:cool:Sir Alex Ferguson hails ‘tremendous’ Van Persie winner for Manchester United

    244375hp2.jpg

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has coined Robin van Persie’s performance after coming off the bench during his side’s FA Cup tie with West Ham as "tremendous".

The Dutchman came on late to provide the Red Devils with a crucial leveler on 90 minutes, securing a 2-2 draw at Upton Park and ensuring the Old Trafford outfit with a replay in midweek.

Van Persie successfully latched onto a Ryan Giggs long pass before crashing home a thunderous equalizer past Jussi Jääskeläinen in the West Ham goal.

Ferguson has praised the Dutchman’s performance after coming on, claiming that his presence gave an element of maturity to the Manchester United attack.

"He's at a mature age now.” he told reporters. “He's brought that maturity to our front line, and his performance after coming on was tremendous.”

Asked if he lost hope in Manchester United’s ability to grab a late equalizer against West Ham, Ferguson admitted he never loses hope in his squad.

"You never do that with our team," Ferguson said. "When you're 2-1 down with a couple of minutes left you just hope you get a break, but the manner of goal - the pass from Ryan Giggs and first touch from Robin van Persie and his finish - is absolutely world class, absolutely fantastic."

Manchester City rocked by Aguero torn hamstring blow

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has confirmed he has suffered a torn hamstring and is currently undergoing specialist treatment in Italy.

The Argentina international picked up the injury during the second half of City's 3-0 victory over Stoke in the Premier League on Tuesday and is now set to be sidelined for approximately four to six weeks with the problem.

"The studies confirmed I have a torn muscle. We have to keep on thinking positive and try to recover in the best way possible" Aguero posted on Twitter. "For that, I've traveled to Italy where a specialist is treating me. I'll keep you up to date in how the injury evolves."

Aguero is likely to miss around five Premier League matches for City, including fixtures against Arsenal next Sunday, and a home tie against Liverpool on February 3.

Roberto Mancini's side is seven points behind Manchester United in the Premier League, while a bust-up between the Italian and Mario Balotelli on Thursday has put the forward's future at Eastlands in doubt.

Manchester City 3-0 Watford: Tevez, Barry, and Lopes see hosts progress with ease

Manchester City booked its place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Watford at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry gave the hosts a commanding halftime lead with Fernando Forestieri missing a golden chance for the Hornets.

City bossed the second half but failed to add to their goal tally until deep into injury time when Marcos Lopes bagged a goal on his debut but City's progress was never really under threat from Watford.

Roberto Mancini dropped Mario Balotelli to the bench after their training ground bust-up during the week. Joleon Lescott partnered Vincent Kompany in defense while Tevez came in to partner Edin Dzeko up front. Gianfranco Zola, meanwhile, recalled Matej Vydra and Troy Deeney to his starting line-up.

Watford impressed in the opening stages of the match; Zola's side attacked with freedom and saw two decent shots blocked in the first few minutes but Manchester City soon had the Hornets pegged back into their own half.

The pressure looked to have paid off when Dzeko turned in Kompany's scuffed shot after 20 minutes but the Bosnian's celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

City was not to be denied for long though as Tevez drove home a free kick five minutes later, the Argentine's blistering shot went straight through Watford's four-man wall leaving Jonathan Bond with little hope of keeping it out.

Costel Pantillimon then had to make a save straight from the restart to keep the hosts ahead as Forestieri beat the offside trap but couldn't find a finish past the City shot-stopper.

Mancini's side didn't threaten much for the rest of the half but managed to double its lead just before the break when Barry ghosted in to the box to nod in James Milner's cross after fine work from David Silva in the 42nd minute.

The second half was very one-sided with Watford rarely enjoying possession in Manchester City's half.

Tevez came close to finding a third for the hosts but missed the ball by inches when he tried to slide in Milner's low ball across the six yard box.

Balotelli came on for Dzeko with 20 minutes to go, suggesting he has buried the hatchet with manager Mancini, and had a fierce shot well saved by Bond.

