Chelsea 1-4 Atletico Madrid: Stunning Falcao hat-trick wins European Super Cup

    206922hp2.jpg

Radamel Falcao scored a sensational first-half hat-trick as Atletico Madrid put European champions Chelsea to the sword to lift the European Super Cup with a 4-1 win in Monaco.

The Colombian scored took his tally to six goals in two games as Los Rojiblancos won the trophy for the second time in three years, with Miranda adding a fourth in the second half before Gary Cahill hit a late consolation.

Chelsea named their strongest possible XI for the showpiece final, recalling Frank Lampard to the midfield in place of Raul Meireles as Fernando Torres started against his boyhood club.

On-loan keeper Thibault Courtois started for Atletico against his parent club, while Falcao led the attacking line on the back of his hat-trick in his side's last outing against Athletic Bilbao.

It was Falcao who looked the most dangerous from the off as Atletico came flying out of the blocks. The striker crashed an effort off the crossbar following a Felipe Luis cross just moments into the match and then David Luiz was fortunate not to give away a penalty as Chelsea’s defence struggled.

Atletico continued to open the match in furious fashion and, with just six minutes on the clock, that man Falcao broke the deadlock. The Colombian was played in behind the Blues back line and he cleverly dinked the ball left-footed over the onrushing Petr Cech, with Luiz unable to hook the ball off the line before it nestled into the net.

Chelsea tried to respond and Eden Hazard rifled a shot just over the bar, but just 10 minutes later, Falcao doubled Atleti’s advantage in sumptuous style, cutting inside Ashley Cole before curling a left-foot shot into the top corner past the despairing grasp of Cech.

The Blues were shell-shocked by the Europa League winners' start and tried to gain a degree of control on the ball, but their possession play lacked any real cutting edge and they were fortunate not to be down by three on the half-hour mark when Adrian Lopez somehow contrived to scuff Arda Turan’s cut-back off his own face before Falcao headed the rebound off the post.

The Spaniards continued to frustrate the European Champions as they pressed on the ball and denied the likes of Mata and Hazard any space to dictate play, and shortly before the break, Falcao completed a sensational hat-trick from another slick counter-attack.

The lively Turan held up the ball on the edge of the Chelsea box before sliding it through into the path of the Colombian, who took a touch to control before firing low through the legs of Cech to give the Spanish side a well-deserved three-goal advantage at the break.

Chelsea began the second half with the same strong possession play but looked a shadow of the side which breezed past Newcastle in their last game. Atletico, meanwhile, looked consistently dangerous on the counter attack, particularly in wide areas. On the hour mark, they netted a fourth.

Chelsea failed to deal with a simple free-kcik into the box and the ball bounced off Falcao to Miranda, who poked beyond Cech at the near post as Cahill tried in vain to keep it from crossing the line.

Half-time substitute Oscar came close a few minutes later with a low drive from distance, but Atletico were playing with supreme confidence and the full backing of their vociferous support, and Cech had to react smartly to keep out a Koke free-kick which almost crept in at the far post.

Munich may have felt like a distant memory for Chelsea fans but they did have something to cheer when one of the heroes of that night, Cahill, rifled in low from close-range after Atletico failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Chelsea fans suddenly had something to celebrate but they were almost further embarrassed in the closing stages, as Cech saved smartly from Felipe Luis before Luiz turned a Turan cross towards his own goal but got fortunate as it rebounded against the post and bounced to safety.

The Blues pressed late on to try and restore a smattering of pride to proceedings, but in truth, the match - and the trophy - had been won at half-time by the blistering pace of Atletico's play and the brilliance of Falcao, who received a rapturous reception from all sides of Stade Louis II as he was replaced in the dying minutes.

Manchester City completes signing of Javi Garcia from Benfica

    206145hp2.jpg

Manchester City has officially completed the signing of midfielder Javi Garcia from Benfica.

Goal.com understands the fee for the Spaniard is worth a total of 18 million pounds, an initial fee of 15.5m pounds plus an additional 2.5m pounds in potential add-ons.

The swoop for Garcia makes it a successful transfer deadline day for Roberto Mancini's side, who have also signed Scott Sinclair, Maicon, Matija Nastasic and Richard Wright.

The 25-year-old came through the ranks at Real Madrid, with whom he has had two spells, and has also played for Osasuna in La Liga.

The signing has come too late for Garcia to be considered for selection in Saturday's game at home to QPR, but he will be eligible for selection in the game away to Stoke City after the international break.

The Premier League champions are yet to release any details on the contract length for their new signing, who had to wait until just before the transfer window slammed shut for the paperwork to go through on his switch.

Garcia has been handed the No.14 shirt at the Etihad Staidum for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.

