Newcastle 6-2 Norwich: Wijnaldum hits FOUR in rout

    2099442_heroa.jpg

Georginio Wijnaldum scored four goals as Newcastle United thrashed Norwich 6-2 at St James's Park on Sunday.

The Netherlands international, who becomes only the second Newcastle player to score four goals in a Premier League game after Alan Shearer, opened the scoring with a low finish.

Robbie Brady hit the post for the visitors, before Norwich drew level when Dieumerci Mbokani converted from close range.

A Wijnaldum header and Ayoze Perez's strike had Steve McClaren's men two goals ahead, but Nathan Redmond's volley put the game back in the balance until a second-half strike from Aleksandar Mitrovic and another Wijnaldum header ended the game as a contest.

The Dutchman then put the icing on the cake when his long-range effort deflected into the top corner to seal a morale-boosting victory ahead of next week's trip to fierce rivals Sunderland.

Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko - who had a hand in four of Newcastle's six goals - were the stars of the show as the home side won for the first time in the league this season.

Norwich, who are yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet this term, drop to 16th after their winless run was extended to four league games.

A breathless encounter thrilled from the off and Newcastle took the lead 14 minutes in. Sissoko impressively weaved into space at the edge of the area and found Wijnaldum, who slotted an accurate finish past John Ruddy.

Norwich's response was swift. After Brady cannoned a long-range shot off the post, Mbokani stole in to convert Martin Olsson's left-wing cross at the near post.

A thrilling first half continued as the home side moved back in front in the 26th minute. Sissoko again made the goal, sending an inviting cross in from the right for Wijnaldum to charge into the box and direct a downward header beyond Ruddy.

Norwich had strong appeals for a penalty waved away and Newcastle took advantage as Sissoko led a quick counter-attack, carrying the ball from his own half, before finding Perez, who drove a low shot into the corner at the second time of asking.

The match took another dramatic turn when the visitors got back into it a minute later. Olsson's deep cross made it all the way through to Redmond at the far post and the winger planted a volley past Rob Elliot, playing in place of the injured Tim Krul.

Wijnaldum made the difference in his own box early in the second half when he cleared former Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong's header off the line.

That intervention was made all the more crucial when Newcastle made it four with 26 minutes remaining. Sissoko was the creator again, chipping a pass into the path of Mitrovic, who controlled and finished emphatically.

Two minutes later it was game over. The overlapping Janmaat floated in a cross from the right and Wijnaldum got up to power another header past Ruddy to seal a brilliant hat-trick.

Norwich continued to attack and Redmond again hit the woodwork with a right-footed drive from the edge of the box.

But Wijnaldum deservedly had the final say as his 20-yard drive looped over Ruddy via a Stephen Whittaker deflection to put Newcastle in buoyant mood ahead of next weekend's Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland – and former St James' manager Sam Allardyce.

Inter 0-0 Juventus: Derby d'Italia ends in stalemate

    medel-cuadrado-inter-juventus-serie-a_eoh1hvtw5c0b1vjavb2th5idw.png

Inter missed out on the chance to climb to the top of Serie A as they played out a surprisingly low-key 0-0 draw with defending champions Juventus at San Siro.

Fiorentina's 2-1 defeat at Napoli earlier on Sunday handed Roberto Mancini's men the opportunity to replace them at the summit, but the point means Inter remain third, behind Roma on goal difference.

The latest edition of the Derby d'Italia was an evenly-matched affair and clear-cut goalscoring opportunities were at a premium - both sides striking the woodwork on one occasion as the two defences held firm.

Marcelo Brozovic's dipping shot was superbly touched onto the crossbar by Gianluigi Buffon midway through the first half, while Sami Khedira struck the base of the post with 20 minutes remaining.

The draw leaves Juve down in 14th, still eight points behind their rivals and nine adrift of leaders Fiorentina.

It has been a far from ideal start to the campaign for Massimiliano Allegri's Juve, although they will take heart from a commendable point.

Allegri's side will now look forward to a home Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday, in which they will aim to maintain their 100 per cent record in that competition.

