Brazil 3-0 South Korea: Leandro Damiao at the double as impressive Selecao cruises into Olympics final

    201819hp2.jpg

Brazil booked its place in the Olympic final with a comfortable 3-0 win over South Korea courtesy of goals from Romulo and a double from Leandro Damiao at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Mano Menezes' side started slowly but found its stride to put an end to South Korea's 18-game unbeaten run, lining up a place in Sunday's final against Mexico, who overcame Japan 3-1 earlier in the day.

Despite playing 120 minutes in the quarterfinal against Team GB, South Korea began the game far stronger than Brazil creating a number of early chances that served as a wake up call to the tournament favorite.

After a gentle opening 10 minutes, a short South Korean corner led to a neat piece of footwork and backpost cross that saw Kim Hyun-Sung rise to seemingly head into an empty net. Only the presence of Ji Dong-Won and an inadvertent block kept the scores level.

The Sunderland striker was the lead protagonist in the opening stages, creating another chance for Kim as he clipped a diagonal ball to the backpost. His strike partner rose above the 19-year-old goalkeeper Gabriel and forced the ball back across the box for the onrushing Ji but he was denied by clearance more suited to martial arts than football – averting danger and fortunately avoiding conceding a penalty.

Brazil eventually buzzed into life and forced Beom-Young into a series of saves beginning with Damiao's low left-footed drive from the edge of the box that was just diverted to safety.

Seconds later a weak back-pass forced Beom-Young from his goal and into a sliding tackle on Damiao on the edge of the box. Though the block was firm, the rebound fell to Sandro but South Korea were relieved to see his tame first-time chip easily cleared off the line.

Romulo continued to build the pressure further with a precise curling effort that Beom-Young pawed into the path of Damiao, but the 23-year-old's cross-shot found neither the goal or a team-mate.

For all Beom-Young's good work, it was undone on the 38th minute as Mano Menezes' side took the lead through Romulo.

Sandro robbed South Korea of possession on the halfway line and Neymar picked up the loose ball, immediately shifting it inside to Oscar. The new 25 million pound Chelsea signing carried the ball to the edge of the box before sliding a neat pass to the overlapping Romulo who struck his shot low and under the keeper at his near-post.

It was a touch cruel on South Korea, who had been the better side for the first 20 minutes but Brazil struck at a crucial time and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Hong Myong-Bo's team emerged for the second half displaying the same positive ethos that caused the Selecao problems in the first period and it was extremely unlucky not to be awarded a penalty as Kim Bo-Kyung was tripped by Sandro in the box as he ran to collect a through ball.

But the early rally was quelled by Brazil as Marcelo galloped forward from left-back to link up with Neymar. The much-vaunted striker played a one-two on the edge of the box, before hitting the byline and cutting the ball back for the waiting Damiao who made no mistake from 15 yards, smashing the ball back across goal to double Brazil's lead.

And it took just five more minutes for Damiao to find his second of the game as good work from Neymar and Oscar saw an attempted pass to the Santos striker deflect into his path.

The Internacional forward who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham, reacted sharply to toe-poke the ball into Beom-Young's bottom right-hand corner from roughly 12 yards.

Hulk and Alexandre Pato were introduced for the final 15 minutes and Brazil relaxed, switching to the showboating style synonymous with the national team.

But it was Neymar who continued to exude the flamboyant nature that has made him such a watchable figure. His run in the 90th minute down the left flank and into the box included stepovers, a sudden stop and a beautifully flighted cross that was just misread by Oscar, preventing Brazil making it four. And that was how the game stayed.

South Korea will look back at this tournament with pride but ultimately it came across a team, that when in the mood, has too much attacking potency to contain. The final scoreline ensured Brazil maintained its record of netting three goals in every Olympic game and will certainly ensure it retains its tag as favorite to win a maiden gold medal.

Giovani dos Santos risks missing Olympic final thanks to muscle injury

    176955hp2.jpg

LONDON -- Not everything is good news for Mexico following its historic semifinal win over Japan, as striker Giovani dos Santos could miss the gold medal match against Brazil due to an injury.

"Unfortunately, he has a muscle injury," said Luis Fernando Tena to the assembled media after the win. "[We] don't know the magnitude of the injury yet, we have to wait and run some tests."
Dos Santos surprisingly came off at the start of the second half, being replaced by Raul Jimenez, fueling speculation that something was wrong with the Tottenham player.

Pressed for a prognosis, Tena said that the extent of the injury has not been sufficiently identified.

"I don't know, he's doubtful at this point. We have to find out," the Mexico U-23 manager said.

Although not having Dos Santos for the Olympic final would certainly be a talking point, Tena instead focused on the rest of his team, highlighting the players' ability to overcome adversity thus far.

