West Brom 2-3 Wigan: McManaman keeps Latics’ survival hopes alive

    277237hp2.jpg

Wigan twice came from behind to pick up three vital points in the team's bid to escape Premier League relegation by defeating West Brom 3-2 on Saturday.

The game got off to a slow start before each net was rippled within the space of 10 minutes, Shane Long putting the home side ahead before Arouna Kone leveled things up. Gareth McAuley put the Baggies back in front soon after the break but, once more, back came the visiting team as James McArthur netted another equalizer.

There was more late drama as Shaun Maloney expertly set up Callum McManaman for a dramatic late winner that keeps Roberto Martinez's men in with a decent chance of survival.

Billy Jones, Youssouf Mulumbu and Markus Rosenberg came in for Steven Reid, James Morrison and the suspended Marc-Antoine Fortune in three Baggies changes from their 3-0 win over Southampton. The Latics, meanwhile, made two changes from the draw with Tottenham as Ben Watson and Ronnie Stam replaced Maynor Figueroa and James McArthur.

The first real opening came after 10 minutes when Graham Dorrans fired a low free kick underneath the wall, after Ben Watson was penalized for handball, however the effort was tame and Joel was able to claim it with ease.

A Paul Scharner intervention stopped Baggies attacker Long from getting on the end of a fine cross from Rosenberg, before Wigan forward Kone then forced Ben Foster into a smart save with a decent long-range strike, with chances very hard to come by in the opening 25 minutes.

However with just about half-an-hour played the home side took the lead, with each prong of the attacking trio involved. Romelu Lukaku threaded Rosenberg in behind with a fantastic early ball before the forward found Long with an equally superb low cross, leaving the Irishman to tap home.

The lead didn't last long, though. Kone leveled the scores just 10 minutes later with a well-placed header back across goal, and out of Foster's reach, after an inch-perfect cross from Jean Beausejour.

With five minutes played in the second half all Wigan's good work was undone. Kone's effectiveness in the air was less impressive as he lost Baggies defender McAuley who headed past Joel following Dorrans' delivery.

Wigan refused to give up, though, with substitute McArthur coming on and making an almost instant impact as he got on the end of a in-swinging Maloney cross to head the visiting side back level.

The match swayed one way and then the other, without either side really creating any chances, before the Latics completed their amazing comeback with 10 minutes left. Maloney maneuvered his way through the Baggies defense before cutting the ball back for McManaman who tapped home after a clever run.

Joel made a fine late save to deny Dorrans before Ridgewell headed just over the bar as Wigan just about held on to the vital victory, with McManaman also clearing from the line right at the death.

Tottenham 1-0 Southampon: Late Bale screamer seals vital victory

    277228hp2.jpg

LONDON -- Tottenham left it late but managed to a narrow 1-0 win against Southampton to keep alive in the hunt for Champions League qualification thanks to star winger Gareth Bale.

Southampton had the better chances in the first half and could have been ahead had it not been for some fine saves from Lloris. Spurs showed more fight after the break but the visitors put in an impressive display and looked like they would deservedly leave north London with a point only for Bale to smash home a vital late winner.

Aaron Lennon returned from injury for Spurs while Scott Parker was left out of the squad altoghether. Pochettino, meanwhile, brought Luke Shaw back into the Saints side in the absense of Danny Fox.

The start of the match was delayed by 30 minutes because of travel problems in north London, but that didn't stop Spurs making a quick start. Jermain Defoe came close from close range inside five minutes but sent his shot from inside the box just wide of the post.

Moments later the visitors wasted a glorious chance on the counter-attack, Nathaniel Clyne raced away down the right flank before firing a half-volley wide of Hugo Lloris' far post, with Rickie Lambert unmarked to his right.

The hosts then faded as an attacking threat, until Lennon cut in from the right in the 20th minute and almost delivered a dangerous ball into the box only for Cork to make a crucial interception.

