Sir Alex Ferguson to rotate Manchester United squad during crucial week

The 71-year-old has revealed that he will ring the changes between Sunday's clash with Everton at Old Trafford and Wednesday's Champions League meeting with Real Madrid Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he intends to heavily rotate his squad during a crucial week for the club.

The Red Devils face Champions League-chasing Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday before a Champions League last-16 clash with Real Madrid.

And the Scot says he must place his full trust in his players in order to ensure he has fresh legs in both games.

“It will be different teams,” the 71-year-old told reporters. “The team on Sunday will not be the same as the team that plays on Wednesday. “I trust the squad of players I have. They are all internationals, they are all good players and there is no reason why I can’t play them.

“They’re all contributing in their own way and that gives us a better chance of dealing with the various competitions we’re in.”

The United manager also lamented the fact that preparations have been disrupted by midweek international friendlies, adding: “There is not a domestic manager who can agree to friendly internationals at this time of year."

However, he did concede that the confidence boost provided by England's 2-1 win over Brazil could help two members of his squad.

“I was happy for Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling to play full games at Wembley because they have not had a lot of football anyway," he concluded.

Santos president refuses idea of Neymar sale to Manchester City

    253183hp2.jpg

The Brazilian is one of the world's most sought-after talents and Roberto Mancini is reportedly hoping to strike a deal to give his side a much-needed attacking boost
Santos president Luis Álvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro has rejected the idea of selling his prized asset Neymar to Manchester City.

Following reports appearing in Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo on Thursday that City will offer a blank check for the Brazilian superstar, Ribeiro has rubbished suggestions he may seek to cash in.

While he admitted it was "not a lack of funds" that would prevent a sale to Manchester City, Ribeiro insists there is no amount of money he would accept from the Premier League champions.

"I anticipate my answer to any bids that might come: the answer is no," he said. "Neymar will stay at Santos until 2014, and I hope that he'll continue here for even longer."

With Roberto Mancini's men trailing Manchester United in the title race, the Italian is keen to learn from the lessons of last summer - when his side was pipped to the signings of Robin Van Persie, Eden Hazard and Javi Martinez - by making an early move for the 21-year-old.

Ribeiro, however, is adamant Neymar is going nowhere.

He added: "I have a very clear basis for Neymar staying here, resisting offers from the Spanish clubs [Barcelona and Real Madrid, in 2011], for one basic reason: he's happy.

"He costs us a relatively modest amount of money, given his talent. His presence translates into intangible gains, like our fan base growing 20% in the last two years."

Ribeiro even admitted he has taken inspiration from a former Santos president, who dug in to ensure Pele did not leave the club during his pomp.

He added: "It's the repetition of the phenomenon experienced in the the 50s and 60s, when Pele attracted a legion of new fans, that went beyond the limits of the city.

"Repeating history is not very creative, but what Athie [Jorge Coury, former Santos president] did with Pele has inspired me."

Bayern Munich 4-0 Schalke: Heynckes' side strides clear as Bundesliga title edges ever closer

    253933hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich extended its lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 15 points by overcoming Schalke 4-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Neither side really started the game well. In fact, surprisingly, it was Schalke which had the first sight of goal. Michel Bastos got the ball on the left and took an early shot, but it flew into the side-netting.

Gradually, though, Bayern began to take command. First, Franck Ribery dribbled down to the byline, but rather than crossing, he shot from the narrowest of angles, and had Timo Hildebrand scrambling across his line.

The Konigsblauen defence was standing surprisingly firm, but they should have been a goal behind just after the 15-minute mark, when Schweinsteiger bent in a lovely cross straight onto the head of Robben, who contrived to head wide when he should have scored.

That was as long as the resistance lasted, though. Less than a minute later, Ribery twisted and turned in the box, and was promptly brought down by Marco Hoger. Alaba stepped up to take the penalty, and sent Hildebrand the wrong way.

Scweinsteiger then had a chance to make it 2-0 with another free header, but squandered it. It was not long before he made amends.

Saed Kolasinac took down Robben just outside the box, Schweinsteiger claimed the resulting free kick ahead of the Dutchman and Toni Kroos, and bent it brilliantly into the bottom corner, via the inside of the post.

