Rooney leaving Manchester United would be a surprise - Owen
    296827_heroa.jpg

The England international's former Old Trafford colleague understands his frustration but still believes that it would be a shock should he be allowed to depart for Chelsea Michael Owen says that he would be "surprised" if former team-mate Wayne Rooney were to leave Manchester United.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Chelsea had made a bid for the England international, which was duly rejected by the Premier League champions, as Jose Mourinho makes him his final summer transfer target.

Owen played with Rooney during his three-year spell at Old Trafford between 2009 and 2012 and, although he does not expect the 27-year-old to depart, he understands the forward's frustration at his talismanic role being eclipsed by Robin van Persie.

"At the height of my career, I wouldn't have been too happy being on the bench a lot of the time, I would have wanted to be playing all the time," the former Red Devil told talkSPORT.

"He's still only 27, he's still a world-class player and I'm sure he won't want to be sitting on the bench.

"That's his decision and you're options change as your fitness changes and your age changes, or whatever it might be, but he's in his prime, it's a World Cup year, he won't want to be sat waiting around on the bench so it remains to be seen whether that will be the case.

"I would be surprised if he left Manchester United but I can understand him wanting to play every game at his age.

"I think this has been brewing for a little while," Owen added. "When Robin van Persie first signed, maybe Wayne wasn't feeling as if he was the top man anymore and, when you're a player of his calibre, then you need to feel wanted to produce your best.

"You need to be the one that everyone counts on to score the goals and, when he was dropped by Sir Alex Ferguson for the Real Madrid game last year, that would have hurt his pride and everything else. I think we're seeing a knock-on effect of that now."

Low: Dortmund can challenge for Bundesliga

    285361_heroa.jpg

The Germany coach believes BVB will offer much tougher resistance as they aim to wrestle the title back from Bayern Munich in the upcoming season
Joachim Low believes Borussia Dortmund will be more competitive in next season's Bundesliga as they have the ability to "annoy" rivals Bayern Munich.

The Schwarzgelben finished 25 points behind the Bavarians last year and despite losing Mario Gotze to Bayern they have strengthened with the acquisition of Werder Bremen defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos; and attacking duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Shakhtar Donetsk and Saint-Etienne, respectively.

And the Germany coach thinks they will provide a much sterner test during the 2013-14 campaign.

“Of course, Bayern go into the new season as the favourite, but I always trust that BVB can annoy FCB," Low told a Bundesliga special issue of Sport 1.

The 53-year-old also spoke about the state of German football, specifically the Bundesliga becoming the Europe’s premier domestic competition, but he had words of caution.

"From a change of power, I can only say the league has solidified its standing in the last three or four years," he added.

The Bundesliga is still number three behind the Primera Division and the Premier League, those are the bare facts.

“A changing of the guard will only happen if we are number one, namely, for a longer period of time.”

The national team coach is fully aware of the hard work which lies ahead for his side before the World Cup in Brazil next year and he refused to be drawn on any predictions about his team's chances of lifting the trophy.

"No one can guarantee to be the world champions no nation is that presumptuous. For us only the title matters. Look at Spain, which has won the last three major tournaments in a row, you will not hear anything from them.”

    Paris Saint-Germain seal Digne deal

    288955_heroa.jpg

The former Lille standout has been courted all summer by the Ligue 1 champions and on Wednesday put pen to paper on a five-year deal Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the signing of Lille left-back Lucas Digne for a fee believed to be in the region of €15 million.

Digne, 19, has signed a five-year deal with les Parisiens, having long been linked with a move away from les Dogues, with PSG and Monaco both vying for his signature this summer.

However, Laurent Blanc's men have won the race for the prodigious full-back, who starred for the France Under-20 team which won the World Cup in Turkey earlier in July.

"Playing at Paris Saint-Germain with exceptional players is a childhood dream and a great joy. After becoming a world champion, I had a fantastic summer. I thank the club officials for their confidence," Digne told the club's official website.

PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi added: "Lucas Digne, a rising star of French football and recent winner of the U20 World Cup, was the subject of transfer interest from a number of major clubs and has chosen Paris Saint-Germain to continue his progression on the European stage.

"We are delighted to welcome this young French player into our squad."

A mainstay of the Lille side last campaign, Digne will be expected to compete with former Barcelona man Maxwell for a place in Blanc's XI.