Pochettino's side went close again on the break just before the half-hour mark, Guly do Prado this time bombed forward down the right flank but Michael Dawson made a last ditch challenge to cut out his attempted pass to Rickie Lambert.

Spurs then survived another scare thanks to Lloris. The Frenchman got down superbly to palm Lambert's free kick onto the post before holding on to Steven Davis' header from a cross only seconds later.

Villas-Boas would have had stern words with his player's during the break and it seemed to have had an immediate effect as Spurs made a brighter start to the second half.

But that period of pressure lasted only a matter of ten minutes before the Saints again began dictating the tempo of the game. A series of set-pieces were well defended by Villas-Boas' side as Pochettino's men began to turn the screw in front of their rampant travelling support.

Clint Demspey had a shot from the edge of the area as Spurs began to find their feet as an attacking force but the American's half-volley was wastefully miscued over the bar. Roared on by the home support, Spurs rallied for a late winner. They had a handball claim against Clyne turned down in amongst a goal-mouth scramble.

Another penalty appealed was also turned down by Mark Clattenburg as Bale went down under Shaw's challenge inside the area.

But just as some Spurs fans feared the worst, Bale finally came alive. The Welshman picked the ball up outside the area before driving a fierce low show past the hapless Boruc, sending White Hart Lane into raptures.

Norwich 1-2 Aston Villa: Agbonlahor double caps Lambert’s happy Carrow Road return

    277219hp2.jpg

A second half double from Gabriel Agbonlahor helped Aston Villa close in on Premier League survival with a 2-1 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The Canaries looked to have claimed a point after Grant Holt fired home a penalty with just over a quarter of an hour remaining, but Agbonlahor popped up late on to steal the win.

The home team made three changes from the side that lost to Stoke last Staurday, with Steven Whittaker, Alexander Tettey and Kei Kamara all dropping out.

Former Carrow Road gaffer Paul Lambert as predicted stuck with the same starting lineup that put six past Sunderland on Monday night to help the club's chances of remaining in the Premier League next season.

Norwich had the better of the opening period, with Scottish international Robert Snodgrass going close with a strike which was deflected for a corner.

The visitors started to get back into the game and almost took the lead, but Agbonlahor’s strike towards goal was deflected away for a corner by Sebastian Bassong with only 10 minutes gone in the game.

Two minutes later the Norwich fans were up off their feet as they demanded a penalty. A Pilkington cross appeared to strike the arm of Matthew Lowton, but referee Kevin Friend waved away the protests.

The ball remained congested in the middle of the park for the majority of the half, with the only time visiting keeper Brad Guzan was called into action was to come out and grab a Pilkington cross from the right before Holt got near it with six minutes left in the first period.

As the game entered stoppage time Aston Villa almost took the lead as an Agbonlahor cross from the right cannoned off of Garrido and onto the top of the Norwich bar.

Villa took the lead with 10 minutes gone in the second half. Agbonlahor received possession in the middle of the Norwich half, then marched forward with defenders backing off him and unleashed a low effort into the bottom corner.

Aston Villa should have been two goals ahead as Agbonlahor raced down the left, before playing the ball into the box for Andreas Weimann, but he could only direct his effort over Bunn’s bar.

However Lambert’s side was lucky not to be reduced to 10 men when Christian Benteke seemed to grab Bassong by the throat after the two squared, but the Belgian striker got away with a booking.

Norwich was handed an equalizer with 18 minutes left in the game as Snodgrass came in from the right side and was hauled to the ground by Joe Bennett, allowing Holt to fire home the resulting penalty and level things up.

With the game approaching injury-time, the Villa got the winner as Agbonlahor got around his marker Bassong and slid the ball beyond Bunn to seal a vital victory.

Swansea 0-0 Manchester City: Dzeko misses late sitter

    277213hp2.jpg

A game of few chances and little enthusiasm from last year's champion resulted in a goalless draw between Swansea and Manchester City at the Liberty Stadium.

A clearly uninterested City side left much to be desired as the home side dominated the first half, with Pablo Hernandez and star striker Michu coming close to opening the scoring for the Swans early on.

