Roma 0-1 Lazio: Eagles edge Giallorossi to claim Coppa Italia in derby final

    283429hp2.jpg

Lazio claimed its sixth Coppa Italia by defeating capital city rival Roma 1-0 in the final at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Senad Lulic grabbed the only goal, slotting home with just 19 minutes remaining to spark wild celebrations in one half of the capital.

Both sides had played their part in a predictably frenetic opening to the game that resulted in early bookings for both Cristian Ledesma and Federico Balzaretti.

Lazio could have been ahead inside the opening four minutes, but Miroslav Klose fired into the side netting after Bogdan Lobont had been unable to hold onto a low strike from the dynamic Lulic.

Roma then could have taken the lead soon after when Erik Lamela and Marquinho combined to put Michael Bradley in on goal, only to see the American's subsequent strike trickle wide after he made a late run into the center of the box.

For the majority of the half, the Giallorossi looked the side most likely to make the breakthrough, but, for the most part, they were restricted to long-range efforts from Francesco Totti and Lamela. In the end, they were lucky to go in level at the break, with Klose surprisingly heading straight at Lobont after being picked out at the back post by Stefan Radu's deep cross from the left-hand side.

Moments later, the Germany international became the fifth player to enter the book, which merely underlined the fractious nature of a first half that ended just second after Mattia Destro had got his first sight of goal, with the striker just failing to climb high enough to get a clean connection on a brilliant cross from Marquinhos.

The Giallorossi continued to press in the secnod half, and Totti tested Federico Marchetti with a decent low strike before the Lazio goalkeeper was called upon again to get down low to stop a snap-shot from Destro.

A goal was coming - but it arrived at the other end, with Lulic tapping home at the back post after Lobont had deflected Antonio Candreva's cross into his path.

Roma tried to rally, throwing striker Pablo Osvaldo on in place of left back Federico Balzaretti, but it did not truly come close to forcing an equalizer. Indeed, it was Lazio that looked the more likely to net the game's next goal, with Lobont denying Stefano Mauri in an injury-time one-on-one.

In the end, though, Lulic's goal proved sufficient to earn the Biancocelesti their first meaningful piece of silverware since lifting the same trophy four years ago, while Bradley and his Roma teammates were denied a place in Europe following a sixth-place finish in Serie A.

Aubameyang yet to receive PSG offer

    207547_heroa.jpg

The striker has denied being contacted by the Ligue 1 champion and says he would prefer a move to England, Italy or Germany.Saint-Etienne star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he has yet to receive a concrete offer from reported suitor Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old has been bright in Ligue 1 this season, with his 19-goal haul beaten only by les Parisiens talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

His efforts have helped les Verts into fourth spot ahead of their final game of the season against Lille on Sunday, but he has refuted any suggestion he has already agreed a move to PSG.

"PSG is a possibility but I have yet to receive a concrete offer. Everything will be resolved after discussions with my leaders," he told 10 Sport.

"After the Lille game I will have a week before joining up with Gabon - hopefully everything will be decided soon."

Aubameyang joined Saint-Etienne in 2011 on the back of an initial loan spell after failing to make an impact in the first team at AC Milan.

Real Sociedad 3-3 Real Madrid: Basques salvage precious point against los Blancos

    283493hp2.jpg

Real Sociedad left it late to earn a valuable point with a 3-3 draw against a largely second-string Real Madrid side at Anoeta.

Gonzalo Higuain put los Blancos ahead inside six minutes and despite a valiant fight from the home side which saw it control the game for large parts. Jose Callejon added a second after the break. Xabi Prieto and Antoine Griezmann brought the Basques level and though it looked as if Sami Khedira had won it for Madrid late on, Prieto popped up with a priceless stoppage-time equalizer.
Jose Mourinho made six changes to the team which suffered defeat in the Copa del Rey final last weekend and it only took six minutes for one of those replacements to open the scoring.

Mikel Gonzalez hesitated in possession in front of his own goal and a clumsy pass saw him gift the ball straight to Higuain. The Argentine thanked him by racing through on goal to slot a cool finish past Claudio Bravo and into the bottom corner.

Montanier's men were not fazed by going behind and were only denied an equalizer by an irrepressible Diego Lopez. The former Sevilla keeper readjusted excellently to keep Griezmann's header out after 20 minutes and soon after he turned Imanol Agirretxe's nodded effort over the bar.

Shortly before the break, Alberto de la Bella latched onto Asier Illarramendi's chipped pass and rolled the ball across the box, but Griezmann stretched to get a touch and inadvertently took it away from Agirretxe who was awaiting a simple finish at the back post.

The second half continued in a similarly exciting manner, with Kaka failing to bend his shot on target from the top of the box before Lopez parried a thunderous cross-goal effort from Agirretxe.

