Manchester United confirm appointment of David Moyes on a six-year contract

    david-moyes-old-trafford-manchester-united_2941463.jpg

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of David Moyes as their new manager on a six-year contract. The 50-year-old will take charge at Old Trafford on July 1 after completing the season with Everton.

Moyes has the backing of Sir Alex Ferguson, who will retire at the end of the season, and his first official game will be the Community Shield against either Manchester City or Wigan at Wembley on August 11.Moyes, who has spent 11 years with Everton, said: "It's a great honour to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United.

"I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the football club.

"I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often and I'm really looking forward to taking up the post next season."I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and board of directors and a great set of players."Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

"Everton's fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players."Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life."

Ferguson, who is stepping down as United manager after a near 27-year stint, said: "When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes, we unanimously agreed on David Moyes. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic."I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here.

"He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton."There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club."

    Served wonderfully well

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright paid tribute to Moyes earlier on Thursday after it emerged that he would be leaving Goodison Park after 11 years at the helm.

He said: "I think, at the end of the day, David's contract is up in six weeks' time and he has a right to make his own decisions. He's served this club wonderfully well."

Moyes quickly emerged as the favourite to become United's boss after Sir Alex Ferguson announced he would be retiring, and received widespread support.
Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen revealed he would choose the Everton boss, saying: "What an act to follow. I guess only Mourinho would have the confidence to strut through the door. If it were me, I'd go for Moyes."Former United keeper Peter Schmeichel also gave his backing to Moyes, saying: "When we talk about Moyes, he has been a decade at Everton and done a fantastic job on limited funds.

"Is he cut from the same cloth? I don't know. Don't forget there will be major changes with David Gill stepping down - the club is really changing in the summer, the more stability they can add the better."David Moyes, he sounds like a good solution."

    Opportunities

United chief executive David Gill had previously outlined the qualities needed to succeed Ferguson as manager, saying: "The qualities are the ones that have been inherent at Manchester United for many years.

"Our two most successful eras were with managers who got involved with all aspects of the club, from the youth team to the first team, to get that degree of loyalty and understanding of the football club."Clearly he has to have the requisite football experience, both in terms of domestic and European experience. It is a small pool."

Everton, meanwhile, must start their search for a successor to Moyes, and Mark Hughes has refused to rule himself out of the running for the job.

"I think when one manager leaves there are opportunities for other managers who are currently out of work, which includes myself," Hughes told Sky Sports News.
"It's a great club; it's a club that I had the fortune to play for and really enjoyed my time there."

It was an honor to compete against Sir Alex Ferguson, says Manchester City boss Mancini

The 48-year-old locked horns with the Scot ever since he took over at the Etihad Stadium, and while their relationship often became fractious the Italian always retained respect.Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says it was an honor and a pleasure to compete against Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mancini described the Manchester United boss as the best manager of his generation and revealed how he relished going up against the legendary Scot in their Manchester derby rivalry. He also described the soon-to-retire United boss as the greatest manager of his generation.

"For me, it has been a great honor and pleasure to compete against Sir Alex for three years," Mancini told reporters. "It was a great honor to beat him in Old Trafford and I wish him good luck for his future. I don't know for which reasons (he has retired).

"Everyone can have his opinion but one manager who stays for 27 years in the same club and won every trophy for 27 years - it is an incredible situation."I don't think there will be another manager like him.

"It is difficult to say Sir Alex is the best (ever), but he is the best in the last 27 years."When asked whether Sir Alex's retirement will tip the title balance in City's favor, Mancini replied: "No. I think that when there is a top club like United, you can change the manager, an important manager like Sir Alex who built this team, but I think the club will stay a big club."

Mancini recalled his two wins at Old Trafford as special moments in his managerial career and also claimed he sent a message to Ferguson following the 71-year-old's retirement.

"For me it was fantastic to compete against him in every derby because he was a top manager," Mancini said. "I think we should respect his decision."

Xabi Alonso: Casillas' attitude has been impeccable

    201160_heroa.jpg

The midfielder has praised his compatriot's professionalism and has insisted that Real Madrid are desperate for Copa del Rey glory Xabi Alonso has hailed Real Madrid teammate Iker Casillas' positive attitude in recent months, saying the goalkeeper has been an example to follow since losing his starting berth.

The 31-year-old sustained a hand injury in the Copa del Rey draw against Valencia back in January, prompting the signing of Diego Lopez, who has been Jose Mourinho's first-choice shot-stopper ever since.

