Barcelona 5-2 Rayo Vallecano: Neymar scores four in rout

    2094232_heroa.jpg

Neymar scored four goals as Barcelona came from behind to defeat Rayo Vallecano 5-2 at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Barca had lost two of their previous three games prior to this but Neymar cancelled out Javi Guerra's opener by winning and converting two penalties before adding two quick-fire goals late on to help keep his side level on points with Real Madrid.

Guerra made the most of slack Barca defending 15 minutes in to earn the visitors a surprise lead, but Neymar proved too hot for Rayo to handle in the first half and had two of four penalty appeals given by the referee.

Having coaxed fouls from Diego Llorente and Nacho Martinez, Neymar tucked both spot kicks away to help Luis Enrique's men deal with the absence of injured star Lionel Messi.

The Argentina man has had his struggles with penalties and Neymar will have a case to take them even when Messi returns.

Neymar capped a sublime display with two goals in two second-half minutes before laying on a fifth for Luis Suarez. Jozabed's late finish mattered little as Barca moved second ahead of a clash between third-place Villarreal and Celta Vigo in fourth on Sunday.

Sergi Roberto was moved into midfield at Javier Mascherano's expense and he played Ivan Rakitic clean through for Barca's first chance, as Tono denied the Croatian one-on-one seven minutes in.

The pressure from the hosts continued as Tono's poor clearance fell to Sergio Busquets, who passed to Luis Suarez, only for the Rayo goalkeeper to redeem himself by saving the Uruguayan's effort from inside the area.

Jeremy Mathieu then denied Bebe a shot on goal after a quick counter, before Rayo took the lead against the run of play as Guerra punished some slack Barca defending.

The in-form striker turned home Bebe's cross to register his fourth goal in six La Liga games to silence the Camp Nou 15 minutes in.

Neymar then saw his first penalty appeal waved away following a challenge from Llorente but the Rayo man fouled the Barca forward again soon after.

Referee Pedro Perez awarded what was a blatant penalty and Neymar converted before Suarez appeared to have completed the turnaround, only to see his effort ruled out for offside.

Neymar continued to cause Rayo problems, turning Martinez inside out before being upended inside the area for a second time - finding the opposite corner from the spot shortly after the half-hour mark.

Martinez appeared to foul Neymar again before the break but the Brazilian was denied a third penalty.

Rayo began the second-half brightly and Claudio Bravo was called on to deny Guerra his second before producing a fine double stop after efforts from Lass Bangoura and Patrick Ebert to keep Barca in front.

Despite Rayo's attempts, Neymar continued to prove unstoppable, finishing well when Tono saved from Suarez before his forward partner put a fourth goal on a plate for him 19 minutes from time.

Suarez earned his reward for a tireless display up front with a fifth - Neymar turning provider with an inch-perfect cross for the former Liverpool man to finish from close range - the pair having scored all of Barca's last nine league goals between them.

Jozabed's strike five minutes from time to make it 5-2 mattered little, as Rayo were left to contemplate a 10th consecutive defeat to Barca, shipping 45 goals in that spell.

Van Gaal issues warning to Depay

    memphis-depay-manchester-united_18whqa6lzgsx41em3xc51oh3lp.jpg

“Some players cannot adapt to the team philosophy,” Van Gaal told reporters. “That you cannot know in advance. You have to see that.

“Because you see a lot of qualities in a player, but Depay has to put that quality in service of your team.

“That also happened with Di María and Falcao – both great players but you have to fit in with the philosophy. Not only with Memphis, with every player that we have bought.”

Depay impressed in his opening handful of appearances at Old Trafford, netting a brace in the Champions League play-off match with Club Brugge, but the 21-year-old has struggled in Premier League matches, with his form tailing off since August.

But Van Gaal remained optimistic about the Dutchman's future, with the United boss insisting that he still believes in Depay and, like all young players, the winger needs time to progress.

"Do I still believe in him? Of course," the former Netherlands manager added.

“The problem with young players is they are not consistent. That you have to learn. We have to give him time.”

Van Gaal also revealed that assistant manager Ryan Giggs had been playing a key role in the 21-year-old's development, offering the player advice, though the Dutch coach maintained that Depay is ultimately responsible for himself.

“Ryan has already given advice to him but the player is responsible for his own deeds," said the United boss.

Walcott: Arsenal can beat Bayern Munich

    alexis-sanchez-theo-walcott-arsenal_1ddayvge3hsew1hlbf0vq9epp3.jpg

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes his side can beat Bayern Munich if they replicate the same level of performance they produced in the 3-0 win over Manchester United.