But it was los Merengues who struck next as Kaka took his time on the left wing before finally threading in a magnificent cross upon spotting the run of Callejon who, one-on-one with the keeper, steered the ball into the corner of the net with his first touch.

Montanier's side was offered a route back into the game as Khedira handled the ball inside the area with 63 minutes played. Prieto was given the responsibility of the penalty and he showed nerves of steel to roll it into the bottom corner.

Six minutes later the game should have been level as Griezmann latched onto Agirretxe's scything through ball. The Frenchman rounded the keeper but was unable to wrap his foot around the ball and send it into the empty net.

Agirretxe was unfortunate not to find the net from Diego Ifran's free kick, but with 12 minutes remaining the Basques found their equalizer. A quick move down the right ended with Carlos Martinez sending a low ball to the back post where Griezmann finally got his goal with a simple tap in.

The game was only level for two minutes, though, as Germany internationals Khedira and Mesut Ozil combined with the former dropping a delightful finish over Bravo to regain his side's lead.

But the same defiant spirit that Sociedad had displayed earlier in the game came through in stoppage time as Prieto bundled in an equalizer at the far post despite Lopez's best efforts to deny him.

A draw still means that the San Sebastian outfit will need results elsewhere to go its way if the club is to secure a return to the Champions League, while Madrid falls 15 points behind Barcelona.

Espanyol 0-2 Barcelona: Alexis and Pedro decide derby in Blaugrana's favor

    283481hp2.jpg

Barcelona moved one step closer to equaling a league record for points in a season with a 2-0 victory over Espanyol at Estadi Cornella-El Prat on Sunday.

Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in sublime fashion after a quarter of an hour for the visiting side, which was largely in control for the majority of the game, before Wakaso Mubarak's red card with 10 minutes to go essentially ended any hopes of an Espanyol comeback.

In the 86th minute, substitutes Xavi and Pedro combined excellently for the latter to poke home the clinching goal - Barca's 52nd away from home this season - marking a new record in the Spanish top flight.

Another landmark looms, as the Blaugrana's triumph in the derbi Barceloni moves the club to within three points of Real Madrid's 100-point tally from last season - which will be met should the club beat Malaga in its league finale next Saturday.

Sanchez was joined in the forward line by Cesc Fabregas and David Villa. All three player's sub-par campaigns have seen them face uncertain Barca futures, particularly with the impending arrival of Neymar from Santos.

But Sanchez could hardly have done more to convince Tito Villanova of his worth to the team next season than his fantastic moment of individual brilliance to get the ball rolling after 14 minutes.

The Chilean seemed to be running into a dead end after combining with Villa, but with supreme agility, he evaded two quick-fire challenges from Diego Colotto and Raul Rodriguez, before bending an exquisite finish into the far side.

It was a fairly comfortable opening to the game for Barca, though as expected, Lionel Messi’s absence denied the club's attack a certain element of panache, as Espanyol was able to hold its ranks at the back.

The stadium was then united in a minute of applause after 22 minutes, to commemorate former player Dani Jarque, who passed away in 2009 with a heart attack at the age of 22.

Espanyol, however, could count itself lucky not to have conceded a second goal just after half an hour, when Alex Song clipped a beautiful pass over the top of the defense to former Arsenal teammate Fabregas, whose finish struck the post.

Andres Iniesta also came close to notching his team’s second goal with a powerful strike that whistled the wrong side of the post moments before the interval.

Though the home side played with more poise after the restart, it was Villanova’s men who nearly struck first in the second half. A brisk move on the edge of the 18-yard area found Villa in space 12 yards out, but the striker could not find the target.

The second half had a distinct ‘end of season’ feel, as Barca seemed in no hurry to extend the lead, while Espanyol could not find an extra gear in the attacking third.

However, the game was thrown right back into the fire in the 80th minute when Wakaso picked up a yellow card, protested furiously, and was promptly given a second booking to put an end to his night.

The home fans, already testy after a few perceive refereeing injustices, were brought to their feet in fury by the Ghanaian’s dismissal, but were silenced for good with four minutes remaining as Barca struck again.

Xavi played the ball high into the path of Pedro inside the area, and the forward took the pass in his stride to flick a wonderful finish into the back of the net and kill off the game for good.

Wenger confirms Arsenal interest in Lyon star Grenier

    281960_heroa.jpg

The Gunners boss reveals that he is "following" the France Under-21 international midfielder, comparing him to former Arsenal standout Samir Nasri.Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal's interest in Lyon star Clement Grenier.

The midfielder, a product of Lyon's club's youth academy, has represented France at Under-21s level and featured regularly throughout the 2012-13 Ligue 1 season. Wenger has admitted that the Gunners are monitoring the 22-year-old, who has drawn comparisons to Samir Nasri from the Emirates Stadium boss.