The left-back, who appeared 44 times for Lille last season, will wear the No.21 shirt forPSG.

Varane returns to Real Madrid training

    266144_heroa.jpg

The young Frenchman underwent knee surgery at the tail end of last season and made his comeback to full practice with the rest of his team-mates on Wednesday
Real Madrid have confirmed Raphael Varane has returned to full training after missing the end of the season due to knee surgery.

The young Frenchman fell awkwardly during the 1-1 draw with Espanyol on May 11 and was forced to sit out the remainder of his side's fixtures, including the Copa del Rey final.

It was initially thought he would be out of action for around six weeks, but he has returned to full training slightly late.

The 20-year-old attended the beginning of the session alongside his team-mates and new coach Carlo Ancelotti, before continuing to exercise alone in the gym.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso and new signing Asier Illarramendi are nursing their way back from their own respective knocks.

Varane enjoyed a breakthrough season at the Bernabeu last term, displacing Pepe from Jose Mourinho's first-choice XI prior to his injury.

Madrid returned to pre-season training on Monday.

Hummels ready for senior Dortmund role

    281585_heroa.jpg

The defender is determined to improve on his form from last season and take more responsibility at Signal Iduna Park as BVB go in search of Bundesliga glory
Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels says he is ready to step into a senior role at the club.

The Germany international has been a key part of the team since sealing a permanent move from Bayern Munich in 2009 following a successful loan spell at Signal Iduna Park.

And he says he is ready to take more responsibility as Jurgen Klopp's men look to wrestle back the Bundesliga title from the Bavarians.

"It's important for me to take responsibility," he told Der Westen.

"This means that I am not hiding in games. If I notice that somethng does not work in the team, then I change the situation for the better.

"You have to do this if you have played for the team for a long time as I have in recent years. And I will do it gladly."

The 24-year-old went on to admit that he was far from happy with his showings last term as he made a number of high-profile mistakes, most notably in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

"I was not satisfied with my performances last term," he continued. "It was far below what I had envisioned and far below where I have to be. The number of blunders...

"These are things that are unbearable for me. Next season will be different. I'm taking every friendly, every training session, as seriously as a real game.

"At this level, there are many small factors that can make you play better or worse. A bad attitude has no place here.

"[I want to be] better than last season. Second place is okay, but there were many unnecessary defeats, many goals we should not have conceded."

Mourinho: Rooney is Chelsea's only target

    296755_heroa.jpg

The Blues boss has confirmed his side have made an official bid for the England international and says the club are focusing their attentions solely on the striker
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is the club's only transfer target this summer.

The Premier League champions have rejected an opening bid from the Blues for the striker and insist he is not for sale, with the two clubs at odds over whether players were involved in the bid.

However, speaking after Chelsea's 1-0 friendly win over Thailand All-Stars in Bangkok, Mourinho made it clear that he wanted to bring Rooney to Stamford Bridge.

"I think that this situation is clear - nothing is a secret anymore," he told reporters.

"The official bid is just about a certain amount of money and doesn't involve players.

"We want the player. We made the bid and now we have nothing more to say.

"Now it's up to Manchester United."

The Chelsea boss was then asked if the club had made other bids, to which Mourinho replied: "No, and we won't."

He was then asked whether it is now "Rooney or bust", replying: "yes."

Rooney's future at Old Trafford has been up in the air since Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he had asked to leave the club, while Mourinho had previously implored the wantaway striker to "do what makes him happy".

Sevilla confirm Negredo will join Manchester City

    260598_heroa.jpg

The Spanish side have announced that the striker will move to the Etihad Stadium, subject to a medical, and that he will say his goodbyes at specially arranged farewell gathering Sevilla have confirmed that striker Alvaro Negredo will play for Manchester City next season.

A €25 million plus add-ons deal has been agreed for the striker and the Spanish side have now confirmed the deal with a statement on their website.

"It's official: Alvaro Negredo is a Manchester City player, short of doing the medical tests," read the statement.

"Sevilla has organised a farewell gathering for the player at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan this evening at 18.30BST, so that those who have been his team-mates can say goodbye before leaving for (the pre-season tour of) South America.

"The Sevilla president, Jose Maria del Nido, will accompany the striker at this farewell."

