Man United In Talks With Barcelona Over Interest In £43m Midfield Pair

Cesc-Fabregas.png

Manchester United have begun the first steps of what would be a sensational return to the Premier League for Cesc Fabregas according to ESPN.

The Spanish midfielder moved to Barcelona from Arsenal in a huge £35 million deal in 2011. Fabregas was captain of the Gunners at the time and is still much loved by the club’s fans.

But that may not last much longer should Fabregas return to English shores to pull on the red shirt of Arsenal’s bitter rivals United.

That move came a step closer after United made initial contact with the Catalan giants over a potential move.

New United boss David Moyes is keen to put his own stamp on the team having taken over from the now retired Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Everton boss has reportedly identified centre midfield as a position in urgent need of reinforcement following the retirement of Paul Scholes, the inconsistent form of Brazilian midfielder Anderson and the ongoing injury problems of Scotland star Darren Fletcher.

Barcelona are reportedly willing to listen to bids for Fabregas as the Spaniard has failed to make much of an impact of the first team since his arrival at the Nou Camp.

United are hoping to tempt Fabregas away from Spain with a bid of £25 million.

ESPN claim that Man United are in discussions with Barcelona over both Fabregas and £18m rated Thiago Alcantara.

Guti: We can't judge Neymar on reputation

    283056_heroa.jpg

The 36-year-old says the Brazil international still has a lot to prove and believes Jose Mourinho has been a disappointment to Real Madrid supporters Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti is reserving judgement on Barcelona star Neymar until he reproduces his Santos form in Europe.

All eyes have been firmly focused on the 21-year-old in recent days after sealing his long-awaited switch to Camp Nou, with the youngster set to be unveiled to the public on Monday.

Following the news of Neymar's imminent arrival, a series of players and personalities within the game have predicted future success for the star, but Guti is refusing to board the bandwagon until the youngster justifies his reputation.

"He is a great signing, but you have to wait and see how he adapts to the European game," he told Sport ES. "Both Madrid and Barcelona have had those big signings in the past and they have not proved as effective in Europe as other continents.

"He has shown what he can do in Brazil, but now he has to prove he can do it here because European football is very different."

The 36-year-old, who spent 15 years with the Blancos, went on to address Jose Mourinho's imminent departure from the club and believes the Portuguese "has been a disappointment to all Madristas."

"We expected a lot from him. Not only titles, but a little more humility would have been good for everyone and the club. He has been a disappointment to all Madristas.

"I wish him the best in the future. I have always said he's a great coach and I'm sure he would have won more with Real Madrid had he stayed a little longer."

Guti went on to approve of Real Madrid's reported pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale.

He added: "I think Real Madrid is a smart club who always want to sign the best players, and he [Bale] is one of them."

    Leonardo handed nine-month ban

The 43-year-old was issued with the lengthy suspension on Thursday after he was adjudged to have deliberately barged referee Alexandre Castro earlier this month
Paris Saint-Germain CEO Leonardo has been slapped with a nine-month ban by the Professional Football League (LFP) for his part in the fracas which followed the 1-1 draw with Valenciennes earlier this month.

The sporting director is now forbidden from sitting on the bench, going into the referee's dressing room and attending league meetings. However, he can go into the team's dressing room and can still negotiate transfers.

The ban will apply to domestic games and therefore will not affect Champions League encounters.

The Ligue 1 winner was also handed a three-point suspension, which will come into effect at any stage next season should another of the club's officials become embroiled in a similar case.

The former Brazil international, whose suspension started on May 8 and will end on Feb. 8, 2014, appeared to barge referee Alexandre Castro in the tunnel at Parc de Princes on May 5.

Leonardo, 43, had pleaded his innocence throughout the investigation, but the Disciplinary Committee has asserted that the former Milan coach acted intentionally and subsequently issued the lengthy ban.

PSG has announced its intention to appeal the decision.

