I believed we were going to complete the comeback, says Terim

The Galatasaray boss says he was proud of the way in which his players, and the club's fans, rattled one of the top sides in the world and nearly pulled off a miracle comeback.

Galatasaray boss Faith Terim has admitted that he believed his side was going to overturn a four-goal deficit during the second leg of its Champions League quarterfinal tie against Real Madrid.

Having being beaten 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu last week, the Turkish champions were dealt what looked like a knockout blow when Cristiano Ronaldo netted an away goal for Los Blancos in Istanbul.

However, Galatasaray staged a sensational second-half fightback, striking three times through Emmanuel Eboue, Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba, and thought they had levelled matters on aggregate when the latter netted again, only to be ruled offside.

"When it went 3-1," Terim told NTV Spor, "Yes, I started to think of going through to the semifinals. It had not been the case up until that moment.

"But especially just after Drogba's disallowed goal, that was the the moment when we really believed it."

Unfortunately for the hosts, there was to be no coming back from that disappointment, and Ronaldo netted again in injury time to put the outcome beyond all doubt. Terim still had nothing but praise for his players and their supporters.

"Incredible supporters and an incredible atmosphere - it makes me happy that we played with such passion and gave them such pleasure," Terim said. "We must say thanks to [Jose] Mourinho and Real Madrid. He came to our dressing room to congratulate our players.

"I must also congragulate my players, as they've beaten one of the most powerful teams in the world.

"From the very beginning my aim was to create a Galatasaray that would honor their supporters. I see this happening today. I'm happy to have kept my promise."

Madrid now progresses to the last four where it is joined by Borussia Dortmund, who overcame Malaga 3-2 on aggregate with a late comeback of its own.

Galatasaray didn't have 11 men, they had 50,000, says Mourinho

The Portuguese coach highlighted the affect of the vibrant Turk Telecom Arena faithful as Los Blancos progressed to the semifinal of the Champions League despite losing 3-2.Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has complimented the Galatasaray crowd in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg clash between the Spanish and Turkish champions on Tuesday.

Los Blancos were entering the match with a three-goal lead from the first leg and even struck early in the second when Cristiano Ronaldo redirected a cross home after just seven minutes.

But a raucous crowd in the Turk Telecom Arena propelled the home side to a 3-1 lead in the second half thanks to goals from Emmanuel Eboue, Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba before Ronaldo put the tie away with his second, and the Portuguese coach has conceded that the home crowd played a part in proceedings.

“[Galatasaray] did not play with 11 men today,” Mourinho told reporters following the match. "They played with 50,000 men. In this kind of match we had everything to lose but nothing to gain.”The former Chelsea and Inter coach then highlighted the importance of looking to the next round in the competition, and insisted that whatever team they face will undoubtedly be a quality opposition.

“Now we have a semi to play, against a great team,” Mourinho said. ”We do not know which one yet, but they will be great. It will be hard but now is the time to enjoy ourselves and not to be nervous or afraid.”

The draw for the semifinals will take place Friday, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund to be joined by one of Barcelona/Paris Saint-Germain and one of Bayern Munich/Juventus.

Klopp: Everybody was close to a heart attack

The 45-year-old coach was overcome with emotion after his side's sensational 3-2 victory over Malaga, with the Germans striking twice in injury time to win an epic encounter Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp was at a loss to describe, or indeed explain, the nature of his side's dramatic progression to the semifinals of the Champions League at the expense of Malaga on Wednesday night.

The Germans appeared dead and buried when Eliseu struck to put the visitors 2-1 ahead on the night, and on aggregate, with just eight minutes remaining of an epic second-leg clash at Signal Iduna Park.

However, Marco Reus made it 2-2 in the first minute of injury time before Felipe Santana scrambled home the most sensational of late winners to spark delirium in Dortmund.

“I can't explain this,” Klopp confessed to Sky Sport. “Yet I was a witness, too! Everybody was close to a heart attack at the end! This is what football should be like, this is the most positive side of football.

“Of course, on the other hand, I feel sorry for Malaga, they gave their everything.”

Klopp conceded that his side had performed poorly for the majority of an absorbing quarter-final contest, speculating that the enormity of the occasion may have got to his players.

“For the first time this year we showed nerves,” he conceded. “We were uninspired and played without movement. Malaga defended well but, on the other hand, we were easy to defend against.

"But with this morale that we have, you have to acknowledge that we have progressed deservedly. We just put all our eggs in one basket and we kept going, even after we missed incredible chances.

