'I like his lion-hair!' - De Laurentiis confirms Napoli interest in Fellaini

    432838_heroa.jpg

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed his interest in Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini - by revealing he is a fan of the player's hairstyle.

Goal understands United are willing to listen to offers for the Belgium international but the club's valuation of the player and his wages have proved to be a stumbling block for the Serie A side so far.

Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon reportedly met the player and his representatives in Belgium this week with the Premier League side hoping to recoup least €16 million of last summer's €34.5m investment.

And De Laurentiis has now claimed the player's famous hairstyle - although changed shortly after the World Cup - would suit the club's style and make Fellaini the ideal midfield partner for Gokhan Inler.

"Fellaini is one of the names of our midfield, but he's not the only one," De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss.

"His hairstyle could be perfect for the Neapolitan style. I like his 'lion-hair'. I have introduced Inler like a lion, Fellaini could compensate for his lack of hair."

The Italian outfit have been in the market for a midfielder for much of the summer, having made enquiries regarding Tottenham players Etienne Capoue and Sandro.

An agreement in principle is in place for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva to be reunited with Rafa Benitez in a season-long loan deal but the club are eager to pursue the possibility of signing Fellaini.

Pardew confirms Newcastle interest in Remy

    392231_heroa.jpg

Alan Pardew has confirmed Newcastle United are monitoring Loic Remy's situation once again.

Goal learned last week that the former loanee was back on the club's radar following the collapse of his move to Liverpool.

With Arsenal and Tottenham cooling their previous interest and parent club QPR not looking to use him, a move back to Tyneside - where he scored 14 goals last season - could be his only viable option.

Newcastle are looking to sign one more striker and Olympique Lyonnais' Alexandre Lacazette was their top target - but the player's demands, coupled with Lyon's asking price, makes a deal highly unlikely at this stage.

Subsequently, Newcastle are looking elsewhere and have Lorient's Vincent Aboubakar on their radar, along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - who they tried to sign before he joined Borussia Dortmund last summer.

However, a Remy return could become the deal that makes most sense for Newcastle and Pardew admits it is an option.

"I am surprised about what's happened with Loic because I thought he was signing for Liverpool and that door was slammed shut," said Pardew.

"I didn’t expect that, and we certainly had no problem with Loic during his time with us. So we shall monitor it as we go along."

On needing a new striker, he added: "Looking at our squad, we're still shy of a striker. That would be ideal. If we could get one that suited the club, we'll take that forward.

"I'm really pleased with the work we've done in the summer. It's far removed from the team that finished last year, and rightly so. Hopefully, we've invested well."

Neymar has revealed that he will return to action in Barcelona's Joan Gamper Trophy pre-season clash against Leon on August 18.

However, he is hoping to return to Barcelona for pre-season on August 5 before featuring in the annual Gamper game at Camp Nou.

"Im slowly recovering from the injury. I'll get to Barcelona 100 per cent," he told reporters at a promotional event in Brazil.

"I want to have a good season and I'm looking forward to helping my team-mates get good results. I also want to contribute to the Brazil team.

"I'm confident of playing in the Gamper game on August 18."

Neymar has since arrived in Japan to continue his recovery and work on personal commerical requirements.

Hernandez 'happy' to hear of Inter interest

    439986_heroa.jpg

Javier Hernandez has admitted he is aware of interest from Inter but refused to speculate on his future at Manchester United.

Hernandez, who has also been linked with Atletico Madrid, scored 20 goals in all competitions in his first season at Old Trafford but has since struggled to hold down a place in the starting XI, developing a reputation as a 'super-sub'.

The Mexican has never been fond of the label, however, leading to suggestions he could leave United due to the status of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney as the club's first-choice strike pairing.

“I know of Inter’s interest, I'm happy for this reason,” Hernandez told reporters on the Red Devils' pre-season tour of the USA, according to Corriere dello Sport.

“There are many clubs that want me, but at the moment I am a Manchester United player and it isn't respectful to talk about other teams. I don't know my future, we will see after the USA tournament.”

Former United captain Nemanja Vidic, who joined Inter upon the expiry of his contract in Manchester this summer, has expressed his admiration of Hernandez in recent weeks.

