Malaga 2-0 Porto (Agg. 2-1): Isco and Santa Cruz complete fabulous turnaround

Malaga ensured progression to the last eight of the Champions League as it overcame Porto 2-0, which was forced to play much of the second half with 10 men, at La Roselada.

The Andalusians suffered their first ever defeat in European competition in the first leg, but a sublime goal from Isco levelled the tie at halftime. The hosts dominated the second half as Steven Defour was shown a red card in the 49th minute and Roque Santa Cruz finally secured the win with a header 13 minutes from time.

There was very little to separate the two teams at the Dragao three weeks ago and it was clear that the return leg would follow suit within 10 minutes of kick off, but neither Joaquin or Danilo managed to test the opposing keeper from decent positions.

The tackles were heated and quality was in short supply but in the 36th minute Helton, who had largely remained untested until this point, produced a great save to keep Antunes' arrowed shot out of the top corner.

It was the start of a good spell for Los Boquerones, and they thought they had taken the lead through Saviola in the 39th minute. However, the goal was ruled due to a collision between Julio Baptista and Helton, though the former Arsenal man looked to have been pushed into the keeper.

But Malaga did not have much longer to wait for a moment to cheer as Isco scored a sensational goal. The Spaniard was afforded too much space 20 yards from goal and he used it to devastating effect as he clipped a brilliant cross-goal shot into the far corner.

The Dragoes' hopes of progression took a severe blow early in the second half as Defour picked up his second yellow card for an idiotic challenge on Joaquin.

Malaga did not rush to find a second goal, and it was not until the 57th minute that it came close again. Isco's cross was sent straight to Saviola by a poor clearance from Nicolas Otamendi but the center back got across to block his compatriot's effort on goal.

Manuel Pellegrini's men allowed the game to go stale and were almost punished as a result: Jackson Martinez was agonizingly close to converting James Rodriguez's free kick 15 minutes from time.

The Andalusians heeded their warning and found the decisive second goal three minutes later as Santa Cruz rose highest to head in from Isco's corner.

Porto did get the ball in the back of the net moments later through Maicon, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

It proved to be Porto's final chance to remain in the competition and Malaga ended a run of four games without a win to book its spot in the quarterfinals in its first-ever Champions League campaign.

Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal (Agg 3-3) : Gunners restore pride despite away goal exit

    mikelartetapost-match20130313_576x324.jpg

MUNICH -- Arsenal exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the third consecutive year despite beating Bayern Munich 2-0 in the second leg.

Olivier Giroud stunned the 68,000 sell-out Allianz Arena with a third-minute goal to give the visitors hope of pulling off a Munich miracle.

Despite Bayern dominating for most of the match, Arsenal held firm at the back and Laurent Koscielny’s 84th-minute header equaled the scores on aggregate.

This set up a pulsating finale but Arsenal was unable to score the one further goal required to overturn the 3-1 first-leg deficit and complete one of the greatest two-legged turnarounds in the competition’s history.

The runaway Bundesliga leaders closed out the match to progress into the quarterfinals courtesy of the away goals rule.

The two-legged defeat means that Bayern becomes the third European superhouse in three years to knock Arsenal out at the last-16 juncture, following Barcelona in 2011 and AC Milan in 2012.

Reports that Wenger would concede the match and play a weakened team proved to be misguided, as the Frenchman selected his best available starting X1. He made five changes from the first leg, with injured trio Jack Wilshere, Lukas Podolski and Bacary Sagna replaced by Tomas Rosicky, Olivier Giroud and Carl Jenkinson, and regulars Thomas Vermaelen and Wojiech Szczesny axed in favor of Kieran Gibbs and Lukasz Fabianski.

It took just three minutes for Arsenal to give its 3,000 traveling fans hope with a quite splendidly constructed opening goal.

A series of cute passes from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Rosicky sent Theo Walcott bursting clear from the right, and his slammed cross-shot into the six-yard box was bundled into the net from two yards by Giroud.

Suddenly, the Allianz Arena was quiet. The home side was initially frazzled, almost as if it could not comprehend that its English visitors could be so presumptuous at this German cathedral.

