Zenit set to land Hulk for €50m

    hulkcelebporto20110913_576x324.jpg

Zenit St Petersburg look set to clinch the signature of Porto striker Hulk, with Premier League clubs having been priced out of a proposed €50 million transfer.

Hulk, 26, has long been linked with a switch to Chelsea, but Porto's asking price - in excess of £40 million - has proved a stumbling block.

It now appears Russian side Zenit will land the Brazil international. A source told ESPN: "Despite all the rumours and speculation, no English clubs were bidding for Hulk - he was far too expensive."Zenit will pay a minimum of €50 million. The fee might be as high as €60 million. I expect it will go ahead in the next 24 hours, but no English club was prepared to come anywhere near to that figure."

Porto's media officer, Ahaz Felleger, said this week: "Tuesday or, maximum, Wednesday, there will be a solution. There are three proposals from abroad - two English clubs and Zenit. There are talks with the player and with Porto."Staying in Porto is also a real possibility. He is very satisfied and there is no problem."

    Spurs poised to land Lloris

    hugollorisdivemiss20120623_576x324.jpg

Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of agreeing a £12 million deal to sign France international keeper Hugo Lloris from Lyon.

Tottenham are noted for their frantic activity in the final hours of the transfer window and, after agreeing a deal with Fulham to sign midfielder Moussa Dembele on Tuesday, they are now confident of signing Lloris ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed that Spurs have stepped up their pursuit of Lloris in recent days, with manager Andre Villas-Boas viewing the 25-year-old as a better long-term option in his first team than 41-year-old Brad Friedel.

Shakhtar Donetsk forward Willian remains a firm target for Spurs and his eagerness to move to North London should see the deal concluded before Friday as well, with Villas-Boas on course for a revamped team ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture against Norwich at White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile, reports in Germany suggest Rafael van der Vaart's proposed move to Hamburg may yet be revived, with Spurs willing to part with the injury prone Dutchman if they sign suitable replacements in the coming days.

    Martinez passes Bayern medical

    javimartinezspain20120416_576x324.jpg

Javi Martinez has passed a medical at Bayern Munich, paving the way for him to complete what would be a German record transfer.
Reports in Germany said Martinez, 23, successfully completed his medical tests at 02.44 BST. The Spain international midfielder has a €40 million release clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract.

Martinez told waiting reporters: "Todo bien" - meaning "everything's fine" - as he left the medical. He had been flown to Bavaria on a private plane after training with the Bilbao squad for the last time on Tuesday afternoon.

Bayern's chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reached a breakthrough in negotiations with the Spanish FA and Bilbao on Tuesday, the German newspaper Bild reported.

The paper said the transfer had been on hold because Bilbao did not want to sell Martinez but Spanish transfer rules say a player can buy himself out of his contract and deliver the release clause money to the Spanish FA.

Under Spanish tax laws, this would add an extra cost to the €40 million cost of the release clause.Reports in Germany say Martinez will fly back to Spain and deliver the money, and Bayern president Uli Hoeness told Bayrischer Rundfunk he was "very optimistic" that the transfer could be completed within the next few days.

The Martinez transfer speculation became a saga soon after it was first reported by Bild two weeks ago. Munich legends had plenty to say, with comments by Franz Beckenbauer ranging from "he'd form a fantastic duo with Schweinsteiger" to "we don't need the player".

When completed, the deal will eclipse the previous German transfer record, also set by Bayern when they signed Mario Gomez from VfB Stuttgart for a reported total of €33 million, but increase the pressure on the club to get back to winning ways after two years without a trophy.
Later on Wednesday, Athletic caused confusion by posting the following statement on their website: "Athletic Club wants to state that at no moment did it authorise the journey of its player Javier Martinez to Munich on 28 August. To see how it should react, Athletic Club has asked for an explanation from the player, who remains under their control."

    Martinez completes Bayern move

    javimartinezspain20120416_576x324.jpg

Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez has completed a German record transfer to Bayern Munich from Athletic Bilbao.

Reports said Martinez, 23, successfully completed his medical tests at 02.44 BST after the release clause of €40 million release clause was met by the German giants following tough negotiations.

"I am very happy and looking forward to playing for a club with such a history," Martinez told Bayern Munich's official TV channel. "It was a long wait. But finally it's over."

In a statement on the Bayern Munich website Bayern director of sports Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: "It was complicated from day one, as there was no team play with Athletic Bilbao. But we are all the happier that Javi Martinez at long last has joined us. We had to solve taxing and legal problems over the last few days. The good news is we succeeded."

Rummenigge admitted it was "a high fee" but that the player would indirectly take a share in the €40 million spent. Reportedly Martinez has agreed on a salary cut of up to €2 million per year.