City, aided by the introduction of Edin Dzeko, started the second half the stronger of the two sides and dominated possession for the vast majority of the final period but was unable to carve out any real chances on goal, and failed to seriously trouble a Swansea defense which had little trouble dealing with as uncharacteristically lackluster attacking performance.

Michael Laudrup made one change to the side that lost 2-0 to Chelsea last weekend, with Ki Sung-Yueng dropping to the bench to be replaced by Nathan Dyer.

Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini, whose side beat West Ham 2-1 last week, made two alterations, bringing in James Milner for Samir Nasri and Matija Nastasic for Joleon Lescott, whose wife went into labor shortly before kickoff.

With second place all but confirmed, City has seemingly let its foot off the gas somewhat as the season comes to a close, and Swansea - visibly desperate for its first league win in over two months as the club looks to ensure a top-half finish - took full advantage of that in the early stages.

Hernandez was handed the first real chance after quarter of an hour when he linked up with Nathan Dyer only to be let down by a disappointing finish, before Dyer was involved again five minutes later when his cross beat Nastasic and found Michu in front of goal, but his mishit volley flew wide.

Swansea's dominance and Manchester City's disinterest continued for the rest of the first half, with a multitude of chances raining down on the away defense and a consistently beleaguered Joe Hart, while the visiting side created very little at the other end.

Swansea's pressure culminated in a strong shout for a penalty with seven minutes of the first period left to play when Nastasic seemed to bundle over Michu in the center of the City penalty area. Despite the cries of outrage from everyone associated with Swansea, referee Mike Jones shook his head and allowed play to continue.

Clearly unimpressed with his side's effort in the first 45 minutes, Mancini brought on Dzeko for the second half, and the Bosnian had an immediate impact, improving a front line that had been lacking in ideas throughout the majority of the first half.

Despite dominating possession, City still found it difficult to carve out any clear chances against a resilient Swansea side, and last season's champion reverted to its old ways with 15 minutes left to play when the home side went on the front foot looking for a late winner.

However, after good play between Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Tevez, Dzeko was set up with the perfect opportunity to steal all three points for City in the dying moments of the game. His close-range shot was skewed wide of the far post and left his side with no option but to share the points against a Swansea side that clearly wanted it more.

West Ham 0-0 Newcastle: Magpies only three points clear of drop zone

    277217hp2.jpg

LONDON -- West Ham and Newcastle played out a dour 0-0 draw at Upton Park that further jeopardizes the visitor's efforts to stay in the Premier League.
A dour first half saw little by way of incident though the game opened up in the second, with Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot proving the difference with a number of smart stops.

With Wigan winning at West Brom, the result means that Newcastle is just three points above Roberto Martinez's side and the relegation zone, with the Latics having a game in hand and superior goal difference, while West Ham sit in the relative comfort of midtable.

West Ham started with the game with same lineup that narrowly lost out to Manchester City last weekend, as Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was able to add defensive stability in the shape of captain Fabricio Coloccini, who was available for the first time since breaking a bone in his back in February.

In a bid to increase his side’s attacking potency, Pardew also recalled Yoan Gouffran and Hatem Ben Arfa to his starting XI and after a tentative opening, it was the visitors who began to emerge as the game’s more progressive force.Ben Arfa whipped a free kick onto the roof of the net, before Papiss Cisse prodded beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen, only to be denied by a well-timed goalline clearance by Winston Reid.

Though West Ham threatened intermittently through set pieces, the home side were unable to muster a meaningful attack on the Newcastle goal before the interval, with the first half petering out after Matt Jarvis’ poor touch let him down in a promising position in the penalty area.

The game opened up in the second half, with Jarvis beginning to target Andy Carroll with teasing balls into the box. Twice the winger found the target man at the far post though Carroll wasn’t able to find the target either time. Sandwiched in between was a Yohan Cabaye effort from range that fizzed wide of the post.
As the Hammers continued to attack, a flurry of activity saw Rob Elliot react smartly to deny Carroll after Kevin Nolan’s header had come back of the post, before Jarvis forced the goalkeeper into a great save with a rasping drive shortly after.