Bayern started the second half in much the same way it finished the first. Robben drove down to the byline, pulled the ball back, and Gomez was able to touch it into the path of Alaba, who got his second of the game with a neat finish.

Seconds later, it could have been four when Robben and Gomez beat the offside trap, but rather than square it to his teammate, the Dutchman elected to try to chip Hildebrand, and sent the ball onto the roof of the net.

The next time Robben was in a scoring position, though, he did play in the Germany international. Schweinsteiger played a masterful ball over the top to the 29-year-old, who squared it to Gomez, who finally got his goal.

After just a few seconds of stoppage time, the referee blew the whistle. Schalke slips to ninth, but Bayern marches on.

Juventus 2-0 Fiorentina: Vucinic and Matri net in authoritative display
    253925hp2.jpg

Juventus strolled to comfortable 2-0 win over rival Fiorentina at Juventus Stadium, ending a run of three domestic games without tasting victory.

Despite an open start to proceedings the Bianconeri soon asserted their dominance over the Florence outfit with Mirko Vucinic and Alessandro Matri providing the goals in what eventually proved to be a routine win.

The Viola had clearly not come to Turin to sit back and that contributed to an extremely stretched start to the game.

Andrea Pirlo looked on song early on as he sprayed a number of quality passes in behind the defense but it was Claudio Marchisio who provided the goal threat in his 200th appearance for the club, pulling a low effort narrowly wide of the goal in the ninth minute.

Both goalkeepers were having a busy start to the evening yet the pair were not fazed by intensity of the game as Stevan Jovetic, Juan Cuadrado and Vucinic were all kept out before 15 minutes had passed.

Stephan Lichtsteiner was the next to go close but in the 20th minute Vucinic was the man to find the back of the net. The Montenegrin pounced on Stefan Savic's headed clearance and then rifled an astonishing volley past Emiliano Viviano from 25 yards.

Vucinic then had a chance to double the Old Lady's advantage just after the half hour mark as he dispossessed Gonzalo Rodriguez on the edge of the box. Matri could not provide a supporting option so the former Roma man went alone and ended up firing a shot straight at the keeper.

Vicenzo Montella's men continued to attack their hosts but they lacked conviction and in the 42nd minute the Bianconeri grabbed their second.

Arturo Vidal did magnificently to pluck the ball out of the sky before turning and surging into the area. He slid a pass into Matri, who peeled away from his defender and swept a shot into the back of the net.

Juve continued in a similar fashion after the break and it took it just three minutes to forge an opportunity in the second half. Paolo De Ceglie's cutback was met by Vidal at the edge of the box but he could not keep his attempt on goal down.

Content with their two-goal advantage, the Bianconeri began to approach the game with an increased level of caution, built upon their resilience at the back.

The visitors did not have an answer up front and would have found themselves three goals down in the 64th minute if Matri had been able to find the far corner from Lichtsteiner's threaded pass.

Substitute Sebastian Giovinco was desperately close to having the perfect impact as he sent a curling effort to Viviano's right. The keeper, however, had other ideas and parried the ball well to safety.

Juventus' win therefore puts the pressure on Napoli to get a result against third-placed Lazio later on Saturday or see itself fall six points away from the Serie A summit.

Norwich 0-0 Fulham: Canaries still searching for first league win since December

    253880hp2.jpg

Norwich City was held to a drab goal-less draw at home to Fulham, leaving Chris Hughton’s men without a Premier League victory in almost two months.

Neither goalkeeper had a serious save to make in a stale match at Carrow Road, where a number of new faces provided the only real excitement for either set of fans.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the opening 10 minutes, with the diminutive Wes Hoolahan, who scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland in midweek, looking lively in behind full debutant Luciano Becchio.

The playmaker provided the Argentine striker with an early chance to open his account, picking the former Leeds man out with a low ball across the penalty area, but his low shot on the stretch was grabbed gratefully by Mark Schwarzer.

Wins had been few and far between for both these sides coming into the match, and this was evident from the tentative football on display, with neither team really managing to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

Becchio showed glimpses of his goal-scoring instincts by regularly getting himself into dangerous positions, but will have been frustrated by a lack of quality service from his new Premier League teammates.