It was Juve who had the first real sight of goal in the fourth minute when Juan Cuadrado saw his stinging drive palmed away at the near post by Samir Handanovic.

Following an otherwise quiet opening to the game, Inter burst into life midway through the half as a flurry of action saw Juve survive three scares.

After Inter had penalty appeals waved away when Brozovic's cross struck the arm of Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini put in a superb block to deny Stevan Jovetic a shot on goal.

In making the block, Chiellini collided with Buffon - the keeper subsequently receiving treatment - and Juve were grateful for his presence shortly afterwards as he brilliantly tipped Brozovic's wickedly curling effort onto the bar.

As in the opening period, Juve were first to threaten at the start of the second half and once again it was Cuadrado who tested Handanovic - this time the Colombian's shot squeezing between the legs of the goalkeeper and into the side netting.

Griezmann happy to retain Sociedad affection after Atletico win

    inigomartinezantoinegriezmann-cropped_1muj6are34jct1ozxk597fkvs9.jpg

Antoine Griezmann says he could never celebrate a goal against Real Sociedad after a subdued reaction to his stunning solo effort in Atletico Madrid's 2-0 Liga win at the Anoeta.

The France international returned to his former club in style, surging majestically through the Sociedad defence to produce a chipped finish in the ninth minute.

As when he netted in a victory over Sociedad in the Spanish capital last term, Griezmann offered scant acknowledgement to the goal and he received a standing ovation from the majority of the home supporters when he was substituted during the closing stages.

"I can never celebrate a goal against the club that gave me everything," the forward told television reporters.

Hosts Sociedad caused some late incidents after Griezmann's withdrawal, as Diego Reyes and Jonathas both talked themselves into red cards either side of Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco sealing the points with his first goal for Atleti in an ill-tempered affair.

"We knew it would be a difficult game because they are strong at the Anoeta," Griezmann said.

"We knew we would have few chances to score and that we would have to take them when they arrived."

Atletico are back into Champions League action against Astana on Wednesday night, but Griezmann is happy to have the matches coming thick and fast.

"Every player wants to play a match every three days because that's good – it means that you play European competitions," he added.

Benzema: I laughed at Arsenal rumours

    karim-benzema-atletico-madrid-real-madrid-la-liga_1flli3x5x1ahh15ywuuutfmxhf.jpg

Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema has revealed that there has never been any chance of him joining Arsenal, admitting that he laughs about the rumours with his brother and friends.

The France international was once again linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer, but a transfer never materialised.

And the striker has now explained that he is amused by the constant speculation, given he has no intention of leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.

Indeed, when asked during an interview with Journal du Dimanche if he had ever come close to swapping Madrid for Arsenal, he replied: "Never. Like every summer, I laugh about it with my brother and my friends. We wait for the media to come out with these rumours.

"In my opinion, I think that Real and Barca are the pinnacle in football. Why I would leave? I'm a starter for the best club in the world. I am happy; it's that simple."

Benzema, who joined Madrid from Lyon for €35 million in the summer of 2009, has scored six times in as many Liga outings so far this term.

Neymar tells Barcelona fans: I WILL sign new contract

    2094962_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Neymar has insisted that he will sign a new contract at Camp Nou amid interest from Manchester United.

The Brazil international held talks with the Red Devils over the summer but has allayed supporters' fears that he may turn down the offer of an improved deal with the Liga champions.

"The renewal is underway. I have many years of contract here and I'll sign, calm. The fans have to be calm," he told beIN Sports.

The forward's father had recently confirmed that the Brazilian held talks with Louis van Gaal's side over the summer, but the former Santos man suggested he is happy in Catalonia.

Neymar has been under added pressure in recently games due to the prolonged injury lay-off for Lionel Messi, but the 23-year-old was in scintillating form in Barcelona's 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano in Saturday's La Liga clash, netting four goals and providing a constant threat for the treble winners.

Head coach Luis Enrique praised the player as "electric" following his performance in the win, as the Catalans look to retain their title.