Bayern gradually began to dominate possession, with Javi Martinez, Thomas Muller and Luiz Gustavo all going close to scoring a first-half equalizer.

But this was not the same mighty Bayern of three weeks ago, the team that was so commanding at Emirates Stadium that many pundits ranked it as the favorite to win this season’s competition.

It was almost as if the Jupp Heynckes’ men did not want to press their foot fully on the accelerator in case they left themselves open to the sucker-punch.

At the end of a first half which Wenger might have concluded went according to plan, his team still needed to score two more goals and not to concede to progress against the odds to the quarterfinals.

Arsenal struggled to get a foothold in the game after break. Cazorla and Walcott continued to be the trump cards but some of the visitors’ midfield passing was wonky and Giroud lacked the velvet touch to hold the ball up and bring others into play.

Bayern continued to exert most of the pressure, with Arjen Robben’s weaving runs from the right flank causing particular consternation to the defensive ranks.

Arsenal made a double substitution after 72 minutes, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho replacing Aaron Ramsey and Walcott, and Wenger’s team immediately began to commit more men forward.

Gervinho and Giroud both had half-chances but could not force Manuel Neuer into a save, while at the other end Fabianski made a string of acrobatic saves.

Koscielny's late header from an Oxlade-Chamberlain corner set up a thrilling finale, but Arsenal were exhausted and unable to create any late chances to score what would have been a remarkable third.

Premier League's failure in Champions League 'a big wake-up call', warns Wenger

The tournament's quarterfinals contain no English teams for the first time since 1996 and the Arsenal boss is wary of the top flight's future in European football
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Premier League has fallen behind the rest of Europe's domestic leagues, with the Champions League quarterfinals containing no English clubs for the first time since 1996.

The Gunners became the last British club to be eliminated in the last 16 after Manchester United and Celtic were beaten by Real Madrid and Juventus respectively with Chelsea and Manchester City having already been dumped out in the group stages.

The Frenchman's side was beaten by last season's finalist Bayern Munich on away goals, in spite of a brave performance in the Allianz Arena which saw it level the tie at 3-3, having trailed 3-1 from the first leg.

"It is a big wake-up call," Wenger told Sky Sports. "It means that the rest of European football has caught back on us and means we need to consider in the Premier League what we have to do to improve."

Turkish club Galatasaray and Spanish side Malaga are two surprise sides in the last eight after Cim Bom shocked German club Schalke and Manuel Pellegrini's side saw off 2004 winners Porto.

Hiddink hints at Premier League return

    144669hp2.jpg

The former interim Chelsea manager reveals that he is open-minded about a coming back to England but insists that he is enjoying being in charge of Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala Anzhi Makhachkala manager Guus Hiddink has revealed that he would be keen to return to the Premier League, though insists that he is enjoying his role in Russia.

The 66-year-old, who had a brief stint in the hotseat at Chelsea in 2008-09, has been rumored to be on Roman Abramovich's shortlist to succeed the outgoing Rafa Benitez this summer.

The Dutchman, who takes his free-spending Anzhi to Newcastle on Thursday evening to fight for a place in the last eight of the Europa League, says that he is open-minded about a permanent return to English soil.

"I don't know because I'm not the youngest anymore, although I feel still very energetic and I love to be on the pitch almost every day with the guys," he told reporters. "There is energy left, but I never can predict my future because a big part of the future is already behind me.

"I'd like to add a little sentence to that because it does seem in my answer that I'm not having a lot of joy in my current job, which is not true, I love the job which I am doing now.

"Anzhi are coming internationally from a small club. Within one year, the club image has increased a lot, the seriousness within the club and the way we are trying to play has given me also a lot of energy."

The Moscow-based club heads to Tyneside with the tie delicately poised following a goalless draw in Russia and Hiddink revealed he missed the Premier League on the eve of his clash with Alan Pardew's outfit.

He added: "I enjoyed very much the Premier League, of course and in my Chelsea time, we played here and had a good result.

"Overall, the Premier League is what every player likes to do and also the managers and coaches, they like to work in the big leagues, of course."

