Manchester City announces huge losses for second year running

    227896hp2.jpg

Manchester City have announced huge losses for the second year in a row, with the club losing 120 million euros during the last financial period.

City reported turnover for the same period of 283m euros, the highest in the club's history and a rise from 184m euros the previous year, but still operated at a significant overall loss.

The club’s inability to progress from the Champions League group stage is believed to have had a huge impact on their turnover. However, the figures represent a marked improvement from the season before, when City lost a total of 243m euros.

Meanwhile, the club posted marginal increases in gate and TV revenue, and almost doubled its commercial revenue from 80m to 148m euros. Moreover, it is believed that around 98m euros of the losses originates from contracts that predate 2010, from which City expect to get some kind of relief.

The overall figures have allowed the Premier League champions to remain confident in their ability to meet UEFA's Financial Fair Play guidelines as 18.4m euros of their losses have come from infrastructure and youth development costs.

The club’s annual statement for the year ending May 31, 2012, said: "The capital base of the club has also been strengthened through the issuing of 207m euros in new equity during the year, avoiding debt-based funding and continuing to ensure that the club is virtually debt free.”

Chief executive Ferran Soriano also said: "What I have found is a club on the verge of a historic transformation, reinforced by a genuine commitment to doing things well.

"It is a club with a rich history and the potential for an even brighter future."

This is what i saw in BBC

Manchester City has revealed that its financial losses for 2011-12 have halved from a year earlier.

The Premier League champions announced a pre-tax loss of £93.4m, down from £189.6m in 2010-11.:)

Revenues increased 51% to £231.1m, with the club's first appearance in the Uefa Champions League contributing more than £22m in new revenue.
The club's sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways helped commercial partnership revenue double from £48.5m to £97m.

City's operating loss also improved from a record £194.9m to £104.1m.

QPR 2-1 Fulham: Taarabt double gifts Redknapp first Hoops victory

    239559hp2.jpg

Adel Taarabt was the star of the show as QPR finally ended their search for a Premier League win, beating a tepid Fulham side 2-1 at Loftus Road on Saturday.

Taarabt struck twice in the second half for Harry Redknapp’s men before a late Mladen Petric strike forced a nervy climax.

Before the game, Redknapp suggested that two wins would make QPR’s season a "different game." Well, this was the first – and QPR’s only one in 17 attempts this season.

Jol’s men headed into proceedings looking to achieve back-to-back league wins for the first time since September, but seemed haunted early on by the knowledge they had won just once on the road this season as QPR dominated early on.

Taarabt – who has clearly been awarded plenty of freedom by Redknapp – almost presented the Hoops an immediate lead after the Moroccan played Djibril Cisse through on goal with a sublime through ball, but the Frenchman wasted the chance.

The Frenchman’s profligacy was clear for all to see, but it was astonishingly surpassed shortly afterwards when Jamie Mackie missed a sitter of his own.

A dreadful Jon Arne Riise back pass left Mackie through on goal, but the 25-year-old sent his shot wide from inside the box when it appeared easier to score.

All the while, however, Fulham offered no threat in return; Dimitar Berbatov sat surprisingly deep and the Cottagers midfield looked happy enough to simply retain the ball.

But Taarabt looked determined to snatch the ball back at every opportunity, with every one of his runs finding space, every pass penetrating the Cottagers back line and every shot getting closer to finding the net.

And, after a goalless first half, the mercurial 23-year-old made the vital breakthrough as he found the ball in space and drove down the middle to fire from range on 52 minutes.

The ensuing shot took a fortunate deflection off Fulham skipper Brede Hangeland and found its way into the back of the net.

And 20 minutes later, Taarabt struck again. Hangeland, who must have been sick of the sight of the Moroccan by full time, was robbed of the ball before the 23-year-old sent another finish low past Schwarzer.

A brilliant left-footed strike from Petric late on set up a frantic finish for the Hoops, but this was the Taarabt show. And, in the end, there was nothing Fulham could do to stop it.

Stoke 1-1 Everton: Points dropped in Tim Howard's 200th consecutive appearance

    239535hp2.jpg

STOKE-ON-TRENT, England -- Tim Howard made his 200th consecutive appearance in the English Premier League but both the goalkeeper and Everton will regret giving away a 1-0 lead to Stoke.

