Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal: Koscielny saves point for Gunners after Lescott opener

    212915hp2.jpg

Premier League champion Manchester City was held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

The Gunners were the better side in the first half though found themselves 1-0 down at the interval after Joleon Lescott headed the home team into the lead.

City became the dominant force after the break, but conceded an 85th minute equalizer after Laurent Koscielny rifled home from just inside the box.

The result extends City and Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season, though both have now drawn three games out of their opening five Premier League fixtures.

Roberto Mancini recalled Sergio Aguero to the City starting lineup at the expense of Carlos Tevez while Koscielny made his first start of the season for the visiting side with captain Thomas Vermaelen ruled out by illness.

Though Aguero tested Vito Mannone from distance early on, it was Arsenal which enjoyed the better start to the game with Gervinho let down by a heavy touch when fed through on goal by Aaron Ramsay.

Good work by Carl Jenkinson on the right byline saw the fullback outmuscle Joleon Lescott and cut back for Lukas Podolski but the German could only sky wildly over the bar.

Gervinho lashed into the side netting as Arsenal looked to capitalize on the early domination but it was the home side which broke the deadlock, with Lescott powering home with his head after some questionable goalkeeping by Mannone from David Silva's inswinging corner.

As the first half drew to a close Mannone went close to making amends after tipping Edin Dzeko's fierce drive over the bar with City close to doubling the lead.

Mancini replaced home debutant Scott Sinclair with Jack Rodwell at the start of the second half as City went on to negate Arsenal's early momentum.

Aguero was given an abundance of time at the far post before lashing over when a ball back into the danger area may have been a more prudent option, with the Argentine also denied a penalty after a collision with Koscielny in the box.

Arsenal began to look ragged in possession in its rare forays forward as Wenger sent on Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, while Mancini replaced Dzeko with Tevez with 20 minutes to go.

A powerful Yaya Toure drive right through the heart of the Gunners midfield ended up with Aguero forcing Mannone into a near-post save before counterpart Joe Hart parried over after Santi Cazorla tested him from just outside the box.

The diminutive Spaniard swung in the subsequent corner and the ball broke to Koscielny, with the Frenchman taking a touch before lashing an equaliser into the top corner.

Vincent Kompany went close to restoring the host's lead with five minutes remaining, improvising excellently to chest down and fire in a bicycle kick from which Aguero could only guide Mannone's save agonizingly wide of the post.

Gervinho almost snatched a late winner for the Gunners though after sidestepping well the Ivorian could only fire rashly over the bar as the spoils were shared at the Etihad.

    Congratulations Manchester United!!!

Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United: Van Persie penalty downs 10-man hosts at emotional Anfield

    rafaelgoal20120923_640x360.jpg

Manchester United left Liverpool still looking for its first Premier League win of the season in an emotionally charged 2-1 triumph at Anfield.

Jonjo Shelvey’s red card with six minutes before halftime threatened to derail the attacking dominance that Brendan Rodgers’ side possessed for the first 40 minutes, but Steven Gerrard’s volley propelled them into the lead in the first minute of the second half. The visitors responded with an immediate equalizer, with right back Rafael curling a left-footed corker into the top corner from the right inside the box.

The 10 men of Liverpool continued to battle, but with 10 minutes left, Robin van Persie ended United’s recent poor form from penalties by converting a spot kick after Antonio Valencia drew a controversial call to give Sir Alex Ferguson’s side a win and leave the hosts stranded in the relegation zone.

The theme before the game was unity: the two managers conducting a joint interview, and Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez shaking hands despite their embittered history. But on the pitch and in the stands the passionate rivalry was as fierce as ever.

    robinvanpersiecelebrates20120923_576x324.jpg

Buoyed by a rousing rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in memory of the 96 football fans who died at Hillsborough 23 years ago after the club had finally been absolved of blame for the incident, Liverpool was the stronger team following kickoff.