Wenger 'proud' of Arsenal despite Champions League exit

The Gunners pulled off an unlikely 2-0 win against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, but a poor 3-1 defeat at home in the first leg has ultimately cost them Despite winning 2-0 against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night Arsenal was knocked out of the Champions League on away goals, but the club's manager Arsene Wenger praised his side’s resilience.

The Gunners took the lead within the first three minutes at the Allianz Arena, as Olivier Giroud tapped in from close range before Laurent Koscielny leveled the aggregate score four minutes from time.

Bayern’s three goals scored at the Emirates Stadium meant it scraped through by the virtue of away goals, but Wenger praised his men’s display and was happy they showed that they at least deserved to be there.

"I am very proud of the team but very disappointed for everyone who follows Arsenal that we didn't get the third goal," Wenger told reporters.

"Qualifying is 180 minutes but our first 90 was not our best. I believe it was very possible to knock Bayern out. Overall, at least we have shown we deserved to be there."

Last season’s Champions League exit came under similar circumstances as the Gunners almost eradicated AC Milan’s four-goal lead from the first leg, and Wenger admits that once again a poor showing in the first meeting has proved costly.

"It is a bit similar to last year against Milan," he added. “The regret is not tonight. The regret is the first leg at home.

“We were under pressure tonight. A bad performance tonight could have been terrible for the morale of the team and pressure as well."

Bayern escaped with a 'black eye', says Heynckes

The coach of the Bavarian giants confessed his team was fortunate to reach the Champions League quarterfinals and openly disapproved of its below-par performance Jupp Heynckes has criticized his Bayern Munich side after it suffered a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League last-16 second leg.

Despite the loss the Bavarian giants progressed to the quarterfinals on the away goals rule and only suffered a bruised ego rather than elimination, but the coach admitted things did not go as planned.

"I think altogether we have to be critical of our performance today. At the end, we did get away with a black eye, however," Heynckes told ZDF.

"That early goal made us lose our concept and rhythm a bit. I would not say we were surprised, but we were not really up to it, especially during the first half.

"We never played as calm, as we usually do. This game should be an instructive example for us: You have never reached the next round, until the match is played."

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said his side was fortunate to have qualified on the back of its first-leg performance and added the absences of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery were certainly felt.

"It was a difficult match tonight and we lost 2-0. We are lucky we won the first leg and that makes us go through," he said.

"This might me a warning for us in the Champions League. The stakes are high and you have to be humble."

"It was definitive noticeable [that Schweinsteiger and Ribery were missing], since our game was not as well-structured as it usually is."

Arjen Robben also voiced his opinion that die Roten underperformed and echoed Rummenigge's sentiments that they must heed the warning from the defeat.

He added: "We shouldn't have allowed this to happen. Arsenal had nothing to lose. We should have put up more of a fight. Maybe this was a wake-up call for us."

Mourinho: Winning Champions League will not determine my fate

    255107hp2.jpg

The Real Madrid coach says neither winning or losing the Champions League will have a bearing on any decision he makes regarding his future at the Liga champions
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has dismissed suggestions he hopes to win the Champions League at Wembley in May before walking off into the arms of a new club in the summer.

The Blancos' coach left Porto and Inter respectively in the wake of lifting European club football's most important prize.

However, the Portuguese has denied speculation he would be content to repeat the narrative with the Liga holders at the end of this season.

"I never base my decisions on whether I win or not," Mourinho told The Sun.

"I work at the top level every day, thinking only about the club and never worrying about myself."

The 50-year-old trainer has been linked with a move to Manchester City or a possible return to Chelsea and has never hidden his affection for the Premier League.

Madrid has put up a poor defense of its Liga title this term, with Mourinho's future also made uncertain by reported disagreements with senior players such as club captain Iker Casillas.

Stramaccioni: My future will be decided at the end of season

    260200hp2.jpg

The Nerazzurri coach feels that individual results will not decide whether he will stay at the club as his side prepares to face Tottenham.

Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni feels that defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League will not spell the end of his time at the club.

The Italians trail Andre Villas-Boas’ side 3-0 from the first leg at White Hart Lane, but the Nerazzurri trainer feels that an exit at the hands of the Premier League outfit will not mean he will be sacked.