Stoke extended its unbeaten home record this season with a hard fought 1-1 draw with the high-flying Toffees.

The hosts went behind in the first half but showed great resolve to level things up early in the second half to claim a point. Both sides wasted late chances but in truth a draw was very much a fair result.

An own goal from Ryan Shawcross broke the deadlock just before halftime, the defender flicking a Steven Pienaar cross beyond Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal to give the visitors the lead. The Potters were level seven minutes into the second half as Kenwyne Jones rose to meet a Shawcross ball and head beyond Tim Howard in the Everton goal.

Stoke welcomed back Charlie Adam after his one game suspension with the Scot replacing Dean Whitehead in the center of midfield, and boss Tony Pulis opted for Andy Wilkinson to fill in at the back for the suspended Ryan Shotton. A hamstring injury to Kevin Miralles meant that Everton boss David Moyes had to make one change to the side that beat Tottenham, Steven Naismith the man chosen to fill the Belgian’s boots.

In a competitive first half both sides had half chances to open the scoring but they lacked the accuracy to test either keeper. Darron Gibson and Seamus Coleman created a great chance for Nikica Jelavic in the tenth minute but his low shot from inside the penalty was well blocked by Ryan Shawcross.

The deadlock was broken in the 36th minute with a wonderful header from a Shawcross but unfortunately for the Stoke skipper it was into his own goal. Neat build up play from the visitors down the left created a chance for Steven Pienaar to cross and as Shawcross attempted to clear the cross his flicked header flew over Asmir Begovic's dive and into the top corner.

Seven minutes into the second half the hosts were level after a great header from Jones punished bad play from both Jagielka and Howard. Shawcross delivered a lovely ball from the half way line for Jones to attack, he rose above Jagielka and headed towards goal. It appeared Howard would easily save it but he got his bearings all wrong and allowed the ball to squeeze between himself and the post.

The game then had its most controversial moment as a Marouane Fellaini headbutt on Shawcross went unpunished by referee Mark Halsey. The two men were jostling for position inside the Stoke box waiting for an Everton corner when the Belgian turned and headbutted the Stoke captain but he escaped any punishment.

The introduction of Cameron Jerome and Peter Crouch gave Stoke more impetus in the closing moments of the game but Howard did well to save from both men from dangerous situations.

Norwich 2-1 Wigan: Hoolahan winner sends hosts above Arsenal

    239553hp2.jpg

Norwich looked mostly comfortable throughout as it beat Wigan 2-1 at Carrow Road during an attacking game on Saturday.

The hosts took the lead through midfielder Anthony Pilkington in the 15th minute after good work by Wes Hoolahan. The midfielder tackled Emmerson Boyce on the edge of his own half and played to Pilkington, whose shot flew past Ali Al-Habsi.

The visitors equalized early in the second half thanks to a good strike by substitute Shaun Maloney before Hoolahan restored the Canaries' lead with a header from a Pilkington cross.

The game started with a lively tempo as both sides looked to break the deadlock and it was the hosts who broke through after tenacious work by Hoolahan as he dispossessed Boyce to slide in Pilkington. The former Huddersfield man's ferocious left-foot strike flew past Al-Habsi in the Wigan goal.

The home side should have doubled the lead more than once as the half went on, as first Pilkington shot wide from two yards out after good work by Robert Snodgrass, then Snodgrass himself missed from the same distance as he got his head on the end of a Garrido cross, only for Al-Habsi to make a good save.

It looked as though Norwich’s dominance would continue after the break as Grant Holt forced a good save from Al-Habsi from the kick-off. However, Wigan responded well and halftime substitute Shaun Maloney scored after he unleashed a powerful shot from 20 yards after a fine run by Kone down the left.

The visitors looked like a different side in the second half as they started to control the game just like Norwich did in the first. The home side came back on the hour mark, however, and Holt had a good opportunity as he was unopposed in the box but his volley went wide.

And soon after the home side restored its lead after great work down the left by Pilkington, turning Boyce inside and out, then crossing for Hoolahan to head home.