By way of respite, Gouffran stole in for the visitors after Jaaskelainen had misjudged a throughball, yet could only send his left footed effort from an acute angle across the goalmouth, while substitute Shola Ameobi drove narrowly wide from the edge of the area.

As the game entered the latter stages a goalmouth scramble saw Nolan almost fire home a winner but eventually neither side was able to claim the victory, leaving Newcastle with a nervy finish to the domestic campaign.

Fulham 2-4 Reading: Relegated Royals survive onslaught for conciliatory victory

    277233hp2.jpg

Hal Robson-Kanu scored twice as Reading left Craven Cottage with an unlikely 4-2 victory against Fulham on Saturday.

The 23-year-old gave the visiting side the lead with an early penalty before doubling the lead in the second half.

Fulham hit back through Bryan Ruiz but goals from Adam Le Fondre and Jem Karacan either side of the Costa Rican’s second extended the home side’s winless run to six games.

Fulham welcomed Jon-Arne Riise, Damien Duff and Player of the Year Sascha Riether back into the starting lineup but was still missing the suspended Steve Sidwell.

The big news for Reading, meanwhile, was the return of striker Pavel Pogrebnyak to his former hunting ground, while Alex McCarthy continued in goal.

The Reading stopper was called into action straight away as Ruiz found himself with the ball inside the six-yard area and sent a quick-fire effort at goal. McCarthy scrambled superbly and parried the Costa Rican’s effort.

But it was Reading which opened the scoring as Norwegian defender Riise – no stranger to a thumping clearance – attempted to send the ball away inside the area but caught Robson-Kanu with a high foot.

Referee Neil Swarbrick showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Robson-Kanu coolly tucked the ball home to Mark Schwarzer’s left.

Fulham’s response was that of a jaded team. Giorgos Karagounis embodied the team's early struggles and Martin Jol reeled him off after just half an hour.

His replacement, Hugo Rodallega, almost got the home side right back into the game with a fantastic turn and shot inside the area – but McCarthy was there once again, this time producing a reflex save that was so good it defied belief.

It was more of the same after the break as Karacan broke free inside the area and needed Schwarzer’s athletic reflexes to deny his poke towards goal.

Soon after, Pogrebnyak almost became the pantomime villain as a defensive mix-up allowed him to break through and almost double the Royals’ lead. The Russian was in an awkward position, however, and lost his footing just yards away from goal.

Reading did grab a second minutes later, though, and it was Robson-Kanu who clinically finished for a second time, rounding off a superb counterattack moments after the home fans were jeering Swarbrick’s decision to turn down a penalty for a foul on Dimitar Berbatov.

Fulham’s response, however, was to finally spark into life. A well-worked move ended up with Rodallega playing a sublime through ball to Ruiz and the Costa Rican turned and finished superbly to give his side hope.

When super-sub Le Fondre rounded Scwhwarzer and put Reading two goals clear shortly after, things were looking grim for the home side.

Ruiz, however, popped up a second time and his clinical finish made the scoreline 3-2 to set up a frantic finish.

Nigel Adkins’ men were having none of it, though, and Karacan ventured forward minutes later to add a fourth for the visiting side. A remarkable victory was complete.

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski fails to penalize 10-man Bavarians

    277272hp2.jpg

An early dress rehearsal for the UEFA Champions League final ended in deadlock for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, as Robert Lewandowski's missed penalty in the second half saw BVB miss the chance to beat its rival on the way to a 1-1 draw.

Mario Gomez had cancelled out Kevin Grosskreutz's early goal in the first half, and despite having the chance to net from the spot and playing with an extra man for the last 25 minutes, Dortmund could find no way past the Bundesliga champions.