"Casillas' his attitude has been impeccable. He has been an example to follow," he told reporters.

The midfielder then went on to stress that Madrid is determined to finish the season on a high and win the Copa del Rey. The Spanish cup final against Atletico Madrid takes place on May 17.

"Our aim is clear. We're going to fight for the one title left for us this season. It's one we need to win and we're going to fully focus on it. In order to do that we all need to be pulling in the same direction," Alonso said.

Alonso also briefly discussed his future at Madrid and stressed that he will not leave the club this summer.

"Are you asking me if I'll be enjoying these fans next year? Yes, I certainly will be," he insisted.

The 31-year-old's current contract with Madrid runs until the summer of 2014.

Ancelotti pays tribute to 'legend and hero' Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Manchester United exit

    126487_heroa.jpg

After an unprecedented era of success the Red Devils boss leaves the game as the best manager ever, and the former Chelsea boss has written an impassioned homage to his adversary Paris Saint-Germain manager Carlo Ancelotti has hailed retiring "legend and hero" Sir Alex Ferguson, insisting the outbound Manchester United boss deserves all the praise he will get.

As exclusively revealed on Wednesday, Sir Alex hand-picked David Moyes as his successor, who was unveiled on Thursday, after a 26-year reign filled with titles and trophies.

Ancelotti did the double over Sir Alex during Chelsea’s league and cup double in the 2009-10 season, and revealed they always got on well off the pitch.

"He's a symbol, a legend and a hero for Manchester United," the Italian wrote in a column for La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But at the same time he's humble, modest and still has the passion of a child in carrying out his work.

"I don't remember the exact moment I met him for the first time, but I know we hit it off immediately. We were adversaries. At times I won and at times he won, but we were never enemies. At the end of each game we'd enjoy a good glass of wine and a laugh. This is the kind of football I like, and that Sir Alex likes as well."

Ancelotti hinted that Sir Alex's longevity has been down to a good relationship with the club's owners and chiefs; something which has brought great success in an era of swift managerial changes.

"No director or president has ever questioned him," he added. "This should be a lesson to those in the world of football, since far too often you find a lack of patience in this environment. Coaches need time to convey their thoughts, to make themselves understood and to give shape to their ideas of the game. Sir Alex had this time."

Moyes clearly has big shoes to fill, but Ancelotti believes the new Red Devils manager simply needs to carry on where his predecessor left off.

"For us coaches, Ferguson's adventure is a model to be followed," he continued. "I think his greatest achievement was transmitting a sense of belonging to the players he guided. Being a part of Manchester United, being a Red Devil, is something that will never fade.

"For once a withdrawn and simple man like him will accept the plaudits. In the end, they're justified. And most importantly, he deserves them."

Tottenham attacker Bale believes he still has room for improvement despite award-winning season

The Wales international is delighted with the way his campaign has gone, but feels he is still learning his new role in the team and that there is more to come from him.
Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale feels he still has plenty of room for improvement, despite winning three personal awards this season.

Journalists voted for him to win the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year, and his fellow peers chose him to be PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

After starting life as a fullback, the move to an advanced role has paid dividends this season, with Bale hitting the back of the net 25 times in all competitions, but he says the best is yet to come.

"Hopefully there is a lot more [to come]," the 23-year-old told reporters. "I have only just started in my new free role in the middle, so there is still a lot to learn in that position for me. I still need to kind of figure out a few things - which is important.

"As I say to myself every season, I want to improve again, there are still things I need to improve, there are things which need working on in more areas than others, and I can do that."

Bale was voted ahead of Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, who has impressed in his first season at Old Trafford, and he is delighted to be among the big names who have won it previously.

He continued: "When you look at all of the past winners, the legends of the game, this is a massive honor, and to be on the list with them now is a massive privilege.

"You always dream of things like this, whether they come true or not is another matter, but now that it has, it is a massive achievement for me, but one I could have not done without my team or my manager.

"The team has been fantastic this season and we have played some very good stuff, it is always easier to play in a really good team."

Manchester City striker Dzeko uncertain about his future

The Bosnia international has suggested that he could be tempted by a move away from the Etihad at the end of the season, but he is concentrating on winning the FA Cup first Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has revealed that he could be on the move this summer, after admitting his future at the club is uncertain.