Suarez forced Anders Lindegaard into an early save from close range, then an unmarked Gerrard made the side netting ripple with a low shot from a cleverly worked corner. The Reds’ attacking continued as United’s passing accuracy plummeted. Suarez was at the center of most moves and gave center backs Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans a torrid time. The home side suffered a setback on the 39-minute mark, though, when Shelvey was sent off for a lunging, studs-up challenge on Evans.

If any Reds supporters were worried that their team would lessen their grip on the game, those fears was temporarily dispelled when Gerrard chested down 15 yards from goal and rifled a volley home soon after halftime, cuing scenes of jubilation around Anfield.

However, Rafael showed why United should never be underestimated regardless of a poor performance, curling a shot into the top left-hand corner to level the scoring five minutes later.

Suarez, an energetic force throughout, forced a super save to Lindegaard’s right with a low effort not long after and substitute Suso fired marginally over inside the 18-yard box.

The home side’s hopes were dashed when Glen Johnson was ruled to have clattered into the back of Valencia on a United counterattack, leading to a penalty in the visitors’ favor. Having missed from the spot at Southampton earlier this season, Van Persie made no mistake in scoring United’s eventual winner by driving to the right as goalkeeper Pepe Reina got a hand on it but could not tip it wide.

At the other end, Martin Kelly was gifted a gilt-edged chance to score the Reds’ second, but his header inside the box from Johnson’s cross was headed wide by the right back.

Udinese 2-1 AC Milan: Di Natale penalty leaves Allegri on brink

    212803hp2.jpg

Udinese inflicted yet another defeat on AC Milan in Serie A, winning 2-1 thanks to Antonio Di Natale's winner after dramatic scenes in Udine saw Kevin Prince Boateng and Cristian Zapata sent off for the visitors.

Mathias Ranegie had given the hosts the lead before a stunning Stephan El Shaarawy strike levelled matters, but Zapata saw red and Di Natale converted the spot kick to leave Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri facing increasing scrutiny.

The first half looked like ending in a stalemate, until Ranegie rose highest in the Milan penalty area to nod home unchallenged and put the hosts a goal to the good.

Di Natale wasted another chance for the Fruili in the second half, while the 19-year-old El Shaarawy continued to pose the greatest danger for Allegri's side before levelling matters 10 minutes in. Following some solid play by Boateng, Giampaolo Pazzini laid the ball off to El Shaarawy, who lashed the ball home from well outside the box. It was his his third goal in Serie A and, coincidentally, his third against the Zebrette.

Despite the goal, Milan was unable to gain control of the match as Udinese continued to look the more comfortable of the teams. Just after the hour mark, drama ensued when Zapata, making a return to his former club, was sent off for a second bookable offense, conceding a penalty in the process and one that Di Natale buried.

Matters soon worsened for Allegri and his under-performing side when Boateng, only on as a second half substitute, received his marching orders following a second yellow card.

Down to nine men, Milan was left with a mountain to club and despite the need to at least try and steal a point, it was the home side that looked like extending their lead as Allegri's men struggled with the numerical disadvantage. Udinese was able to comfortably see out the match, and for Milan, its crisis continues, and Allegri's position at the club will now be seriously called into question.

Newcastle boss Pardew: No problem with Ba after apology

    211265hp2.jpg

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has revealed that his relationship with striker Demba Ba is fine following an apology from the player's camp.

There had been suggestions from his agent that Ba was at odds with Pardew and might seek a move away from the club after being left out of the Magpies' starting XI. The Senegal international was named among the substitutes when Newcastle played Everton last Monday, but he was called into action and scored both his team's goals in a 2-2 draw.

Subsequently Ba's agent said the forward "could not understand the management" and might have to consider other options if he was not reinstated in the team. But Pardew has told reporters that he and Ba have cleared the air and that there is no problem between them.

"We are intelligent about the way we do things here," Pardew said. "I know words have been said by Demba's camp, but we've had an apology for that. He hadn't been playing well, but he came on at Everton and showed what a great player he is."