Meeting just days after downing Real Madrid and Barcelona to seal the first all-German Champions League final, both Dortmund and Bayern took the opportunity to rest several key starters as they looked ahead to May 25's next meeting. This had no effect on the intensity of the match, however, as both teams demonstrated from the beginning that they were keen to hurt their rivals.

With just 10 minutes played of the first half, BVB took the lead in sublime fashion. Jakub Blaszczykowski surged down the left, and waited before floating in a cross to the far post. Grosskreutz was there to meet it, and the converted right back showed his scoring ability by netting a brilliant volley past Manuel Neuer to put the Bundesliga runnerup into the lead early on.

The home fans were delighted with the opener, and a capacity crowd cheered on their heroes as they sought a second. However, the mood soon turned to worry. Ilkay Gundogan's burst into the box was cut short by a shove from Diego Contento, which failed to draw a penalty despite Dortmund protests. Worst, the midfielder took a knock during the play and was taken off, creating a potential Champions League headache for Jurgen Klopp.

A reserve Bayern side had struggled in the opening exchanges, but soon showed why they have romped to the title and European final in 2013. Rafinha's cross into the danger zone caught BVB unawares, and Gomez was the man to take advantage as he stole in between the defence to head perfectly home. Gomez later forced a wonderful save from Roman Weidenfeller who denied him a second with his foot, while at the other end Neuer had to fend off Robert Lewandowski one-on-one, to ensure the game would be tied at the break.

Having relinquished their previous lead, Dortmund were given the chance to restore superiority just before the hour mark. A stinging shot from outside the area struck Jerome Boateng on the hand, and there was no hesitation from the official as he pointed to the penalty spot. Lewandowski stood up to take the kick, but saw his effort brilliantly saved by Neuer. Felipe Santana also went close, heading over from the resulting corner, but Bayern were pardoned and stayed in the match.

Die Roten were hanging on in a way they have rarely had to during 2012-13, and things only got harder when Rafinha saw red for a second booking. The full back earned a yellow just minutes earlier for a brutal tackle, and an elbow on Grosskreutz left little doubt that he would be receiving his marching orders, leaving Bayern to negotiate the final 25 minutes a man down.

Dortmund looked to press home the numerical advantage by throwing Marco Reus into the action, but despite dominating the final exchanges they struggled to break down a determined Bavarian side which was committed to avoiding defeat. There were few clear chances in the rest of a bad-tempered fixture, and BVB eventually had to settle for a point that on reflection was most likely the fairest result.

The draw means that the Bundesliga's top two maintain their positions, Bayern as already-crowned champions and BVB just one point shy of confirming its runnerup spot. The pair will meet again in the Champions League showpiece, in Wembley on May 25.

Real Madrid 4-3 Vallodolid: Battling Blancos make Barcelona wait for title
    277297hp2.jpg

Real Madrid staved off the title celebrations of Barcelona for another week with an entertaining 4-3 victory over Valladolid at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo led the way with a double.

Los Blancos knew that only victory would guarantee the defense of their Liga crown for one more matchday, but the visitors had no intention of following the script, taking the lead in the eighth minute through Oscar Gonzalez.

An own goal from Marc Valiente and a Ronaldo header turned the game around just after the half-hour mark, but Javi Guerra restored parity within moments during a chance-laden half for both sides.

Kaka quickly drilled Madrid into the lead after the restart, before Ronaldo nodded in his second in the 70th minute to seemingly seal the points - but a stunner from Sastre with three minutes to go ensured a nervy end to the game for the hosts.

The Brazilian was handed a rare start by Jose Mourinho, but with Sergio Ramos injured and Raul Albiol suspended, Ricardo Carvalho made a rare appearance in the center of defense.

And the Portuguese defender would show his rustiness with eight minutes gone. He failed to read an admittedly poor pass from Sami Khedira, but Oscar did not care who was to blame, running onto the ball and slotting home neatly.

Madrid nearly responded three times in three minutes, as Angel Di Maria, Luka Modric and Kaka flashed openings off target within seconds of each other.