The Martinez transfer speculation became a saga soon after it was first reported by Bild two weeks ago. Bayern legends had plenty to say, with comments by Franz Beckenbauer ranging from "he'd form a fantastic duo with Schweinsteiger" to "we don't need the player".

Earlier on Wednesday, Athletic caused confusion by posting the following statement on their website: "Athletic Club wants to state that at no moment did it authorise the journey of its player Javier Martinez to Munich on 28 August. To see how it should react, Athletic Club has asked for an explanation from the player, who remains under their control."

However, it now appears that the deal has been done, eclipsing the previous German transfer record, also set by Bayern when they signed Mario Gomez from Stuttgart for a reported €33 million.

Tottenham decision rests with Lloris, say Deschamps and Lyon president Aulas

    139130hp2.jpg

Tottenham is discussing personal terms with Hugo Lloris and it is up to the French shot stopper to decide on his future, says Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

A fee has yet to be formally agreed, but the two sides are close enough in their valuations that Spurs have been granted permission to speak to the French number one.

“We were close to Tottenham and the decision is now up to Hugo, who must have had a number of contacts with the English club,” Aulas told the club’s official website.

“This transfer can be done at the end of the transfer window.”

Aulas also inferred that Lyon’s current financial constraints, and a need to trim its wage bill, have factored into the decision to allow Lloris to leave.

"Would it be better for us to see him leaving? Since we have an objective to reduce the wage bill, this transfer enters in our programme,” Aulas continued.

“But if he stays here, we will be very happy."

France manager Didier Deschamps, who played in the Premier League briefly with Chelsea, has also revealed that he has discussed the move with Lloris.

"I talked with him by phone," Deschamps said. "He has a choice to make between Lyon and Tottenham. I talked with him but what was said concerns just me and him. He has until Friday to decide, we will see."

Sacchi: Tito Vilanova will find it difficult to repeat Pep's achievements

    156548hp2.jpg

Former Italy national boss Arrigo Sacchi believes that Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova will have a hard time living up to what Pep Guardiola achieved at Camp Nou.

The 66-year-old has given his endorsement to the new man at the helm of the Catalan side, but insists it will be very tough to be as successful as his predecessor.

"I like Tito Vilanova, but, I think it will be difficult for him to repeat what Pep did," said Sacchi in an interview with Esports COPE.

"Going after a coach like Guardiola is very complicated."

Sacchi then went on to talk about a number of players that have been on the move in this summer's transfer window, including Bojan Krkic who has just signed with AC Milan.

"I hope things go well for him at Milan. For both his sake and the team's," he continued.

"He started as one of the most promising young players, but then he lost the way a little. Hopefully he can get his career back on track at the Rossoneri.

"At Barcelona, after failing to adapt, he was moved on to Roma. I have confidence in him and think that at Milan he can succeed."

A one-time sporting director at Real Madrid, Sacchi also gaves his views on the capital side's latest signing, Luka Modric.

"He is a great signing for Madrid. He is very much a modern footballer, good both on and off the ball. I really like him," he said.

While he praised Real's latest acquisition, he questioned Barcelona's signing of Alex Song.

"He [Song] is a very good player, but Barca already have Busquets and Mascherano who can play in the same position, so I am not sure about this signing."

The former Italy boss then concluded with some thoughts on the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva from Milan this summer.

"It is clear that Milan have lost important players. In recent years the team has been planned around the strength of these two players.

"Now that they have lost them both, the side will have to play more like a team, without focusing on the particular strengths of a certain few. Allegri has much work ahead of him," he concluded.

AC Milan completes signing of Roma's Bojan

    188133hp2.jpg

AC Milan has officially announced the signing of Roma forward, Bojan Krkic.

The Spaniard departs the side from the capital after just one season, having signed with the 2010-11 Serie A champion on a one-year loan.

The former Barca player successfully completed his medical on Wednesday morning and will be unveiled on Thursday as the latest addition to Massimiliano Allegri's Milan squad.

The Rossoneri turned the focus towards signing the 22-year-old earlier this week after its bid to sign Real Madrid's Kaka fell through.

Last season Bojan made 33 appearances for Roma, scoring seven goals.

Tottenham completes 15 million pound Dembele signing

    206101hp2.jpg

Tottenham has confirmed the signing of Mousa Dembele from Fulham for around 15 million pounds.

Spurs made a bid on Tuesday to trigger a release clause in Dembele’s contract and the midfielder has now agreed personal terms and passed a two-part medical.

Tottenham announced the transfer on its official Twitter account, with Dembele considered by manager Andre Villas-Boas as a replacement for Luka Modric, who signed for Real Madrid in Monday in a 33.2m pound deal.

Dembele cost Fulham 5m pounds when he signed from AZ Alkmaar in 2010 and caught the eye of leading clubs across Europe after converting to a central midfield role during last season.