"The players have a new mentality, they want to play abroad now, they have no complexes and they want to succeed."

Finally, Tena revealed that Mexico's unprecedented run has already yielded a call from the country's president, Felipe Calderon.

"I'm happy that we've been able to provoke such euphoria in such a soccer-mad country as ours," finished Tena.

'The very thought of him fixing games is out of the question' - Moggi backs Juventus coach Conte

    135685hp2.jpg

Luciano Moggi has given his support to Juventus coach Antonio Conte, who faces allegations of failing to report match-fixing during his time in charge of Siena.

The 43-year-old could receive a 15-month ban if he is found guilty of not alerting the authorities to a potential fix, an allegation he denies.

Conte joined Juve in the summer of 2011, replacing Luigi Delneri, and masterminded a Serie A triumph in his first season at the helm.

Moggi has denied the claim that Old Lady coach could be involved in the betting scandal, believing that it would be out of character for the Italian.

"I have known Antonio for 10 years," he told Radio Kiss Kiss. "The very thought of him fixing games is out of the question."

Moggi also criticized the Italian Football Federation over its handling of the most recent scandal, suggesting that because only ex-Siena player Filippo Carobbio has accused Conte, the coach should not be charged.

"Giving a platform to someone who admits he fixed matches while another 13-odd teammates say it was not true seems typical of the current Federation."

The judgement from the Disciplinary Commission is expected on Thursday.

FIFA set to investigate Canadian women

    201618hp2.jpg

FIFA has announced it will be investigating the Canadian women’s national team for incidents following the team’s 4-3 defeat to the United States in the Olympic semi-final on Monday.

“Following the Olympic women's semi-final match between Canada and the USA played at Old Trafford on the evening of 6 August, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee is currently analysing incidents that occurred after the conclusion of the match," read a statement made by FIFA on Tuesday. “Further information will be provided only after the Committee are in possession of all the elements of the case.”

While FIFA does not specify what the incidents in question are, but they most likely relate to criticism of match referee Christina Pedersen by head coach John Herdman, captain Christine Sinclair and several other players.

Pedersen’s decision to award an indirect free kick after Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod appeared to hold the ball for longer than the maximum permitted time of six seconds led to a late Abby Wambach equalizer before the American scored again in the game’s final breath to win the match and advance to the final.

    Klopp demands defensive improvement

    181047hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has told his defense that they must improve as the German champion gears up for the start of the season.

Die Schwarzgelben stuttered to a disappointing 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen in the annual pre-season LIGA Total! Cup before losing on penalties.

And with Sunday's DFL-Supercup match with Bayern Munich approaching fast, the 45-year-old has warned them that such shoddy displays will not be tolerated.

"I wanted them to take on board the things we have done in training," he told Bild. "I have seen nothing of the sort with the defence. That's not right.

"This has taught me an important lesson. We had no security. We do not have much to do, but we are preparing."

After taking on Jupp Heynckes' side, Dortmund takes on Oberneuland in the DFB-Pokal on August 18, before finally getting its Bundesliga campaign under way on August 24.

Marco Fabian pushes on to final after 'unforgettable' semifinal win over Japan

    201801hp2.jpg

LONDON -- Marco Fabian shined for Mexico at just the right time after a shaky start to the Olympic tournament put him under the media microscope.

The Chivas player scored a crucial goal for El Tri in the first half against Japan after the CONCACAF champs fell behind early en route to a 3-1 in the semifinals at Wembley.

"This isn't over, we're going for it all," said an excited Fabian after the match. "We want gold, right now we have silver and we have to think about winning the final. I have to thank God for these last 90 minutes, they are unforgettable."

Fabian scored his first goal of the tournament when Giovani dos Santos crossed in a corner kick that was touched on by Jorge Enriquez. Sitting a couple of yards in front of goal, Fabian guided the ball in with his head to make it 1-1.

Later on, Oribe Peralta and Javier Cortes would score go-ahead goals for Mexico in order for El Tri to clinch its first Olympic final.

Following a rough start after he was tipped to be one of Mexico's biggest offensive threats, Fabian was quick to reference the attention he had received in the early stages of the tournament.

"I want to thank those who have always been with me for their support, [I'd like to thank] those who weren't, too," he said. "This is my reward after so much work, effort and time. Now we must go along the same road."

Jorge Mendes holds the key as Atletico Madrid pursue Bruno Alves

    194374hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid is lining up a bid for central defender Bruno Alves, should Diego Godin leave the Vicente Calderon this summer, according to reports in AS.

Atletico is looking to cash in on the Uruguayan defender, and may turn to the Zenit St Petersburg man, who is a client of Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes.