Though Valladolid did not lack confidence, Madrid was the superior side, and when Kaka forced an excellent save from Jaimie from range, it seemed to be only a matter of time before their pressure would tell.

And true to form Madrid equalized on the next play, albeit in fortuitous fashion. Di Maria weaved his way into space and took aim, but it was a wicked deflection off Valiente that would be the undoing of Jamie.

The home side were in no mood to take their foot off the gas. Almost instantly, Ronaldo drilled a free kick narrowly wide, before Pepe forced a reflex save out of Jamie with a bullet header from a corner.

And just before the half-hour mark, Madrid took the lead. Di Maria’s in-swinging cross was guided towards the far corner expertly by the head of Ronaldo, who had stolen into an inch of space.

But just when the floodgates seemed to be opened, Valladolid put another spanner in the works. Oscar broke free and slid an incisive ball across the face of goal where Guerra, falling over, still managed to bundle home.

The action came thick and fast right up until the half-time whistle. Jamie stood tall again to deny Ronaldo and Benzema had a goal disallowed, before the Portuguese crashed a spectacular free-kick off the crossbar with a thud.

Madrid took the lead for the second time four minutes after the restart. Benzema did just enough to pick out Kaka on the left, and the Brazilian did not hesitate to power the ball into the far side of the goal.

Ronaldo planted a header over the bar from close as the hosts began to settle in, with Valladolid’s attacking threat seemingly confined to a relic of the first half.

And Ronaldo would not miss with his head again, rising highest to power Mesut Ozil’s corner into the far side with 20 minutes remaining.

By that point the result seemed in little doubt, but Diego Lopez still had to be alert to tip over an audacious effort from Oscar from near the halfway line.

However, in the 87th minute, substitute Sastre ripped an unstoppable 25-yard volley into the back of the net from a rebound off a corner to throw the cat right back amongst the pigeons.

But the visitors could not go that extra mile, as Madrid managed to see out the remaining minutes to keep a modicum of pride intact.

QPR 0-1 Arsenal:Gunners put pressure on Chelsea

    theowalcottgoal20130504_640x360.jpg

Theo Walcott struck his 20th goal of the season after 20 seconds as Arsenal beat relegated QPR 1-0 to return to third place in the Premier League.Arsenal's quickest Premier League goal and the swiftest of the season - surpassing efforts by Robin van Persie - secured Arsene Wenger's side a straightforward win over hapless QPR, who are now without a goal in four games and six hours.

Loic Remy was denied by a fine Wojciech Szczesny save as the Gunners held on for a fifth successive away win saw to move two points clear of Chelsea, having played two games more, and Tottenham, who play at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.Walcott, playing in the central role he has long coveted, troubled Rangers throughout and hit the post midway through the first half, but the visitors played well within themselves ahead of matches with relegation-threatened Wigan and Newcastle which will help decide whether they finish in the top four.

The build-up focused on the future of the respective managers as both Wenger and Harry Redknapp confirmed this week they would be staying put.Frenchman Wenger dismissed suggestions of a departure to Paris St Germain, while Redknapp reaffirmed his commitment to Rangers, insisting he would be a npower Championship boss next term.

Wenger's immediate focus is guiding the Gunners - without Kieran Gibbs due to a slight thigh strain - into the Champions League and they began the match in fifth following Tottenham's win over Southampton.Arsenal were seeking their first away win over QPR in the Premier League era and struck with the first attack.Tomas Rosicky crossed towards Aaron Ramsey, who headed down to Mikel Arteta.

Arteta then threaded the ball through a static defence to Walcott, who had ghosted in behind and fired in a shot across goal and under Robert Green.Walcott's 13th Premier League goal of the season was quicker than Van Persie's effort against Sunderland in October 2011 and the Dutchman's strike for Manchester United against West Ham last November.

The chances of QPR responding to claim a fifth win of the season did not appear good as Arsenal had surrendered just six points from winning positions this term and were one of two teams - alongside champions Manchester United - not to have lost after taking the lead.