The Gunners shocked Louis van Gaal's men with a stunning display of attacking football and followed that up with another 3-0 victory over Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Next up for Arsenal are Bayern in the Champions League group stage - with Arsene Wenger's men in desperate need of points after picking up none from their first two games.

Walcott said: "Playing against Bayern and their quality is of course going to be a challenge for us, but we are at home with our support and we need a similar sort of performance like we had against Manchester United.
"We know we can beat anyone and we’re going to be completely ready for this one.

“We need to move on from the first couple of results in the Champions League. We know we are capable of getting results against Bayern and we want to put things right.

“Looking at our last Premier League home match against United, the intensity of our game was different to what it was like against Olympiakos in the Champions League."
English clubs have struggled in the Champions League so far this season, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all tasting defeat.
But Walcott says the form of Premier League sides is temporary rather than an example that the quality of the division's leading clubs is on the wane.

"I think it is just a little blip at this moment in time," he added.

“I don’t think it will last long. You see from the amount of quality players in the Premier League shows that this league is one of the best.”

Ibrahimovic: PSG are ready for Real Madrid

    zlatan-ibrahimovic_1tgm5mnfpnxnr1t1qat8avlevo.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has warned Real Madrid that Paris Saint-Germain are ready for them after scoring twice in his side’s 2-0 win over Bastia.

Both of the striker’s goals came in the final 20 minutes of Saturday’s Ligue 1 encounter as PSG maintained their five-point lead at the top of the table.

Laurent Blanc’s side are now unbeaten in 10 league matches and have also won their opening two games in this season’s Champions League.

"It's a good result against Bastia, because we have beaten a difficult team to play against,” the 34-year-old told Sport24.

“We remembered our bad result here last season [in which PSG lost 4-2], but today we took the three points and continued our effort to win titles.”

PSG will have little time to stew on their latest win, though, with thoughts quickly turning to Madrid’s visit to the French capital in the week.
Like the Parisiens, Rafael Benitez’s side are also yet to taste defeat in the league this season and have taken maximum points from their two games in Europe.

The clash between the two, therefore, could be decisive in deciding who will claim top spot in a group which also features Malmo and Shakhtar Donetsk.

“Wednesday's game against Real Madrid will be completely different,” Zlatan added.

“We will play at home against one of the best teams in the world, it will be fun to play. Now we can focus on that and we are ready for them."

    Hodgson: Sturridge must prove himself

    danielsturridge-cropped_ppwsuostzvcu1u7idrj9ili27.jpg

England manager Roy Hodgson says Daniel Sturridge must prove he deserves to be his first-choice striker.

Sturridge has battled injuries for the past 12 months and missed Liverpool's 0-0 Premier League draw against Tottenham on Saturday due to a knee worry.

As a result he missed much of England's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign and faces a battle with Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney to start in attack.

"It would be ridiculous to say at the moment anyone is number one," Hodgson said.

"For Daniel, we haven't seen him for well over a year.

"I'm not prepared at the moment to say Daniel's number one or Rooney's number one or Kane's number one. Everyone is in competition. I'm delighted Daniel is back fit and playing.

"I know, he knows and Liverpool know that there is a bit of work for him to do because he hasn't been back for such a long time and even when you regain fitness, you don't regain match fitness fully until you get a few matches under your belt.

"But we're really pleased that he is back playing and we're expecting him to be the player he was when we selected him and believed so much in before the World Cup."
Hodgson hopes to have Sturridge available for England's friendlies against Spain and France in November.

He said Sturridge had proven his quality, but injuries had affected his England career.

"We are counting on him being fit, getting matches and getting some goals hopefully and being with us in November," Hodgson said.

"No-one would deny Sturridge is a gifted player. Everyone in the country realises what a talent Daniel is, but it has been a little bit stop-start with England for quite a while now."

    Wenger undecided over Arsenal future

    arsene-wenger-arsenal-2011_1nsrser1qgzgl12d5youl47ih7.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he remains undecided over his future as he approaches the final 18 months of his contract at the club.

The Frenchman has been in charge of the Gunners for 19 years, but refused to commit beyond 2017 when addressing supporters at an annual general meeting last week.

Wenger has come under fire in recent years as a result of the club's thrifty approach in the transfer market and failure to win the Premier League for a decade.

He told Sky Sports: "I honestly don't know [when I'll quit]. "I've said many times that I just want to do well. When will I stop? We'll see."

The 65-year-old guided his side to a 3-0 win over Watford in the Premier League on Saturday, having beaten Manchester United 3-0 two weeks ago.