Del Nido confirmed earlier on Wednesday that Negredo was set for a move to the Etihad Stadium, after previously stating there was a "one per cent" chance of him making the switch to City this summer.

"We are about to complete the sale of Negredo to City. If all goes well he will say bye this afternoon at the Sanchez Pizjuan," he told reporters.

"City are signing a great player. For Sevilla and Negredo it is a major operation. It is the contract of his life."

Goal understands that Sevilla could receive a further £2.6m in performance-related bonuses on top of the £21.7m fee paid by City up front.

Terms between the clubs were ratified on Tuesday morning and the 27-year-old is set to see his salary doubled to around £75,000-a-week.

The Spain international scored 25 goals in La Liga last season and had been linked with moves to Everton and Tottenham earlier in the summer.

Negredo will become the second player to make the switch from Sevilla to City this month, after Jesus Navas moved to the Etihad for £18.5m.

City are also closing in on Fiorentina attacker Stevan Jovetic, after a €27m deal was agreed on Monday, which was exclusively revealed by Goal, and it is understood that an official announcement over both signings could from the Premier League club on Saturday or Sunday.

Argentina captaincy has helped Messi, says Sabella

    291099_heroa.jpg

The Albiceleste boss feels that the armband has made the Barcelona star a mature player and has lauded his willingness to play all the time Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella believes that his decision to hand Lionel Messi the Albiceleste captaincy has paid dividends.

The Barcelona star was once criticised for failing to replicate his Blaugrana performances for his national team, but the 26-year-old now has 18 goals in 21 games under Sabella.

The former Estudiantes boss gave Messi the armband in 2011 and is delighted with how he has done since.

"Messi's a great genius, it goes without saying," Sabella is quoted as saying by Sport.

"He is always ready, always wants to play. He's very clever. The captaincy and maturity have been very good for Leo.

"He's a source of pride for the national team."

Messi scored a hat-trick for his Argentina in their recent friendly win over Guatemala.

Barca, PSG & Man Utd bid for Marquinhos - agent

    294885_heroa.jpg

The representative of the Roma centre-back has told Brazilian media that his client has attracted offers from three top European sides this summer The agent of Roma starlet Marquinhos has claimed Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have bid for his client.

The defender, 19, impressed in Serie A last season, making 26 appearances in his debut season in Europe following a move from Corinthians in 2012.

With the three European giants chasing Marquinhos, the Brazilian's representative Roberto Calenda hinted that a deal could be reached this summer should the Giallorossi consider a bid to be to their liking.

"There are offers from PSG, Manchester United and Barcelona," Calenda is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.

"Roma have told us that there is a possibility of selling the player for the right price and we will respect the decision they make.

"I can confirm that I was in Barcelona but that was a long time ago and Marquinhos is not my only client."

The capital-based Italian club have recently bolstered their defensive ranks with the purchase of Medhi Benatia from Udinese.

'Rooney signing would guarantee Chelsea the title' - McQueen

    212448_heroa.jpg

The former Manchester United defender has warned David Moyes against selling the England striker to a rival but accepts that he is on his way out at Old Trafford.Manchester United legend Gordon McQueen believes Chelsea would be guaranteed Premier League title winners if they were to sign Wayne Rooney.

The Blues were knocked back with their initial £10 million plus Juan Mata or David Luiz bid on Tuesday evening, although are expected to increase their offer as Jose Mourinho looks to land the England striker.

And McQueen is adamant it would be a costly mistake if Rooney is allowed to join a Premier League rival, insisting that the former Everton forward could hurt David Moyes' side in their quest to retain the title.

He told Goal: "Even though I'm resigned to Rooney going now, it's crucial for United that he goes abroad and doesn't stay in the Premier League where he can really hurt us.

"There are only three clubs in this country that could afford him. He won't go to Manchester City and I don't think he's Arsenal-bound, but what concerns me is that if he heads to Stamford Bridge then that could make the difference in the title race.

"Last season we somehow managed to get our hands on Robin van Persie from Arsenal and I said at the time that would guarantee us the title.

"I have a feeling that a Rooney deal with Chelsea could have the same impact this season."

Despite the news that one of Mata, who picked up Chelsea's Player of the Year award last season, or Confederations Cup winner Luiz were included as part of a deal to take Rooney to Stamford Bridge, McQueen isn't convinced that Mourinho would ultimately allow either of the duo to leave.