“Malaga is a very good team but when we just played the ball forward somehow, it eventually worked.”

Dortmund is joined in the final four by former group rivals Real Madrid, which overcame Galatasaray 5-3 on aggregate.

Conte: Juventus must change style against Bayern

The Bianconeri boss thinks his side has to change the way it plays if it is to overturn a 2-0 deficit to Bayern Munich and advance to the Champions League semifinals.Juventus coach Antonio Conte has said that his team will have to approach the Champions League quarterfinal second leg in a different manner as it did to the first against Bayern Munich.

The Serie A leader lost 2-0 in Germany to the newly crowned Bundesliga champion and has to overturn the deficit if it is to progress to the semifinals.

“They showed all their strength in the first leg. We have the desire and the serenity to face this second leg, but we also want to play differently to the way we played last week,” Conte said at his pre-match press conference. "We'll try to play like Juve, aware that we're playing a very strong Bayern, but this gives us even more stimulation and even more motivation to try to pull it off."Conte added that Juventus is well on its way to replicating the success Bayern has had in recent years and is looking to emulate the German giant.

"If you want to find a skyscraper which is already constructed, then that is Bayern. Let’s say that we are a third of the way to building our own skyscraper,” Conte said.

Iniesta: Messi is 'fundamental' to Barcelona

The Blaugrana playmaker believes the Argentina international is needed if the club is to win trophies, however, he is confident the team can overcome PSG without him.Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta says Lionel Messi is an integral part of the team and his teammates depend on him.

The Argentina international picked up a hamstring injury in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against PSG shortly after he put the Catalans ahead and is a doubt to play in the second leg with the score finely poised at 2-2.
"We will see today [Tuesday] and tomorrow if Leo Messi can play. It all depends on how he feels. They will decide if he can play or not,” Iniesta said during a press conference. “He sustained an injury so they need to talk to take a decision.

"Without a doubt, there is Messi dependence in the team in the sense that he's a fundamental player, but then there's no Messi dependence because we're a team and lots of players can score goals. We need to reach June with all the options to win titles. Leo is a fundamental and decisive player for us. He's the No.1.”Meanwhile, Iniesta also hailed the impact of Cesc Fabregas, who netted his first hat trick of his career in the 5-0 demolition of Mallorca on Saturday.

"I am lucky enough to have such a complete player alongside me as Cesc," he continued. "He helps my game and the team's performance. He interprets exactly where his teammates are on the pitch and that's fundamental.

"He interprets our game perfectly well. He played at a very high level when he left the club and now we are fortunate enough to have him back here. I hope he carries on playing as well as he is until the end of the season and he helps us win titles."The 28-year-old is not underestimating the threat Paris Saint-Germain carries. but insists if Barca plays to its best then the Spanish club should win.

"PSG are very fast when it comes to reaching our penalty area," he said. "They have technically very good players, a very complete squad with a lot of talent.
"We have to take all that into account, but we just have to do our job. If we play well, the opposition will suffer and we will have a good chance of winning the match."

Long-term absentee Eric Abidal made his comeback at the weekend following a liver transplant in April last year and Iniesta was delighted to have the Frenchman back playing.

"It was incredible to see Éric Abidal back on the pitch," the midfielder said of his teammate. "It made our hair stand on end, as you say. It was a unique moment.
"He's an example for many people who might be going through difficult moments. To see someone like Abi, who is back playing football after everything he's been through, is incredible. He's a great example for all those people who could need an example like him."

Milan's Mario Balotelli handed three-game ban

    270636hp2.jpg

The Milan striker had already received a one-match suspension, but has been given an additional two following abusive comments he made to an official in the Fiorentina encounter.

AC Milan’s Mario Balotelli has been handed a three-match ban for his conduct during the team’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina on Sunday. The Rossoneri have said they will appeal the decision.

The former Manchester City striker picked up an automatic one-match suspension for his fifth yellow card of since returning to Italy in January, but has had an extra two games added to the ban because of insulting comments made towards the match officials. He will now miss Milan’s match against Napoli next weekend as well as encounters against league leader Juventus and Catania.

Balotelli is also set to be fined by the club after he was caught smoking in the toilet of the train taking the team to the match in Florence.

Reus: Barcelona the favorite for the Champions League

The Dortmund star believes the Liga leader is the front runner to win this year's tournament but his club, which has not lifted the trophy since 1997, has a good chance.Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus has said that Barcelona is the favorite to win this season’s Champions League.