Olsen: Eriksen is ready for the big time

    283968_heroa.jpg

The Denmark boss says the Ajax youngster is set for a move to a European giant amid speculation linking him with a switch to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund this summer Ajax attacker Christian Eriksen is ready for a move to a bigger club, according to Denmark coach Morten Olsen.

Speculation has intensified in recent weeks over where the 21-year-old will be plying his trade next season, with some believing he is being lined up by Borussia Dortmund in a bid to replace Bayern Munich-bound Mario Gotze.

Olsen, who coaches the starlet at international level, says Eriksen has come of age and is well-equipped to handle a move to one of Europe's finest clubs.

"This is the right time for him to go," Olsen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. "There are many players who moved to a top club too early, but Christian is really ready. "He played great against Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, PSV and Feyenoord this season, so maybe that's where Dortmund's interest stems from."

In addition to BVB coach Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is also rumored to be a fond admirer of the Denmark international - whose Ajax deal expires next summer - but last month the Dutch champion denied reports of a deal being struck by the Reds to bring the youngster to Anfield.

Balotelli ridicules Mafia drug dealing claims

    280074_heroa.jpg

The AC Milan striker's name cropped up in a criminal court case in Italy, but the striker has branded suggestions of his involvement as shameful Mario Balotelli has ridiculed suggestions from an Italian drug informant on Thursday that he dealt drugs "as a joke" in 2010.

The accusation stems from the AC Milan striker's visit to Naples three years ago, when he was shown around the notorious Scampia neighborhood by people associated with the Mafia - although the 22-year-old has insisted in the past that he was unaware of the criminal connections in the region.

At a court hearing in Italy, Armando De Rosa told prosecutors that Balotelli requested to peddle narcotics and said that the buyer of drugs was unaware of the footballer's identity, claiming, "We asked the client if he recognized Balotelli but he didn't have a clue [who he was]."

In response, the former Manchester City man slammed the media for reporting these suggestions and is of the opinion that his name is being dragged through the dirt to increase interest in the money-laundering case.

"AHAHAHAHA, they said I used prostitutes, next time maybe they'll say I take it up the...," the Italian wrote on his Twitter account, before subsequently deleting the tweet. "Be ashamed. Don't use me to boost your audience."

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli refused to be drawn on the subject, insisting Balotelli's comments would suffice given the "sensitive" nature of the issue.

“It seems to me that Mario has responded, so there’s nothing else to say,” he told a press conference on Thursday.

Prandelli said the subject "does not interest me at all" and that Balotelli will talk at the right time.

“This is a sensitive topic, these are serious matters and here we are talking about a joke," Prandelli said.

“We would always want to talk about football in a critical manner, but when dealing with other topics there is always trouble. These are serious issues and it is unclear if these are allegations or otherwise, but for us, what applies is what Mario has said."

Anti-Mafia investigators originally questioned Balotelli in September 2011 over his visit to Scampia, which he claimed he visited for "cultural reasons." There has never been any suggestion that the ex-Inter player has been involved in criminal activity.

Suarez confirms desire to leave Liverpool

The Uruguay international has hinted that he could move to another league following constant negative press in England Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has confirmed his desire to leave England amid rumors of interest from Real Madrid.

On Wednesday, Goal revealed the Uruguay international has refused to commit his future to Brendan Rodgers' side with the 26-year-old unhappy with his portrayal by the English media.

Liverpool is ready to listen to offers for Suarez, who is keen to play Champions League football, despite the club's public stance that the forward is not for sale.

Suarez insists the English media has created an environment he does not wish to live in and is open to moving elsewhere.

"I have a daughter and a family and I want to take them out of the current atmosphere," he told reporters. "I have feelings and I would like to go to another league.

"They [the media] treated me badly and it would be understandable if one day I leave the club."

The striker was named Liverpool Fans' Player of the Year after scoring 30 goals in all competitions, but he feels he will never be truly appreciated in the Premier League due to the way he is represented.

"In England, I was never going to win any prize because of how they treated me," he said.