The Asturain coach's side face BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Tuesday with the players looking to turn a corner in the competition, as the side were booed during spells in their last European fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, despite their remarkable treble just months earlier.

Wenger: Arsenal need 'something special' to beat Bayern

    theowalcott-cropped_jsszz0904i5q1x1r1saa21tdj.jpg

Arsene Wenger has insisted that Arsenal will need "something special" to beat Bayern Munich in their Champions League clash on Tuesday.

The Gunners continued their impressive Premier League form this season with a 3-0 win at Watford on Saturday to stay within two points of leaders Manchester City.

It has been a different story in the Champions League, where back-to-back defeats against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos have left Wenger's men in an unenviable position ahead of their double-header with the Bundesliga giants.

And the Arsenal boss insists that the match with Pep Guardiola's side will be a tough test.

"We play against a big team, but we have proved ourselves from a bad position in the Champions League and we want to make something special against Bayern because that's the only way we can stay in the race," the Gunners manager said.

Some of Wenger's selections in the Champions League so far, most notably the decision to rest goalkeeper Petr Cech, have come under the microscope, but he suggested it will be a familiar line-up that takes to the field against Bayern at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

"For me the game was important because I knew to win was vital to stay in touch with the top teams and best way to prepare for Tuesday night," Wenger said after the win at Vicarage Road.

"I don't know yet [whether I will make changes] but there's no obvious reason to change the team completely.

"Maybe one or two, I don't know yet. I will see how everyone recovers.

"I could rest [Mesut] Ozil and [Alexis] Sanchez a little bit, but we have to put pace into the game.

Manchester City star De Bruyne shrugs off price-tag pressure

    2022792_heroa.jpg

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is in confident mood following his fine start to life at the Etihad Stadium, and says he is not at all fazed by the £54 million fee paid for his services this summer.

De Bruyne was the star of the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg last season, prompting City to fork out the second highest fee ever to be spent by a Premier League club.

The 24-year-old has hit the ground running in Manchester and was once again impressive as City beat Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday, and appears far from weighed down by the money spent to acquire his signature.

Asked whether he feels any pressure, he replied with a smile: "Personally no. I'm not the only player here that they paid a lot of money for. So you don't think about it. In the end you just try to play your football."

De Bruyne suffered an ignominious exit from English football when he was sold by Chelsea midway through the 2013-14 season, and it had been suggested that he does not possess the sufficient mental strength to thrive in England.

But the playmaker is confident that he will continue to disprove his doubters: "It's very different to two or three years ago. Now I'm playing at a higher level and I will only improve over time. I'm very happy with the way things are going and I just want to try to keep it up."

De Bruyne picked up his third Premier League assist in two games on Saturday, when he slipped in Raheem Sterling for the second of his three first-half strikes against Bournemouth.

And the Belgian is just as confident about his young team-mate's prospects and believes he and the former Liverpool man are starting to develop a lethal understanding.

"He's really good, he's only 20 years old so there's a lot more to come," he added. "But he made the goals look easy today and that will only help his confidence.

"He likes to run deep and that makes it easier to find him, I'll try to play that ball. Sometimes it will work well, like today, and other times maybe he will not arrive. But if he makes runs like that it's good for me.

"If a player has pace like that it's always an advantage."

Wenger vows Arsenal will attack Bayern

    arsenewenger-cropped_1x493vzepq7xs1ox6q3f8i941q.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has vowed to take the game to Bayern Munich when the Bundesliga giants visit the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Bayern have made a fine start in Group F, winning both of their matches, while the Gunners have fallen to shock defeats at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.

With back-to-back games against 2013 winners Bayern to come, Arsenal need an immediate upturn in fortunes if they are to avoid crashing out in the group stages of the competition for the first time since 1998-99.

Despite the daunting task of facing a Bayern side who have won 12 in a row in all competitions, Wenger is buoyed by his own team's recent good form.

"We're on a perfect run in the Premier League, and on the other hand it was perfect preparation for Bayern because we had no injuries and got the three points," Wenger said following the 3-0 win at Watford at the weekend.

"We are now in a position where we can really focus and give it everything on Tuesday night. I will have to see how we prepare for this game now and how we want to approach it.