"I just can't see Chelsea letting David Luiz and Juan Mata go as part of the deal," he added. "They are too important to the club. I think Jose Mourinho is just testing the water to see how serious United are about keeping Rooney.

"Moyes was adamant that Rooney was not for sale, but it now looks like he's not been able to convince Rooney that his future lies at Old Trafford.

"That is bad news for David because he needs to build trust with United fans and they will feel let down if Rooney heads out the door.

"Rooney may not be held in quite as high regard with United fans as he was because of his form last season and his attitude, but he's still a world-class talent who would be greatly missed.

"Of course players like Mata and Luiz would strengthen the United squad, but I just can't see them coming.

"However, losing Rooney would put pressure on David to sign a couple of top quality players before the start of the season, but there is a lot of work involved these days to get the big names and I'm not sure United have anything imminent.

"United don't do panic buys but if other clubs get the impression that United are desperate to replace Rooney then asking prices will shoot up as we get close to the season."

Ozil cool over new Real Madrid contract

    273754_heroa.jpg

The German playmaker says he wants to keep his options open for the future amid reports that the Spanish giants want to tie him down for six more years Mesut Ozil has insisted that he does not feel the need to sign a new deal at Real Madrid.

The Germany international first moved to the Bernabeu off the back of some stellar performances in the 2010 World Cup and has since become a key player for the Spanish giants.

And while he insists that he is very happy with life at the Santiago Bernabeu, he has no intention of renewing his contract just yet.

"It's nice that Madrid want to renew," he told Sport Bild. "It makes me happy because it is a sign of trust in my performances.

"But, at the moment, there is nothing decided and there is no pressure. Of course I can imagine finishing my career at Madrid. But I can also imagine doing something completely different at some point."

However, when asked whether his reticence to sign a new deal was motivated by Jose Mourinho's departure, he replied: "In football, everything can happen so fast. Every step has to be thought out carefully."

The 24-year-old went on to say that Carlo Ancelotti's side are aiming for a clean sweep of trophies in the coming campaign.

"We have big goals at Real Madrid. And we can only achieve that with great players. We're aiming for first place in all three competitions. This is not about arrogance.

"I look forward to the new season. At Real Madrid you cannot compete for a whole season with just 11 players. We need the best quality.

"Until now, I have always succeeded. In three years at Madrid - and also previously in the Bundesliga - I have played more than 100 matches. This is almost as good as it gets."

Callejon: Mourinho could have convinced me to stay

    294945_heroa.jpg

The attacker admits he may have opted against a move to Italy had the Portuguese not joined Chelsea Jose Callejon has revealed he could have been persuaded to stay at Real Madrid had Jose Mourinho remained in charge of the club, but insists he is excited about playing for Napoli next season.

The attacker completed a move to Stadio San Paolo last week after deciding to end his second stay with los Blancos, in search of regular first team football, but he revealed the intervention of the now Chelsea coach could have swayed his decision.

"Perhaps I would have stayed in Madrid if he had wanted to..." he told Cadena COPE.

"I spent two fabulous years with him in Madrid. Sometimes, things have been unfair to Mourinho, and things have been said which are not true. Madrid won and lost on the pitch, nothing more.

"The last thing I wanted to do was leave the club I love, the club of my life," he continued. "But sometimes you have to make difficult decisions. It would have been difficult to continue in Madrid.

"Now I have to play alot here, become a reference point for Napoli and, God willing, one day I will return. Now my objective is to try to get as far as possible here, to fight for the Scudetto and the Champions League, that's the competition everyone wants to play in.

"[Rafa] Benitez called me and that gave me a lot of confidence, that he wanted me and that I could be important for the team. Napoli had a great season and reached the Champions League, and this was decisive."

The 26-year-old also responded to claims from Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis on Wednesday that the club were negotiating a deal for Gonzalo Higuain.

"I've heard in all the papers that we've bid for Higuain. He can come here, but I've no idea.

Neymar can lead Barcelona to glory, says Schuster
    289874_heroa.jpg

The newly-appointed Malaga boss believes the Brazilian will prove to be "another nuisance" in La Liga next season and revealed he came close to taking a role in the Middle East Barcelona can expect to win a succession of trophies now that Neymar has joined the club, according to Malaga coach Bernd Schuster.