Julio Cesar confirms talks with English clubs amid Arsenal rumors

    269290_heroa.jpg

he 33-year-old is eager to seal his place in the Brazil squad ahead of the 2014 World Cup and has been heavily linked with a move to the Gunners QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar has confirmed he is in talks with English clubs over a move away from Loftus Road this summer.

Hoops boss Harry Redknapp indicated recently that the Brazil international would be allowed to leave, rather than spend the season prior to the 2014 World Cup playing in the Championship.

Arsenal has been heavily linked with the 33-year-old, and Cesar has now fuelled speculation that the Gunners are among the clubs pursuing his signature.

"There are indeed talks with some teams, but nothing definitive,” he told Globo Esporte. “This is the Confederations Cup moment, I have to focus on doing a good work for the national team.

"I won't name the teams as it would not be ethical since I am under contract with Queens Park Rangers. I let people responsible for my career deal with it."

Cesar is in the Brazil squad for the Confederations Cup and could be in the side to face England in Rio on June 2.

I've learned from my QPR mistakes, says new Stoke boss Hughes

The new Potters manager claims the criticism he received during his time at Loftus Road will inspire him to bring success to his new role at the Britannia Stadium.
New Stoke City manager Mark Hughes insists he has learned from the mistakes he made during his time at QPR.

The 49-year-old Hughes was announced as Tony Pulis' successor at the Britannia Stadium on Thursday morning, having been out of work since being sacked by QPR in November. Hughes departed Loftus Road with the club bottom of the Premier League and without a win after 12 games.

But the Welshman, who has signed a three-year contract with Stoke, believes he should not be judged solely on his time at QPR."It was a very difficult time at QPR and mistakes were made," Hughes told reporters. "I made mistakes, which I have learned from. I had the task of keeping them up in the Premier League and I did that but 12 games later I lost my job.

"That was understandable and was a regret. If I had been given more time I think I would have turned it around. We tried to run before we could walk and I hold my hands up. But this is about the here and now and moving Stoke forward and getting the success we all want.Hughes was previously boss at Blackburn, Manchester City and Fulham and says he is motivated to prove those who are judging him based on his horrid stint at QPR are wrong.

"I've had around 270 games managing at Premier League level and in recent months people have wanted to define my managerial career based on 12 games at the start of last season," Hughes said. "I've kept my counsel for six months but now is not the time to speak about it. Maybe this gives me more motivation to prove people wrong. I've listened to what people have said about me and I can assure everybody I will use that as motivation to do well at Stoke."

Figo: Madrid right to get rid of Mourinho

    62663_heroa.jpg

The ex-Blancos midfielder believes the coach had outstayed his welcome at the Liga club but insists his compatriot was not necessarily wrong in his decisions.
Former Real Madrid midfielder Luis Figo believes that the time was right for Jose Mourinho and the Santiago Bernabeu side to part ways.

Mourinho will depart the Blancos in June after three years in charge, having joined from Inter in the summer of 2010 and taken the club to three Champions League semifinals, one league triumph and one Copa del Rey trophy.

His fall-out with a number of high-profile Madrid players - most notably captain Iker Casillas - has contributed to his exit from the Bernabeu dugout, and Figo believes it is the right time for his compatriot to move on as he nears a return to the Premier League with Chelsea.

"It was to be expected," Figo told reporters at a charity event. "I believe it is right for them to bid farewell [to Mourinho].

"Some people will not like it, others will think it's the right thing, but the reality in life is you cannot please all the people. The fans should try to be fair and wait to see what happens next."

Mourinho's benching of Casillas in favor of January signing Diego Lopez has resulted in a lengthy dressing-room dispute, but Figo thinks the facts have been exaggerated and that the coach had legitimate reasons for his actions.

"They are my friends," Figo said of Mourinho and the Spain goalkeeper. "They are of the age to be able to work things out.

"Mourinho's decisions were professionally and technically sound. You might not like it but [as a player] you have to accept and take it in the best way possible for the good of the club."