"The confidence is there, the required result is there and we know exactly what is needed. Even a 0-0 draw is not good enough, so to score goals we will have to attack.

"If you can arrange for us to be 3-0 in 20 minutes, like we were against Manchester United, I will put you in charge for Tuesday night.

"That would be ideal, but it is difficult to plan [that] – we did not plan to be 3-0 [up] after 20 minutes against United.

"What we want to do is to play up to our level because that is what is needed against a big team.

"It is true that we have won before in Europe when everyone else thought it was not possible, but we want to do it again because we felt the pain was inflicted by ourselves.

"Maybe, subconsciously, we thought, 'Anyway, we will win these' [against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos] – now, to correct it, we need a great performance."

Van Gaal: Rooney 'an example for everybody'

    waynerooney-cropped_eyyho79jevnk1tzseo7vldeqj.jpg

Wayne Rooney's professionalism and leadership has surprised Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

The United captain's form has been questioned this season, but he made it eight goals for club and country this season with his strike in the 3-0 win over Everton.

Van Gaal lauded Rooney and said the England international led the way for everyone at United.

"I think he is an example for everybody," he said.

"Not only for his fellow players, but also for other players from other clubs and also for the manager because he is a very social human being and he has a professional attitude.

"And I could not imagine that when I was the coach of the Dutch national team before I came to United.

"I had heard other things but he has shown a fantastic attitude and I am very happy that he scored."

United take on CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday before a meeting with rivals City four days later.

Walcott: Arsenal can beat Bayern Munich

    alexis-sanchez-theo-walcott-arsenal_1ddayvge3hsew1hlbf0vq9epp3.jpg

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes his side can beat Bayern Munich if they replicate the same level of performance they produced in the 3-0 win over Manchester United.

The Gunners shocked Louis van Gaal's men with a stunning display of attacking football and followed that up with another 3-0 victory over Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.

Next up for Arsenal are Bayern in the Champions League group stage - with Arsene Wenger's men in desperate need of points after picking up none from their first two games.

Walcott said: "Playing against Bayern and their quality is of course going to be a challenge for us, but we are at home with our support and we need a similar sort of performance like we had against Manchester United.
"We know we can beat anyone and we’re going to be completely ready for this one.

“We need to move on from the first couple of results in the Champions League. We know we are capable of getting results against Bayern and we want to put things right.

“Looking at our last Premier League home match against United, the intensity of our game was different to what it was like against Olympiakos in the Champions League."
English clubs have struggled in the Champions League so far this season, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all tasting defeat.
But Walcott says the form of Premier League sides is temporary rather than an example that the quality of the division's leading clubs is on the wane.

"I think it is just a little blip at this moment in time," he added.

“I don’t think it will last long. You see from the amount of quality players in the Premier League shows that this league is one of the best.”

Ancelotti: I would never coach Inter

    2089312_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he would never consider coaching Inter out of respect for former club AC Milan.

Ancelotti spent eight years at the helm of the Rossoneri, winning two Champions Leagues and one Serie A title during his successful stint at San Siro between 2001 and 2009.

And the 56-year-old insists that he would never cross the Milan divide.

"I could not coach Inter," he told Goal. "Because I had so many years at Milan, it's a question of respect towards my history and the history of the club I have coached.

"There are many squads that I must avoid. I cannot go against my history."

Indeed, Ancelotti admitted that he even considered returning to Milan during the summer but ultimately decided against doing so as he had to undergo an operation on his back that required a significant period of rehabilitation.

"When I finished with Madrid, there was contact with [club CEO Adriano] Galliani," he explained. "We met in Madrid but I had to have this operation.

"I would have been out for four months and I wouldn't have been able to be at 100 per cent.

"So, while it disappointed me a little, it was the right thing to do and Milan understood this."

However, Ancelotti refused to rule out a return to Milan at some point in the future, adding that he would also consider another spell at Paris Saint-Germain, with whom he won the Ligue 1 title in 2013.

"I have had the good fortune to have enjoyed myself everywhere I have coached," the Reggiolo native added.