Arsenal now face Bayern Munich at the Emirates in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mata: I'm playing better under Van Gaal than Mourinho… that's a fact

    juan-mata-manchester-united_avuot0dbkq6e1smhrvw2bo68m.jpg

Juan Mata says "creative players always get blamed" when things go wrong and believes he is playing better for Manchester United than he ever did for Chelsea.
The midfielder was voted the Blues' Player of the Year at the end of both of his two full seasons at Stamford Bridge, but fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho.

After spending the first half of the 2013/14 campaign on the bench, he was sold to United in January 2014 amid suggestions the coach had doubts over his work-rate.
However, Mata - who was substituted at half-time during United's 3-0 win over Everton - pointed to his statistics at United after rejecting suggestions that he is a "luxury player".

‘If a luxury player is a player who scores and assists and has good stats – then I’m happy to be a luxury player,’ Mata told The Times.

“I’ve scored as many goals for Manchester United in the Premier League as for Chelsea, but in something like 30 games less. ‘In terms of scoring and assisting, I'm quite happy with the stats, and stats don't lie. They are facts.

I want luxury players in my team. I like creative players and players who do different things. It’s easy to say certain players are luxuries, especially when you’ve lost a game.

‘When you lose a certain kind of player – the creative players – always get the blame."Mata, 27, attributed a large part of his success at United to Van Gaal, and pointed to his direct approach as key to their working relationship.

“I really value his honesty,” he continued. “When someone does something in training that he really likes, he goes over to hug and kiss them — he really does it.

“Or he will say in front of everyone, ‘You are the best in training, I'm really proud of how you played,’ to set a a good example to others.

“Van Gaal is how you see him in the press conferences, he's like that with us too.

"He's honest and straight-forward. He believes in his style of training and way of preparing for games. He's won trophies everywhere he's been and hopefully this season now we know him better we'll win something too.”

Dzeko wary of 'dangerous' Republic of Ireland

    edin-dzeko-bosnia-and-herzegovina_1la00sn94980u1t9p2k5vrjiwi.jpg

Bosnia-Herzegovina striker Edin Dzeko is wary of the dangers Republic of Ireland will pose in November’s two-legged play-off for a place at Euro 2016.

Ireland lost to Poland last week as they narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for the finals, dropping into the play-offs for the second European Championship qualification contest in a row.

And in Sunday’s eight-team draw they were paired with Bosnia, who finished third in their group behind Belgium and Wales.

"The fact Ireland didn’t lose to Germany in qualifying speaks for itself," Dzeko told Goal .

"We all know they are dangerous from set pieces and that they play long balls. I know most of their players from Premier League, but they know us as well."

Martin O’Neill’s side will be without captain John O’Shea and striker Jon Walters for the first leg in Bosnia through suspension, something Dzeko believes could work in his country’s favour.

"We have to give 200 per cent to progress," the Roma star added.

"It would be great to have good result in the first leg, considering the fact they will be missing some important players."

Meanwhile, Bosnia’s coach Mehmed Bazdarevic believes they have been handed the worst possible draw.

"My opinion is we got the toughest opponent," he said. "Of course we are capable of beating anyone, but it could have been a better draw."

Bosnia will host the first leg on November 13, with the second leg then due to take place in Ireland three days later on November 16.

Ireland are looking to secure qualification for their second successive European Championship - four years ago they came through a play-off tie with Estonia.

Sammer: Lewandowski lucky not to be injured

    robertlewandowski-cropped_1ufei3vtxvvla17t16tufxdjtk.jpg

Bayern Munich director Matthias Sammer was relieved after Robert Lewandowski escaped unharmed from a clumsy tackle against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Lewandowski was left crumpled on the Weserstadion turf 20 minutes from time after tangling wither Werder goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald, who caught the Poland striker in the knee with his studs, a challenge not deemed worthy of a foul by referee Christian Dingert.

Bayern's top scorer was able to complete the game as the champions edged to a 1-0 victory courtesy of a Thomas Muller goal, taking Pep Guardiola's side to a new Bundesliga record of nine consecutive wins to begin a season.

But Sammer was in a less than jolly mood after the game.

He said: "It was a penalty. We have had tremendous luck that Robert Lewandowski is not injured.

"I'm now curious to see if there will be the same crying as there would have been if it was the other way around. It will interest me in the next few days."

Lewandowski, though, agreeing that a foul should have been called, was more stoic.

He added: "It's not easy for strikers in that situation. I think it was a clear penalty, but fortunately we still took three points. From tomorrow on we focus on the Champions League."

Moyes pays warm tribute to 'football man' Kendall

    davidmoyes-cropped_1tjau4j9lu91v1p41k7wy8ztun.jpg

David Moyes has paid tribute to Howard Kendall after the Everton great died at the age of 69.