Pardew is fully focused on Sunday's visit of Norwich City in a fixture that will see Chris Hughton return to Tyneside for the first time since he was sacked by the Magpies in December, 2010.

The current Newcastle boss is targeting three points as he looks to consolidate his team's solid start to the season - but he has warned that taking on the Canaries will not be an easy challenge.

"Chris did a fabulous job here and will be well received," Pardew told Newcastle's official website. "[Norwich] have got some great pros and we will have to take care of their good players - guys like [Anthony] Pilkington and [Grant] Holt. The organization of Norwich is very strong and I think they will do okay this year. But we are at home and we need to win."

Hughton was appointed as Norwich manager in June following the departure of Paul Lambert, who moved to Aston Villa a few days earlier. Norwich's attacking style of play under Hughton has been rewarded with a point against Tottenham at White Hart Lane - and has not been ignored by Pardew.

"Chris has been quite brave and played two strikers in most of their games, unlike a lot of the Premier League sides," Pardew said. "I think he will get his reward for that, but hopefully not against us."

Mourinho: Rodgers 'can't make miracles' at Liverpool

    207442hp2.jpg

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho believes new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers faces an unenviable task in turning Liverpool into Premier League contenders, suggesting that the Northern Irishman "can't make miracles."

After two draws and two defeats in their opening four games, Liverpool are already 11 points behind league leaders Chelsea and welcome last season's runners-up, Manchester United, to Anfield on Sunday. Mourinho has stated that the Reds, in his view, are "not even close" to possessing a squad capable of competing at the top end of the table.

"I think Brendan, he can't be champion with that team," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "He can't make miracles with that team. It's not an easy job. Liverpool expectations are very high. The reality is that Liverpool, at this moment, they're not the best team in the Premiership. Not even close. The squad is not at that point."

The Portuguese coach, who won back-to-back Premier League titles with Chelsea in 2005 and 2006, does think, however, that Rodgers can build a side capable of challenging if he is given time to invest in new players.

"Other squads are investing much more than Liverpool are doing," Mourinho said. "So I hope [Rodgers] has time to build, because if you don't have the top players in your hands, it takes more time to build. I think he deserves that, and I think, with time, he can do the job for them."
Mourinho feels Manchester City has the squad to replicate last season's title triumph, but admitted that rivals Manchester United will push them all the way.

"I believe Man City are the champions and have the squad to do it, no doubt," he said. "It's an incredible squad that can make easy rotations, because they have such a strong squad. Now they are the champions so that will also play a role.

"Man United are Man United. I don't think Sir Alex [Ferguson] accepts himself not to win the Premiership for two consecutive years, because he's strong and a winner, so he'll fight hard for that. Man United are not signing many players but [Robin] Van Persie means a lot in the Premiership to make the difference."

André Villas-Boas says Brad Friedel is still Tottenham's first choice

Brad Friedel is still the first choice goalkeeper for Tottenham, according to his manager.

The 41-year-old's place in the team has been in question since the club signed French star Hugo Lloris, but Friedel put in another strong showing for Spurs in a 2-1 win over QPR on Sunday, and André Villas-Boas made it clear after the match that he would stick with the American for the time being.

"We have made Hugo alert that whenever Brad has a bad game it won’t produce a change. These things have to be taken very carefully," Villas-Boas said. "We don't doubt Hugo's dimension and talent, but it’s not in our mind at the moment. We are paying respect to a player who is performing very well. At the right time, if needed or not, we will think about it. Hugo is an extremely good professional. He wants to come back into the team, but he is competing with Brad for that position, and he will certainly have his chances very soon."

The backing from his manager will be a welcome relief to Friedel, who recently responded publicly, and angrily, to comments made by Fabien Barthez about him starting in front of Lloris.

USA midfielder Bradley returns to Roma training

    204267hp2.jpg

Michael Bradley is back in full training with AS Roma, the Serie A club announced on its official website Monday. The United States international was out for almost a month with a thigh injury.