"For this reason, I can't say that I would not return to one club or another. I would certainly return to Milan, just as I would return to PSG.

"Regardless of how things finished, they are experiences of which I have great memories."

Lewandowski: You can't compare me with Messi & Ronaldo

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has called for comparisons with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to stop, insisting that the trio are different types of players.

Poland international Lewandowski has been in sensational form at the start of the 2015-16 campaign, scoring a phenomenal 12 goals in just eight Bundesliga matches, and 15 in his last seven in all competitions.

The 27-year-old's strike rate has seen him compared with La Liga's leading duo Messi and Ronaldo but Lewandowski is adamant they all play in different positions and that he is only focusing on making the most of the best moment in his career.

He told Goal: "They are different players, in different positions. Cristiano plays offensively on the left side, Messi centrally. I play up front. Of course I work back, take part in combinations and don't wait 90 minutes for the ball. I want to participate in the game.

"Often I am searching for space for 80 minutes. In the 81st the situation comes: I have space and can score the goal. Or I distract two defenders and create space for my colleagues. This is football, this is a team sport. We work together well, so it is easy for me.

"I am 27 and I want to be better every year, score more goals. My best time comes now. Hopefully it will carry on as long as possible! To be a striker, sometimes it is not easy. To reach the crucial situations, I have to fight in every game.

"My colleagues also take an important role. You are running, see the chance, but you do not get the ball. But you have to stay positive and concentrate fully."
Lewandowski also provided an insight into what makes him one of the deadliest strikers in Europe and insists that it's too early to be thinking about winning the European Golden Shoe.

"I am working very hard, with the team, in every training session and after training. In my position I have to fight, also with the defenders. Of course, technique is above everything but strength is also important for me. I must always be on the move and fight for my place in the box, outside the box I must combine with my teammates.

"For me the work already starts during my leisure time. It's not just football, many other things play a big role. When I was 18, 19 years old I was very small and slim. I knew that it was not enough if I wanted to compete on an international level. That's why I had to work more than other talents.

"At the moment I am not thinking about it [winning the Golden Shoe]. If I have a chance at the end of the season to get it, I will deal with it then. Now it's still too early. The next match is the most important for me.

"As a striker you have to stay calm. I know exactly what I need to do, also with my regeneration. You are playing 60 games and then the European Championship in France; you need a lot of strength. Many small things are necessary to keep the best form."

Pedro stuggling to adapt to 'hard' English football

Chelsea forward Pedro admits he is having difficulty adapting to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old scored on his Blues debut against West Brom in August but has since struggled to make an impact following his big-money move from Spanish and European champions Barcelona this summer.

Pedro has only added a goal against Walsall in the League Cup in September to his tally and the Spain international admits he has found English football to be "hard", although feels he is slowly settling in.

He said: "It's hard. It's very different to what I'm used to [at Barcelona]. But, little by little, I'm integrating more, adapting with my team-mates and the team and that's the most important thing.

"Everything is different, very different to the football I'm used to.

"I think there are a lot of differences, very physical football, very strong. A lot of players attack and it's always complicated. All the games are competitive and very balanced."

Falcao's grandmother criticises Mourinho & Van Gaal

Radamel Falcao’s grandmother believes the striker has not been given enough playing time at Chelsea and feels Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have not been “explicit” with him.

The 29-year-old scored only four goals in 29 appearances during his season-long loan spell at Manchester United last season, and has played just 192 minutes in the Premier League following his move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

When asked if she could explain Falcao’s inability to replicate the performances he showed before his cruciate ligament injury in January 2014, Dona Denis King Garcia told El Universal: “I do not understand what happened.

"After the injury he suffered last year before the World Cup he has tried to return and has played some good matches; but I also think the coaches he has worked with have not been explicit with him.

“You have to show confidence in him because that is the only way he can return to what he used to be [before his injury].

“At first he was used a lot, but after that he has been used very little; in those 10 or 15 minutes he's being given he can't do anything.

“And so it is very difficult for him. You have to give him more time to do what he does best.”