Deeney had two decent chances as Zola's side made a late push for a goal but the 24-year-old failed to find the target with either effort.

Lopes capped off a great day for City with a debut goal in the closing stages. The young Portuguese calmly dispatched a side-footed finish from close range.

Mansfield 1-2 Liverpool: Sturridge debut goal and controversial Suarez strike edge Reds through in FA Cup

    244549hp2.jpg

Liverpool booked its place in the FA Cup fourth round, avoiding an upset after a closely-fought 2-1 victory over Mansfield at Field Mill on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors raced into an early lead with Daniel Sturridge running on to Jonjo Shelvey's superb pass before calmly curling an effort into the bottom corner, leaving Stags goalkeeper Alan Marriott with no chance.

They stretched their lead near the hour mark, with Luis Suarez tapping home after some good work by Stewart Downing down the right, with the Uruguayan forward handling the ball in the box before stroking it home into an empty net for a hugely contentious goal.

With time running out and their hopes fading, Mansfield grabbed a goal back through Matt Green after his strike inside the box took two deflections on it way in after finding himself unmarked inside the box to get something on Colin Daniel's cross.

Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox made just one change from the side that beat Alfreton Town, with winger Louis Briscoe replacing Junior Daniel in midfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers made eight changes from the side that beat Sunderland in its last outing, with only Andre Wisdom, Lucas, and Downing retaining their places while new signing Sturridge was handed his debut for the club, with Suarez dropped to the bench and captain Steven Gerrard rested completely.

After bossing possession early on, Liverpool took the lead in the 7th minute after Sturridge latched on to Shelvey's defense-splitting through ball before coolly slotting past the onrushing Marriott.

With Liverpool looking to put the tie to bed early on, Sturridge should have doubled his tally and his team's advantage shortly afterwards when the forward collected another pass from Shelvey in his stride, beating the offside trap in the process, before seeing his effort saved well by Marriott low down to his right.

The hosts had their best chance just after the half hour mark when striker Green forced Brad Jones into a smart stop with a dipping strike from outside the box after some neat work from Exodus Geohaghon down the right flank.

Sturridge went close again just before the break, bringing out a superb save from Marriott after jinking past Lee Beevers inside the box before firing a vicious strike into the bottom corner, with the goalkeeper getting a fingertip to it to push it around the post, with Liverpool going in at the break a goal ahead.

Mansfield went close straight after the interval, though, with Anthony Howell spinning inside the box after Lindon Meikle's deft pass, with Jones turning the ball away at his near post as they cranked up the pressure at the start of the second half.

Moments later, a goalmouth scramble saw ensued after Geohaghon's header from a corner saw Green go close with a back heel which was hacked clear off the line and Liverpool almost scored on the counter, with Sturridge screwing his effort just wide of the post in a frantic passage of play.

With the hosts chasing an equalizer, substitute Suarez grabbed the second goal in the 58th minute in controversial circumstances, after appearing to use his hand to knock the ball past Marriott after seeing his initial effort rebound up and into his path, leaving him a simple tap in.

Mansfield responded and kept its hopes of an upset alive by grabbing a goal back in the 80th minute through Green after his deflected effort flew in after Liverpool failed to clear their lines after a routine cross into the box.

This prompted an excellent response from the hosts and they began to flood forward in the pursuit of a dramatic late equalizer, with Green's snapshot from the edge of the box forcing Jones to get a strong hand to claw the ball away in the dying moments, but despite a performance full of endeavour and spirit, Liverpool held on for the narrow win.

Real Madrid 4-3 Real Sociedad: Ronaldo leads los Blancos to dramatic win

    244566hp2.jpg

Real Madrid secured a priceless 4-3 victory over Real Sociedad in a thrilling Liga clash at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, with Cristiano Ronaldo coming through with a second-half brace to overcome Xabi Preito's hat trick.

Jose Mourinho dropped Iker Casillas to the bench in favor of Antonio Adan for the second game running, and matters seemed to be going according to plan when Karim Benzema put the hosts in front after only two minutes.