Bradley picked up the knock during a training session a couple of days after a successful debut with the club. In his first official match following his move from Chievo Verona over the summer, Bradley started and played the full 90 minutes, contributing a late game-tying assist in Roma's 2-2 draw with Catania on Aug. 26.

The injury caused Bradley, a mainstay in Jurgen Klinsmann's starting lineup, to miss out on the USA's two World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica earlier this month. He also missed Roma's last two matches, but he should be in contention to return to game action on Wednesday, when Roma hosts Sampdoria.

With almost three weeks until the USA's next set of World Cup qualifiers, Bradley has ample time to work his way back to full fitness ahead of crucial matches against Antigua and Barbuda and Guatemala on Oct. 12 and 16, respectively.

Ganso: It's a dream to join Sao Paulo

    213022hp2.jpg

Brazilian star Paulo Henrique Ganso has praised Sao Paulo's staff and great history as he expressed his joy at being part of the renowned Brazilian team.

Speaking at his first official press conference, the former Santos star drew a record crowd to the Morumbi as he was unveiled to fans, saying the metropolitan club has been very open and welcoming.

"My feelings are the best possible, I'm very happy," Ganso told reporters. "The way I've been welcomed by the players, the staff and Sao Paulo's employees was great. This club seems the right place for me to show my skills and personality.

"It's a dream for every player to join a huge club like Sao Paulo. I'm a devout Sao Paulo fan now, and I'm looking forward to repay all this reception on the pitch."

The 22-year-old is still recovering from a muscle injury to his left thigh suffered from during a match against New Zealand in the Olympics this past summer. The Brazilian playmaker does not know when he will make his debut for his new team, but said that he wants to take his time to ensure a full recovery.

"I still can't say when [my debut] is going to be. I still have to regain 100 percent of my fitness to be back, and I want to be secure about it," he said. "I'll do my best to be back on top form, to play the game as I'm used to and be able to represent this great club as it should."

Mannone: Arsenal showed character to come back against Manchester City

Vito Mannone has praised his Arsenal teammates for their determination after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Despite dominating for large parts of the first half the Gunners found themselves a goal down when Joleon Lescott headed past the Italian, however Laurent Koscielny fired home late on to salvage a hard-fought point.

The keeper insisted the team must be mentally strong when playing the top sides in the league, something he hailed his team for doing against Roberto Mancini's men.

"You need to show your character and show that you are ready for the big games," he told the club's official website.

"Every team is difficult because there is not such a difference between sides [in the Premier League]. You need to perform well every week and get as many points as you can. We did all we could do to put pressure on them. It shows great character to come back, especially against the champions."

The 24-year-old, who is enjoying a run in the first team after Wojciech Szczesny's injury problems, has been in good form this season but was partially at fault for City's goal when he failed to deal with David Silva's corner.

Mannone was disappointed with his error but suggested that he made up for it with some good saves later on, namely when denying Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero, while stating he is pleased to have helped secure the draw.

"I was not happy with the goal obviously but I came back stronger with some saves," he said. "The team performed really well and everyone gave everything to come back and get a point. Every save that can help the team, I am really happy with."

FA puts Wembley forward as potential Euro 2020 final host

    202247hp2.jpg

David Bernstein has indicated the FA will "push" to have Wembley Stadium considered as the host for the semifinals and final of Euro 2020 if it is held across Europe.

Michel Platini, the UEFA president, has previously suggested the tournament could be staged in multiple different countries on the continent in eight years' time, with further discussions set to take place in December.

FA chairman Bernstein has suggested Wembley may be put forward as a venue should the plan come to fruition.

"Clearly Wembley is incredibly highly thought of by UEFA and it is something we will probably push for," Bernstein said at a media briefing. "UEFA want to hold the semifinals and the final on the same ground, or in the same city and I think we would be on their shortlist - but there would be some strong competition."