The Brazil star joined the Liga champions for €57 million last month and Schuster - who took the reins at La Rosaleda after Manuel Pellegrini joined Manchester City - believes the Catalans have invested in "another nuisance" who will make life tough for La Liga's defenders.

"The Confederations Cup is where we really saw him and he began to reach those expectations," Schuster told AS. "Aside from [Lionel] Messi, he is a player who is going to give a lot to Barcelona.

"They are going to win a lot, and complicate things for us. Now we have another nuisance who is going to make life impossible!"

Schuster revealed he came close to accepting offers from the Middle East, China and Russia before Malaga approached him to replace Pellegrini, and he is delighted to have returned to Spain.

"Until Malaga came along I saw myself outside of Spain," he explained. "In Turkey, Qatar, Dubai, Russia or China, they were very interested. Luckily, Malaga got in contact and that made me very happy.

"Spain has something special. That is where the national team is, the big teams... in general, La Liga is more competitive and more healthy than elsewhere."

Malaga have had to contend with the loss of key players this summer, with Isco, Martin Demichelis, Joaquin and Jeremy Toulalan all having moved to new clubs, but Schuster remains confident his side can take inspiration from Atletico Madrid last season and sustain a challenge for the top four.

"I would have liked them to stay. It is difficult to fill their gaps. Isco has done something special and unusual. I have no doubt we will find the way," he continued.

"We'll continue with the 'league of two'. Last season Atletico had a big season and now Villa has signed, but they've lost a man of 30 or 40 goals, Falcao.

"Malaga will see how we fit in from the beginning. The only good thing about a 'league of two' is that third and fourth are very equal."

Finally, Schuster revealed his admiration for new Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, admitting the news of his appointment came as a shock in Germany last season.

"It was a bombshell in Germany. At one point Uli Hoeness said the next coach had to speak German. And then Pep speaks German!," the 53-year-old added.

"It's something very special and Germany are delighted. They must feel very proud because this will raise the quality of the Bundesliga. And Thiago [Alcantara] is a star player."

Cavani was always preferred to Rooney, say PSG

    296540_heroa.jpg

The Ligue 1 champions' president has made it clear the Uruguayan was always their No.1 target this summer and has rubbished suggestions Zlatan Ibrahimovic could leave the club Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has revealed that Edinson Cavani was always the club's primary transfer target this summer, ahead of Manchester United's Wayne Rooney.

Cavani completed the €64 million signing of the Uruguay star on Tuesday after weeks of speculation over the foward's future, during which time wantaway Rooney was also linked with the French champions.

However, Al-Khelaifi has clarified that Cavani was always the No.1 choice for Laurent Blanc's side, and insisted the 26-year-old was not motivated to make the move by money.

When asked whether Rooney or Cavani had been the top target, Al-Khelaifi told Le Parisien: "Of course Cavani was our first choice, the coach's, Leonardo's and mine.

"He really wanted to come to Paris, although other big clubs wanted him. If he had not believed in the project, he would not have come.

"Cavani did not chose Paris for the money, believe me 100%. He believes in the project, he believes that, with us, he will be able to win many titles. The supporters and the sponsors know that the project continues, that the departures of [former sporting director] Leonardo and [ex-coach Carlo] Ancelotti don't change anything."

Speculation has been rife that Cavani's arrival could signal the end of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's career in Paris, with the Sweden star having been linked with a return to Juventus in recent weeks, as well as the likes of Manchester City.

Al-Khelaifi, however, will not entertain the notion of letting last season's talisman leave.

"Ibra will stay, that's for sure. He'll play with Cavani."

I'm over injury problems, insists Arsenal star Wilshere

    280209_heroa.jpg

With ankle surgery behind him, the England international is hoping to enjoy a productive pre-season as he bids to help the Gunners end their trophy drought this term Jack Wilshere insists he is over the worst of his injury problems and is ready to help Arsenal challenge for silverware this season.

Wilshere spent 15 months on the sidelines before returning to action for the Gunners against QPR last October, helping his side reel in Tottenham in the race for the top four.

He needed further surgery this summer on a long-standing ankle problem, but now the England international is adamant he is ready to play a full part again.

“It’s so hard for me to sit and watch because I’m someone who wants to play every game,” he told reporters.