Atletico's structure is solid, says Simeone

    412161_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has reassured fans that the club's structure is solid, despte the sales of several key players this summer.

The likes of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis, key cogs in the capital club's title success last season, have been sold to Chelsea, while Thibaut Courtois has returned to Stamford Bridge after a loan spell.

However, the Spanish champions have signed Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann and Simeone feels they will still be capable of challenging.

"We're working from top to bottom," he said at a press conference.

"Now we will return to Madrid and find another group and we'll slowly prepare for the start of the season.

"Today we have the same structure we have had for three years. Obviously our attacking potential made us grow, but the structure is the most important and ours is solid."

Zaha: I couldn't do anything about Moyes rift

    440159_heroa.jpg

Manchester United forward Wilfried Zaha said he wants to force his way into Louis van Gaal's plans after being frozen out by David Moyes.

Zaha, 21, was Sir Alex Ferguson's final signing in charge of the club when he arrived at Old Trafford for €15 million last summer, but he played just four times under David Moyes in 2013/14.

Moyes was eventually sacked after United finished seventh in the Premier League and missed out on European football altogether.

With Dutchman Van Gaal now at the helm at Old Trafford, Zaha is relishing the opportunity to emerge from the shadows and stake his claim for regular football in Manchester after a forgettable season.

"To be honest, if you are not the manager's cup of tea you can't do anything about it," Zaha said when asked about Moyes."There was nothing I could do. It was definitely not my attitude. The manager had his way of playing and maybe I just didn't suit it.

"There was so much pressure on him, so I can't really blame him. I could have got a better chance but coming to United brings a load of pressure."Zaha was the only player in the travelling squad not to have played a minute in the United States prior to Tuesday's penalty shoot-out win over Inter.

But the Englishman was given time in the second half at FedEx Field and he showed glimpses of his potential in an impressive performance."I played all right and I'm just happy the manager is happy with my performance really," said Zaha. "I just have to work hard and I have just done what he has asked.

"He said if I worked hard I would get my chance. It definitely is [a fresh start].
"All I can do is work hard and see how the season goes. It's a clean slate for me."
Zaha is down the pecking order at United, with strikers Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez vying for a spot in the starting XI.
However, the former Crystal Palace man is buoyed by Van Gaal's history of promoting youth."I have heard that before he came, so I am buzzing to hear that he will give youngsters a chance," he said.

"That's all I really [wanted] since I came here. I just want to be a Manchester United player. Hopefully this season I will get the chance."

No rift with Mourinho - Lukaku

    440162_heroa.jpg

Romelu Lukaku denied holding a grudge against Chelsea after leaving the club to join Everton in a €35 million deal.

Lukaku spent last season on loan at at Goodison Park but made the move permanent on Wednesday after signing a five-year contract.

The move brought Lukaku's connection with the London outfit to an end, with the 21-year-old striker having played just 10 Premier League matches over three seasons at Stamford Bridge, although he spent the majority of the past two campaigns on loan at West Brom and Everton.

But the Belgian rebuffed suggestions he felt hurt by his lack of opportunities at Chelsea, although he made it clear he feels more comfortable as part of Roberto Martinez's side.

"I need to be at a place where it felt right and here I have the confidence of the technical staff and the trust of the supporters," Lukaku said.

"This is the place where I belong. I want to grow here and become a better player.

"We want to become one of the best teams in England and reach the top four. Most teams know we are a good footballing side.

"I don't have hard feelings against Chelsea. They gave me the opportunity to come to England. They gave me high hopes of playing in Europe. Without them I wouldn't be here.

"Of course [I'm happy to move permanently rather than another loan], I'm 21. It's time to have a stable career. It was important to be somewhere where you are there [permanently]."

Lukaku scored 15 goals in 31 Premier League appearances for Everton last term, following on from a haul of 17 in 35 games for West Brom the season before.

But the powerful forward, who took to Instagram to express his thanks to both Everton and Chelsea for making the move happen, believes he can get even better in his second season under manager Martinez.

"I had a feeling this was the best place for me to grow and develop. I'm very pleased to be here again. Roberto knows football very well and I can develop under him," Lukaku said.

"He's someone I need as a young footballer. He wants to make our team one of the best in England.