The high-profile representative has been involved with many top transfers involving Iberian players in recent years, and his Gestifute agency enables third parties to part-own the economic rights of footballers.

Last summer, Mendes helped bring Falcao to the Spanish capital from Porto, and he is said to enjoy a strong relationship with many members of Atletico's board of directors.

And he could prove vital in this deal. With Bruno Alves' 2.3 euro million salary said to be too expensive for Los Colchoneros - not least because they do not want to unsettle their current, lesser-paid players - the club are hoping to use Mendes' influence to get his client to lower his demands.

Bruno Alves, who formed a solid partnership with Pepe for his country at Euro 2012, moved to the Russian club for 22 million euros in August 2010.

Should the move not materialise, however, Atleti may move for Porto stopper Rolando, although, according to the reports, he may also be too costly for the Madrid club.

    Liverpool want £25m for Agger

    danielaggerceleb20120128_576x324.jpg

ESPN understands that Liverpool will only consider an offer of £25 million for Denmark international Daniel Agger, following interest from Manchester City.

Liverpool sources have confirmed that Manchester City have made approaches over Agger, 27, but that the two sides are some way apart in their valuation of the player, who has two years left on his contract.

With talks over a new deal at Anfield having stalled, City have made their interest known and indicated that they would be willing to go as high as £18 million for the centre-back, but that falls well short of his club's valuation.

It is thought, though, that Liverpool would find it difficult to resist a bid of £22 million - the same fee that Manchester City paid rivals Everton for Joleon Lescott in 2009.With the two sides still to find a compromise, England winger Adam Johnson could be used as a makeweight to smooth out a deal.

Agger was omitted from Liverpool's squad for last week's Europa League qualifier with Gomel in Belarus, which many saw as an indication of an impending departure, although Liverpool and manager Brendan Rodgers have insisted that it was purely down to concerns over fitness.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are hopeful of securing a £15 million deal for Swansea midfielder Joe Allen in the days to come, despite Swans manager Michael Laudrup insisting that the midfielder is worth £20 million.

Buffon: Retirement is not on my mind

    175477hp2.jpg

Gianluigi Buffon has quashed suggestions that he could be ready to retire from professional football, claiming he is only thinking about bringing renewed success to Juventus.

The 34-year-old's comments coincide with the Old Lady's return to the Champions League next season, following a two-year hiatus from Europe's premier club competition.

"I haven't considered retiring. The only thing on my mind today is football," affirmed Buffon to assembled reporters at a press conference in China, where Juventus is due to play Napoli for the Italian Super Cup on Saturday. "We've retained a great squad from last season, and the club's work in the transfer market will make us even stronger for our Champions League return. No matter who the opponent might be, we will always aim to win."

The 2006 World Cup winner also spoke about his role in Italy's national setup, taking time to praise enigmatic striker Mario Balotelli as well as Spanish counterpart and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

"It is a little early to talk about playing for Italy in the 2014 World Cup, but I will always carry the desire to play for the Azzurri," he said. "Balotelli had a great Euro 2012, and his performances will certainly help him grow into an even more mature and complete player.

"Casillas is a great player, an excellent keeper and a man with sportsmanship, irregardless of whether he is better than I am."

Buffon captained Cesare Prandelli's men to the final of the European finals in Kiev, only to see his side crumble at the final hurdle, capitulating 4-0 to Spain.

Aquilani hits out at Liverpool's high asking price after completing Fiorentina move

    201028hp2.jpg

Former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani believes the high asking price placed on him by the Anfield outfit prevented him seeking a move away from the club before his switch to Fiorentina.

The Italian sealed a move back to Serie A last week after a miserable three-year stint in Merseyside, two of which he spent on loan at Juventus and AC Milan after failing to force his way into the first team in England.

Aquilani revealed, despite not being a part of the club’s plans, his exit was blocked by the Reds’ valuation of him exceeding the price both Italian clubs were willing to pay to make his stay permanent.

"Did I feel unwanted? I think you all know how things went for me," he told reporters. "I would have stayed at Milan if I had played 25 games. After my 22nd appearance, I was told that I would not play any more games.

"I appreciate their honesty. They explained to me that it was due to economic issues, and they preferred not to spend that money. Even the year before, I had a very high asking price, one that Juventus chose not to exercise. The market has changed and Liverpool always asked too much money for me."

Mertesacker: Arsenal is in a better place than last season

    143848hp2.jpg

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes the club is a lot stronger this year than it was at the start of the last season.

The Gunners lost skipper Cesc Fabregas and influential midfielder Samir Nasri last August which disrupted their preparations for their campaign.

