Atletico 'stronger' than Barca and Madrid, says Arda

    284015_heroa.jpg

The 26-year-old believes recent results have proven los Rojiblancos are ready to become Spain's dominant force Arda Turan insists Atletico Madrid are a stronger team than both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone's side finished third in La Liga last season and beat Madrid for the first time in 13 years in the Copa del Rey final and the Turkey international believes his team are now on par, if not better than the two Spanish giants.

“I think we are now at an even level (to Barcelona and Real Madrid),” he told El Mundo Deportivo.

“All these clubs have fantastic players, Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern [Munich] but we are stronger as a team.

“We have worked hard to create a very strong group, we are together, we are powerful. We are not an easy team to beat.

“Can we compete with the big two in the league? Yes, why not?

“We can do it, I believe. And I think the fans of Atletico do too. We beat Chelsea in the Uefa Super Cup, Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey, we can achieve what we set out to.

“At the time, no-one believed we could win those two games and we did. We must believe in ourselves.”

Atletico lost leading goalscorer Radamel Falcao to Monaco last month, but have strengthened the squad by signing David Villa, Martin Demichelis and Leo Baptistao.

PSV agree Strootman fee with Roma

    294122_heroa.jpg

The Dutch giants confirmed on their official website on Tuesday that they had accepted a bid for the Netherlands international from the Italian capital club
PSV have confirmed that they have agreed a fee with Roma over the transfer of midfielder Kevin Strootman.

The Netherlands international has enjoyed two successful seasons with the Dutch giants since moving from Utrecht in 2011, having won the KNVB Beker and the Super Cup in 2012, becoming Oranje vice-skipper.

The 23-year-old has now travelled to Rome and will negotiate personal terms before undergoing a medical check with the capital club.

"This was a transfer we could not stop," technical director Marcel Brands was quoted as saying on their official website.

"[The fee] is one of the biggest amounts in PSV's history. But it's a sporting loss," he added.

Strootman is the second PSV star to move to Serie A this summer, after winger Dries Mertens's became Napoli coach Rafa Benitez's first signing in a €9.5 million June move.

    Vilanova confirms Thiago Silva interest

    269929_heroa.jpg

The Barcelona boss is looking at several candidates to bolster his side's back line but hinted that it would be difficult to bring the PSG star to Camp Nou Tito Vilanova has confirmed he is looking to buy a centre-back during the summer transfer window, admitting he is looking at alternatives to prime target Thiago Silva.

The Paris Saint-Germain stopper confirmed his intention to see out his current deal at Parc des Princes despite interest from Barcelona, while Roma youngster Marquinhos has also been linked with a switch to Camp Nou.

Although sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta denied any official bid had been made for Marquinhos, both he and Vilanova hinted at further interest in the 19-year-old as a move for Thiago Silva appears to be stalling.

"The intention is to find a centre-back. I would like him [Thiago Silva] to come, but I have not given just one name. We want to sign a centre-back," Vilanova told a press conference on Tuesday.

Zubizarreta added: "We do not usually say which player we want, negotiations are not retransmitted. We intend to have the best squad possible. It's not true there's an offer [for Marquinhos], but he's an interesting player."

Vilanova went on to voice his dismay and Barcelona's defensive injury misfortunes last season, and hinted at disappointment in the performances of Alex Song, who was frequently asked to slot into the back four in the absence of Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano.

"We already talked in November and February [about replacements]," he continued. "[Seydou] Keita left and Song had to come. We thought he could fill the gap and did not count on the possibility of having so many injuries and so much bad luck. We will bring in a central defender, for sure."

The scarcity of options at the back allowed Masia graduate Marc Bartra to stake his claim for further first-team action next season, and Vilanova encouraged the youngster to seize any more chances that come his way.

"He will have to win the spotlight. It is the players who earn their minutes," the 44-year-old added.

Bayern will not become Barcelona, insists Robben

    294123_heroa.jpg

The Netherlands winger has stressed the European champions will continue to develop in their own particular style under their new coach Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben insists his side will not attempt to emulate Barcelona under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola.

The former Blaugrana boss took the reins at the Allianz Arena after Jupp Heynckes departed at the end of last season, with Guardiola spending €25 million to take Thiago Alcantara from Camp Nou earlier this week.

But Robben, 29, has made it clear the Bavarians will continue to improve in their own robust style, while stressing the need to ensure last season was not a one off.

"We have our own qualities," he told Sp!ts when asked whether they would look to copy Barcelona. "We have shown that we can win prizes our way. It's up to us to make the next step and become better."

Robben struck the winning goal in Bayern's 2-1 Champions League final triumph over Borussia Dortmund last term, completing an historic treble for the Bundesliga champions.

Bayern kick off the defence of their domestic crown at home to Borussia Monchengladach on August 9.

'Angry' Wayne Rooney arrives at Manchester United training ground

    bigsand_2941711.jpg

Wayne Rooney has arrived at Manchester United's training ground with speculation continuing to mount over his future.

Rooney - who is undergoing treatment for a hamstring injury - is reported to be "angry and confused" after recent comments from manager David Moyes appeared to indicate the 27-year-old would be a back-up option for striker Robin van Persie next season.