Madrid faces Osasuna on Sunday in the final game of the Primera Division season, having already secured second place behind champion Barcelona.

Neymar to be presented as a Barcelona player on Monday

The Brazil forward has sealed his move to Camp Nou from Santos and will undergo a medical before an official unveiling after the international match against England.Neymar will be officially unveiled as a Barcelona player on Monday after he has played for Brazil in its match against England this weekend.

The Santos forward is currently with the national squad as it prepares for next month's FIFA Confederations Cup, but the Brazilian Football Federation has granted him permission to fly to Spain after the clash with Roy Hodgson's side on Sunday evening to complete the formalities of his move.

Firstly, Neymar will undergo a rigorous medical before putting pen to paper on his five-year contract, which has already been agreed along with the 28 milion euro transfer fee. Then, the 21-year-old will be presented at Camp Nou for photos in a Barca kit in an event both fans and the media have been invited to, before he takes part in a press conference.

After the formalities are completed, Neymar will travel back home to re-join the Brazil squad, which also has a friendly against France before the Confederations Cup opener against Japan on June 15.

"I have butterflies in my stomach. This is a dream come true. To play with [Lionel] Messi and other amazing footballers at Barcelona has made me very eager to arrive there," Neymar said after the deal was announced. "It was a tough decision but I decided together with my family. They helped me amazingly. I'm very happy but at the same time I am sad for leaving a team [Santos] I have been with for years. I have to seize the moment."

Fellaini: 'My destiny is with Everton'

    259797_heroa.jpg

Despite speculation the Belgium international may follow outbound manager David Moyes to Old Trafford, he insists he is happy and committed to the Goodison Park club.Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini has insisted his "destiny is with Everton" amid rumors linking him with a move to Manchester United.

The Belgium international has been tipped to follow manager David Moyes to Old Trafford in the summer as the Scot aims to make his mark after taking over from the retired Sir Alex Ferguson. But the 25-year-old Fellaini, who scored against the USA Wednesday night, insists he is happy on Merseyside and has committed his future to Everton despite losing the manager who brought him to the club.

"My destiny is with Everton, it’s as simple as that," Fellaini told the Daily Mirror. "After that, you never know what can happen, but we still speak of one of the greatest English clubs."

The Toffees finished sixth in the Premier League this season, ahead of local rivals Liverpool, and Fellaini believes whoever takes over at Goodison Park will inherit a club ready for success.

"The framework and the basics are there," Fellaini said. "It is in this sense that I mean the departure of the coach does not change anything for me. Despite everything he has done for the club, we always have enough quality to continue to shine.

"Honestly, the departure of the coach does not change. He received a good challenge and I understand that he has accepted. But he never told me about his project to take me with him to United. It is only in the press that I read it."

Leverkusen GM: We have a deal with Chelsea for Schurrle

    278224_heroa.jpg

The Bundesliga club's general manager has revealed an agreement that will see the 22-year-old move to Stamford Bridge, with Kevin De Bruyne heading the other way on loan.Chelsea has an agreement to sign Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen with Kevin De Bruyne heading in the opposite direction on loan, according to the Bundesliga club's general manager, Wolfgang Holzhauser.

The Blues have been trailing the Germany international for some time, though recent reports have suggested Borussia Dortmund's interest in signing De Bruyne permanently might scupper any potential deal. Earlier this month, De Bruyne, who spent the last season on loan with Werder Bremen, fanned the flames of speculation by admitting he would be open to joining Jurgen Klopp's Champions League finalists, who are looking to replace the departed Mario Gotze.

But Holzhauser insists the terms of the deal with Leverkusen for the transfer of Schurrle have been agreed upon, and he expects Chelsea to honor its word.

"We have an agreement with Chelsea," Holzhauser told RP. "They buy Schurrle for a set transfer fee and we get De Bruyne on loan for free for one season. I expect Chelsea to adhere to what has been agreed."