Kendall starred as a player at Goodison Park, winning the First Division title in 1970 as part of an acclaimed line-up featuring Colin Harvey and Alan Ball.

He surpassed those feats during the first of three spells as Everton manager between 1981 and 1987, when he won the league title twice and guided them to glory in the FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup – achievements that Moyes believes establish him as the Merseyside club's greatest tactician.

Real Sociedad coach Moyes managed Everton between 2002 and 2013 and revealed that Kendall served as a mentoring figure to him throughout his time in charge.

"I’m really saddened to learn of the death of Howard Kendall," Moyes said. "He was someone I looked up to because of his achievements at Everton

“He was a great manager and in my time at Everton he was fully supportive of me. He was always ready to give advice when it was needed. My thoughts are with his family.

"Undoubtedly, Howard will go down in Everton's history as the finest manager to have worked at the club. He'll be missed by everyone at Goodison and many throughout the game.

"After matches I'd bump in to him on the stairs or in the corridor and we'd always have a talk about the game.

"He was always full of common sense and was someone who didn't give his opinion in anything other than a supportive way.

"He never said 'you should be doing this or doing that'. He knew the manager’s job is hard. That was one of his traits – you could talk to him as a football man."

Kendall coached La Real's Basque neighbours Athletic Bilbao between 1987 and 1989 and Moyes believes his loss will also be keenly felt in Spanish football.

The Scotsman added: "He'll be missed in Spain as well. He was at Athletic Bilbao and they still talk about him here.

"I'm sure there’ll be people thinking about him here this weekend."

Pulis: McClean 'not the sharpest tool in the box'

    jamesmcclean-cropped_7p45wlexarvg1ddawwezfx2ij.jpg

West Brom head coach Tony Pulis labelled James McClean "not the sharpest tool in the box" after the player gestured towards fans of former club Sunderland at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

McClean was the subject of jeers from sections of the away support during West Brom's 1-0 win - the Republic of Ireland international previously claiming to have been "hung out to dry" by Sunderland prior to his exit over his refusal to wear a remembrance poppy in 2012.

Derry-born McClean celebrated briefly in front of the visiting fans after the final whistle, much to the anger of Sunderland pair Danny Graham and Lee Cattermole.

Pulis has had discussions with McClean over his behaviour before, when he snubbed the British national anthem in a pre-season friendly this year, and the Baggies boss insists he will do so again if the 26-year-old finds himself in the wrong.

"I'd heard a roar or whatever and didn't know whether the players were involved in something. If he's out of order, I'll speak to him," he told reporters.

"He played really well, James. He's settled in really well and is a smashing lad. The lads have really taken to him.

"He's not the sharpest tool in the box, and that's not being disrespectful to him. But he's a smashing lad."

Van Gaal: Man Utd title contenders if we beat City

    louis-van-gaal-manchester-united_1bc06msw07qtc15z1hbkuuem41.jpg

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United can be considered contenders for the Premier League title if they beat Manchester City next weekend.

United bounced back from their defeat to Arsenal before the international break by delivering an impressive performance to beat Everton 3-0 on Saturday.

Next up is CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, with the Manchester derby to follow that.

And Van Gaal believes a positive result at Old Trafford against Manuel Pellegrini’s table-toppers would be a real statement of intent from his side.

"I am very happy with the response of my players and I am very proud of the performance [against Everton],” the Dutchman said.

"I think it was an excellent performance and maybe it is the start of many, many victories.

"We have to be more consistent so next week when we win against Manchester City then we can say 'OK, now we think maybe about title aspirations'.

“We are always having the target of champions. That is of course important in our ambition.”

United are currently two points behind City in the table, level on 19 points with Arsenal in second place.

Lahm sees no end to Bayern's winning streak

    philipplahm-cropped_19ej2vdu28r711fm3o4tso0oy3.jpg

Philipp Lahm is confident Bayern Munich's perfect start to the Bundesliga season will continue for some time to come, after their record-breaking feats on Saturday.

Thomas Muller's goal earned the reigning champion a 1-0 success at Werder Bremen as Pep Guardiola's men made it nine wins from nine to start the 2015-16 campaign - a league record.

Bayern, who have won the last three German titles, are already seven points clear of nearest challengers Borussia Dortmund and Lahm sees no reason why their winning run cannot continue.

"I can't see an end to this streak," the World Cup winner said.

"Our aim's always to win the three points, if then it leads to us breaking a record then that's all the better.

"It's not easy to be at your very best right from the first game of the season and constantly pick up three points.