It all fell apart for Madrid and Mourinho four minutes later, though, as Adan conceded a penalty and was sent off for a professional foul, allowing Prieto to equalize from the spot. Sami Khedira put Los Blancos back in front, but Prieto pegged them back once more five minutes before the break.

The second half was just as eventful, as Ronaldo appeared to put the match out of reach with a quickfire double with 20 minutes remaining, but Prieto made matters tense with his third goal, before Dani Estrada's late red card ended the challenge of Sociedad for good.

Despite the victory, Madrid still remains in third place, 13 points behind leaders Barcelona, who can stretch their lead at the top further when it faces Espanyol at Camp Nou later on Sunday.

Mourinho’s decision to bench Casillas did not prove popular with the home support, who hailed the mention of the club captain while booing that of their coach during the pre-match lineup announcements. His choice proved to be costly six minutes in, as a poor clearance from Adan invited pressure from Carlos Vela, who was then tripped up inside the area by the keeper, who was given a straight red card.

The sight of Casillas readying himself on the touchline drove the fans into a frenzy, but after finally stepping between the posts after a lengthy delay, the club captain could do nothing to stop Prieto from converting the spot kick.

In the 68th minute, los Blancos finally surged ahead for good. A fantastic clipped ball from Benzema released Ronaldo, who needed only one touch to calmly place the ball into the back of the net. Two minutes later, Ronaldo would seemingly put the result beyond any doubt with a swerving free kick from the corner of the box that flew into the roof of the net.

Sociedad wasn’t finished just yet, and Prieto ensured a nervy end to the game after latching on to Chori's through ball to complete his hat trick with 14 minutes remaining. Sociedad's hopes were put to rest once and for all in the 79th minute, though, as Estrada was shown his second yellow card for blocking Ronaldo on the wing, giving Madrid the boost they needed to close out the victory.

AC Milan 2-1 Siena: Rossoneri battle past basement boys

    244510hp2.jpg

Milan left it late to secure victory over Serie A's bottom side Siena after two second-half strikes saw the San Siro side come away 2-1 winners.Substitute Bojan Krkic opened the scoring in a scrappy game before Giampaolo Pazzini doubled Milan's lead. Siena sub Michele Paolucci pulled one back for the visitors, but the Rossoneri held on to secure their first win to mark their return from the winter break.

Kevin Constant came close to inadvertently opening the scoring in the third minute when his misplaced cross almost got the better of Gianluca Pegolo, the Siena stopper having to back-pedal quickly in order to tip the left back’s center behind for a corner.

Pazzini was then inches away from connecting with Riccardo Montolivo’s free kick before Stephan El Shaarawy squandered the best chance of the half. Serie A’s top marksman was given the type of opportunity he usually thrives on as the Siena defenders backed off and allowed the striker to dart into the box unchallenged. El Shaarawy was to be thwarted on this occasion by the bravery of Pegolo, though, with the keeper diving at the feet of the oncoming attacker to divert his effort wide for a corner. The visitors mounted one of their rare attacks down the left-hand side through Cristiano Del Grosso and his cutback fell to the feet of Alessandro Rosina, whose effort had to be beaten away by Abbiati.

Spurred into life by the prospect of falling behind, the home side turned to Kevin-Prince Boateng in their attempts to create anything that could break down the Bianconeri’s defense.

The first opportunity created by the Ghanaian winger should have seen Milan take the lead. Boateng was found by Montolivo’s cutting through ball and his cross was met by El Shaarawy at the back post, but the tricky forward could only head his effort back across the face of goal and behind for a goal kick.Boateng was to be involved minutes later, however when the Rossoneri finally broke the deadlock in somewhat controversial circumstances.

Some of the Siena players had stopped when Erjon Bogdani appeared to be fouled on the halfway line but with the referee not taking any action, Boateng picked up the ball and drove forward to deliver an inch-perfect cross for substitute Bojan Krkic to head home from the edge of the six-yard box.

