Colombia 2-0 Uruguay: King James comes of age to book quarter-final berth

    430003_heroa.jpg

James Rodriguez scored twice - his first a stunning volley - to fire Colombia to a 2-0 win over Uruguay and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
His unstoppable 28th-minute strike on the turn is arguably the goal of the tournament so far, and he followed that up with a close range effort in the second period to end the game as a contest.

Colombia dominated possession in a nervy opening, although they were mainly limited to shots from distance against a Uruguay side without star man Luis Suarez on the back of his four-month suspension.Oscar Tabarez's men appeared content to sit deep but their resistance was broken when Rodriguez produced a spontaneous moment of brilliance to light up the match.

A lofted header back towards the Celeste penalty area was chested down on the turn by the Monaco man, who then swivelled and struck the ball first time on the volley into the top left-hand corner.

Stunned into action - with the rest of the stadium still taking in that wonder strike - Uruguay sought a swift response and Edinson Cavani found space on the left before his teasing cross was headed away by Carlos Sanchez.Despite the improvement, Uruguay's task became even more difficult in the 50th minute as Rodriguez doubled his tally.

Colombia worked the ball from right to left and Pablo Armero put in a wonderful cross to the back post, where Juan Cuadrado unselfishly nodded the ball down and back into the path of the youngster, who swept home from close range for his fifth of the tournament.

Uruguay desperately needed a quick goal and Cristian Rodriguez forced a fine stop from Ospina with an accurate left-footed shot that would have found the top corner but for the goalkeeper's intervention, before Cavani flicked a header just over the crossbar in the 70th minute.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward went close again with a low-angled drive late on but Uruguay's pressure was comfortably soaked up, as Colombia stormed into the quarter-finals.

James is the best player at the World Cup - Tabarez

    429994_heroa.jpg

Oscar Tabarez has proclaimed James Rodriguez to be the best player at the World Cup after the young Colombia star struck twice to eliminate his Uruguay side.
James netted both goals, one a stunning 25-yard volley, as Jose Pekerman’s team progressed to a quarter-final against Brazil.

And the Uruguay coach was full of praise for the 22-year-old in his post-match press conference.“I know him - not personally, but I’ve seen him play for a while. He arrived in Argentina at 17 and already showed his talent,” explained Tabarez.

“Talents are those who do things which have nothing to do with their life experience - [Diego] Maradona, [Lionel] Messi, [Luis] Suarez. They do things because they have certain gifts that make him special.

“It’s not up to me, but from what I’ve seen he’s the best player in the World Cup. I don’t think I’m exaggerating.”Tabarez added that his team tried their best to handle him but James was simply too good for them.

“We tried to limit him but he kept coming and he made his presence felt.“Hopefully he will continue to move on because he’s very young and football needs players with these characteristics.”

James has thanked Tabarez for his praise and is already looking forward to facing Brazil in the last eight.“It is a matter of great pride that someone like him has said that. I want to help and do my share so Colombia get far,” James said.

“Brazil are a hard team with great players and their history. We have to come out to win as we’ve always done. I’m at a good level and we’re also scoring goals, and I’m happy about that.“As a young man I always wanted to be [at the World Cup], it was a great dream and I hope we can make it far. We want to do even more because this is a team that wants to win a lot.”

Brazil and Colombia will meet in Fortaleza on Friday for a place in the semi-finals.

We missed Suarez, admits Uruguay defender

    429636_heroa.jpg

Uruguay struggled without Luis Suarez in the 2-0 defeat to Colombia in their last-16 World Cup clash, admitted Sebastian Coates.

Suarez missed Saturday’s match at the Maracana after he was banned from all football for four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay’s final group game.

Coates, who is Suarez’s team-mate at Liverpool, conceded after the game that the South Americans missed their star striker.

“Luis is a great player and we missed him,” Coates said. “But we have a lot of players without Luis who gave everything for the team.

Asked whether he thought Suarez would stay at Liverpool this summer, Coates responded: “Yes, I hope so.”

Colombia won thanks to two strikes from James Rodriguez as the midfielder became the leading scorer in the tournament with five goals.

Rodriguez’s first goal was a stunning volley from 25 yards in the first-half, but Coates does not believe the Monaco man has been the best player of the World Cup so far.

Coates said: “I don’t think he is the player of the tournament but he scored a great goal today, he scored two goals. So he’s a great player in a great moment.

“It was a great goal but we never gave up, which was very important for us.”

:cool:Wonder strike helps Rodriguez top Golden Boot table

    451394930.jpg

Colombian winger James Rodriguez scored both goals as his country booked a place in the last eight of the World Cup for the first time in their history as they defeated Uruguay 2-0.

The AS Monaco star broke the deadlock with a stunning volley – one of the goals of the championship – after 28 minutes, his shot flying high past Fernando Muslera, Rodriguez adding a second with a close-range effort after half-time to take his tally to five in the tournament.

His double takes him ahead of Thomas Muller, Lionel Messi and Neymar, who while converting Brazil’s crucial fifth spot-kick in their dramatic last 16 penalty shoot-out win over Chile, failed to convert any of the chances that came his way
    during 90 minutes and extra-time.

Afterwards, a delighted Rodriguez explained what the win meant to him and his country.“It’s a historic success,” said the 22 year-old. “Now comes the most difficult moment for us so far, we hope to get past the last eight though.
“The entire team did well, my team-mates were all crucial. We created many chances due to the speed and pace of the entire team.”

Barca and Madrid on red alert as James reveals La Liga dream

    429984_heroa.jpg

James Rodriguez has put Real Madrid and Barcelona on red alert after claiming that it would be a dream to play in La Liga in the future.

The 22-year-old scored a stunning volley that may prove to be the goal of the tournament in the first half, before bagging his fifth goal of the summer to seal a 2-0 win over Uruguay at the Maracana.

The double in Rio took the Monaco forward to the top of the Golden Boot table and set up a mouth-watering quarter-final with hosts Brazil next Friday.

The former Porto star could not have failed to catch the eye of European giants Barca and Madrid, and James fuelled summer transfer gossip by confessing after the game that he would love to play in La Liga.

"I would love to play in Spain," James told reporters after starring for Colombia in the last 16. "It would be a dream to play there - it is the best league in the world."

James cost Monaco €45 million when they bought him from Porto last summer, as well as forking out to sign fellow Colombian Radamel Falcao, though he has been absent from the World Cup through injury.

The South American duo helped to fire the Stade Louis II club to Champions League football this season with a second place Ligue 1 finish and, if James is not sold, he is bound to get a chance to impress on the European stage in 2014-15.