England would be keen to stage Euro 2020, though Turkey remains the favorite if it is not awarded the Olympic Games during the same summer.

"One of the major factors is whether Turkey get the Olympic Games or not," Bernstein added. "If Turkey do not get the Olympic Games then I think they are in a pretty good position to stage the Euros.

"If we believed there was a real opportunity of having the tournament here of course we would look at it.

Of course there would be an intent, the public want it and we'd want it and it would be wonderful to have it here. If Michel Platini's current views prevail and it becomes a pan-European competition, then the focus needs to be on the semifinals and final."

The FA was unsuccessful in its bid to host the 2018 World Cup, and while Bernstein stated he would not wish to be drawn into a similar bidding process,

"We would not want to be involved in a World Cup-style bidding process," he said. "We do not want to spend a lot of money on something that fell flat."

Nesta: Allegri and Inzaghi acted like two children

    211349hp2.jpg

Alessandro Nesta has hit out at former teammate Filippo Inzaghi and AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, accusing them both of acting like children after seeing reports of a recent bust-up at the team's training grounds.

Allegri reportedly turned up at the Vismara Centre, which is where the club’s youth teams play, to watch training. Inzaghi, the current manager of Milan’s youth team, allegedly accused his former boss of not taking his job seriously, which resulted in a heated argument between the two.

The Montreal Impact defender believes that attempts to cover up any rift are failing, and he thinks the two have acted in a childish manner.

"Their argument? It's the behavior of children," the 36-year-old told reporters. "If it went as I read, it was childish from both of them."

Nesta's comments are surprising considering that just last week, he came to the defense of the under-pressure coach.

"As for Allegri, the criticism is unfair. I think fans are smart enough to realize that the team is new and needs time to gel, but also selling two key players like Ibra and Silva will hurt the team," he told Goal.com's Alex Labidou.

The center back appeared less optimistic when discussing the Rossoneri's current struggles that have seen them manage just one win in their first five games.

"It is not the first time the team has been in trouble, but in the past we were able to finish the season well. Allegri is being doubted, but I do not understand who could be the alternative."

Finally, Nesta was full of praise for current Roma boss Zdenek Zeman: "He is a great coach, every player should expect to be coached by him because he's the best to teach football."

Hodgson 'reluctantly accepts' John Terry's England retirement

England manager Roy Hodgson has expressed his disappointment at John Terry's international retirement but will accept his former skipper's decision to stand down.

The Chelsea captain quit the national side on Sunday night ahead of his Football Association hearing into alleged racial abuse of QPR defender Anton Ferdinand last October, claiming his position in the national side had become "untenable".

The 65-year-old wished the defender well in his future at Stamford Bridge and revealed that Terry had broken the news to him personally.

"I'd like to thank John Terry for his commitment to the England team since I became manager," a statement from Hodgson read. "I am of course disappointed to lose a player of John's international experience and exceptional ability."

He added, "I have enjoyed a good relationship with John during my time as England manager and I reluctantly accept his decision. I can also confirm that he had the courtesy to call me prior to announcing his retirement from the England team.

"I'd like to wish John well for the future with Chelsea."

A statement from the FA also echoed Hodgson's sentiments, with Terry having captained the Three Lions twice in his career, with both spells ending in controversial circumstances.

The statement said: "Following his announcement that he is retiring from the England team, The FA would like to thank John Terry for all of his efforts with the national team over the past decade.

"During his 78 appearances John has always given his full commitment to the team."

Hulk and Witsel are not Messi or Ronaldo, says unhappy Denisov

    197724hp2.jpg

Russia captain Igor Denisov has voiced his dismay with Zenit St Petersburg's policy to pay foreign stars such as Hulk and Axel Witsel higher wages than their Russian players.

The 28-year-old midfielder asked for a pay increase after the capture of the Brazil and Belgium internationals, but was demoted to the reserves rather than get the improved deal he was after, much to Denisov's dismay.