"I told them [Everton] very quickly I want to work under him and play for this club again. The rest was set up by the board and my agent."

Ter Stegen: I felt sorry for Messi

    435133_heroa.jpg

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen says he felt sorry for his new team-mate Lionel Messi in the wake of Germany's World Cup final victory over Argentina.

Joachim Low's side claimed a 1-0 win over the South Americans in Brazil and, although the young shot-stopper was delighted his nation were crowned champions, he spared a thought for the 27-year-old.

"I felt sorry for Messi but I celebrated the World Cup a lot, of course," he told Mundo Deportivo.

"I watched the final in Barcelona at the hotel where I'm living. I wasn't part of the team but I was really happy for my team-mates as a German.

"I hope playing for Barca helps me earn a Germany spot. To play for Barcelona will help me show my best qualities to the world.

"I knew my qualities and my experience and so do they. They followed me for a long time, but I don't know how long. When they contacted me, it was a beautiful moment.

"I know the pressure of being Barcelona's goalkeeper but I'm here to play my football and the football Barca want to play. I'm not afraid. I'm happy to be here."

Ter Stegen also voiced his admiration for Luis Enrique, who replaced Tata Martino as Barca coach this summer.

"I like the way he sees football and I like his personality. He's a direct person. He has a great personality and I think he's a normal guy.

"I have great respect for the work he is doing and how he coaches the team."

    :shocked::no:Signing Alexis Sanchez a mistake - ex-Arsenal defender Silvestre

    437812_heroa.jpg

Ex-Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has hit out at his former club for signing Alexis Sanchez, claiming that the Gunners already possess plenty of players just like the Chile World Cup star.

Sanchez, who failed to make the 2014 Goal 50 this week, recently completed his €40 million move to the Emirates from Barcelona in a transfer that has excited many fans.

But Silvestre, who played for Arsenal from 2008 to 2010 after almost a decade at Manchester United, is not impressed.

"Arsenal have already got that type of player - quick, sharp, fast - they have enough of them already in Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla," Silvestre told Goal.

"What they really need is someone like Olivier Giroud, I think that should be their priority at the moment.

"Sanchez could have gone anywhere after his tremendous World Cup but I do not think he is the type of player the club need right now."

Silvestre, who was capped 40 times by his country and went to two World Cups, also commented on the rising star of French football - Paul Pogba - who finished 38th in the Goal 50.

"He is 21 and he has consistently been doing well over the [last couple of] years," the 36-year-old noted.

"The way he has been playing for Juventus is very impressive. In the near future he will be a force for France."

Gerrard: Suarez was too good for Arsenal

    409831_heroa.jpg

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes it would have been a mistake for Luis Suarez to have moved to Arsenal.

The Uruguayan was the subject of intense interest from the north London club last summer as they tried – and failed – to trigger a release clause in the striker’s contract.

And after Suarez’s prolific final season at Anfield, which secured the 27-year-old various personal honours as well as a dream move to Barcelona, Gerrard thinks the advice he gave his team-mate last season has been completely vindicated.

“I would have been really sad and disappointed to see Luis go to Arsenal,” the 34-year-old told the Daily Telegraph.

“With all due respect to them, I said to him that he was too good for Arsenal. I said if you score 30 goals for us and win the PFA Player of the Year, the press Player of the Year – I knew he was going to win them – I told him Real or Barcelona will come for you.”

“I think he got the wrong advice last year from people around him, from people saying he needed to play in the Champions League and it did not matter who it was for.

“A lot of people might still think he should have given us one more, but my big dream was to play for Liverpool, and the foreign players’ big dream is to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona, that’s a fact.

“His wife is from Barcelona and I don’t think you can begrudge a player like that, who has worked so hard for his dream. You can’t go against him when he says he is leaving for Barcelona.

“His dream from the first day he came was to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona. Last summer when he was out in the cold and training on his own that’s the conversation I had with him. I said, 'Dn’t go to Arsenal’.”

Brendan Rodgers’ side finished second in the Barclays Premier League last term, pushing champions Manchester City all the way to the final game.

Liverpool have splashed the cash in the transfer market this summer, and despite the blow of losing Suarez, Gerrard thinks the Merseyside outfit are capable of launching another assault on the Premier League summit.