The third looked to be on the way for Norwich as first Bradley Johnson, then Pilkington were both denied by great saves by Al-Habsi, but the Canaries held on to move above Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Newcastle 1-3 Manchester City: Yaya Toure seals victory to quell Toon fightback
    237801hp2.jpg

Manchester City boosted their title credentials with a somewhat fortunate 3-1 victory over a struggling Newcastle side at St James’ Park.

Sergio Aguero, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure led the way for the champions, while Demba Ba scored for the losing hosts.

After dominating the early stages of the match, the Magpies’ defense capitulated for the rest of the first half as City’s attacking players came to life. And the visitors eventually took the lead after some clever play between Toure and Samir Nasri left Aguero with a tap-in.

The champions found a second courtesy of a Garcia header, but Alan Pardew’s men fought hard in the second period, and soon clawed one back through a Demba Ba header. The hosts pushed for an equalizer, but Toure sealed three points for the visitors with a goal against the run of play.

Pardew was forced to change shape from the side that faced Fulham last weekend, as James Perch stepped in for the injured Hatem Ben Arfa allowing Papiss Cisse to revert to a more familiar role partnering Demba Ba in attack.

The visitors made three changes from the Manchester derby, with Kolo Toure, Garcia and Carlos Tevez all coming into the side and Mario Balotelli – who had a poor game against Manchester United last time out – not even named in the squad.
Newcastle looked likeliest to take the lead early on, with Cisse forcing Joe Hart into a fantastic save in the opening minutes of the match after a Danny Simpson cross found the Senegal international with space 12 yards from goal.

But it was the champions who took the lead, after a fantastic pass from Yaya Toure left Nasri one-on-one with Tim Krul. The Frenchman allowed the keeper to rush out of his goal before squaring the ball to Aguero, who tapped in to an open net.

A combination of fine play from City’s attacking players and poor defending from the Magpies saw Roberto Mancini’s men threaten to double their lead on numerous occasions. Two chances fell to Tevez, whilst Nasri struck the post and Aguero had an effort blocked on the line by Mike Williamson.

The visitors were eventually gifted a second, as a David Silva corner was met with a powerful header by Garcia. Santon was well-positioned on the post, but a lapse in concentration when trying to hook clear saw the Italian kicking at thin air, allowing the ball to roll under his foot and into the net.

Newcastle started the second half much like the first, putting City under pressure from the off. And the club was soon rewarded for their efforts, as a poorly-cleared corner was flicked back in to the penalty area by Fabricio Coloccini. Aguero was playing everybody onside, and Ba – in acres of space – nodded the ball passed an onrushing Hart.

But it was the visitors who had the last laugh largely against the run of play, as Pablo Zabaleta dribbled into the box before finding Yaya Toure, and the Ivorian slotted the ball home through a sea of players to seal all three points for the Premier League champions.

Liverpool 1-3 Aston Villa: Ruthless Benteke and Weimann end frustrated hosts' unbeaten run

    239540hp2.jpg

Liverpool was left to rue missed chances after a Christian Benteke-inspired Aston Villa counterattacked its way to a 3-1 victory at Anfield.

After the home side had wasted a series of goalscoring opportunities, Benteke found the bottom corner from outside the box to hand Paul Lambert's men the lead.

A wonderful piece of skill from the front man then allowed Andreas Weimann to sweep home from 10 yards, before Benteke parted the Liverpool defense to add a third shortly after halftime.

Steven Gerrard got a touch to Glen Johnson's low shot to finally break Villa's resistance in the final minutes, but it was too little, too late for the profligate Reds.

Benteke lead the line for a youthful Villa team that lined up in a 5-3-2 formation. Of the starting XI, only three players were above the age of 23 in the absence of the likes of Darren Bent, Ron Vlaar, and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, recalled Luis Suarez to the Liverpool team following his one-match suspension. Jonjo Shelvey consequently switched to the left flank, with Jose Enrique sidelined by a hamstring injury.

At first, the trip to Anfield looked as if it might be too much for the young Villans. Their back five sat deep in their own half and invited pressure which Liverpool should have turned into a lead.