Martin Jol will probably have been the happier of the two managers going in at halftime after seeing his team silence a usually vocal Carrow Road crowd, but neither boss could have enjoyed the opening period as an attacking spectacle.

Mark Bunn was a mere spectator in the first half, but he was finally forced into a save just after the break when Steve Sidwell hit a dipping strike from the edge of the penalty area that was easy enough for the Norwich keeper.

The visitors were certainly playing with more purpose at the start of the second half, and Sebastien Bassong was brave to block Bryan Ruiz’s well-struck half-volley from just outside the box.

However, the game soon returned to the pedestrian pace of the opening 45 minutes, as the attacking players struggled to make an impact at either end of the pitch.

Norwich’s best chance of a breakthrough seemed to be a set-piece from the cultured left foot of Robert Snodgrass, and the Scot tested the Cottagers defense with a couple of dangerous corners into a crowded penalty area.

Becchio’s last contribution of the match was a beautiful layoff to Johnson, who struck the ball disappointingly wide from the edge of the box, as Kei Kamara was soon on to make his debut in the place of the former Leeds striker.

The Sierra Leonean forward made his presence felt straight away as he rose highest to meet a long ball into the penalty area, but the powerful striker’s header was well over the bar.

The on-loan Sporting Kansas City man demonstrated an impressive turn of pace in his late cameo, and was also in the right place to meet a loose ball in the penalty area, forcing Mark Schwarzer to brave a clattering in order to close down the danger.

That promising glimpse of Kamara’s potential will at least have provided the home supporters with a bright spark to focus on as they left the stadium, having failed to collect three points for the ninth successive game.

Swansea 4-1 QPR: Michu doubles up to pile pressure on hapless strugglers

    253866hp2.jpg

Magnificent Michu was at the double for the Swans as the Welsh outfit sees off Redknapp's Rangers, who remain bottom of the Premier League, at the Liberty StadiumSwansea’s Spanish contingent saw it move up to seventh in the Premier League table with a fine 4-1 victory over an inept QPR at the Liberty Stadium.

QPR will grab the headlines in what was yet another dismal afternoon for Harry Redknapp’s men in South Wales, but all eyes should be on Swansea, which could make a late surge for a top six finish. The Swans were barely out of first gear but were still able to put four goals past Rangers, thanks to the magnificent Michu.

With the Hoops looking to move closer to safety by picking up a victory against Michael Laudrup’s Swansea, it was the Swans who took all three points. A brace from Michu and further goals from Angel Rangel and Pablo Hernandez saw the Welsh side overtake Liverpool in the table.

Redknapp was without striker Loic Remy – still sidelined with a groin injury – but handed a first Premier League start in 14 months to Jermaine Jenas. For Swansea, Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm made his comeback from a knee injury.

The Swans dominated the game from the very first whistle with the returning Nathan Dyer, starting in place of the injured Leon Britton, particularly impressive in the opening stages. Swansea’s passing game mesmerized the Rangers defense at times and it took just seven and-a-half minutes for the Welsh side to take the lead.

Dyer stung the palms of Julio Cesar with a powerful effort from outside the box. The Brazilian goalkeeper got a hand to the ball but could only parry it towards the incoming Michu, who scuffed his shot but saw it loop into the back of the net. The Spaniard ended his six game goal drought by scoring his 17th of the season.

Just 10 minutes later, Swansea doubled the lead. Wayne Routledge’s stunning pass put Angel Rangel in behind Jamie Mackie. The full back’s strike from a narrow angle was blocked once again by Cesar but Rangel was the quickest to fire home the rebound.

Two minutes into the second half Bobby Zamora pulled one back for Rangers. Ben Davies’s loose pass was intercepted by Adel Taarabt who drove towards goal. Taarabt’s long range strike was saved well by Vorm, but he couldn’t hold onto the ball and it was parried towards the incoming Zamora who made it 2-1.

QPR’s joy was short-lived. Swansea responded to conceding fantastically when Pablo Hernandez worked his magic down the left wing. Weaving into the box and dribbling his way past Nedum Onuoha, the Spaniard fired across goal and his shot somehow found its way past Cesar and into the bottom corner.