"Why would foreigners earn three times more than the best players in the team? That's why I asked for a pay rise. But I was axed by the coach instead," Denisov stated to Sport Express.

"If Hulk and Witsel were at the same level as Messi and Ronaldo it would be fine, but they are not. So why do we have this imbalance in wages then? It's not about money, it's about respect. I couldn't even sleep well a few nights in a row waiting for the club's decision."

Denisov then went on to stress that there's no truth in the reports suggesting that the Zenit squad is deliberately making life difficult for the new players.

"Why do people say we don't pass the ball to Hulk too often? We do. We didn't give a warm welcome to him upon his arrival? We did," He said. "But it's hard to communicate with him and Witsel through interpreters. They are supposed to try talking to us themselves."

Zenit has won only one out of its last six games.

Jordan Ayew: Ibrahimovic is my idol

    156621hp2.jpg

Marseille youngster Jordan Ayew is eagerly anticipating the Ligue 1 encounter against Paris Saint-Germain on October 7, and is looking forward to locking horns with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in particular.

The Ghana international has admitted that les Parisiens have been in impressive form in recent weeks, but believes that OM could spring a surprise with a bit of luck.

"PSG are an impressive team. There's no reason to deny that as it's the simple truth," Ayew was quoted as saying by RMC.

Ayew added, "Ibrahimovic in particular will be a tough opponent. He's my idol.

"We will see how it pans out in two weeks time. It will definitely not be an easy game, but anything can happen in football."

Marseille currently sits top of Ligue 1 with 18 points from six games, whereas PSG is third.

Villas-Boas: Credit must go to players for Tottenham comeback

Andre Villas-Boas lauded his squad’s resolve after a strong second-half showing saw Tottenham come from a goal down to claim all three points against QPR.

Bobby Zamora had given Mark Hughes’ charges a deserved first-half lead, but two goals in as many second-half minutes saw the game turned on its head, as an Alejandro Faurlin own goal and Jermain Defoe’s fourth goal in five games hit back.

"[It was a] good, important win for the players who put all the effort in. All credit to them," Villas-Boas told reporters. "We believed and the players showed great commitment. We pushed them further forward at halftime and closed the gaps. The players showed great desire and commitment today to win for the fans. All credit to them."

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale echoed his manager's sentiments and highlighted the importance of picking up the team's first win in front of the home fans this season.

"[It is a] massive win," Bale added. "Vital to get [our] first home win for us and the fans. We have quick players on the counterattack. That's the kind of team we can be."

Meanwhile, defender Jan Vertonghen believes that his team is growing in confidence after a week of positive results.

"[This has been a] good week," the summer arrival added. "We deserved to win against Lazio, [and we] beat Reading and [QPR] today. We are feeling confident."

England defender John Terry retires from international action

Chelsea captain John Terry has retired from international soccer with England, with immediate effect, stating that the FA has made his position in the team "untenable".

The 31-year-old defender is set to begin a personal hearing on Monday to deny that he used "abusive and/or insulting words and/or behavior" against Anton Ferdinand in the match against QPR last October. Terry has been cleared of a charge in a court of law, but faces the FA's panel and has decided to curtail his international career.

"I feel the FA have made my position with the national team untenable," Terry said in a statement. "Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honor. I have always given my all and it breaks my heart to make this decision. I wish Roy and the team every success for the future.

"I would like to thank the England managers who have selected me for my 78 caps. I have had great pleasure in sharing that honor with all the players that I've played with. I would like to thank them, the fans and my family for their support and encouragement during my international career."

Terry made 78 appearances for the national team since making his debut in 2003 against Serbia and Montenegro, and first captained the side in a World Cup qualifier against Poland.

The Chelsea captain will still play for the Blues in club soccer.

He added: "I now look forward to playing for Chelsea FC, and challenging for domestic and European honors, and I want to thank the fans and the club for their continued support."