"We are following him," Wenger told Telefoot. "His intelligence of play pleases me. He has interesting qualities. He reminds me of Nasri."

The Arsenal boss also once again denied that he has had any contact with Paris Saint-Germain over the possibility of replacing Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.

"PSG never offered me the manager job. [Club president Nasser] Al-Khelaifi didn't contact me," Wenger said. "In a year? You must accept the idea that a coach who is named will continue the year after. This is how it works in football."

Aulas warns Arsenal that Grenier will cost the same as Gotze

    283538_heroa.jpg

The Frenchman has enjoyed a fine season at Olympique Lyonnais and his performances have attracted the attention of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas has warned Arsenal that it will have to pay 37 million euros in order to sign Clement Grenier this summer.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted on Sunday that he was interested in the attacking midfielder, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Stade Gerland.

"Clement said to me that he will give priority to Lyon if we qualify for the Champions League. So I prefer [to listen to] what he said, rather than what Arsene Wenger said," Aulas told Canal+.

"But, we have to make a financial effort to keep him. We will see after the level of our effort [that we have to do].

"If Arsene wants to have an idea of Grenier's price, I will tell him that it is the same as what Bayern Munich paid for Mario Gotze - around 37 million euros."

The Gunners are keen to strengthen their squad this summer after securing Champions League football ahead of local rival Tottenham on the final day of the season.

Hodgson: Manchester United-bound Zaha on 'threshold of something big

    262338_heroa.jpg

The England manager, who gave the Old Trafford-bound forward his first international cap in November, expects the youngster to get and take his chances with the Red Devils.Manchester United-bound forward Wilfried Zaha is on the verge of something big, according to England manager Roy Hodgson.

The Three Lions boss gave the youngster, who will play his last game for Crystal Palace in the Championship playoff final on Monday, his first senior cap in a friendly against Sweden in November, and he will join the reigning Premier League champion for next season after signing for Manchester United in the winter transfer window.

"I like Wilfried Zaha. He is a good player," Hodgson told the FA's official website. "I went to Palace not so long back to have a look at him and, of course, he has a massive move to Manchester United. It seems to me he is on the threshold of something big."

Though he cannot control how much playing time the forward will receive next season at Old Trafford, Hodgson expects him to impress.

"He will be given the opportunity," Hodgson said. "When a club like Manchester United is prepared to pay a lot of money for a player because they will help them to win things it is a tremendous boost to both confidence and ego.

"As coaches we can't do any more. After you have lit the touchpaper, all we can do is retire and hope they buzz."

Tito: Neymar chose Barca over money

    neymartearssantosfarewell20130526_576x324.jpg

Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova insists Neymar's decision to join the La Liga champions was based on "a sporting project and not a financial one".

Vilanova spoke following Barcelona's 2-0 defeat of derby rivals Espanyol, and praised the Brazilian starlet for choosing his club over the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich."We have to congratulate the technical staff for the signing of Neymar," Vilanvoa explained.

"It is an important signing. We have been very attentive for some time because he could have had other, and better, proposals. "I also have to congratulate Neymar for choosing a sporting project and not a financial one. I have confidence he will do well in Europe and he will help us to become even greater.

"Neymar is the player we were looking for. We asked two and a half years ago. The club has been very successful and has done things very well, as we did with Jordi Alba last year. He progressed very well with the rest. "His qualities are well known. All we are interested in is that he is a high-level player.

"If they say Neymar is a 'YouTube player' then it's a good thing, because he has had some great games and great goals. He has chosen Barcelona because he believes he can adapt well to our play. If he had been looking for money, there would have been nothing for Barca to do.

"It's a dream to have an attack like this. With so many better players we will have more chances to win. Now, we have to combine them in the best way, as we have done before. If Neymar comes it is because Barca are a long-term option for him."

Neymar played his final game for Santos on Sunday, starting in a 0-0 draw with Flamengo. Afterwards he revealed his excitement at the prospect of playing alongside Barcelona's stars."To play with Messi, Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta is a great honour," he said. "It's a dream to be going to Barca. I leave Santos through the front door. I hope to return to my second home [in future], which is Santos.

"I feel fantastic, very happy and grateful to Santos and I'm already thinking about Barca."Meanwhile, Vilanova - whose side remain on track to notch 100 competition points in La Liga next weekend - took time to wish outgoing Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho well as he prepares to exit the Santiago Bernabeu. The pair clashed on numerous occasions, including an infamous 'eye-poke' incident while Vilanova was Pep Guardiola's assistant.

"His arrival created a real buzz. He is one of the best coaches, and one of the most successful. I wish him well and wish him luck," Vilanova added. "He has always managed to win. It's in his own way, but he has always managed to win."