As QPR rallied they were denied a clear penalty when Ashley Williams handled Stephane Mbia’s volley in the box. The referee waved away the protests before Kyle Bartley, making his Premier League debut, cleared off the line as Rangers attempted to force their way back into the game.

With the game petering out, there was more joy for Swansea and Michu. The Spaniard, latching on to Dyer's superb through ball behind Christopher Samba, managed to clip the ball past the onrushing Cesar.

The only blemish for Swansea was the injury to defender Chico Flores, who was stretchered off with an ankle injury following a collision with QPR’s Mbia and could miss the Capital One Cup final at Wembley in two weeks time.

Chelsea 4-1 Wigan: Lampard and Marin wrap up comfortable Blues win

    253871hp2.jpg

Chelsea came through with a 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Wigan at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Blues were eased over the line by a trademark Frank Lampard strike to move back ahead of Tottenham in third place.

A more lively Fernando Torres, who replaced Demba Ba in the starting XI, showed good awareness to play Ramires in on goal for Chelsea's opener, before Eden Hazard displayed a cool head to drill the Blues into a two goal lead following enterprising build-up by Cesar Azpilicueta.

A poorly timed offside trap – Gary Cahill the culprit – allowed Shaun Maloney to scamper through and finish beyond Petr Cech but Rafa Benitez's team rallied and finished the job courtesy of Lampard and a late Marko Marin header.

The Blues opened the scoring. David Luiz's pass from midfield in the 23rd minute was turned around the corner by Torres into the path of the overlapping Ramires. The Brazilian steadied himself as he entered Al-Habsi's box and coolly stroked the ball high into the net to give the hosts the lead. It was all too easy for the Blues.

Wigan emerged for the second period sticking to its principles of controlled possession and for a moment it looked as if it might trouble a relaxed Chelsea. But the Latics found chances difficult to come by and on the 56th minute a routine ball over the top found Jean Beausejour out of position and chasing Azpilicueta.

The right back plundered into the Wigan box and squared neatly for Hazard, who controlled his right-foot effort well as he fired through a crowd and under Al-Habsi.

But Wigan was not done. Two minutes later, it had a goal as James McArthur's cute ball over the top of the defense exposed a frail offside trap. Cech looked to pounce on the loose ball but Maloney was faster and bent his shot into the unguarded goal from a wide angle.

Arouna Kone was introduced as Martinez pushed for an equalizer and for a time it seemed like it was imminent. Kone tested Cech and McArthur should have done better with a deflection that fell to him in the box. The away team appealed in unison for a penalty as Ronnie Stam's shot appeared to strike Ashley Cole's arm, but Mike Dean decided it was unintentional.

And so it was left for Lampard to steal the headlines. A scampering Hazard run down the left drew the defense towards the Belgian and his cutback was intelligently dummied by substitute Juan Mata, leaving Lampard the space to firmly smash a trademark right foot shot beyond Al-Habsi.

In the dying moments, the late substitute Marin pounced to plant a diving header into an empty net after Al-Habsi could only parry a booming Azpilicueta effort wide. Torres almost repeated the feat moments later but Al-Habsi denied the Spaniard with a double save from Ramires and then the striker.

Sunderland 0-1 Arsenal: Cazorla winner tempered by Wilshere injury worry

    253872hp2.jpg

Arsenal overcame a physical and fiery Sunderland side in a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light, but the joy of victory will have been tempered by a second-half injury to Jack Wilshere.

Arsene Wenger’s side took the lead in the 35th minute, as Theo Walcott set up Santi Cazorla to smash a low drive past Simon Mignolet from 20 yards. Reduced to 10 men in the second half, the Gunners had to cling on for three huge points.

Captain Lee Cattermole returned to the Sunderland starting XI in place of former Gunner Sebastian Larsson, while Tottenham loanee Danny Rose was picked at left back.

Laurent Koscielny, a doubt before the game, limped out of the prematch warmup so was replaced by Carl Jenkinson, with Bacary Sagna moving to centre-back. Elsewhere, Aaron Ramsey and Cazorla came in for Abou Diaby and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The match began at a furious pace with Wenger gesticulating angrily from the sidelines as the Black Cats threw themselves into thunderous tackles – Cattermole was booked after just 80 seconds – though the Frenchman’s side did not wilt in the face of such physicality.

