Leonardo: Paris Saint-Germain better suited to Champions League

    195538hp2.jpg

The director criticised the defensive tactics of Saturday's opponents and feels les Parisiens are made for European competition.Leonardo said Paris Saint-Germain was better suited to Champions League soccer after it fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to Stade de Reims.

A 64th minute strike from Grzegorz Krychowiak condemned Carlo Ancelotti's men to their fifth league defeat of the season, prompting the Parisiens director to suggest their style would yield more success in European competition.

"If we analyse the situation, we can say that we are not made to play these types of games," the Brazilian noted to Infosport. "We're not made for games like that, we're a team made to play in Europe.

"PSG is for Europe, not for France. The playing conditions worked against us while playing against an ultra-defensive team, as did the circumstance we play every three days.

"When games are based on a fight, we do not succeed. We will have to learn how to face games like these though, as they are common here and this [the match against Reims] will not be the last time."

PSG remains top of Ligue 1 and three points ahead of second placed Olympique Lyonnais, though les Gones have a game in hand on the league leader.

The best is yet to come from Kagawa, says Ferguson

    259811hp2.jpg

After netting a hat trick in Manchester United's 4-0 win over Norwich, his boss assured fans that the Japan international will continue to improve after struggling with injury. After the midfielder netted a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Norwich, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Shinji Kagawa will be "far better" next season.

The summer signing, who has struggled with injuries this term, opened the scoring just before half time before coolly adding his second and third in the latter stages of the contest as he became the first Asian player to score a Premier League treble.

And Sir Alex was keen to cite persistent setbacks as the reason behind Kagawa’s slow start at the club, before promising the fans that the best is yet to come from the Japan international.

"It was a brilliant day for him, he is a good finisher. His second goal was composed and intelligent, his last was brilliant," he told reporters. "He missed that period of football in October and November that set him back a bit. He is gradually getting his form back but next year he will be far better, you will see a really good player then."

The 71-year-old boss also spoke of the imminent Champions League encounter with Real Madrid and predicted that both teams would score in what would be a "fantastic night"."It will be a fantastic night, you are talking about two of the greatest clubs in the world. Emotions will be high and I am sure it will be a tremendous match," he continued.

"If we can get a blank against us on Tuesday we would go through. But I think both teams will score. I just hope we get more than them."

Alba: My gesture was in support of Messi

    258910hp2.jpg

The fullback insists his celebration was meant to hail the Argentine's brilliance and not to provoke the home supporters.Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has dismissed allegations that he made an offensive gesture while celebrating Lionel Messi's goal during their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday.

The 23-year-old's actions in the aftermath of the strike have come under scrutiny following a game already marred by the dismissal of Victor Valdes after the full-time whistle, but he was quick to defend his conduct.

"I used my index finger to show that Messi is the best in the world, and that he deserves the praise," Alba insisted to reporters. "My gesture to the fans wasn't bad.

"A draw would have been the fairest result, but we need to leave this behind and focus on the matches against Deportivo and AC Milan.

"We left without any points, but know we still have a good advantage over Atletico and Real Madrid. We have to give it our all and even more so against Milan. We have confidence in ourselves."

Gerard Pique also revealed his disappointment and called for the team to improve significantly after suffering a second Clasico defeat in the space of a week.

"When you come to the Bernabeu, you have to be very superior to Madrid in order to win," the Spain international lamented. "We have to give a lot more of ourselves. We weren't fluid like we usually are and we’re missing certain things. While we've had these bad moments when we won plenty of titles, we still have to end this poor streak as soon as possible.

"I don’t think it’s the right moment to criticize our style of play though, we've secured a lot of good results with it. We have the right team to get out of this situation. We’re confident that we’ll eliminate Milan, but first we have to defeat Deportivo."

AC Milan 3-0 Lazio: Pazzini double raises Rossoneri into Champions League positions

    259890hp2.jpg

AC Milan remains undefeated in Serie A in 2013 as it powered past a lackluster Lazio side in a 3-0 rout, courtesy of a double by Giampaolo Pazzini.

Antonio Candreva was sent off in the 17th minute and although the Rossoneri dominated, it took them until the 40th minute to take the lead through Pazzini. Kevin-Prince Boateng added a second before the break and Pazzini returned to round off the scoring sending Milan above their opponents and into third position.

It did not always look like it was going to be Milan's night though as they saw two great chances kept out of the net within the opening five minutes.

Stephan El Shaarawy was the first to threaten, latching on to a loose ball in the area only to be thwarted by Federico Marchetti at the near post.

The 20-year-old remained at the heart of the action and just moments later he knocked the ball past the keeper and was pulled down by Marchetti. It could well have been a penalty yet nothing was awarded and Boateng's attempt to finish the move was cleared off the line by Giuseppe Biava.

Vladimir Petkovic's team were clearly struggling to deal with El Shaarawy and that task became even more daunting in the 16th minute. The striker skipped inside of Biava and was felled on the edge of the area by Antonio Candreva who was subsequently dismissed.

