ivory Coast African Cup of Nations qualifying game abandoned after crowd trouble

The crucial 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier between the two sides ended abruptly in the second half after missile launching fans caused the game to be stopped

    218731hp2.jpg

The crucial 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier between Senegal and Ivory Coast has been abandoned after crowd trouble brought the game to a premature halt.

Violent scenes occurred after Didier Drogba scored two goals to dash the hopes of the Teranga Lions, who now needed five goals to find their way to South Africa 2013.

The match officials including the referees were driven off the pitch as security officials tried to protect Ivory Coast supporters - who came under severe attack in the stadium.

The stands became empty after police fired teargas to disperse the unruly fans, who hurled plastic bottles onto the pitch while also burning flags and newspapers that turned the entire atmosphere at the Sedar Senghor Stadium hostile.

For close to 25 minutes, the players and security were left speechless on the pitch unsure of the fate of the game as hundreds of other Ivory Coast supporters, who were fleeing from danger, joined them in the inner perimeter for safety.

The match had entered into the 76th minute and Ivory Coast was leading by two goals (6-2 on aggregate). Early on, a fan had made an incursion onto the pitch which was the catalyst for ugly scenes to break out which marred the qualifier.

AC Milan is not up for sale, insists Galliani

The Rossoneri director has cited the enduring success of the former Italian Prime Minister's reign at the club, while quashing claims it will be sold to interested investors

    213402hp2.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has emphasized there is no reason for the club to be put up for sale, dismissing speculation president Silvio Berlusconi is prepared to part with his majority share to investing entities.

The Rossoneri's summer was characterised by the high-profile sales of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, raising questions amongst fans whether coach Massimiliano Allegri's side was able to compete on an even financial footing with the rest of Europe's greats.

However, Berlusconi's right-hand man has denied one of Milan's worst starts to the season will prompt an exit from the patron, dismissing continual suggestions to the contrary.

"I really think fans cannot complain at all," Galliani told Sky Sport Italia. "I want to remind everyone that the presidency of Berlusconi has delivered 28 trophies in 25 years.

"I repeat what I have already said before - there is no ongoing negotiation that regards the sale of Milan."

The 68-year-old's declaration comes in the wake of reports the San Siro outfit's board was considering offloading shares to Russian company Gazprom or the Qatar Investment Authority, in a bid to alleviate mounting organizational debts.

Rooney hoping he can become full-time England captain in the future

The Manchester United forward is set to hand back the armband to Steven Gerrard for England's trip to Poland on Tuesday, but vows to remain a leader in the camp

    218501hp2.jpg

Wayne Rooney has said he wants the England captaincy full-time in the future, but will be happy to return the armband to Steven Gerrard for the trip to Poland.

The Manchester United striker scored twice in a 5-0 win over San Marino at Wembley while skippering his country for the first time, helping the Three Lions to regain top spot in Group H.

But Roy Hodgson will reinstate Gerrard as captain for match in Warsaw on Tuesday, with the Liverpool skipper back from suspension, although Rooney hopes to claim the armband on a permanent basis in the future.

"If you can get the opportunity to captain your country, it's something which I think - as a player - you need to grab with both hands,” Rooney told the Football Association’s official website.

"In the future, hopefully that'll happen but, at the minute, Steven's our captain and he'll lead by example for us."

However, the Manchester United striker has vowed to continue acting as a leader and inspiring his younger teammates even if he is not in possession of the armband.

“It won't be a different way I look at the game or the way I try to do things,” he added.

"I always try to talk to my team-ates and I feel I can help them. It's something that I was lucky to have when I was younger and it's something which I feel it'll benefit them.":cool:

Clint Dempsey hails Eddie Johnson's international resurrection

After Eddie Johnson's two-goal performance against Antigua & Barbuda on Friday, Tottenham Hotspur star Clint Dempsey paid tribute to his friend and national team colleague.

Johnson was nearly out of soccer less than a year ago. After his contract with English Premier League club Fulham was not renewed, he failed to secure a contract with Mexican side Pachuca. Only a move to MLS, and a stellar season with the Seattle Sounders, which has seen him net 14 goals in 26 games, revitalized his career.

"It's great for him," said Dempsey, who also played alongside Johnson at Fulham. "You know he's had a tough time in Europe, but he kept working hard, and showed that he has quality."

"He got goals in MLS and he got two big goals for us tonight. I'm proud of him, you know what I mean? As a teammate, but also as a friend."

Rodgers hints at January arrivals at Liverpool

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hinted at the possibility of adding to his squad in the January transfer window.

The Reds were left with just two senior strikers following a disastrous final day of the summer window, in which Andy Carroll was loaned to West Ham whilst the Anfield outfit failed to secure a replacement.

With Fabio Borini ruled out due to a broken foot sustained on international duty, Rodgers has found himself short up top, but hopes to correct that in the near future.

“I’ve had good conversations with the owners and they understand where we are at as a team at the moment," he told reporters. “If we can get our best 11 players on the pitch then our team is comparable to any team in the league.”

Liverpool currently sits in 14th place in the Premier League, having gained just seven points from its opening six fixtures.

Mascherano: We are reliving a moment in time with Messi

Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has lauded the genius of Lionel Messi, comparing the forward's reign to be one similar to that of national idol Diego Maradona.

Messi conjured up two goals on Saturday to overcome Uruguay 3-0, leading Mascherano to shower praise on the diminutive striker for his goalscoring exploits.

"We are all privileged to relive a moment," exalted the 28-year-old to gathered reporters after the match. "In my case, I grew up in the days of Maradona, but to be next to Messi is a privilege few possess."

Remarking on the nature of the late victory, the versatile player commented: "When we scored, spaces begun appearing, and that's where you can see the reality and potential of this team. Defending was very comfortable, and we had the necessary patience and order."

The Albiceleste now travel to Chile to take on Claudio Borghi's men on Tuesday.