Jack Wilshere, who starred for England against Brazil in midweek, threaded a pass behind the Sunderland defence for Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Minutes later Wilshere was involved again, back-heeling the ball to Ramsey on the edge of the box after a mazy run forward. The Welshman’s powerful effort took a nick off Titus Bramble and flew towards the top corner, but Mignolet soared through the air and palmed the ball away.

Arsenal’s number 10 was beginning to take a firm grip on the match, and another silky foray towards goal created the Gunner’s opener. Wilshere found Walcott on the edge of the box who laid the ball off to Cazorla, and the Spaniard rifled a left-footed shot into the far corner of the goal.

Ramsey could have doubled Arsenal’s lead just before the break, latching on to Giroud’s deflected pass, but fired straight at Mignolet from close range.

Just five minutes after the restart, Wilshere – already carrying a heavy bandage on his thigh – was forced off after a body-check by Alfred N’Diaye, and the 21-year-old’s exit signalled a shift in momentum.

Sunderland began to commit more men forward; N’Diaye robbed Ramsey in midfield and galloped towards goal, reversing the ball to Steven Fletcher, but the frequently isolated Scot slashed his left-footed shot wide of the near post.

The impetus shifted further when Jenkinson, booked in the first half, picked up a second yellow card for a late lunge on Stephane Sessegnon. The Benin winger should have carved out an equaliser soon after, but could not find a red and white shirt with his cross.

As the Black Cats flooded forward, bombarding the box with crosses aimed at substitute and home debutant Danny Graham, Arsenal found space on the break. Cazorla released Walcott, but the winger-cum-striker’s dinked finish struck the post and bounced clear.

Arsenal had Wojciech Szczesny to thank for clinging onto three points. First the Pole rushed off his line to save Fletcher’s shot with his legs, then he palmed the Scot’s header behind for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, Fletcher’s poked effort was clawed off the line by the Gunners keeper before Bramble thumped the loose ball high and wide. Arsenal held on, and remains four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham.

Stoke 2–1 Reading: Huth and Jerome secure first league win of the year

    253906hp2.jpg

Second half strikes from Robert Huth and Cameron Jerome gave Stoke City a 2-1 win over Reading, their first win since Boxing Day, and subjected the Royals to their first defeat in eight games.

After a dull first half the second period was littered with goals, the first came from a Stoke corner that Huth rose at the back post to meet and powered his header into the back of the net. Substitute Cameron Jerome doubled the lead with ten minutes to play with a lovely volley before Adrian Mariappa grabbed a consolation for Reading in the closing minutes.

Both managers made one change to their starting lineups with Michael Kightly recalled instead of Geoff Cameron for the Potters, and Nick Blackman was given his first Royals start following his January move from Sheffield United.

The opening half lacked any kind of quality as both sides struggled to find room and create chances to threaten the other goal.

Just after the half hour Matthew Etherington sent a right wing corner curling into towards goal, Federici was able to punch the ball clear but only as far as Ryan Shawcross. The defender flicked at the loose ball but the Australian keeper was able to tip the looping effort over the bar.

Five minutes before the break the best chance of the half fell to Crouch but he too was denied by the Reading goalkeeper. Kightly showed a lovely bit of skill to get him away from two defenders, his chipped ball found Crouch who chested and then volleyed the ball towards goal but Federici was again able to turn it over the crossbar.

The second half started at a much higher tempo and it was the home side who began to exert more pressure. The introduction of Cameron Jerome and Kenwyne Jones gave them a new impetus and the move by Tony Pulis was rewarded minutes later as the home side took the lead.

Just after the hour Jon Walters missed a glaring opportunity but his blushes were spared as from the resulting corner Huth opened the scoring. Glenn Whelan delivered a deep corner to the back post and Huth rose above Alex Pearce to head home, the defenders effort clipping the underside of the crossbar on its way in.

With ten minutes to play the home side added a second goal through Jerome, the striker sending a wonderful strike into the back of the net from near the penalty spot. The striker got a bit of luck as the Reading defence could only head a long ball from the Stoke defense up in the air but he controlled the ball whilst holding off Alex Pearce and thumped the ball past Federici.