The 27-year-old was coy on speculation linking him with a move away from the Etihad Stadium, with his role this season having been reduced to that of impact substitute.

The Bosnian, who is City's top scorer in the league despite starting just 15 times, revealed to reporters he was unsure of where he will be plying his trade next year, saying: "We will see. Everything is open."

City faces Wigan in the FA Cup final on Saturday, and Dzeko could miss out on a starting berth at Wembley for a second time, after being an unused substitute when City beat Stoke two years ago.

Dzeko is keen to add to his 14 goals this season, and is itching to play, but knows that City's entire squad feels the same way and believes that lifting the cup is more important than personal glory.

He said: "That's my job to score goals, if I come on after 60 minutes or if I start.

"Everyone is hoping, everyone wants to play. I don't know. I don't think about that but I think that's not important. It's important to win it.

"It means a lot to the club, to the fans, to us players, to everyone.

"I think it is important just to win it. I'm not sure about scoring the winner but I am dreaming of playing and winning the title."

The search for Moyes replacement is underway, says Everton chairman Kenwright

The Toffees chief is determined to find the right man to succeed the Scot, who will replace the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United at the end of the season Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has pledged to find the best possible replacement for David Moyes following the Scot's move to Manchester United.

Moyes will replace the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, who announced his retirement on Wednesday, but focus at Goodison Park now switches to a managerial hunt of their own.

Moyes' exit ends his 11-year tenure at the club, and Kenwright believes the 50-year-old has left a lasting legacy and the daunting task to find a worthy successor is already underway.

He told Sky Sports News: "We really will be out there finding the right man for this football club because it’s an extraordinary football club that is worshipped by its fans. They are the people – more than anything - that I have been thinking of over the last 24 hours.

"Eleven years ago I made a decision and it was an instant decision when I met David. I don’t think that can happen this time. We have got to be out there looking to see what kind of candidates can take the club forward.

"We've had a really good 11 year adventure with David and now it is my job and the club's job to get a worthy successor and build on what David has brought to the club and to hopefully move on from there."

Although Moyes did not win a trophy during his time on Merseyside, the former Preston manager won plaudits for working wonders on a shoestring budget and constantly over-achieving with his side.

Kenwright was full of praise for a manager that took charge of over 500 matches and believes his new employers are inheriting the perfect replacement for Ferguson.

"He's a great manager and Manchester United are very lucky," added the chairman.

"I'm pretty certain Evertonians will only look on David with gratitude. We have got two games left and it will be tough for those Evertonians to say goodbye to him."

Real Madrid cancels press conference in bid to avoid further controversy

In a rare move, the Spanish giants will not present Jose Mourinho nor even his assistant Aitor Karanka to the media ahead of the weekend’s game against Espanyol Real Madrid has cancelled its scheduled Friday press conference in a bid to calm the storm of speculation surrounding the club.

The media briefing was going to serve as the pre-match press call ahead of Saturday evening’s Liga clash away to Espanyol.

However, following another explosive press conference on Tuesday prior to the midweek game with Malaga, the club is desperate to ease tensions at the Santiago Bernabeu and has opted not to present any staff or players to journalists.

That controversial press briefing came on the back of yet more headline-making comments from boss Jose Mourinho following a win over Valladolid.

Club officials are concerned by the negative publicity and high tensions between staff and a number of high-profile players and are desperate to restore some sort of calm ahead of the season-defining Copa del Rey final against city rival Atletico Madrid on May 17.

On Tuesday, Mourinho hit back at his own defender, Pepe, who had criticized the coach for his comments about Iker Casillas, while the 'Special One' had another dig at the goalkeeper, saying he preferred Diego Lopez’s playing style.

He also responded to quotes from Andres Iniesta - who had backed the Spain shot-stopper, suggesting Madrid’s Catalan rivals would struggle to achieve meaningful success if they didn’t have Lionel Messi in their team.

Despite being permitted by Liga rules, cancellations of press briefings are a rare move. Los Blancos have only done it twice before in Mourinho’s three-year tenure.

The Bernabeu giants cancelled two successive media briefings during his first season, while he was engaged in a war of words with then-Sporting Gijon boss Manuel Preciado.

Ferdinand and Carrick praise next Manchester United manager David Moyes

The Everton manager has agreed a six-year deal to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, and two of his future players have given the appointment their full support Manchester United's senior players have reacted positively to David Moyes' appointment as successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson, with Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand both paying tribute to the Everton manager.

