Eriksen not good enough for Dortmund, says Vergoossen

    233989hp2.jpg

The coach says the Denmark international is not at the same level as BVB stars Mario Gotze or Marco Reus.Former PSV Eindhoven boss Sef Vergoossen does not believe Christian Eriksen is ready for a move to a major European club amid speculation linking him with a move to Borussia Dortmund.

The Ajax starlet has emerged as one of the continent's leading young players in recent years and is reportedly being lined up by Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp to replace Bayern Munich-bound Mario Gotze this summer.

On Monday, the youngster revealed his interest in the prospect of joining the German giants, but Vergoossen has warned the 21-year-old of the pitfalls which may follow if he opts for a move away from the Netherlands too early and noted the plight of Ibrahim Affelay as a cautionary tale.

"I'm worried how he will respond to such a big move. I do not think he is ready to match the physical demands of a club like Dortmund yet. With all due respect to him, players like Reus and Gotze are at a higher level to Eriksen," Vergoosen told NUsport. "When I was coach of PSV in 2008, Ibrahim Affelay was in a similiar situation as Eriksen is now.

"I advised Ibrahim to stay with us until he was fully developed, but he ended up signing for Barcelona in 2010."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is also believed to be a fond admirer of Eriksen - whose current deal expires in 2014 - but last month Ajax denied reports that a deal had been struck to bring Eriksen to Anfield.

Albiol: We are Copa del Rey favorites

    202090hp2.jpg

The defender says his Real Madrid needs to prove why it has been tipped for cup success at the expense of its fierce city rival.Real Madrid center back Raul Albiol has urged his teammates to show why they are Copa del Rey favorites when they face Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 17.

Los Blancos booked their place in the final with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou and the defender insists the club is focused on lifting the trophy following the disappointment of its Champions League semifinal exit at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

"We are all united," Albiol told Marca. "There is not long to go before the end of the season, so [we need] to focus all our strength to win at Atletico Madrid.

"It will be difficult, but we [will] have many chances to win. We are Real Madrid and we have to prove why we are favorites.

"We started with the goal of winning all the trophies, now we have [the chance to win] one and you have to earn it.

"We're at home, it's a final and we want the title for Madrid, for Real Madrid, and for ourselves. It was hard to reach the final."

Albiol also spoke about Atletico's failure to beat Real in the past 14 years, a streak that continued with their most recent league meeting.

"I do not like statistics because there always comes the day when they are broken. Hopefully [this one] lasts, and does not end in the cup final," Albiol said.

Redknapp says Julio Cesar won't return to QPR

    270683hp2.jpg

The Rs boss expects his Brazilian goalkeeper to leave this summer, with Arsenal, AC Milan and Roma all reported to be in the mix for his signature.QPR manager Harry Redknapp expects that goalkeeper Julio Cesar will lead the exodus out of Loftus Road this summer, with Serie A or La Liga a likely destination.

The Rs boss has confirmed that the Brazil international will be on his way out as the relegated side looks to shed some of its colossal wage bill before attempting to climb out of the League Championship next season.

"I don't see Julio being here next year — he's not a player for the Championship. He's a player for a top Italian or Spanish or Premier League team," Redknapp told the London Evening Standard. "Julio's got the World Cup coming up and he's the top Brazilian keeper. Rob [Green's] come in and done great for me. He's the one we're looking to play next season."

Arsenal, AC Milan and Roma are among the clubs to have been linked with relieving QPR of Cesar's 90,000 pound-per-week wages.

Liverpool captain Gerrard to undergo shoulder surgery

The 32-year-old is set to go under the knife to cure an ongoing medical issue and will miss the last two games of the season as well as England's end-of-term matches.Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will undergo surgery on a lingering shoulder injury and miss the club's final two games of the season, the Premier League team has confirmed.

The England midfielder's problems have deepened over the last couple of weeks, with surgical intervention now required to ensure that he is ready for 2013-14.