The scoring looked to be over but Reading was not beaten just yet and Mariappa gave his side a lifeline minutes later with a neat header. He got in front of his marker at the front post and sent his flicked header past Asmir Begovic.

Tottenham 2-1 Newcastle: Brilliant Bale tightens Spurs’ grip on top four place

    253815hp2.jpg

LONDON -- Gareth Bale once again saved Tottenham with two brilliant goals in a nerve-wracking 2-1 victory over Newcastle at White Hart Lane to boost his side’s chances of a top four finish.

The Welshman continued his stunning recent form to take his tally for the season to 13 Premier League goals with two deadly strikes to take Spurs to third in the table for at least a few hours ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Wigan later today.

Bale put the hosts ahead in the fifth minute with a free-kick from 25 yards before the visitors equalized through Youan Gouffran’s deflected strike in the 24th minute.

Just as Spurs appeared to be running out of ideas, Bale came to the rescue with a fine solo effort 12 minutes from time to extend the Londoners’ fine form to 10 league games unbeaten.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas only named Emmanuel Adebayor as a substitute after the Togolese returned from the African Cup of Nations on Friday evening, meaning the hosts started with no recognized striker with Jermain Defoe sidelined for three weeks with an ankle injury while January signing Lewis Holtby made his first start for the club.

Newcastle, for their part, started with the same line-up that won their previous two matches as they climb the table following a winter spending splurge on the French Ligue 1.

The Tottenham players warmed up wearing ‘get well soon Joe’ t-shirts in support of coach Tony Parks’ son, who was involved in a serious car accident this week.

Before kick-off, two two benches shared warm embraces and friendly words - presumably in both English and French.

But Bale wasted little time in wiping the smiles off the Newcastle players’ faces as he opened the scoring in the fifth minute.

First, Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini conceded a clumsy free-kick for a challenge on Clint Dempsey 25 yards from goal.

Bale has been in sparkling form in recent weeks and he punished the visitors as he whipped the set-piece over the wall Cristiano Ronaldo-style into the bottom corner of Tim Krul’s goal.

While Spurs continued to threaten through Bale and Holtby, Newcastle increasingly grew into the game and - after Papiss Cisse missed the target with a free header from eight yards - Alan Pardew’s side were rewarded for their attacking ambition in the 24th minute.

It was a goal made and converted by two January signings. Moussa Sissoko burst past Kyle Naughton down the right side and had the awareness to pick out Gouffran on the edge of the Tottenham box.

The winger took a touch before shooting powerfully at goal, the ball deflecting heavily off Michael Dawson’s back to leave Hugo Lloris with no chance in the Spurs goal.

The second-half started in pedestrian fashion and the flat atmosphere was not helped by the seemingly serious injury suffered by Gouffran in an innocuous challenge with Kyle Walker. The Frenchman was treated on the pitch for several minutes before and required oxygen as he was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected broken leg.

Spurs brought on Adebayor for the final quarter of the game as Bale shifted into a more central role.

It was a switch that worked as, out of nothing, the Welshman scored his second goal of the game 12 minutes from time.

As the ball bounced between Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor just inside their own half, the Newcastle center backs hesitated and Bale only needed a split second to burst through on goal before slotting the ball through Krul’s legs.

Bale nearly completed a stunning hat-trick three minute from time but Krul kept out his fierce drive with a superb fingertip save.

Yohan Cabaye was then lucky to escape a red card late on for a nasty late challenge on Mousa Dembele while Lloris made a wonderful late save at substitute Shola Ameobi's feet as Spurs held on for another Bale-inspired victory.

Southampton 3-1 Manchester City: Superb Saints leave Mancini's title defense in tatters

    253920hp2.jpg

A two-horse title race is fast turning into a single-thoroughbred procession.
Three defensive howlers from Manchester City, each one of increasing and barely believable ineptitude, helped Southampton romp to a 3-1 win at a rocking St Mary’s Stadium.

Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis took advantage of errors from Gareth Barry and Joe Hart to put the Saints 2-0 up after 23 minutes.Edin Dzeko gave City hope with his 12th league goal of the season shortly before halftime but Barry gave fresh meaning to the term ‘comedy own goal’ with a lethal side-foot into his own net two minutes into the second half.