“My future will be decided by the results at the end of the campaign, not by one game,” he told reporters. “I've always had the president’s backing, but he is in charge and can make whatever decisions he wants. I think that my work will be judged at the end of the season and not now.

"I never give up, I’m focused and giving everything that I have.”Inter has lost its last two games and has just one win in four, but the 37-year-old insists he is concentrating solely on the clash with Spurs.

“We have to just think about this game. The 3-0 will be hard to overturn, but we want to win. We’ll also need a little bit of luck," he added. “We’ll give it all we have got. Our squad is limited, but we want to honor the game. Tottenham have an awful lot of quality. We'll try to contain them and we'll see how well we manage that tomorrow.”

    Benitez rues busy Chelsea schedule

The Chelsea boss may opt to rotate his squad from the side that clawed back an FA Cup replay at Old Trafford but will not be underestimating the caliber of Steaua Bucharest Rafael Benitez is looking for his side to bounce back from its disappointing away defeat to Steaua Bucharest last week but admits Chelsea’s packed schedule is making team selection a tricky task.

Chelsea was narrowly edged out 1-0 in the first leg of its last-16 Europa League tie on Thursday and Benitez will look to utilize the home advantage to pip the Romanians to a quarterfinal berth at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

But with progression will come more game time, and when stacked on top of the FA Cup replay clash with Manchester United on April 1, Benitez admits that an increasingly bloated schedule is providing him with a few headaches.

“I can do nothing about that so I must concentrate on my job and try to do my best preparing the team for every competition,” he told reporters.

“It is difficult. Some players like center backs and goalkeepers can play more games. Wingers, full backs, strikers, it is more difficult because of the intensity of their runs.

"It depends on the players. If you have a player who is fit and recovers quickly it is easier than someone who is older and needs more time. You have to analyze everything and decide what to do."

But ahead of the side’s crunch clash against Steaua, Benitez insists that he will field as strong a side as it takes to progress to the quarterfinals.

“The next game is the priority. I have to pick the team for the next game and ensure it's a very competitive team for each competition,” he added.

Xavi ruled out of Rayo fixture

    263062hp2.jpg

The playmaker suffered a knock in the aftermath of the Catalans' win against AC Milan on Tuesday and will now miss this weekend's match against Rayo.

Barcelona will be without the services of Xavi for Saturday's Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano after the midfielder picked up a thigh strain.

The 33-year-old featured for the entirety of the Blaugrana's 4-0 Champions League last-16 victory over AC Milan on Tuesday but felt discomfort in his right leg in the aftermath of proceedings at Camp Nou.

He underwent tests on Wednesday to determine the full extent of the setback, and they showed an inflammation of the World Cup winner's biceps femoris muscle.

Xavi had only just returned from a hamstring injury - which threw his availability for the European encounter with the Rossoneri into doubt - and must now sit out the visit of the capital club this weekend weekend.

Deschamps: Juventus lack a real top striker

    228840hp2.jpg

The 44-year-old has highlighted the lack of a great striker as one of the Bianconeri's weaknesses as they aim for Champions League glory.

France coach Didier Deschamps feels that the absence of a recognized top striker could hurt Juventus' chances in the Champions League this term.

The Serie A champions have long been in the hunt for a world-class attacker, but chased players such as Edinson Cavani, Stevan Jovetic and Fernando Llorente - who will join on a Bosman move this summer - without success ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.

"All the great teams need a real top striker in order to win in Europe. My Juventus had attackers like [Gianluca] Vialli and [Alessandro] Del Piero, while strikers such as [Christian] Vieri and [Filippo] Inzaghi scored a lot as well," Deschamps told Tuttosport.

He added, "Manchester United now have [Robin] van Persie, Real Madrid have Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bayern Munich have [Mario] Gomez and [Mario] Mandzukic. That's the situation at the big teams. These are attackers who can be decisive for the team. When the team is in trouble, they can make the difference and turn a scoreless draw into a 1-0 win."

Deschamps was part of the last Juventus squad that won the Champions League in 1996.

Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois eyeing third loan spell at Atletico Madrid

The Belgian keeper helped the Spanish side reach the Copa del Rey final and hopes to spend another campaign at the Vicente Calderon Stadium rather than return to Stamford Bridge Thibaut Courtois has revealed his desire to stay with Atletico Madrid next season instead of returning to parent club Chelsea.