The lead was doubled with just 10 minutes left when Felipe needlessly nudged Pazzini inside the box, and the former Inter man picked himself up to lash the penalty into the roof of the net.

Siena pulled one back though substitute Michele Paolucci, who met Angelo’s cross to power a header past Abbiati and set up a tense final few minutes for the hosts.

Juventus 1-2 Sampdoria: Icardi at the double as 10-man Blucerchiati triumph in Turin

    238124hp2.jpg

Juventus' title defense suffered a blow as it succumbed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of lowly Sampdoria at the Juventus Stadium.

Sebastian Giovinco opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half after Claudio Marchisio was brought down by Gaetano Berardi. Mauro Icardi netted a second-half brace to secure a memorable win for Riccardo Garrone's side that
saw the Turn outfit lose its first game of 2013.

The hosts began the brighter of the two sides, and it took Sergio Romero to deny Juventus an early goal, as the Sampdoria goalkeeper smothered at the feet of Giovinco after the Argentine initially hesitated from a low cross.

The pint-sized Bianconeri star came close to netting the opener minutes later after Simone Padoin pulled back for the striker, who fired just over from the edge of the 18-yard box.

However, the Blucerchiati shotstopper was unable to prevent Giovinco from netting minutes later, tucking into the bottom left corner from the penalty spot after Claudio Marchisio was brought down by Gaetano Berardi in box.

Juventus thought it had doubled the advantage on the half hour mark after a corner had been won. Andrea Pirlo's cross appeared to have been scrambled over the line, but Romero did well to prevent the goal. The afternoon went from bad to worse for Riccardo Garrone's side in the last 15 minutes of the half after Berardi was sent off for a second booking following a lunge on Andrea Barzagli.

Even so, Sampdoria netted early into the second half to pull level. Icardi fired a half-volley goalbound with Buffon unable to prevent the ball from squeezing past him and into the back of the net.

Despite the man advantage, Juventus was toothless in the attack and was made to pay with 20 minutes remaining. Icardi was played in by Pedro Obiang and the Sampdoria front-man smashed past Buffon from an acute angle.

The hosts looked for an instant reply and came close to dragging themselves back into the encounter after substitute Mirko Vucinic blasted against the cross bar and onto the goalline before the Blucerchiati managed to clear the danger.

The Montenegro international poked just inches wide from two yards moments later as Juventus pushed for their second goal and the equaliser. Padoin fired a stinging effort at Romero, fumbling his effort but the Sampdoria goalkeeper managed to pounce on the ball before Vucinic could tap home as the visitors secured a surprise win at the Juventus Stadium.

Swansea 2-2 Arsenal: Graham rescues a replay for spirited Swans

    244527hp2.jpg

Danny Graham took advantage of hesitant Arsenal defending to force a 2-2 draw and a replay for Swansea City in an entertaining end to Sunday’s FA Cup third-round encounter.

After a lackluster opening 45 minutes, second-half substitute Michu took mere moments to break the deadlock and give the hosts the lead. Two goals in three minutes from Lukas Podolski and Kieran Gibbs turned the tie on its head, though, only for Graham to lash home from inside the area after Arsenal failed to clear a late corner.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the side who drew 1-1 with Southampton, with Olivier Giroud, Per Mertesacker and Aaron Ramsey coming in for Podolski, Thomas Vermaelen and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain respectively. Michu - who scored two at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the season - had to make do with a place on the Swansea bench after failing to fully overcome a back injury.

The opening 10 minutes saw the hosts more than happy to soak up a dominance of possession that Arsenal has rarely enjoyed against Swansea in recent league encounters, without showing any cutting edge in attack.

Threatening on the counter, the Welsh side carved open the first real chance when Graham stung the palms of Wojciech Szczesny with a fine half-volley from the edge of the area. While the hosts were frustrating Arsenal with a solid defensive display, Chico Flores in particular impressing, the Gunners were not doing themselves any favours with aimless runs down the flanks and shots from distance.