Manager Brendan Rodgers had denied in late April that any such plans were in place, despite first-team coach Mike Marsh voicing his opinion that it would be necessary.

Gerrard will play no part in the club's last two matches of the campaign, and will miss England's summer friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil, but the club expects to have him fit for the beginning of preseason.

The Reds skipper has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 10 goals and notching 11 assists.

    Balotelli faces fine for celebration

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has confirmed the club will punish the Italian for removing his shirt after scoring the winning goal against Torino on Sunday
Mario Balotelli will be fined for his celebration after scoring the winner in this weekend's 1-0 win over Torino, AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has confirmed.

The Rossoneri appeared to be on the verge of dropping two vital points in the Champions League race until Balotelli's late winner, before the striker celebrated the invaluable goal by removing his shirt.

Galliani expressed his delight at the 22-year-old's run of nine goals in 10 Serie A matches, but indicated he will be fined a nondisclosed amount for his antics.

"As long as he scores more goals than the shirts he takes off then that is OK... But taking your shirt off is not acceptable and he will notice that it isn't acceptable on his handsome payslip at the end of the month," Galliani told reporters.

"We are very happy with Mario, though. He is a Milan supporter and that helps, it gives him something extra. He told me that in 1999 he was going around Brescia with a Milan flag in celebration of [Alberto] Zaccheroni's Scudetto."

Balotelli's solitary strike on Sunday moved Milan four points clear of Fiorentina with just three games to go in the battle for third place.

Benitez drops Mourinho to Chelsea hint

The interim boss suggests that "everyone knows" that his Real Madrid counterpart will be the man to replace him when he departs Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.Interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has hinted that Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho will be his successor at Stamford Bridge.

The outgoing Spaniard made the clear implication at Tuesday's pre-match press conference ahead of a crucial Premier League clash with Tottenham.

"You know that the next year [there] will be another manager here, so it's very clear," Benitez observed. "I think everyone knows who will be here."

Asked if he meant Mourinho specifically, the Blues boss replied: "I think I have to concentrate on my job. It's not my concern now what will happen next year."

    :(:(:(Sir Alex set to retire

    143252797-e1367565964631.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly ready to announce his retirement from the Old Trafford hotseat this week, according to The Telegraph and The Times.Ferguson, 71, is the longest-serving manager in English football having been at the United helm for a trophy-laden 27 years.

However, speculation about his possible retirement has regularly appeared in recent years and returned in the wake of the Premier League champions' confirmation that Ferguson requires surgery on his hip this summer. Those rumours gained momentum on Tuesday, with a United golf day allegedly overshadowed by speculation about the Scot's future.

Both The Times and The Telegraph cite sources close to the first-team squad saying that the United players have been told to ready themselves for a "significant announcement" from their manager. As of Tuesday night, the club had failed to respond to requests to confirm or deny the reports about Ferguson's future, although New York Stock Exchange rules mean the club will have to inform them of such a significant development. If continued news speculation does affect trading, United may have to issue guidance to investors.

Bookmakers did close markets on Ferguson's retirement, as well as David Moyes being his immediate successor. It has also been mooted, however, that any announcement may just see a stand-in installed until the 71-year-old recovers from a July hip operation around the end of August.

United have long been attempting to put a framework in place so that the succession is as smooth as possible - and avoids the chaos of the post-Matt Busby era, when the legendary manager moved into a director of football role before later returning to take the managerial reins. A pre-Christmas board meeting led to an understanding that Ferguson would not leave until 2015, and Ferguson recently stated that he will not be vacating his position with the Red Devils anytime soon.

However, there have already been informal meetings with potential future candidates. Ferguson, David Gill and one of the Glazer family met Pep Guardiola in New York in October, before the Catalan agreed to take over at Bayern Munich.