"Let's put it this way – we go into every game to win it, and that's always going to be the case.

"Then there's a long way to go before we're champions. We've only played nine matches and we're only seven points clear, so nothing's decided yet.

"It's certainly impressive the way we're able to keep our foot down all the time and have all this energy. That's a great thing that we definitely want to sustain."

    Origi: Liverpool goals will come

    spurs-cropped_xrng3lvmbzir13lt66v8qet9j.jpg

Liverpool striker Divock Origi is optimistic he will score goals on a regular basis for the Reds despite missing a key chance against Tottenham on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's first game in charge ended in a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane, with the former Lille attacker wasting the best opening of the match when he headed against the crossbar from close range in the early stages.

The 20-year-old had started his first Premier League game with Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge all ruled out through injury and he is confident the goals will come soon.

He told Liverpool's official website: "I tried to work hard for the team. It is a new system and I was very excited, just a bit unlucky with the finishing but I am sure it will come.

"Everybody has encouraging words for me so I just have to continue like this and it will be okay. I feel for sorry for the boys that are out but I will just try to support the team and do my best.

"Everybody says that I have the qualities, I just have to work hard and the goals will come."

Origi has also revealed that Klopp has told the squad to play without fear after a slow start to the 2015-16 season saw Brendan Rodgers sacked as manager.

"He told us just to play with passion and no fear," continued the Belgium international.

"He believes in everybody – the young players, the old players, we are all here because we have quality. We just have to work hard and trust him. We all trust him so I think we can have a good season.

"When you look at the coach, he sends out a very strong feeling, a very powerful feeling. You can see it through the team."

Real Sociedad 0-2 Atletico Madrid: Griezmann and Carrasco lift Simeone's men

    2098562_heroa.jpg

Antoine Griezmann once again returned to haunt his former club as Atletico Madrid ground out a 2-0 Liga win over nine-man Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Griezmann, who netted when Atletico won by the same scoreline in the two teams' meeting in the Spanish capital last season, scored a stunning ninth-minute solo effort at the Anoeta.

The contest fell some way short of such excellence thereafter, with Diego Simeone's men struggling for fluency as they tasted victory for the first time in four outings across all competitions.

An ill-tempered contest ended with the hosts at a numerical disadvantage - Diego Reyes and Jonathas talking their way into red cards either side of Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco's first goal for Atleti doubling the visitors' lead and sealing the points.

David Moyes' Sociedad remain precariously placed in 16th, with six points from eight matches and only outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
The gap between Atletico and three-way leaders Real Madrid, Celta Vigo and Barcelona is down to two points.

Atletico started the match in confident fashion and, after the fit-again Koke headed wide from a Filipe Luis cross, Griezmann majestically opened the scoring.

The France international displayed pace and poise to breeze past Asier Illarramendi and Diego Reyes before lifting a delicate finish over Geronimo Rulli for his sixth of the season.

David Zurutuza hooked a volley over from inside the Atletico area as the hosts sought an immediate response and they came much closer when Sergio Canales sent a free-kick from 25 yards out just beyond the right-hand post in the 17th minute.

Canales' next dead-ball attempt was thwarted by the Atleti wall, while Griezmann saw a free-kick of his own deflected behind 10 minutes before the interval.

The five yellow cards shown by referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva at that stage were indicative of an increasingly scrappy contest, with tempers on both sides coming close to boiling over as half-time approached.

Jackson Martinez, preferred up-front by Simeone to Fernando Torres, scuffed wide under pressure from Inigo Torres in the 48th minute, although Sociedad made a far more assertive start to the second period.

Markel Bergara, one of the players in the book, was perhaps fortunate to remain on the field when he clattered into Jan Oblak when attacking a 51st-minute set piece and the hosts continued to struggle in their quest to fashion clear chances.

When they came close to levelling with an hour played it was down to Jackson Martinez getting in front of his goalkeeper and almost glancing a corner into his own net.

A lacklustre outing for the Colombia international ended shortly afterwards when Torres entered the fray, but he was ill-served in terms of service, the majority of the action remaining inside the Atletico half.

Filipe hacked clear form the goalmouth as Atleti again defended a corner unconvincingly before Oblak denied substitute Bruma in the 84th minute.
Reyes directed his apparent frustration with Atletico's time-wasting tactics towards the referee and was sent off in the 89th minute, triggering further controversy in injury time.

Substitute Jonathas had a penalty claim waved away, with Torres breaking and feeding Ferreira-Carrasco to round Rulli and score, and the enraged forward complained to the extent that he received two bookings in a matter of seconds to conclude a dispiriting afternoon for Moyes' men.