"I think he [Moyes] has obviously done a terrific job at Everton," Carrick told MUTV.

"He's been there for a long time now with great success for the resources that he's had and he's well respected with everyone I spoke to.

"All the players who have played for him all enjoy playing with him and say good things about him, obviously enough for him to get the chance to be the manager of this great club."

Ferdinand was equally effusive, and is adamant that Moyes is the perfect man to replace his fellow Scot.

"We are all delighted,” the defender added. “I think it was important that the club made a decision quickly and it all got sorted out.

"I think the club have acted impeccably in that sense. The manager, I’m sure, thought long and hard about his own decision, he made it and then the club acted swiftly and it’s great to see the new manager coming in."

“Another reason I think it’s a good appointment is that David Moyes will be very, very open and sympathetic to the traditions of the club and he’ll try to continue that and not come in and make changes in terms of the whole characteristics of the club.

“That’s important for a club of this size and important from what’s gone on before. The manager that we’ve got now has implemented a fantastic system, a working system, and we’ve been successful this year and hopefully we can continue that and this guy I’m sure is the right man to do that and take us forward."

Mourinho return to Chelsea 'would be a great thing,' says Lampard

The Real Madrid boss - who won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge - is widely thought to have agreed to return to London at the end of the season.
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard says a possible return of Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge would be "great" for the club.

The Real Madrid boss is widely expected to leave Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season in favor of a second spell at the West London side.

Mourinho led Chelsea to a first-ever Premier League title during his first season in charge at the club in 2004-05, before retaining it the following term, and Lampard is keen for the Portuguese to return.

"I think it would be a great thing for the club, I think he is a fantastic manager," Lampard told BBC Sport. "I've seen speculation before and a completely different manager walks through the door so we never know on that front, but he is certainly one of the greatest managers, if not the greatest, in world football, so I'm sure the club and the fans will be happy to have him."

Moyes wants Baines and Fellaini in £39m deal

    article-2322386-0E64651500000578-448_634x613.jpg

DAVID MOYES is ready to raid his old club Everton for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.

Moyes will take over from Alex Ferguson in the Manchester United hotseat on July 1. And one of his first targets will be a £15million move for England left-back Baines — with the prospect of making it a £39m double swoop for Fellaini too.

Moyes, 50, stays in charge at Everton for the last two games of this season.
And the Scot will bid an emotional farewell to Goodison Park in their final home game of the season against West Ham on Sunday. Former Wigan full-back Baines, 28, has long been on United’s radar but the champions have never made an official approach.

That is set to change when Moyes checks in with the mouthwatering bonus of having the attack-minded Baines providing ammunition for Robin Van Persie in the middle.

Dortmund's Felipe Santana hints at summer exit

The 27-year-old Brazilian has refused to quell rumors that he will leave the club at the end of the season and says he will always cherish his last-minute goal against Malaga.Borussia Dortmund defender Felipe Santana has hinted that his time at the club is coming to an end, amid strong rumors of a move to Schalke in the summer.

The 27-year-old Santana has been behind Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic in the pecking order in the BVB defene this season, and he has said he will speak to head coach Jurgen Klopp about a potential move away from Signal Iduna Park at the end of the season.

"I've read so many things. I'm going to have to talk to our manager [Klopp] about my future," the Brazilian told Ruhr Nachrichten. "I must say thank you to Dortmund. They were my first overseas club and I have won a major championship with them, but I need to see what is better for me in the future now."

Santana scored a last-minute winner against Malaga in their Champions League quarterfinal second leg to send BVB through to the semifinals, and now that the club has reached the final, the defender is confident of victory over Bayern Munich on May 25.

"That goal was the best moment of my life," Santana said. "The football god has given us this opportunity and now I hope that it works out at Wembley in the final. We will win it."

Santana joined Dortmund in 2008 and has won two Bundesliga titles and one DFB Pokal during his time at the Schwarzgelben.

Atletico Madrid president brushes off Falcao rumors

Enrique Cerezo is tired of the speculation around his star forward, who he thinks will be a game-changer in the Copa del Rey final.Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has brushed off speculation linking Radamel Falcao with Monaco.

Rumors surfaced on Thursday that the striker is set to join the cash-rich French club in the summer for a whopping 60 million euros, with a pay packet per year set at a pocket-bulging 10 million euros.