Arsenal's intricate play continued, but a QPR defence without the injured Christopher Samba and Jose Bosingwa - omitted from the squad a week after he was seen laughing at the end of the Reading draw - repelled their visitors' efforts.
QPR were also fashioning openings, but the final ball was often lacking as Arsenal survived and Rangers' wait for a goal extended into a sixth hour.

Walcott came close to his second when he breached the defence once more to latch on to a Rosicky pass and saw his shot turned on to the post by Green.Bobby Zamora, back from suspension as one of four changes, then set-up QPR's best chance of the half, but Park Ji-sung blasted over and then saw another effort blocked.Szczesny was kept on his toes for much of the first half, but rarely called into action, before holding Tal Ben Haim's long-range strike as QPR finally managed to put an effort on target.

Stephane Mbia fired over and Andros Townsend curled a free-kick wide as Arsenal allowed QPR opportunities.Townsend was Rangers' most lively player and twice troubled Szczesny early in the second half.

The goalkeeper first had to stretch to claw away a cross before Townsend's 25-yard shot stung his hands.Monreal was then booked for tugging back the on-loan Spurs winger, but the Gunners managed to deal with the limp threat from Rangers' nine other outfield players.

Shaun Derry, who replaced the ineffective Mbia at the interval, was booked for bringing down Rosicky, after 64 minutes as Arsenal pushed forward, but the Gunners rarely had to exert themselves.Green parried clear a swerving Santi Cazorla drive from the left channel and then turned a Walcott shot around the post after the forward had wriggled around Ben Haim.

Arsenal continued to threaten and Clint Hill cut out Lukas Podolski's dangerous cross towards Walcott, who then shot straight at Green.Seven minutes from time, QPR broke, with Zamora crossing for Remy, whose shot on the turn appeared destined for the far corner, only for Szczesny to save at full stretch.

That was as good as it got for QPR as Arsenal saw out victory.

The Saint-Etienne forward has been in sensational form in Ligue 1 this season, but he has his sights set on a move abroad for the time being.Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has hinted at interest in a move abroad, while claiming he is not currently interested in a switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old has been something of a revelation in Ligue 1 this season, firing 19 goals in 34 appearances, but the Gabon forward has suggested he would be tempted to ply his trade in La Liga, the Premier League or the Bundesliga.

"Since I've played football, I've always loved La Liga," he was quoted as saying by Le Parisien. "But I do not have a preference for my future. Everyone knows English football. The Bundesliga could be a good destination. PSG? Not necessarily, even if there had been contact.

"Paris is a big project. Could I be part of that? Perhaps one day. But I don't think so for now."

Aubameyang, who still has three years to run on his contract, joined Saint-Etienne on a permanent deal from AC Milan in December 2011.

Hull City secures Premier League promotion

Hull City have secured automatic promotion to the Premier League following a dramatic 2-2 draw against Championship winners Cardiff City on Saturday.

Nicky Maynard's late penalty for Cardiff set up a nervy finish for Steve Bruce's side, who had taken a second-half lead through Nick Proschwitz and Paul McShane.

But Watford was unable to capitalize as a late error from debutant goalkeeper Jack Bonham, who saw a Ross McCormack chip to slip through his fingers, allowed Leeds to secure a 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road.

Joining Gianfranco Zola's side in the playoffs are Brighton, Crystal Palace and Leicester City, who all sealed wins on the final day of the Championship campaign.

Leicester clinched sixth place in a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, who narrowly miss out on the play-offs after Anthony Knockaert's 90th minute goal at the City Ground.

Bolton also fell agonizingly short on goal difference after they could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Blackpool on the final day.

At the bottom, Peterborough was relegated to League One in agonizing fashion, as Mile Jedinak headed in a late goal to secure a 3-2 win for Crystal Palace.

That result meant Barnsley's 2-2 draw away at Huddersfield was enough to see the Tykes safe by a single point.

Meanwhile, Brighton secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wolves, which sent the Midlands side into League One.