Vincent Kompany travelled with the City party and was watching from the stands but he was still not fit to return to the 18-man squad. How Mancini must have lamented the absence of his talismanic skipper, firstly when Southampton unlocked the re-jigged City defense in the seventh minute.

Jason Puncheon used his pace to wriggle clear on the right, threaded a neat ball through to Jay Rodriguez, whose shot was well parried by the alert Joe Hart. However, the loose ball fell to Puncheon, who tucked in his seventh goal of the season.City struggled to gain a foothold in the match and a goalkeeping howler midway through the opening period gifted the hosts their second.

Hart’s dip in form has coincided with a national television advert in which he promotes a shampoo, and the entire City staff were left tearing their hair out when he allowed a Rickie Lambert shot headed for his midriff to squirm out of his grasp, between his legs and into the path of the grateful Steven Davis, who tucked it in.
City had been desperately poor for most of the first half but there was no doubt about the quality of the goal which signalled a comeback could be on.

After Dzeko had headed clear a Southampton corner, he raced up the other end to finish off a counterattack that had been beautifully worked until Pabo Zabaleta’s cross was squared behind the Bosnian. Dzeko slipped as he checked his run but somehow managed to get a foot on the ball to stab in his 12th league goal of the season.

Shortly after Puncheon had blazed over the bar, the home side gained further reward for its purpose and attacking intent following a brainfart from Barry. The lively Lambert broke free down the left but his cross should have been comfortably dealt with by Barry, who, under no pressure at all, inexplicably passed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Most observers expected some sort of reaction from City, a late assault on the hosts’ goal or the kind of sustained comeback for which it has become renowned over the last two seasons. But it never really materialized. Southampton drew the sting from the visitors with relative comfort and David Silva was mysteriously removed from the fray by Mancini with 17 minutes remaining.

With the win, Southampton now sits six points clear of the relegation zone. Meanwhile, City's title defense has almost completely disintegrated.

Klopp refuses to blame Dortmund after 'wild' Hamburg defeat

    253468hp2.jpg

The BVB boss remained calm in the face of a heavy loss to HSV, but conceded that Robert Lewandowski's dismissal gave the visitors a crucial momentum
Jurgen Klopp has refused to pin the blame on his Borussia Dortmund players despite seeing them crash to a 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Hamburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski put the German champion in the driving seat early on, but the striker was later sent off, with Artjom Rudnevs' double and two goals from Heung-Min Son condemning BVB to a costly loss.

Speaking after the match, Klopp opted not to criticize his team and instead highlighted the high-octane nature of proceedings, although he did admit that the dismissal of his star man helped Hamburg seize the momentum that eventually proved decisive.

"The game had a lot of stories," Klopp told reporters. "Hamburg, from the outset, came into the game, and after going 2-1 up, the action was hectic and wild in light of Robert Lewandowski's dismissal.

"It was an unhappy ending for us. Our strength and morale diminished against a strong Hamburg."

Benitez delighted with Lampard's goalscoring form but remains coy on his Chelsea future

    248106hp2.jpg

The midfielder continued his purple patch with another fine effort against Wigan prompting his manager to heap praise on the England internationa Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez says he is delighted with Frank Lampard's goalscoring form but maintains that he has no news regarding the midfielder's future.

The England international continued his great run in front of goal with another effort in the Blues' 4-1 win over Wigan at Stamford Bridge.

Benitez heaped praise midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the season, but remained coy as to the Englishman's future beyond this season.

"In the last two months he has scored eight or nine goals, that's really pleasing for me. Lampard is fit, he understands the game, if he scores 20 goals and breaks the record I will be really pleased," he told reporters.

When asked how long the Blues' midfielder can continue playing for he joking replied: "If he is fit for Thursday, I'll be really pleased."

The Chelsea boss says that Chelsea held on to their lead well, during a nervy spell at 2-1 after Shaun Maloney had pulled one back for the visitors, because of the returning personnel which he has missed.

He continued: "The possibility to use different players was much better for us, David Luiz and Eden Hazard [returned] so we could move Ramires to the right side, which was crucial for us because they were playing three at the back.

"After you could change players, play [Juan] Mata, Yossi [Benayoun] and Marko Marin and they could make the difference, before we didn't have these options in some positions. Now we can manage the game in different ways."