Despite Ferguson's personal enthusiasm about the future appointment of Guardiola, he is known to have been a huge admirer of Moyes and feels he has many of the qualities necessary to take over at Old Trafford.Jose Mourinho is not expected to be in the frame, though, with a high-ranking Stamford Bridge source telling ESPN that the the Portuguese is "virtually certain" to replace Rafael Benitez in the next two months, and there is too little leverage room for United to attempt any kind of late high-profile coup. However, it is understood that Roman Abramovich is balking at paying any buy-out clause, which may leave an opening for United.

Ferguson announced his intention to retire in 2002 before changing his mind and going on to win a further six Premier League titles, with this year's championship crown his 13th in all with the club.

Chelsea winger Hazard set to return for Tottenham clash, reveals Benitez

The Belgium international, who missed his side's match against Manchester United on Sunday, is "fine" and will be available for the crucial top-four clash against Spurs.Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed that midfielder Eden Hazard will be available for Wednesday night’s crucial clash with Tottenham.

The Blues take on former manager Andre Villas-Boas’ side at Stamford Bridge with both clubs firmly in the hunt for a Champions League spot. Hazard missed Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday but is set for a return to the squad, while Benitez confirmed that John Obi Mikel and Ryan Bertrand will not feature.

"Hazard was training in a normal training session. He is fine, he is in the squad," Benitez told reporters. "Mikel is not available; he is still in some pain. Bertrand is not available with a problem with his knee, nothing serious.”

Benitez has made full use of the Chelsea squad, constantly rotating his side as the Blues have been forced to contend with a huge amount of fixtures in a short space of time.

"I think it's important to manage the squad and important for them,” Benitez said. “It doesn't matter if you pick one or the other, they all want to win and be a part of the important games."

Manchester United have confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season after winning the club's 20th league title and will move upstairs to become a director and ambassador.

Ferguson, 71, took charge of United in 1986 and enjoyed a trophy-laden 27 years at the club. United have dominated English football in the Premier League era, winning the title 13 times and also lifting the Champions League in 1999 and 2008.In addition, he won the FA Cup five times, the League Cup four times, plus the FIFA Club World Cup, Intercontinental Cup, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.His final match will be against West Bromwich Albion on May 19, his 1500th game in charge of United.

He won an unprecented 49 trophies in total, the frst coming when St Mirren won the Scottish First Division title in 1976-77. He then moved to Aberdeen and turned the Dons into a European force in the 1980s. There he won three championships, four Scottish FA Cups, the League Cup, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.A statement released to the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday morning stated: "Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season, Manchester United announced today. The most successful manager in English football history will bow out after the West Bromwich Albion game on 19 May and join the football club board."

Announcing his decision to retire, Ferguson spoke of his pride at his achievements at United and also thanked the club for allowing him to rebuild it from top to bottom."The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly," he said. "It is the right time. It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.

"The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one."Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.
"Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both director and ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

    SirAlexFergusonDavidGill_2903428.jpg

"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich."In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team."Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy chief executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them."To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."

United chief executive David Gill, who will himself leave the club this summer, said: "I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years - through the Treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings. We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition."Alex's vision, energy and ability have built teams - both on and off the pitch - that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.

"The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years."What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten. It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend."

Joel Glazer, joint chairman of United along with his brother Avie, said: "Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he's also a wonderful person. His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable. I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow."Avie Glazer added: "I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the club as a director. His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future."

Reports about Ferguson's retirement emerged in the Daily Telegraph late on Tuesday, the news coming just days after the club announced he was likely to miss the start of the 2013-14 season after hip surgery.Bookmakers have closed markets on Everton manager David Moyes being his immediate successor after a flurry of bets on Tuesday.

United have long been attempting to put a framework in place so that the succession is as smooth as possible - and avoids the chaos of the post-Matt Busby era, when the legendary manager moved into a director of football role before later returning to take the managerial reins.A pre-Christmas board meeting led to an understanding that Ferguson would not leave until 2015, and Ferguson recently stated that he will not be vacating his position with the Red Devils anytime soon. But Sir Alex has decided to step down later this month.

However, there have already been informal meetings with potential future candidates.