Again, Swansea nearly sprung a surprise when Kyle Bartley, in only his second appearance for the Swans since his summer move from North London, out-jumped Mertesacker and guided a header against the bar, with Szczesny beaten.
Arsenal came out in the second half with more dynamism about their attacking play, with Giroud going close three times inside the opening seven minutes, only to be thwarted by Michel Vorm on each occasion.Loud shouts for a penalty to the visitors then followed when the Frenchman appeared to be felled by Bartley, but replays showed he tripped over his own heels.

As an instant reaction to Arsenal’s rediscovered flair, Michu was introduced by Michael Laudrup and rewarded his manager within seconds by controlling Graham’s flick on, gliding past Mertesacker with ease and holding off Laurent Koscielny to slot home his 15th goal of the season.

As the match entered the final 10 minutes, Swansea was visibly being pushed further and further back by their opponents, and Arsenal’s own second-half savior Podolski spun smartly inside the area to convert Koscielny’s flick into the area to level the scores.

The visitors were not done there. Just two minutes later, Gibbs played a neat one-two with Mikel Arteta to dart into the area and smash a close-range volley into the roof of Vorm’s net to turn the tie on its head.

Swansea never wilted, though. With less than four minutes left to play, Arsenal failed to deal with a Swansea corner and allow Graham to beat Szczesny on the angle from close range and force a replay at the Emirates.

Udinese 3-0 Inter: Di Natale double downs 10-man Nerazzurri

    216074hp2.jpg

A brace from Antonio Di Natale coupled with a Luis Muriel strike ensured Udinese began 2013 impressively with a 3-0 win over 10-man Inter Milan. The loss was the Nerazzurri's first in their first game after the winter break since 1999.

The two Serie A sides played to a scoreless first half, and Inter began the second half the stronger of the two sides and perhaps should've taken the lead after five minutes of the restart. Jonathan fired wide from six yards out when it looked easier to score on Udinese goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic.

Freddy Guarin then tested the Serbian international from close range, but the Udinese shotstopper was able to get down low to deny the Colombian, before Rodrigo Palacio saw his effort blocked by Brkic moments later.

Moments later, Udinese took the lead, arguably against the run of play. Di Natale was played in behind the Inter defense by Andrea Lazzarri before firing across goal. Handanovic got a hand to his shot, but it was too powerful for his former teammate, as the Italian's effort nestled into the bottom corner.

Things went from bad to worse for the Nerazzurri minutes later after Juan Jesus fouled Muriel to receive his second booking of the encounter and was subsequently red carded.

Udinese made its man advantage count and doubled the lead with 15 minutes to go. Muriel was played in by Dusan Basta, and the Udinese striker fired past Handanovic with a goal nearly identical to Di Natale's opener. Di Natale then netted his second and Udinese's third five minutes later, poking home from close range after being picked out by Lazzarri from the left.

Rodgers blames officials for failing to spot Suarez handball

The Liverpool manager has defended the Uruguay striker, after appearing to use his arm in the process of scoring his side's second goal of their 2-1 FA Cup victory over Mansfield

    244568hp2.jpg

The Reds had taken an early league against their non-league opponents through Daniel Sturridge, only for Suarez to use his arm to take the ball past the opposition goalkeeper before sliding the ball into the net to double his side's advantage.

However, Rodgers refused to condemn his star striker, who would draw further ire from the home fans by pointing to his hand in celebrating his strike.

"I have just seen it again and there is no doubt it was handball," Rodgers told ESPN. "I think what the referee and the officials were looking was that it wasn't deliberate, which it clearly wasn't.

"I spoke to the fourth official after the goal was given and asked him if it was handball, because I couldn't see, and he said it was. So obviously it is unfortunate for Mansfield and lucky for us that we got the goal.

"It doesn't really happen in football, to be honest.

"You don't see it [happen] and it's not Luis' job to do that. He's gone in there, it hasn't been a deliberate handball - [the ball] pitched up and hit his hand.

"That's up to the officials to deem. That's why they get paid and that's why they are professional officials.

"Andre Marriner, I thought, was excellent today along with his officials. It's one of those things that was unfortunate."