“It was particularly tough at the end of last season, especially when I picked up another injury and came back and wasn’t playing like I can do.

“It’s really annoying when you cannot perform as well as you know you can.

“Now there are no long-term injury issues for me.

“They took the screws out of my ankle, which were causing me a problem and, hopefully, there will be no further issues.

“I’m a bit behind the other lads in terms of fitness because I wasn’t able to do much for six weeks after the operation.

“I will play some part during this tour of the Far East and, hopefully, I can have a good pre-season — which I haven’t done for the last two summers.

“This is such a big year for me. The aim is to play the full season for Arsenal and then, hopefully, go to the World Cup in Brazil with England.”

    Lewandowski resigned to Dortmund stay

    284499_heroa.jpg

The Poland striker admits a move away from Signal Iduna Park is now highly unlikely this summer - much to the delight of CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke
Borussia Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski has conceded he will likely have to stay with the club this summer despite his desire to leave.

The 24-year-old has long been linked with a move to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, but Dortmund have so far rebuffed any approach for the Poland international despite his eagerness to continue his career elsewhere.

However, Bayern director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge claimed earlier this month that the European champions will sign the striker when his contract expires in 2014, and Lewandowski himself has admitted a departure this summer is unlikely.

Speaking after a training session in Bad Ragaz in Switzerland, he told Bild: "I have to accept that I have to stay in Dortmund."

BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke was understandably pleased with the striker's comments, adding that the club was never in any doubt as to the integrity of the former Lech Poznan man in spite of his desire to leave.

"That's good. But we never had any doubt as to his good character," Watzke added to Bild.

Lewandowski scored 36 goals in all competitions last season as Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the final of the Champions League.

Thailand All-Stars 0-1 Chelsea: Lukaku penalty gets Mourinho off to winning start

    296809hp2.jpg

Romelu Lukaku helped kick-off Jose Mourinho's second spell as Chelsea manager in confident fashion, as the Blues defeated Thailand All-Stars in the first game of their tour of Asia.

The Belgium international marked his return from a season-long loan spell at West Brom with a first-half penalty, while Chelsea also saw a loose ball rebound back off the crossbar amidst a host of missed chances.

Mourinho utilised the entire touring party with two almost entirely different XIs in each half; only the impressive Kevin De Bruyne and Ramires played more than 45 minutes in sweltering conditions in Bangkok.

A steady start saw the Blues control possession and patiently probe the Thailand back five, but it wasn't until the 18th minute that a genuine chance was created.

De Bruyne's precise cross from one of many dangerous set-pieces saw Michael Essien's header across goal get turned onto the crossbar after a communication mix-up between goalkeeper and defender.

To this point Lukaku had struggled to find a rhythm but following a one-on-one conversation with Mourinho during a drinks break, the 20-year-old came alive and immediately threatened the opposition goal.

In the 32nd minute, after dropping deep, he rolled his marker to latch onto a through ball and drew Kritsana Klanklin into a save with his feet.

Moments later, a short De Bruyne free kick invited Brazilian debutant Wallace to move into the penalty box, who, with half an eye on the defender approaching him, went down under a clumsy challenge.

Lukaku made no mistake from the spot, firmly sidefooting beyond Klanklin to give Mourinho's team the lead.

The Belgian came close to doubling his tally in the 39th minute as he again arrived onto a precise through-ball to control and volley across goal, but Klanklin tipped the low effort behind for a corner.

There came a raft of changes at half-time, with Mourinho introducing new signing Marco van Ginkel as fellow new-boy Andre Schurrle departed the field, but the Blues struggled to add to their solitary goal.

Another couple of intelligent set-pieces from De Bruyne yielded the clearest chances, with Demba Ba drilling a low cross just wide of the near post, before Branislav Ivanovic and Ba wrestled with each other to tap home a deep inswinging ball. As it transpired, the Serb's touch was too tame to beat Klanklin.

Eden Hazard provided moments of inspiration, as he is liable to do, and almost added a second as he bent a strong free kick through the wall and towards goal, but the spritely Klanklin kept the shot out.

By full-time Jamal Blackman was only called into action by an audacious 45-yard volley and a far post header that didn't come close to threatening his goal.

Unlike David Moyes, who saw his Manchester United team lose to the same outfit, Mourinho is off to a winning start in Asia thanks to Lukaku's spot-kick.