The Blaugrana drew their quarterfinal first leg 2-2 away to Paris Saint-Germain while Reus' side drew 0-0 in Spain against Malaga.Barca looked as though the club was going to become unstuck against a resilient Milan side in the last 16, but the 23-year-old insists the Catalan giant has demonstrated that the team has what it takes to win the prestigious trophy.

"Barcelona play really good football. They're capable of creating much space, even against teams who defend with 11 players,” he told Die Welt. "Therefore, Barcelona are the favorites to win the Champions League."

The Germany international added that his team is one of the most difficult to play against and, given its results in the competition so far, could go all the way.
"[However,] we're the most unpleasant opponent. We play attractively and offensively," Reus continued. "We're still unbeaten in this Champions League season. That says a lot. But we haven't achieved anything yet and want more."

Alderweireld interested in Anfield move - 'Liverpool meets my criteria'

    259871hp2.jpg

The 24-year-old Ajax defender has opened the door to a switch to Brendan Rodgers' side at the end of the season, but has ruled out joining a "midtable" team such as Newcastle.Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has spoken of his willingness to join Liverpool this summer, but dismissed a possible move to "midtable" Newcastle.

The Belgium international has long been linked with a switch to the Premier League, with Brendan Rodgers and Alan Pardew reportedly courting the 24-year-old in recent seasons.

Alderweireld says he is open to leaving the Amsterdam ArenA, but only for a club competing at the top of the England top flight.

"I do not want to play in an English club in midtable. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria," he told reporters.

Rodgers is expected to sign a new center back in the summer with veteran Jamie Carragher set to retire and out-of-favor Martin Skrtel thought to be edging closer to the Anfield exit door.

Alderweireld has shined for Ajax this season, stepping up following the departure of former club captain Jan Vertonghen to Tottenham to make 36 appearances and notch three goals.

Lampard Chelsea exit claims denied following kit launch absence

    251837hp2.jpg

The 34-year-old was busy with family commitments and was unable to take part in the "demeaning" photoshoot, according to the England international's representative.Frank Lampard's absence from Chelsea's promotional photoshoot has no significance on his future at the club, claims the midfielder's agent.

The England international, who is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, did not take part in the Blues' Adidas kit campaign as representative Steve Kutner deemed the stunt as "demeaning".

Kutner says he was aware of the event ahead of time - which saw the likes of Fernando Torres and Juan Mata drenched in blue paint - but insisted Lampard would have been unavailable because of family commitments.

"I wouldn’t have allowed Frank to take part in any case," Kutner told reporters. "Covering him in paint would have been demeaning."

Lampard has been linked with possible moves to MLS side LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus over the past few months as Chelsea hasn't yet offered the 34-year-old an extension to his expiring deal.

The midfielder is only three goals shy of breaking Bobby Tamblings all-time club record of 202 goals for Chelsea with 200 goals from 597 appearances for the Blues.

:love:Evra desperate to bounce back from Manchester derby defeat

    212432hp2.jpg

The defender admitted the loss at Old Trafford was "painful" and insists his side's next match against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium will be difficult.

Patrice Evra has urged Manchester United to bounce back from its derby defeat to Manchester City by securing victory against Stoke City on Sunday.

Roberto Mancini's side cut the gap at the top of the Premier League to 12 points after strikes from James Milner and Sergio Aguero sealed a 2-1 win for City at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

"We're really disappointed because we missed the chance to end the title [race] and, of course, we've lost the derby. When you're a Man United player losing to City is painful," Evra told MUTV. "We played much better in the second half and I really believed we could win the game, but the second goal killed our legs. It's a bad night for us.

"We are still 12 points clear though and now we have to win the next game. Since I've been here, I've never lost two games in a row...I heard a lot of people talking about us being 15 points clear and that we didn't deserve to be. But if that's where we are it's because we're working hard. We must make sure we win at Stoke and show we are the best team in England."

United is unbeaten against Stoke in the Premier League, but Evra is anticipating a tough match at the Britannia Stadium, despite Tony Pulis' men going without a Premier League win since Feb. 9.

"It's always a difficult place to go. We have to be ready for the fight. We've always left there with three points in recent years but nothing is going to be easy until the end of the season," he said.

"We have to make sure we win the next game. That is the most important thing. We are still in a great position but we have to take things game by game and not put pressure on ourselves."