Fulham had announced on Tuesday night that Dembele was heading to White Hart Lane after he was left out of the Cottagers' 1-0 League Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Dembele revealed over the weekend that he wanted to “go to the top”, having caught the eye with a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester United on Saturday.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas ruled out for up to three months with thigh injury

    205754hp2.jpg

Lucas Leiva will miss up to three months of the season with a thigh injury, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Brazilian defensive midfielder limped off after just four minutes in Liverpool’s game against Manchester City on Sunday.

Lucas picked up the thigh injury during Liverpool’s pregame warmup against Manchester City, but started the game regardless, lasting just four minutes before being replaced by Jonjo Shelvey.

The injury is a huge blow for Lucas, who only recently returned from a cruciate ligament injury that caused him to miss the second half of last season.

“[It] looks like Lucas will be out for a few months. Early indication is he will be back after 2-3 months out,” Brendan Rodgers told reporters at a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League second leg tie with Hearts.

Rodgers is, however, optimistic that Lucas can make a quick recovery from the injury, adding: “He is a quick healer so I expect him to be back sooner than that.”

Lucas will miss a number of important fixtures for Liverpool, including a visit from Manchester United and the Merseyside derby.

The Brazilian took to Twitter to reveal his disappointment at picking up another serious injury.

He wrote: “No words to describe my feelings at the moment. It is been hard to be positive but I am sure better days will come. YNWA.”

Arsenal revives Walcott talks amid Manchester City interest

    178763hp2.jpg

Arsenal is ready to sell Theo Walcott to Manchester City this week if they cannot break the contract stalemate with the winger.

Negotiations will resume between the Londoners and Walcott’s representatives on Wednesday, with both parties hopeful that a resolution can be reached as the clock ticks down to Friday’s transfer deadline. ESPN confirmed that Walcott and Arsenal will continue to work on a deal before considering any sales."Negotiations are ongoing," an Arsenal spokesperson told ESPN.

Walcott's representatives told ESPN they had "no comment to make."
Manchester City has turned its attention to the England international as it considers alternatives to Scott Sinclair, whose expected move from Swansea City hit a stumbling block on Monday.

City director Brian Marwood is close to the Walcott camp and has enquired about the player’s interest in a shock switch to Etihad Stadium. Liverpool and Chelsea are also believed to be monitoring developments as deadline day approaches.

However, the interest is strongest from City with manager Roberto Mancini putting pressure on the club’s executives to recruit an established wide player after selling Adam Johnson to Sunderland in a deal worth up to 18.9 million euros last Friday.

Walcott has been locked in contract negotiations with Arsenal since the back end of last season and had been hoping for a significant upgrade on his current 75,000 euros-a-week deal, which has already entered its final year.Goal.com revealed back in April that the 23-year-old, who is understood to be have been disappointed at the recent sale of Robin van Persie, had been holding out for a 125,000 euros-a-week salary that would now make him comfortably the club’s highest earner.

But Arsenal will not be held to ransom by the player and has made it clear it will not increase its package for Walcott beyond 100,000 euros-a-week.

Both parties stress that negotiations are ongoing and are hopeful that a resolution can swiftly be found, although the likelihood of a transfer for around 12 million pounds is increasing while Arsenal’s contract offer remains unsigned.

This has put City on red alert, although senior Arsenal officials, including chief executive Ivan Gazidis and manager Arsene Wenger, will be aware of the repercussions should Walcott follow Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri on the already well-trodden path to Etihad Stadium.

The winger established himself as an undisputed first team regular last season, starting 29 of Arsenal’s first 32 Premier League matches and only succumbing to injury in the final weeks of the season when he tore his hamstring. He was the club’s second leading scorer behind Van Persie, weighing in with 11 in all competitions.

City is desperate to beef up their squad after running into so many dead ends during an increasingly frantic search for reinforcements, with Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins branding them “unprofessional” for their pursuit of Scott Sinclair.

City is understood to have tabled a 7.5m pounds bid for the winger last week but talks have stalled over the composition of add-ons, with Swansea holding out for a deal that might eventually be worth 10m pounds.

Cesar joins QPR on four-year deal

    196019hp2.jpg

QPR have completed the signing of Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar, with the Brazilian signing a four-year deal at Loftus Road.

Manager Mark Hughes had been keen to land the 32-year-old following QPR's shaky start to the new campaign, which saw the team fall to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Swansea City on the opening day of the season, then draw 1-1 with Norwich in its second game.

Cesar has committed his future to QPR until 2016, and is likely to make his debut for the club against Chelsea after the upcoming international break.

“It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to attract a keeper of such outstanding ability to the club,” the QPR boss told the club's official website“When the opportunity to sign a player of his quality presents itself, you have to act quickly and we’ve managed to get the deal done.“It was always my intention to bring two goalkeepers to the club this summer and now we’ve got fantastic competition in that department."