The Atletico chief revealed his frustration at the continued transfer saga around his star striker and instead looked ahead to the Copa del Rey final on May 17 against Real Madrid, which he believes Falcao can turn in Atleti's favor.

"Now Falcao's going to Monaco? We are going to go around the whole world!" Cerezo told reporters on Friday. "Falcao is a specialist at playing in finals and, in the end, he can help us win them.

"Finals are there to be won, but nothing is easy, and we intend to go out there with all the enthusiasm in the world to achieve success."

Cerezo refused to accept that Jose Mourinho's public arguments with a number of his players this week will affect the Blancos' morale but insists that Atleti will go into the clash at the Santiago Bernabeu with every belief it can lift the trophy.

"That thing about fishermen profiting in an untidy river is not completely true," Cerezo said. "Madrid are a great team. We will go into the game with excitement, with a strong will and with a desire to win against Real Madrid in their own stadium."

Atleti's last success in the Copa del Rey came in 1996 when it beat Barcelona in extra-time.

FIFA sends warning to Brazil over World Cup stadiums

    276172_heroa.jpg

The cancellation of the second test event at the Maracana is a setback, but the world governing body is more concerned about the progress of six other proposed venues FIFA has revealed its concern over the construction of six World Cup stadiums ahead of next year's finals in Brazil.

A second test event at Rio's redeveloped Maracana stadium was recently canceled, heightening fears over the readiness of arenas across the country for this summer's Confederations Cup.

But, while FIFA is content with the Maracana issue will be overcome, the world game's governing body is closely monitoring the progress of the six other World Cup grounds not being used for the Confederations Cup.

Stadiums in Cuiaba, Manaus, Natal, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Sao Paulo must be handed over to FIFA before the end of 2013 and the local officials and construction companies have been issued with a reminder of the timescale.

“Since November 2012, it was requested that all stadia have a minimum of two test events before the FIFA Confederations Cup,” a FIFA spokesperson told Goal. “There is no doubt that the more the stadia are tested the better, and that is the reason we have asked for the delivery of stadia six months before the [World Cup].“Moreover, in a joint assessment between the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Local Organizing Committee and the construction company, it was decided that specific simulations will be done, in other words, tests of several areas of the stadium aiming to find solutions to potential challenges before the FIFA Confederations Cup.

“FIFA is for sure concerned as it is vital that the firm deadline of December 2013 be kept [ahead of the World Cup]. The host cities concerned, the federal government and stadium owners have committed to this delivery date and acknowledged that for the FIFA World Cup no compromises can be made in order not to jeopardize the successful staging of football’s flagship event. [This is] something which is not only crucial for FIFA but for the entire host nation.”
Brazil national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari this week aired his own concerns about the Maracana’s readiness for the Selecao’s forthcoming friendly fixture against England on June 2, which is scheduled to be the first game played in front of a full crowd at the newly refurbished venue.

“The Maracana is okay as long as the surrounding works are finished. The technical area, the playing field and locker rooms are excellent. All very nice, very good,” said Scolari.“But I cannot speak for the rest. It is the contractor performing the work who must speak of this and I do not know if everything will be ready by June 2.”

New reports in Brazil have confirmed that the substitutes' benches at all six Confederations Cup stadiums will have to either be adapted or rebuilt after been constructed contrary to FIFA specifications. All of the benches have been set up slightly below pitch level, despite the world governing body strictly specifying that such a design was not permitted. The realigned technical areas will mean that tickets will not be permitted for sale in the three to four rows of sets behind each bench due to the changing sight lines, further extending building and budgeting issues.

The current problems are just the latest chapter in a series of difficulties for the organizing committees over the preparations for the Confederations Cup and the World Cup. Setbacks have ranged from funding issues to the unfortunate death of a construction worker after taking a fall at the new Manaus Arena. And, after FIFA’s latest warning, there will be increased focus on the continued works going on around the country before the December deadline.

Conte wants Juventus to smash points record

    272538_heroa.jpg

The Italian is bullish in respect to his side's last two Serie A fixtures despite already being crowned champios Juventus coach Antonio Conte wants his side to smash the current points record for the club in Serie A with two wins in its final two games.

The Bianconeri currently sit on 86 points - five points behind the total that Fabio Capello's charges reached in 2006, though that Scudetto title was stripped from them over the subsequent match-fixing scandal.