The England forward believes he has nothing left to prove after nine successful seasons at Old Trafford, and is disappointed by his manager publicly stating the need to "get him back to where he was".

Rooney has also taken exception to United's stance over his contract, with the club insistent they are prepared to let his current deal - which has two years left to run - expire.Speaking last week, United chief executive Ed Woodward said of Rooney's position: "No contract renewals are being discussed. I am not sitting down with any player on an extension and there is no trigger date in the diary.

"Would we be afraid to run a contract down? Of course not."Despite the growing unrest between player and club, Moyes has repeatedly stood firm on the striker's future, saying the 27-year-old is not for sale - although Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is a confirmed admirer.

Speaking at the start of Chelsea's Far East tour last Friday, Mourinho said of Rooney: "He is a player I like very much but I can say no more than that. Being fast and direct, I like that, but he's a Manchester United player."

:shocked:Napoli in talks to sign Higuain

    gonzalohiguainargentina20130607_576x324.jpg

Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has confirmed his club is in talks to sign Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain as the Italian side close in on his Real Madrid team-mate Raul Albiol.

Arsenal have been keen to sign Higuain this summer and were thought to be close to a deal, although there are indications that new Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti would be keen to retain the Argentina international.

However, Napoli have cash to spend following the €64 million sale of Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain and have now entered the race for his services.
Asked in a Twitter Q&A whether his club were in negotiations for Higuain and Internacional forward Leandro Damiao, De Laurentiis replied: “It’s true.”

He added that there are still “several names” under consideration to replace Cavani.Meanwhile, Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol is undergoing a medical with the Serie A side ahead of a €12 million move, De Laurentiis confirmed in the Q&A.

The defender, who has represented the Spainish national side on 40 occasions, has played a bit-part role at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent seasons. In the 2009-2010 season, his first year with Los Blancos after signing from Valencia, the centre-back played 33 times in La Liga, but since then he has failed to make more than 20 league appearances in a season.

Napoli, now led by Rafa Benitez, have already signed Jose Callejon from Madrid.

De Gea hopes Cesc joins United

    cescfabregaswoe20130427_576x324.jpg

David de Gea would welcome Cesc Fabregas at Manchester United, amid reports the Premier League champions are willing to break their transfer record in order to land the Spain international.

United are reported to have made a €30 million bid for former Arsenal midfielder Fabregas, although Barca are yet to respond to the approach as manager David Moyes plans for the 2013-14 season.

Barca boss Tito Vilanova insisted on Tuesday that the 26-year-old wants to stay at the Camp Nou, but the Guardian claims the Liga champions "need the money", having spent lavishly on Neymar this summer. The Daily Mirror, meanwhile, suggests United are open to paying up to £31 million for Fabregas, a fee that would surpass the £30.8 million they paid Tottenham for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.

Asked about his compatriot, De Gea, who signed for United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, is quoted as saying in the Guardian: "It would be great if Cesc came here."It would be great to have more Spanish players at Manchester United. He is a great player, very skilful, knows how to win things and you always want those type of players in your team."

    Negredo set for City switch

    alvaronegredospain20120627_576x324.jpg

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has announced that Alvaro Negredo is set to join Manchester City.

New City coach Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed his desire to strengthen his attacking options following the departures of Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez, and Spain forward Negredo, 27, is now set to complete a switch to the Etihad Stadium“We are about to complete the sale of the player and, if everything goes ahead as expected, he will soon say goodbye to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan,” Del Nido told the media at a press conference reported on his club’s official website.

“Manchester City will buy a great player, the top Spanish goalscorer in La Liga. Sevilla is involved in a major transfer operation, the second largest in the club’s history after Dani Alves, and the player will sign the contract of his life.
“Everyone should be happy. It is a good piece of business for all three parties.”
The deal is reported to be worth around €25 million up front, with a further €3 million in potential add-ons.

City are also reported to be closing in on a deal for Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic.

Chelsea deny Rooney swap deal bid

    waynerooneystamfordbridge_576x324.jpg

Chelsea have confirmed they have made a bid for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, but denied reports that the offer was £10 million plus Juan Mata or David Luiz.

Rooney's future has been the subject of intense speculation since former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed the club had turned down a second transfer request in three years from the striker.

New Red Devils boss David Moyes has said the England international is not for sale, although his comments regarding whether the player is one of the first names on his team sheet have reportedly left Rooney "angry and confused".
Arsenal have been linked with the former Everton player, but Chelsea's approach, reported by the BBC and Daily Mail among others on Wednesday, is the first firm offer for his services, as Blues manager Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his attacking options.

The alleged inclusion of Mata or Luiz in the proposed deal came as a surprise, particularly as the Spain international scored 12 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season, while the defender impressed during Brazil's recent Confederations Cup success.Chelsea have now sought to clarify the terms of their offer, releasing a statement that suggested Manchester United had misled the media.

It read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney."Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for the avoidance of doubt, and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any Chelsea players to Manchester United."

Mourinho is a long-term admirer of Rooney, who has also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, and the Portuguese this week voiced his belief that England's World Cup hopes could suffer if the forward is not playing regularly during the 2013-14 season.