    QPR announces MBia signing

    166099hp2.jpg

QPR boss Mark Hughes has signed Marseille utility man Stephane Mbia after speculation that he was on his way for a switch deal with controversial midfielder Joey Barton

The 26-year old has arrived at Loftus Road after joining from Marseille for an undisclosed fee. The midfielder, who can also play in defense signed for the French club from Rennes in 2009 for a deal worth 10.4m pounds.Hughes was quoted previously admiring Mbia's qualities, as he hopes to fill the void that is left by the departure of Joey Barton who moves the other direction in a loan deal.

"He is another player that can play in a couple of positions. I like that flexibility in players. He is a good age, and we have paid a good price for him." Hughes said.

Mbia made 53 appearances for Marseille and will look to take that experience to the Premier League as Mark Hughes aims to make a statement for the 2012/13 Premier League campaign.

QPR has a tasking trip to the Etihad Stadium as it takes on Manchester City on September 1. The last time these two sides faced was the dramatic finale of the 2011/2012 campaign that saw City clinch the title.

Barton leaves QPR for Marseille loan move

QPR midfielder Joey Barton has joined French side Marseille on a season-long loan deal.

The 29-year-old has left London after a difficult conclusion to the 2011-12 campaign which saw him receive a 12-match ban following a red card in QPR's 3-2 defeat to champions Manchester City on the final day of the season.

Barton expressed his delight at the move on Saturday evening by tweeting: "I am now a player for L'OM. What a birthday present! Cannot wait to get going. #allezL'OM."

The tough English midfielder also had kind words for QPR chairman Tony Fernandes and co-owner Amit Bhatia: "I would also like to thankhttps://twitter.com/tonyfernandes @tonyfernandes and @Amit_Bhatia99 for making this possible. Good luck to everyone at QPR for this season.

:shocked:Real Madrid signs Chelsea midfielder Essien on season-long loan

    168697hp2.jpg

Real Madrid has completed the shock signing of Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien on a year-long loan deal.

The Ghanaian will link up with former Blues boss Jose Mourinho at Santiago Bernabeu after being made surplus to requirements under Roberto Di Matteo.

Essien's arrival in Madrid will facilitate Lassana Diarra's proposed move to Anzhi Makhachkhala before the Russian transfer deadline passes on Thursday.

The 29-year-old made only 14 appearances for the European champions last term after recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in January, consequently losing his first-team place to John Obi Mikel and Raul Meireles under Andre Villas-Boas and later Di Matteo.

Everton signs Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen

    206420hp2.jpg

Everton has clinched the signing of defender Bryan Oviedo from Danish side FC Copenhagen on a four-year deal. The versatile Costa Rican has been linked with a variety of clubs over the summer, but has agreed to move to Goodision Park for a fee believed to be in the region of 5 million pounds.Oviedo can play at left back and on the left side of midfield, and his signing will give the Toffees added depth as they look to build on last season's impressive seventh-placed finish. The 22-year-old has earned 13 international caps for Costa Rica, and has appeared in the Champions League in addition to winning a Danish league title and two Danish Cups during his time in Scandinavia.

However, despite enjoying much success in the Danish capital, Oviedo admitted that he is eager to enhance his career in the Premier League.
He told Everton's official website: "I am so very happy. This is a very good opportunity for me.

"I know a lot about Everton. I watch Everton games and Premier League games on the TV and it is a very good league."The last two or three days have been very stressful and tiring but I am so happy now. I am feeling good and right now everything is positive."The capture of Oviedo could well be David Moyes' last foray into the transfer market. The Toffees have also added Kevin Mirallas, Steven Pienaar and Steven Naismith so far this summer, but have also lost Jack Rodwell and Tim Cahill to Manchester City and New York Red Bulls respectively.

Roque Santa Cruz joins Malaga on loan from Manchester City

    99954hp2.jpg

Malaga has announced that Roque Santa Cruz has become the club's third summer signing after tying the Paraguayan striker to a one-year loan deal.

The former Blackburn target man was surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium due to the team's extreme depth in his position, so a temporary move to the La Liga club sees both outfits satisfied.

Manuel Pellegrini had previously told the press that he was very close to signing his man, but stated that "nothing is official yet."

However, both club and player have confirmed the move.

"In the last [few] weeks there was interest from Malaga. I would have the chance to play [in] the UEFA Champions League and this was the reason I accepted the transfer," he told a Paraguayan radio station.

"This is the last year of my contract at Manchester City, and in December I would [have] been able to negotiate with other teams."

"But there is now a deal between both clubs, so I traveled to Malaga for medical tests, and then I will sign my contract."

    Malaga signs Onyewu on loan

    206940hp2.jpg

Malaga has signed Oguchi Onyewu on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon with a view to a permanent transfer.

The U.S. international can play in several positions but thrives in a central defensive role and will be added to the ranks already at coach Manuel Pellegrini's disposal.