However, after signing Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and so far retaining the services of Robin van Persie, Mertesacker believes Arsene Wenger’s side is in good shape for the Premier League opener against Sunderland.

“I think we have a better situation than last year,” he told the club’s official website. “The team is full of characters, good players and every position [has competition]. So I am looking forward to the season because I think we can show the potential we have in a better way than last year.

"We need good signings and I feel that these players will help us a lot. Giroud is a good striker and I have seen a lot of him in training because he was not out in Asia, so we trained a lot together. He made a good effort and hopefully in the games he will show that as well. Santi Cazorla has just signed so we will see him in training and in games in the short term.”

The German international believes his national teammate Podolski has had no problems settling at the Emirates and feels he is set to have a successful debut season in the Premier League.
“I try to do my very best [to help him settle],” said the defender. “I had the same thing last year and it is good to have a lot of help in your first moments in a new city with a new language. It is good to have some German friends around you.

“But the Club is doing well also. You have a lot of people who have been very helpful from the beginning. Everything is going fine for him and I am very happy that he is here to give his best for Arsenal. From the beginning he was confident about speaking English. He is a confident guy with more than 100 caps for Germany, so he has massive experience. For us to have him here is a massive impact.”

Impossible for Lille to replace Hazard, admits Mavuba

    198707hp2.jpg

Lille captain Rio Mavuba has lamented the loss of former talisman Eden Hazard to Chelsea, although he remains confident the club will pull together to ensure he is not missed.

"Nobody can replace Hazard," claimed Mavuba to Footlille.com. "We have lost a big player."

The 21-year-old Belgium attacker departed Rudi Garcia's outfit earlier this summer in a massive 40.5 million euros move to the Champions League winners, and the former Villarreal man was quick to pay tribute to his old team-mate.

"The force at Lille has always been a collective one, and since the transfer made both the club and Hazard a little more money, there was no choice," Mavuba explained.

"Salomon Kalou is a different type of player, but he will be an asset in helping us meet our objectives."

Hazard scored 20 goals in 38 Ligue 1 appearances last season, firing the Metropole side to third and subsequent Champions League play-off qualification.

Kompany after more success with Manchester City

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has outlined his desire to repeat the success of last campaign and win more trophies at the Etihad Stadium.

Roberto Mancini’s side won the Premier League in dramatic fashion on the last day of the campaign as late goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero stole the title away from
Manchester United in the dying seconds of the game.

Kompany believes the story of that final day clash will live long in the memories of City fans, but feels more determined to put that triumph behind him and focus on winning more silverware.

"The last game was a game that will remain a very strong part of our history. I think there will be people speaking about this game for 50, 100 years to come," he told the club’s in-house television channel. "But in the same way I have enjoyed it, I am looking forward already. One of the main things for me is to not keep looking back at this game for too long. I just want to move on.

"It has been a big story all over the world. I have traveled a lot and met a lot of people from different countries and all of them have got their reminder of that particular moment. All of them have somehow experienced it in a special way. But looking forward for me, this is over now. It is about what lies ahead."

Ben Arfa eyeing Premier League title charge with Newcastle

    178098hp2.jpg

Hatem Ben Arfa has insisted that Newcastle United can challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Magpies pressed for a top-four spot throughout last term but were just edged out by Tottenham and Arsenal, eventually finishing fifth but the Frenchman believes his team-mates have enough quality to improve on that placing.

Ben Arfa told The Evening Chronicle: “All the players have stayed here. I think we have to have confidence as we have very good players.

He added, “Maybe if we feel very good we can finish between fourth and first. Why not? Why can we not say we could be champions? Anything is possible.

“We can challenge for it. We have good players, a good stadium and great supporters. We have to have confidence. I believe we can do what I say.”

Ben Arfa was given an extended break from preseason training after representing France at Euro 2012, and the winger insisted he was happy to be back on Tyneside after a troubled summer that saw him fall out with Les Bleus coach Laurent Blanc and receive a fine for his actions.

After returning to action with the Magpies against Hartlepool United on Tuesday, Ben Arfa is looking to ramp up his fitness ahead of the new campaign.

He reflected: “It’s nice to be back on the pitch and I am happy I played 45 minutes. I feel very good. I will step things up and hopefully I can be ready quickly.

“I stayed in Europe for one month and even though I was on holiday I played football with my friends.

“Now I feel good but I go step by step. The most important thing was to be on the pitch and feel the sensation again.

“I very happy to stay here. I’m happy to be back at Newcastle again. I love this club and the supporters. I love them and they like me. It is very good for me to see the fans here.

“Everybody wants me here. They told me to ‘come on’ and encouraged me. It is great support for me.”