The Spaniard also revealed that the Blues had been working on keeping leads in their training sessions, after dropping points from winning positions in recent weeks.

"We were working on the training session about that, the position, the shape of the team and what we have to do," he added.

"Oscar had cramp and Gary Cahill the same, the are playing too many games, but the good thing I'll say again, we can move David Luiz to center back, the last minute we can bring on Juan Mata from the bench, in the past we didn't have this kind of option."

Wenger allays injury fears over Wilshere and Koscielny

    253872hp2.jpg

The Arsenal boss has confirmed that the center back, who withdrew from the matchday squad after aggravating his calf, while the England star was forced off in the second hal Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has moved to allay fears of long-term injury lay-offs to both Jack Wilshere and Laurent Koscielny following the 1-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

Wilshere was bodychecked by Alfred N'Diaye midway through the second half of the game at the Stadium of Light, before being helped from the pitch.

Meanwhile, the center back was a late withdrawal from the matchday squad after aggravating his calf in the warm up.

But Wenger has tempered fears of an extended period on the sidelines for the pair.

"[Koscielny has a] calf problem. We think it's a question of days because he had a positive scan. He limped out with the French national team and we decided to give him a try in the warm up but it was not good enough but I don't think it's long term.

"Jack is a big kick on the thigh, he could not walk. Again it's just a question of four or five days."

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Ronaldo fires warning to Man Utd with formidable hat tricka

Cristiano Ronaldo warmed up for his eagerly anticipated clash against former club Manchester United with an inspirational performance to lead Real Madrid to a 4-1 victory over Sevilla at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

The Portuguese international struck his 20th career Madrid hat trick and assisted another, as los Blancos got back to winning ways in la Liga, after their 1-0 reverse at Granada last weekend.

Ronaldo teed up Karim Benzema to bundle home his 50th Liga goal, before taking matters into his own hands with a stunning second from just outside the box before the half hour mark.

The 28-year-old continued his deadly display in the second half, plundering two more goals prior to his withdrawal to a thunderous ovation. Gonzalo Higuain and Hedwiges Maduro were both sent off before Manu Del Moral scored with two minutes remaining to provide a crumb of consolation for the visitors.

Diego Lopez began in goal against the club he left in January as Jose Mourinho rang the changes, fielding Kaka and Michael Essien in midfield, while Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain were given a rare run out together in the starting XI.

It was not the most enterprising start from either side yet Madrid managed to take the lead 18 minutes in. Ronaldo raced onto a long ball over the top to drill across the six yard box, and Fernando Navarro’s attempts to clear instead played the ball right into Benzema’s path a yard out.Despite not appearing to be 100 percent fit, Ronaldo was the most decisive player on the pitch, and doubled the hosts’ advantage in stunning fashion. A step-over took Maduro out of the equation, and allowed the forward to arrow a fantastic effort inside the far post.

Sevilla finally made significant inroads into Madrid territory just after the half hour mark when Jesus Navas gained a step on Fabio Coentrao out wide, and centred for Jose Reyes, whose low effort was smothered confidently by Lopez.

But it was the best chance of a bland first half for the Andalusians, and Mourinho could have seen his side go out of sight had Beto’s awkward punch out fallen more kindly after Ronaldo’s free kick was too hot to handle. And within seconds of the restart, the game was put to bed. A routine header backwards was misjudged horribly by Federico Fazio, allowing Ronaldo to steal in behind and slot home the home side’s third goal.

Ronaldo was not done, and in electrifying fashion, completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark. After a Reyes free kick was cleared, the Portuguese sprinted the entire length of the pitch, spread to Higuain, continued his run into the box, and knocked the return ball home from close range.

Ronaldo was withdrawn to a rapturous reception from the home fans, and he was soon unwillingly followed off the pitch by Higuain, who was shown his marching orders 66 minutes in after picking up his second yellow card for a late clip on Navarro.Sevilla's numerical advantage lasted barely a quarter of an hour as Maduro was also shown his second booking for a lazy late challenge on Michael Essien just outside the area.

The visitors would pull one back late on with a tidy finish from Manu, but it mattered little as the damage had long been done by the rampaging Ronaldo.