The Belgian has spent the last two campaigns with the club from the Spanish capital, winning both the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in addition to reaching the Copa del Rey final in what has been an extremely successful spell.

Courtois has yet to make an appearance for his parent club, who signed him from Jupiler Pro League side Genk in 2011, and the 21-year-old revealed that he is in no hurry to return to Stamford Bridge and play second fiddle to first-choice shot-stopper Petr Cech.

"Everyone knows I like it here and, if I can, I want to stay," he told The Daily Mirror.

However, Courtois, who set a new club record after going 820 minutes without conceding a goal before Sunday's 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad, knows his future is out of his hands.
"I am happy, I like my life here, my teammates. It is not just my decision, Chelsea and Atletico also have to talk," Courtois insisted.

:cool:Manchester United to spend 500,000 pounds on new Old Trafford pitch

    260997hp2.jpg

The Premier League leaders have played on the same grass for six years, but will need to replace it at the end of the season after it became boggy over the Christmas period Manchester United will spend 500,000 pounds this summer to relay its worn out Old Trafford pitch.

Sir Alex Ferguson has requested new grass after the current turf became sunken and boggy during the course of the season, particularly over the Christmas period.

United has already spent around 500,000 pounds in recent years trying to keep its existing pitch in good shape, including patchwork repairs over the last few months.

A hybrid pitch, made up of synthetics and grass, will be installed by Dutch company Desso the day after United's final home match of the campaign against Swansea on May 12 and will take two-and-a-half months to bed in.

Desso is a market leader and has provided the current pitch at Wembley as well as Premier League rivals Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.

The high stands at Old Trafford prevent a large amount of sun access and groundsman Tony Sinclair has been using sun lamps on the pitch at every opportunity.

But Ferguson recently criticized the quality of the surface, saying that it was too heavy for midfielder Darren Fletcher to play on as he battles back to fitness after a chronic bowel condition.

"The pitches over the last few weeks have not suited Darren," Ferguson said in January. "They are really heavy pitches. Unfortunately, Old Trafford seems to have collapsed in the last two weeks."

He added, "We have had six great years out of the pitch. Our groundsman, Tony Sinclair, has done a fantastic job. But it is looking tired now and I think we will have a new pitch in the summer."

Rodgers targeting ‘three or four' summer signings for Liverpool

    250210hp2.jpg

The Reds boss is keen to add depth to his squad but is only interested in bringing in players of a certain grade as the Reds look to challenge at the top of the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool will be looking to sign "three or four players" when it attempts to strengthen the squad this summer.

The Reds are currently in a rich vein of form, winning their last three Premier League games on the bounce - scoring 13 goals in the process - with only Manchester United and Tottenham picking up more points since the start of December. Rodgers believes the January additions of Daniel Sturridge and Phillippe Coutinho have been key to this revival, and insists further quality additions in the summer could see the club competing at the top again.

"It is quality we are after now, not quantity," he told reporters. "We see the impact of Coutinho, and Sturridge’s quality, in January. That’s what we’re looking for. If we bring in another three or four players of that quality, add that to what we have got, then we have got a strong squad that can compete.

"You look at what we have done this season, and the progression is there to see. In our first 14 games, we were only 12th in the table, but our last 14 we are third best - and that is what we expected. It was all about the players bedding in and coming to terms to what we are after, and that takes time. I think you can see we are getting there now, and we have a really strong squad already."Ideally, in terms of squad numbers, I’m looking that we have between 20 and 22 - two players in every position and your three goalkeepers."

Rodgers was frustrated in his attempts to bring Clint Dempsey to Anfield last summer, but believes the new recruitment staff at Liverpool will help ensure he enjoys a more productive window this time around.

"What is important is there is a lot of terrific work going on behind the scenes with the scouting department getting those lists together, we never had that last summer," he continued. "What I didn't want to do was to waste the club’s money. We did not have the time to be extensive in our research - and that was the big issue.

"We are much better placed now. There is great collaboration that goes on between all the departments. January was a productive window for us and hopefully, if we do similar in the summer, then it’s going to be a real good place for us."