Falcao expected to seal Monaco move

    radamelfalcaocopaceleb20130518_576x324.jpg

Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao is to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of a €60 million switch to Monaco, according to widespread reports.

Monaco, funded by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, secured promotion back to Ligue 1 this month and have already agreed the double signing of Porto duo Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez for a reported €70 million. On Friday, Monaco assistant coach Jean Petit had confirmed to Radio RCN that Falcao, who had been strongly linked with Chelsea, was likely to follow.

"Yes, we are expecting Falcao and four or five other players of his quality," Petit said. "We have spoken and we continue to speak with Falcao and his representatives - negotiations are ongoing. We hope to seal a deal as soon as possible."Monaco need a player like Falcao because he can help us a lot and because he can attract other top players, and that's the best way of confirming out project is big and interesting. Signing Falcao is a big coup on sporting and media levels for French football."

It is now widely reported that the 27-year-old Colombia striker, who is set to play for Atletico on Sunday against Real Mallorca, is to attend a medical on Monday.
Atleti coach Diego Simeone has already given his blessing to the move, saying last week: "I have known him since he was a child and I wish him all the best. If he feels that he needs to make a move, I’ll be happy for him. If he stays with us, I’ll be happy too."

Palace, Watford ready for '£120m game'

    kevinphillipsgoalcrystalpalacevwatford20130208_576x324.jpg

Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway has labelled Monday's Championship play-off final against Watford as the "biggest game in the world".

The two Premier League wannabes will square-off in a match that is expected to generate in the region of £120 million for the winning club, and is often referred to as the richest game in football.According to accountancy firm Deloitte, the winners at Wembley will see a total revenue increase of £60 million next year while, with parachute payments also included, they would pick up £120 million even if they fall straight back into the Championship.

With the financial rewards at stake, combined with the status of playing in one of the world's greatest leagues, the final is often seen as a life-or-death situation for many clubs."It is absolutely the biggest game in the world. It's the size of the prize," Holloway told the Daily Star. "The last time I fought for this it was £90 million, now it's more.

"That's why people are buying Championship clubs and trying to do it. They're throwing money at it, they want success. Look at Cardiff. They've had seven goes, so well done to them this year. But if they hadn't made it, how much would they have owed?"And Palace chairman Steve Parish could not agree more with his manager.

"There is a crazy amount riding on the game," Parish told the Star. "The gulf between the teams that have been in the Premier recently and those that haven't will just be huge."You are almost playing for the right to be in a league when the music stops and the money comes in."

Watford manager Gianfranco Zola is also well aware of the importance of the match, however, he feels it is vital that his players do not become overawed by the situation and stick to their usual game."It'll be an unbelievable day," he told the club's official website. "There will be 34,000 Watford fans. I'm sure it will be very exciting for the players to see so many supporters, and the whole atmosphere will be thrilling, it'll be great.

"All we'll have to do is make sure we are not over the top - we have to play our football. It will be important to have that same attitude because if we keep it that way our qualities will come through, because we have quality in the team.
"We have to make sure we have the perfect balance. I wouldn't expect anything more or anything less. We will have to do the things we have been able to do all year. I'm not asking them to do anything special and they know that.

"It won't be easy for us for sure, because Crystal Palace are a very good side. If we want to win, we have to beat them, because they won't give anything away."

    Agent: Lewi's Bayern move imminent

    robertlewandowskicelebrealmadrid_576x324.jpg

Robert Lewandowski will complete his move to Bayern Munich, disappointing the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea.Speaking to Polish TV station TVN, the Borussia Dortmund striker’s agent Cezary Kucharski claimed the transfer saga could come to an end within a fortnight.

"I will not pretend otherwise," Kucharski said on Monday when asked if his client will join Bayern. "Robert wants to go and will go. I cannot tell when he will go, or the amount of the transfer. It is a matter of a week, two, maybe three."For us, the case is clear, but he has not signed yet. The clubs must reach an agreement. I am hoping they stick by the word they have given Robert.

"Robert feels well in Dortmund and he has got an outstanding coach and incredible fans. But if there is the chance to play for another club we want to take it."Kucharski echoed the words of outgoing Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, who had claimed that Bayern "will not have to wait too long" for Lewandowski during the post-match press conference on Saturday.

While Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke had responded that Heynckes should focus on winning the DFB-Pokal next weekend and indicated they had no official offer for Lewandowski, who scored 10 goals during Dortmund’s 2012 Champions League campaign, including four in the first semi-final against Real Madrid.

Poland international Robert Lewandowski joined Borussia Dortmund from Lech Poznan in 2010. He scored 54 goals in 98 Bundesliga apperances for this year’s Champions League runners-up and added a further 20 in Europe and DFB-Pokal.