The capture of Onyewu rounds off a busy day at La Rosaleda, as South American strikers Javier Saviola and Roque Santa Cruz were brought in on deadline day to help fill the void left by Jose Rondon's departure.

Onyewu holds a Belgian passport from his time at Standard Liege, and thus does not infringe upon Malaga's non-EU allowance.

    Clint Dempsey signs with Tottenham

    206312hp2.jpg

U.S. international midfielder Clint Dempsey has finally gotten his wish and is headed out of Fulham after agreeing to a deal with Tottenham in the final hours of the window transfer window.

According to Sky Sports, the clubs had agreed on a transfer fee of 6 million pounds ($9.5 million) and Dempsey signed a three-year deal with his new team, which is coached by Andre Villas-Boas.

“I'm very excited and looking forward to the challenge,” Dempsey said on Tottenham's official website. “To play under this head coach and play for this club is a dream come true. I want to make the most of it and work as hard as I can to get onto the field and do well.

“There are a lot of great players here, I'm looking forward to training and playing with them and trying to fight for a spot in the team.”

Dempsey, who spent the last five years with Fulham following a stint in Major League Soccer, had been seeking a move to a Champions League-caliber club after scoring 23 goal in 46 games in all competitions for the Cottagers last season.

A switch to Liverpool had been long rumored but the Reds were unable to come up with an agreement with Fulham, which had filed a formal complaint against the American-owned team for making its pursuit of the 29-year-old public.

Dempsey and Fulham coach Martin Jol have had a rocky relationship since last season, according to sources, and the player was held out of Fulham's first two games of the season. He also did not travel with the team for its preseason tour in Switzerland earlier this month.

Fulham appears to have already moved on from its former star, opening the season with a 5-0 win over Norwich followed by a strong showing in a 3-2 loss against Manchester United last weekend.

Dempsey had remained silent on all transfer issues this summer after being asked to stay away from the media as he sought a new club, according to sources close to the player. But it was well-known that he wanted out of Fulham.

“A lot was said and written ahead of me leaving Fulham. It wasn’t how it was portrayed, but that’s in the past now and we move on," Dempsey said. “I want to thank the fans for everything, some of the best memories I’ve had in football and thank the chairman for giving me the opportunity to come from MLS and compete over here.

“All I can say is thank you and now I’m looking forward to the next challenge.”

Several Premier League clubs had reached out to Dempey's representatives leading to the final day of the transfer window, including Aston Villa, Liverpool, Sunderland and Arsenal. Fulham accepted Villa's bid of 7 million pounds on Friday, but Dempsey refused to sign for the club.

Dempsey moves to Tottenham on the same day the London club offloaded Mexico's Giovani dos Santos to Mallorca of the Spanish league.

Tottenham fails in deadline day move for Moutinho

    206847hp2.jpg

Tottenham's attempted move for Porto's Joao Moutinho has collapsed late on transfer deadline day.

Spurs had seen a club record 22 million pounds bid accepted by Porto for the 25-year-old on Friday but the north London outfit were unable to complete a deal with his representatives before the transfer deadline closed at 11pm.

Moutinho had been touted as the ideal replacement for Luka Modric in Tottenham's midfield after the Croatian joined Real Madrid for 33.2m pounds earlier this week.

Rafael van der Vaart followed the former Dinamo Zagreb man out of White Hart Lane on Friday, joining Hamburg for 10.3m pounds, heightening Spurs' need for a central midfielder.

Spurs bolstered their options in the middle with the signing of Mousa Dembele on Wednesday, but Moutinho will remain with the Portuguese champions despite a late push from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on the final day of the transfer window.

    Cavani signs new Napoli deal

    203997hp2.jpg

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani has ended speculation surrounding his future after signing a new contract with the Serie A club.

The Uruguay international has long been the subject of transfer speculation, with Italian champion Juventus linked with a move for the player along with Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, he has now committed his future to the Partenopei after putting pen-to-paper on an improved deal which will keep him at the San Paolo until 2017.Speaking to reporters shortly after confirmation of his new contract, Cavani revealed his decision to extend his stay with Napoli was based on both his love for the city, and belief that the side can challenge on all fronts.

"Staying in Naples is not a choice of money, although it is definitely important because [playing football] is a job, but this is also a choice of the heart," he told reporters.

"This is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the warmth of the club's support is unique and makes you feel special.

"We took all of these factors, along with my family and my agents, into account, and collectively we decided to stay in this beautiful city."Cavani scored in Napoli's 3-0 opening-day Serie A victory over Palermo last weekend, and will now be looking to further his account for the new season against Fiorentina on Sunday.

"I always go on the pitch to win, to get the most out of every match. Since my arrival in Naples, I always tried to win a trophy," he said.