Cesar insisted the vision presented to him by both Hughes and club owner Tony Fernandes ensured he had no concerns about joining the west London outfit.“I’m so happy and excited to be here," Cesar said.

“The ambition of this club was presented to me by the chairman and the coach and I couldn’t have been more impressed.“The desire to achieve things at this club is clear for everyone to see and I wanted to be part of that. I have come here to compete for the shirt and give my all.”

He continued: “The English Premier League is the best division in the world.“Everyone wants to play here and I am no different. Now I just want to give my all to the club and show the fans what I am capable of."

Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona (Agg: 4-4): Madrid wins on away goals

    206441hp2.jpg

Real Madrid has claimed the 2012 Supercopa after a gripping 2-1 second-leg victory over Barcelona in their Santiago Bernabeu clash on Wednesday.

Los Blancos triumphed on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate, but it should have been a much wider margin after a shambolic defensive start from Tito Vilanova's men.

A missed clearance from Javier Mascherano saw Gonzalo Higuain gifted the opener, and an outrageous move from Cristiano Ronaldo on Gerard Pique put him in position to make it 2-0 after 19 minutes.

Adriano's red card just before half an hour seemed to signal the the end of Barca's hopes, but Lionel Messi dragged the club back to its feet with a fantastic free kick on the stroke of halftime.

The second half was far more tense as a much-improved Barca had chances to score again, but there was no way back for the visitors as Madrid hung on to claim the first trophy in Spain this season.

Pepe returned from a concussion to start alongside Sergio Ramos in defense, but there was no place for new signing Luka Modric, who began the game on the bench.

An injury to Dani Alves during the warmup forced Tito Vilanova to draft Jordi Alba in at left back, with Adriano shifting to the opposite flank. Carles Puyol was another notable absentee after fracturing a cheekbone in the 2-1 win over Osasuna on the weekend.

The Barcelona captain may have well had a thing or two to say after a dreadful defensive opening that saw Madrid storm into a two goal lead after 20 minutes.

Mascherano had already allowed Higuain to slip past him for an early one-on-one that was saved by Victor Valdes, and the Argentine gifted his compatriot an even greater chance in the 11th minute, when his missed attempt at a clearance allowed the striker to steal in and slot home the opener.

It went from bad to worse for Barca eight minutes later, as Madrid struck again after pouncing on another lapse at the back. Pique was left bamboozled by a heel flick from Ronaldo, who advanced on goal and had time to steady himself before blasting in via the leg of Valdes.Valdes was called into action once more to deny Higuain, who was again able to get behind the defense, while Madrid saw a third goal questionably disallowed for an infraction after Pepe nodded in a free kick.

The visiting side was all at sea, and the chances seemed to be virtually extinguished just before the half hour mark when Adriano was shown a straight red card for pulling down Ronaldo on a clear break towards goal for the Portuguese.

Vilanova was forced to throw on Martin Montoya for Sanchez in a bid to shore up his defense as Madrid continued to dominate. Sami Khedira’s volley was thwarted from point blank range by Valdes, before a last ditch challenge from Mascherano halted Higuain as he bore down on goal.

However, there were a few signs of life from Barca as the first half drew to a close. Montaya came within inches of connecting with Andres Iniesta’s low cross, and then, in stoppage time, a moment of magic from Messi gave the visitors a fighting chance.

The Argentine took charge of a free kick after Xavi was felled 30 yards from goal, and bent a breathtaking effort around the wall, past the outstretched arm of Iker Casillas and into the back of the net.

Still, Madrid nearly responded in the dying embers of the first half. Ronaldo’s 35-yard drive bounced inches wide, and Higuain also narrowly missed, after cutting onto his left foot deep inside the area.Barca headed into the break knowing that it still had a lot of work to do, and looked to wrest control from the home side as the second half unfolded.

Madrid seemed content to sit back and protect the advantage, which allowed the Blaugrana the chance to dictate proceedings with their famed tiki-taka football.

Their improved endeavor was almost rewarded on the hour mark, after a searching ball from the back by Mascherano was taken in stride brilliantly by Pedro, who saw his shot met by an equally fantastic save from Casillas. The Spanish forward had another opening moments later after sneaking in on the right, but Casillas was again alert to stop him from poking home at the near post.

Madrid was far from ruthless, but still harbored a significant threat on the break. Khedira nearly scored a third after beating multiple defenders en-route to goal, but Valdes was able to block strongly.

Alba was thwarted at the last by a great challenge from Ramos, before Higuain was allowed through on goal for the umpteenth time, but could not finish the chance as his effort bounced off the base of the post.

Late openings appeared for both sides, but no more goals were forthcoming as Madrid held on to claim the Supercopa, and set the pace for what is sure to be a enthralling season in Spain.