Following Leverkusen's 1-0 victory over Hamburg on the final day of the Bundesliga season, Schurrle revealed he believed he had played his last game for the club. He'll be part of the German national team contingent that will face the U.S. national team on Sunday. De Bruyne played a large role in Belgium's 4-2 victory over the USA Wednesday, assisting on two goals.

    Abidal announces Barcelona exit

The Frenchman will bid farewell to the Primera Division champions this summer as his expiring contract will not be renewed.Eric Abidal has announced that he will leave Barcelona this summer after a six-year spell at Camp Nou.

The 33-year-old joined the club from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2007 and had since made nearly 200 official appearances for the Blaugrana, winning four Liga titles and two Champions Leagues in the process. Health problems largely kept Abidal out of action in the past two seasons as he was diagnosed with a tumor in his liver in March 2011 and underwent a transplant last year.

"This is a difficult day for me. I have spent six years at Barcelona and it has been a very intense period together with my teammates," Abidal said at a press conference. "I was keen to continue at Barcelona, but the club have different plans and I have to respect that. I am leaving the club this summer, but I will be back here."

Club president Sandro Rosell, meanwhile, stressed that he hopes Abidal will return to Barcelona once he hangs up his boots.

"Abidal has been at Barcelona for six years and he's part of our history. This is not a goodbye. The doors will always be open for Eric," Rosell said. "When Eric retires, he will become the director of Barcelona's schools around the world."

Abidal has been linked with a return to Lyon this summer, while Monaco have also shown an interest in signing the left back, but he has yet to make a final decision on where he will continue his career.

"I have a number of offers, but I need more time to think about them," Abidal said.

Lukaku set for talks to decide Chelsea future

    281811_heroa.jpg

The striker would like to be at Chelsea next season, but he admits he may have to consider other options if it is unlikely he will be a regular fixture in the manager's plans.Romelu Lukaku said he will hold talks with the new Chelsea manager to decide where he plays his football next season.

It has been widely speculated Jose Mourinho has agreed to return to Stamford Bridge and will be that new manager, and one of his first tasks will be to decide the fate of the Belgian who scored 17 Premier League goals last season while on loan at West Brom and starred for his country against the USA in Wednesday's 4-2 victory in Cleveland.

Lukaku insists his dream remains to play for Chelsea, but he admits he may have to go elsewhere once again to fulfil his immediate need for first-team football.

"My future is up to me and the manager," Lukaku told talkSPORT. "First we need to have a conversation about what his plans are and then we'll go from there. "I'm ready to go there and do my best, because my first ambition is to play at Chelsea, but I have to be realistic.

"I'm 20 years old and I need to play, so we'll see what will happen."I'm very proud to be a Chelsea player. I've had a very good season on loan, and I will go back and show my qualities.

"Hopefully I will stay there but in football you never know. We'll have to see what will happen in the future."

Shaqiri not leaving Bayern for Dortmund, says agent

    239391_heroa.jpg

The Swiss youngster had been linked with a move from the Allianz Arena to the Westfalenstadion, but his representative says he is not looking to leave.Xherdan Shaqiri’s brother and agent Erdin has insisted that there is no truth in the reports linking the Bayern Munich attacker with a move to Borussia Dortmund.

A report in Sport Bild on Wednesday suggested that BVB coach Jurgen Klopp sees the Switzerland international as a good replacement for Bayern-bound Mario Gotze, but Erdin Shaqiri has made it clear that his brother has no intention to leave his current club any time soon.

"This is nothing but a hypothesis. Either the people at Sport Bild know more than I do, or they have a psychic working for them who can predict stuff that clubs and players don't even know yet,” the winger’s representative told Blick. Xherdan has no reason to change clubs. He's among Bayern's 14 main players and is on the verge of breaking into the starting XI.”

Shaqiri joined Bayern from Basel in the summer of 2012 and has since made 38 appearances for the European champions, scoring eight goals in the process. The attacker has a contract with Bayern until June 2016.