Suarez, as is usually the case, was at the center of the best and worst of the Reds' attacking play. The Uruguayan failed to pick out either Steven Gerrard or Raheem Sterling at the end of a three-on-one break but then nearly made amends by robbing the ball off Chris Herd. Jonjo Shelvey was set to pull the trigger when Nathan Baker arrived with a brilliant sliding tackle.

Villa, though, now has a match-winning striker of their own. Its offensive threat had been minimal before Benteke nonchalantly pushed the ball out of his feet before rifling a low shot inside Pepe Reina's right post from 25 yards.

The Belgian then turned provider to double the lead and leave the Liverpool supporters in a halftime state of shock. Racing on to a pass from Weimann, Benteke returned the ball to the center of the box with a sublime back-heel to allow the Austrian to stroke home.

Benteke's rampage was only stalled by the interval. Minutes after the break, after substitute Joe Cole had been dispossessed in midfield, the 22-year-old simply marched past Martin Skrtel and into the Liverpool box before slotting past a helpless Reina.

Villa's defending was last-ditch throughout, but it was effective. Liverpool found the penalty area crowded with yellow shirts every time they entered it and Guzan continued to vindicate Lambert's decision to leave Shay Given on the bench.

Eventually, the Villa wall was breached. Johnson cut in from right back and swatted a left-footed shot across goal which Gerrard deflected past Guzan. The goal did little to improve the mood at Anfield, though, as Liverpool's ever-improving form was stopped in its tracks.

    Congratulations Manchester United!!!

:love:Manchester United 3-1 Sunderland: Rooney and Van Persie restore six-point gap over City

    239544hp2.jpg

Manchester United extended its lead at the top of the Premier League with a convincing win over Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

Robin van Persie's measured finish started the rout and Tom Cleverley's superbly guided strike gave the Red Devils a 2-0 halftime lead, before Wayne Rooney added a third from close range on the hour.

Martin O'Neill arrived as the only manager to claim a Premier League victory with two separate clubs at Old Trafford but it quickly became apparent that he would not be adding a third club to that list as his team was overpowered and outmaneuvered.

A quickfire opening saw Ashley Young and Patrice Evra waste promising chances, before Van Persie gave Sir Alex Ferguson's team the lead with an expertly guided shot following impressive work from Young on the left wing.

His determination to wriggle past the dismal Carlos Cuellar allowed him to clip a low cross into the six-yard box that John O'Shea failed to clear. The loose ball fell to the Dutchman, who accepted the invitation to sidefoot the ball into the top corner for his 11th league goal of the season.

Moments later, after Simon Mignolet palmed Van Persie's goalbound header around the post, Cleverley doubled the hosts' lead after playing a quick one-two with Michael Carrick and sliding into the space behind Cuellar. The England midfielder showed uncharacteristic composure to open his body and curl a powerful shot into the far corner.

United was rampant at this stage and Rooney was unlucky not to get in on the act, volleying just wide of the upright, before glancing a close-range header wide of the same post.

But they were kept honest by James McClean, who pounced on Rio Ferdinand's error, but opted to shoot from the byline instead of squaring the ball – thus wasting his side's best chance of the game as David De Gea snuffed out the opening.

The Black Cats found a foothold and De Gea had Patrice Evra to thank for heading a Stephane Sessegnon volley over the bar before halftime, before the Spaniard produced an important double save after the break from Craig Gardner and Sessegnon's follow-up.

In between the chances, the visitors watched a despondent Steven Fletcher suffer an injury that led to his withdrawal at halftime. Though his replacement Connor Wickham rifled a hopeful shot from the edge of the box just over the bar, United regained its momentum just before the hour mark.

After hitting the crossbar earlier, Rooney was on hand to tap-in Van Persie's square ball to give the home team an unassailable three goal lead, after the Dutchman – who chipped just wide moments earlier - somehow waltzed through the challenge of Cuellar and Titus Bramble.

Where its problems at the back were obvious, Sunderland still looked threatening going forward, and after Nemanja Vidic's long-awaited return came to fruition on the 67th minute, the Serbian had to watch as substitute Frazier Campbell rose at the back post to head Sessegnon's deep cross into the net.

And the pairing of Wickham and Campbell continued to pose problems - with the former firing a stinging drive at goal in the latter stages that required a De Gea knee to repel. Despite the late pressure though, United held firm to claim another three points in the race for the title.