The red card served to entrench the Rossoneri's dominance, but the opening goal remained elusive. A brilliant Mattia De Sciglio cross from the left was narrowly missed by Boateng and Pazzini before bending just outside of the post.

Pazzini continued to get into dangerous areas and he finally got his reward in the 40th minute. Stefan Radu's poor clearance was struck straight back at goal by Ignazio Abate and, although Marchetti was equal to it, the striker poked the rebound into the back of the net.

Milan then doubled their lead before the half time as Boateng tucked the ball away after Marchetti had done brilliantly to keep out Pazzini's original header.

The Biancocelesti attempted to work their way back into the game in the second half but were struggling to get any convincing efforts away.

However, any hopes of a potential fightback were dashed on the hour mark as another awful attempt at a clearance from Radu fell to Pazzini. The striker rolled the ball out of his feet and then lashed a thunderous 25-yard strike past Marchetti and into the bottom corner.

A fourth should well have followed soon after but Pazzini failed to complete his hat trick as he sliced a volley wide of the goal and after the striker was substituted, leaving the field to a rapturous ovation, El Shaarawy saw his curling effort fly just outside of the far post in the 70th minute.

The game lost its momentum as time wound down but M'Baye Niang was denied the perfect cap for an impressive substitute appearance as his shot from the top of the box scraped the top of the bar with a helpess Marchetti watching on.

Victory sees Milan leapfrog Lazio into third position, and subsequently a Champions League qualification spot, with just 11 games remaining this season.

Revealed: Valdes' foul-mouthed rant at referee Perez Lasa

    259819hp2.jpg

The Barcelona goalkeeper was shown a red card for protesting after his side's 2-1 loss at Real Madrid, furious at the official's decision not to award a late penalty to Adriano Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes could face a lengthy ban for verbally abusing referee Miguel Angel Perez Lasa after Saturday's Clasico clash against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Valdes was furious at the official's decision not to award a late penalty to his side following a challenge from Sergio Ramos on Adriano and protested angrily after the final whistle.

Although further from the action than any other player on the pitch, Valdes protested more vehemently than any of his teammates and had to be restrained by a member of the club's staff.

Shouting angrily in the referee's face, Valdes was shown a yellow card but continued to protest until Perez Lasa produced a red moments later.

According to the referee's report, Valdes verbally insulted the official, shouting: "You [the officials] s**t yourselves [by not awarding a penalty against Madrid at the Bernabeu], you have no shame."

And Perez Lasa claimed the 'keeper, who will leave Barcelona when his contract expires in 2014, kept on repeating: "You have no shame."

The referee's full report reads as follows: "Once the game was over and while were still on the field of play, I booked Barcelona player, No. 1, Victor Valdes Arribas, for squaring up to me with his arms aloft and his voice shouting, recriminating one of my decisions. I then sent off the same player for shouting repeatedly in my face, from just a few centimetres: 'You [the officials] s**t yourselves, you have no shame.'

"After he was sent off, the same player persisted with his attitude and kept on saying, in the same tone: 'You have no shame.' He had to be restrained by his teammates and a delegate from his club. Once we were in the tunnel, the same player persisted with his attitude and repeated the same thing as he had before, still shouting: 'You have no shame, you have no shame.'"

Meanwhile, Gerard Pique stoked the flames after the game by saying: "I hope Perez Lasa apologizes next time he referees one of our games."

Real defender Ramos was handed by a five-game ban by Spain's football federation (RFEF) for insulting referee Miguel Angel Ayza Gamez in a match against Celta Vigo in January and Valdes could now face a similar sanction.

Benitez brushes off Chelsea fans' boos

    259753hp2.jpg

The Spaniard congratulated the Blues' fans for their "really positive" support of the team during Saturday's 1-0 win over West Brom, while underlining his want to see out his deal Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has brushed off boos aimed in his direction during his team's 1-0 victory over West Brom.

The Spaniard claimed in midweek that sections of the Blues support were creating an uncomfortable atmosphere at matches because of their opposition to his role as interim manager at the club.

However, following Saturday’s win, Benitez instead highlighted the crowd’s positive effect of the team despite a number of banners calling for his immediate removal.

When asked about the reaction of certain supporters, Benitez told reporters: "What you can see is the players playing with more confidence and the fans behind the team. Again I will not say too much about that, but it was really good and really positive.

He added, "I'll say I'm really pleased with the fans who were behind the team. The players played with more confidence, it was clear and it was really positive. The team is doing well and I will continue to work very hard, that is the only way."
Benitez also hit out at owner Roman Abramovich for the “massive mistake” in naming him as ‘interim’ manager on Wednesday, insisting it undermines his position. But he underlined his determination to see out his current deal until the end of the season.

"I am contracted to the end of the season, that is the only thing. The way I approach my job is to be ready for the next game," Benitez said.