After securing the Scudetto last weekend, Conte does not want his players to take their feet off the gas pedal and push for to break the club record.

"We want to try and continue what has been done so far, and finish the season in the best possible way," the 43-year-old told reporters at a press conference on Friday. "We need two wins for an important record, so that will be an additional motivation for us. If we can beat that it will be cause for further satisfaction.

"Last year we had a beautiful ceremony, so I urge the fans not to invade the pitch at the end of the game. We want to raise the trophy in front of our fans. We want to celebrate all together in the best way."

Juve's final two games of the campaign are at home to Cagliari this Saturday and then away to Sampdoria eight days later.

Cahill: Moyes the right choice for Manchester United

    279080_heroa.jpg

The former Everton star held high praise for the incoming Manchester United coach for whom he played for eight seasons at Goodison Park.Tim Cahill has thrown his unconditional support behind Manchester United's hiring of his former coach, David Moyes, as Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement.

The New York Red Bulls Designated Player starred at Everton from 2004-2012 under Moyes' guidance, developing a tight bond with the coach, who he said is a perfect candidate to take the torch at Old Trafford.

"I'm so happy for him and his family," Cahill said. "I think for the whole of what he's done in football in general, he deserves it.

"It's amazing. He's done so much in the game, and to be rewarded to have the opportunity at the start of his journey to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and try to do something special and winning something and continuing their level of success is the mark of the stature of a man he is and how much they respect him as a football manager."

Cahill thrived under Moyes at Goodison Park, appearing 278 times and scoring 68 goals, and still maintains a strong passion for the club. He grew close with Moyes on and off the field, and he conceded that it is a sad time for the Toffees to lose a manager of Moyes' stature.

"I think to [Everton] players, to the fans, everything really, he epitomizes the club," Cahill said. "I don't think there's a time that he never treated any player like his son and the fans like his friends. He was so approachable, had time for everyone, made time for anyone and it cared so much to him that his job was a 6-9 job. It basically took over his life, and that's what it means to you when you join a club like Everton.

"My experiences when he signed me and my relationship, he was like a father figure. He wasn't someone that always needed to praise you, but got the best out of you on and off the park. Always concerned for the welfare of my family, the welfare of my livelihood and also my football."

As for how Moyes will fare with Manchester United, Cahill has no qualms about the future success the Scot will have in filling Ferguson's hallowed shoes, and the Australian international feels that the Red Devils went about their hire the right way instead of going after bigger, more high-maintenance names.

"I think you look at two different elements of the management of Manchester United," Cahill said. "Do you want that manager that's been at the top level and bounced around the European clubs, bringing all his own staff in changing the footprint of what Manchester United is all about and maybe the caliber of players breaking wage structures even more, signing the big superstars? Or maintaining somebody that respects the club, respects the production of what they're doing, understanding the budget, coming the way David Moyes did having his 10-11 years experience at Everton, proving and outweighing any manager in finishing in the top six nearly every other year, fourth in the first year, always knocking at the door but not really having the budget to take him to the next level?"

If Moyes is to struggle at all from the start of his six-year contract with the club, the groans and criticisms of his hiring are likely to grow, but Cahill has preached patience, while also stating that there are two men capable of taking over from Ferguson: Pep Guardiola and Moyes.

"It's the biggest job in the world, and they're going to demand things straightaway," Cahill said. "The class of the players is already there, and the class of what they have and what they're probably going to bring in, you look at any other manager in the world who's suited for the job. I think other than Pep Guardiola there's only one man on the list, and that's David Moyes that would suit a club like Manchester United."

Cahill also said that Moyes' eye for talent is sharp, evidenced by the manager's signing the likes of Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Tim Howard and Joleon Lescott, among others. The added allure of playing for Manchester United will aid in Moyes' ability to attract top talent and Cahill believes he will continue to get the most out of the talent he has at his disposal.

"Being a player under his reign, it was always trying to get the best from your abilities," Cahill said. "None of us were really worldbeaters as in some of the stature of players on the world stage now, but what we had was an understanding of the club, and understanding of David Moyes. It's not just about wearing the shirt but wearing the shirt with pride and pouring your heart out for the club.

"If I know David Moyes, he's a very strong character, and he is somebody that is going to want to do things his way and obviously stay within the guidelines, but at the same really put his footprint on the club as someone who is very determined in winning something and doing something special with Man United.

"There's no one that I think deserved the job more than him."