Fellaini apologises to Shawcross after headbutt

Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini has apologized unreservedly after his headbutt on Ryan Shawcross overshadowed proceedings in the 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

Almost an hour into the contest, in the customary penalty box melee preceding a set-piece, the Belgium international clearly headbutted the Stoke center back.

The off-the-ball violation went unpunished though, as referee Mark Halsey missed the incident altogether.

After even his own manager condemned his actions, the Toffees' talisman has gone public with his apology, also pointing out why he did what he did.

"I apologise completely to Ryan Shawcross, my teammates and to our fans at the game," he said in a statement on the club's official website. "There was a lot of pushing and pulling going on inside the Stoke penalty area and I didn't feel I was getting any protection from the officials."

However, the 25-year-old was also eager to dismiss the notion that this was any reasonably excuse, deeming his actions 'unprofessional'.

"Nevertheless I know I shouldn't have done what I did," he added. "I have also apologized to the manager and the staff. I have no excuses, I was disappointed with the way I was being treated and I lost my temper, which was unprofessional of me."

Lazio 1-0 Inter: Clinical Klose knocks Nerazzurri's title bid

    239624hp2.jpg

Lazio left it late to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Inter in its Serie A clash at Stadio Olimpico on Saturday night.

After appearing to be second best against the Nerazzurri for the majority of a tepid contest, the hosts made the breakthrough eight minutes from the end with a clinical finish from Miroslav Klose to snatch all three points.

Lazio now leapfrogs Napoli into third place, one point behind second-placed Inter, but Juventus still holds command of Serie A with a four-point lead and a game to come against Atalanta on Sunday.

The first half was certainly not one for the purists, as both sides really struggled to establish any kind of rhythm in the attacking third of the field, with a series of blocked shots punctuating their offensive contributions.Goalmouth action was hard to come by and play frequently ground to a halt in midfield as the complete lack of tempo in the match resulted in a disappointing show for observers.

Lazio perhaps just shaded matters in the opening half, though that came with little credit as their best chance occurred when Cristian Ledesma blasted a snap-shot wide after a clearance from Andrea Ranocchia fell short.

Walter Gargano was shown a yellow card seconds before the interval for a series of fouls, and moments after the restart, he was followed into the referee’s notebook by Walter Samuel, who had upended Klose.Inter finally sparked into life shortly after the hour mark. Fredy Guarin drilled against the post after taking aim from the edge of the area, before Diego Milito sent a speculative half-volley off target moment later.

Federico Marchetti then came to Lazio’s rescue with a stunning double save, first tipping a drive from Antonio Cassano onto the post, before recovering in time to deny Yuto Nagatomo’s rebound from point-blank range.

But the Nerazzurri’s momentum evaporated almost as quickly as it appeared, and Lazio began to create openings of their own late on. Klose spurned two good chances, one with a poor first touch when unmarked in close, and another after overrunning the ball on a great Lazio counterattack.

But at the third time of asking, Klose made no mistake, running onto a through pass from Stefano Mauri and slotting neatly into the bottom corner. The German striker paid a price for the winner as he was forced off shortly after with an injury, but he had already made all the difference, as Inter could not muster a response in the little time that remained, giving the hosts a vital victory.

Both sides will be in action in the Coppa Italia midweek, as Inter hosts Serie B side Verona on Tuesday, and Lazio welcomes Serie A cellar dweller Siena the following day.

Moyes: Fellaini and Everton will take FA punishment for Shawcross headbutt

Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed that he will not tolerate the actions of Marouane Fellaini following the 25-year old's headbutt on defender Ryan Shawcross during the 1-1 draw at Stoke.

The match officials missed the incident as it happened while the players were jostling for a corner in the second half and consequently the Football Association will now review the incident on Monday to decide on the punishment due for the Belgian.

Speaking in his post match interview, Moyes stated that Fellaini's actions must be accounted for.

"We will take the punishment if it’s given for it [the headbutt], I’ve told him in the dressing room that it’s not acceptable and I won’t accept it as a manager that he does that," he said.

"He’s [Fellaini] a really good player, he’s a big part of the team and he’s let the team down."

Stoke manager Tony Pulis concurred with Moyes' comments, stating that Fellaini must face punishment as the referee missed the affair.

"I thought the rules were set out in stone. I like Mark Halsey, I think he’s a good referee, I don’t know whether he’s seen it but we’ll find out tonight but if he’s seen it and not acted then you really want to know why hasn’t he acted.

"I don’t think he can hide behind anything and what he’s [Fellaini] done is wrong. We get up and get on with it."

Mourinho casts doubt on Benzema fitness for Espanyol match

    233894hp2.jpg

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho says that Karim Benzema is unlikely to feature for his side when Espanyol travels to the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

The French striker was taken off during the match against Celta Vigo on Wednesday after he sprained his ankle and his trainer does not expect him to recover in time for the next game.

"I think Benzema will not play tomorrow. For me, if he has picked up an injury of any kind he should not be fit to play two days later," Mourinho told a press conference.

The Blancos' boss went on to praise Espanyol coach Javier Aguirre for the style of football he plays and the work ethic that he brings to his teams.

"Espanyol have a coach that I really get on with. His teams always play attractive football and have a top work rate," Mourinho said.

"I think that Aguirre will build on the foundations that the last coach put in place and start getting some good results very soon."

Aston Villa dealt injury blow as Dunne suffers setback

    209921hp2.jpg

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has revealed that defender Richard Dunne will be on the sidelines for the majority of the season and is also set to miss Ireland's World Cup qualifiers.

The 33-year old had a third operation on Thursday to try and resolve the groin and hip injury that occurred at the European Championship.

It is likely that Dunne will miss Ireland's games with Sweden and Austria in the
New Year and Lambert admitted he was hopeful the defender was finally on the road to recovery.

"Richard has had the operation in America and we are all hoping that once and for all it will be cleared up," Lambert told the Irish Examiner .

"This was the only place where we could get it done.

"He will come back over from the States in the next few days and hopefully start his rehab and then begin to look to the future.

"I’ve never seen anything like this and the medical people have never seen anything like this either. We have got to hope it has now been cleared up by this operation.

"The original injury occurred at the Euros and sometimes you can get to the bottom of it quickly and on other occasions it takes longer than you think.

"As a footballer you get frustrated because you cannot put your finger on the problem."

Lambert confirmed Villa was not seeking compensation and added: "We have not been down that road. Injuries can happen to players."

Sir Alex Ferguson calls on Cleverley to score more goals after Manchester United's victory over Sunderland

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has called on Tom Cleverley to find the back of the net more often after the 23-year-old scored a fine goal during his side's 3-1 victory over Sunderland.

The midfielder curled a delightful effort past Simon Mignolet after 19 minutes to add to Robin van Persie's opener as the Red Devils finished the day six points clear of Manchester City.

However, despite grabbing his second of the season, the manager feels Cleverley should now be adding more goals to his game due to his impressive finishing skills.

"[Cleverley] has goals, as a younger player there was always a goal in him. It was a great one-touch finish - he's got two this season and I really do expect more from him because he's a nice finisher," he told Sky Sports News.

The 70-year-old also praised Cleverley's midfield relationship with Michael Carrick, as the pair combined well for the youngster's strike in the first half: "Last week [against Manchester City] they were terrific and today they were terrific.

"It gives me great options because people keep saying we're short in midfield, but we've got [Paul] Scholes, [Ryan] Giggs, [Darren] Fletcher, Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson - we're not so bad."

Sir Alex was delighted with the link-up play between his players, but was also wary of the threat Sunderland posed in the second half as Martin O'Neill's side searched for a way back from 3-0 down.

He continued: "It was fantastic football, some of the play was great. Combination play, interchange play, the second goal epitomized that play.

"I don't know whether we relaxed or Sunderland picked up the baton towards the last 20 minutes, but they had two or three chances and did very well in that period. They had a bit of momentum and I was just glad to get the result."

With Nemanja Vidic making his return from a knee injury in the second half, the United manager revealed his relief at having a full roster of defenders to choose from once again.

"It's great to have him back and all our defenders are fit. That collection of defenders will definitely help us," he said.

"The name of the game is to win games now - to get momentum going, get consistency going, and hopefully we'll keep going."