“Last year we were in it until the end and that has given us the belief that we are genuine title contenders,” he said.

“I believe if we had Luis Suarez we’d be favourites.

“I’m disappointed to see him leave now but I am happy for him that’s he has got what he wants and deserves. Since day one he has been phenomenal in training every day and in the games.”

James: I hope 'winner' Falcao joins Madrid

    437706_heroa.jpg

New Real Madrid signing James Rodriguez is hoping that his fellow Colombian Radamel Falcao joins him at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

The 23-year-old old attacking midfielder enjoyed a stellar World Cup as his side reached the quarter-finals, claiming the Golden Boot and earning a move to the Spanish capital in the process.

The European champions have also been linked with a move for Falcao, whom James played alongside at both Monaco and Porto, and the young playmaker hopes to be reunited with the former Atletico Madrid forward before the start of the new season.

"I'm sure he can play here," James told AS. "But I'm not the one who decides whether or not he goes. It's up to the president (Florentino Perez).

"But he could come here because he was the quality and attitude of a winner.

"I've played with him for four years, we were only apart when he left for Atletico. He has a winning mentality and that's what he had at Madrid. Hopefully he comes here."

James joined Madrid for a sum of €80 million but the 23-year-old is not taking his place in Carlo Ancelotti's first XI for granted.

"First, I have to train well to be among the XI," he insisted. "Almost all of the others have been together for three or four years.

"I have to respect them and come in little by little and when I get opportunities, show a high level. I'm happy because a dream is being fulfilled.

"Hopefully, everything goes well, I'm very excited and looking forward. I want to win titles with this great club.

"Since I found out that Madrid wanted me, I did everything in my power to go. It's big and it means that you have to be at a very high level."

James also admitted that he was not happy with the added media attention that has been forced upon him since his move to the Bernabeu.

"I don't like it at all," he confessed. "Leaving home and having the cameras all over you ... There's nothing better than going out and being calm. But I'm not at a point where I can do that.

"I understand and know how to handle it. I'm at a big club for the media."

Finally, Falcao urged his Colombia team-mates to try to persuade coach Jose Pekerman to remain in charge of the national team, despite reported interest from the Argentine FA.

"We all have to force Jose to stay," he declared. "He changed everything in our team for the better. He made good changes.

"If he doesn't continue, it will be sad and there will be a high barrier for his successor."

Mourinho: Lukaku didn't want to fight for Chelsea career

    439991_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has suggested that Romelu Lukaku lacked motivation at Chelsea prior to his €35 million move to Everton.

The Belgium international was unveiled as a Toffees player on Wednesday, Everton having agreed to pay a club-record fee to acquire the 21-year-old, who scored 15 goals during his original loan stay at Goodison Park in 2013-14.

And Mourinho has explained his reasons for allowing the prodigious youngster to leave, claiming he lacked the drive to become the club's first-choice striker.

“The thinking was, first of all, the fact that Romelu was always very clear with us that in his mentality and his approach he was not highly motivated to come to a competitive situation at Chelsea,” he said.

“He wanted to play for Chelsea but clearly only as the first choice striker - and at a club of our dimension it’s very difficult to promise a player that status.

“That reduced, immediately, his desire to come to us. After that Everton came with an important offer and because we want to be inside the Financial Fair Play rules, you have to analyse these situations.”

Chelsea spent €40m to sign Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid earlier this summer and also lured fan favourite Didier Drogba back to the club, thus pushing Lukaku down the pecking order.

And the striker has no regrets over his decision to leave the Blues, claiming Everton is the “best place to grow and develop as a footballer.”

“Roberto has been very influential in the deal,” he added at his unveiling. “He is someone who knows football and I want to learn from him and develop under him. He challenged me personally.

“I told him very quickly that I wanted to play under him. The rest was set up by the board and my agent. Now that I’m here I want to help my teammates.

“I decided very quickly that I wanted to come back here. I am 21, I need to play at a high level and with a good team. I needed to be in a place that felt right.

“I have the trust of the supporters here. I can grow and develop. I came back because I have a very good relationship with the players and the staff. I feel like I belong.

"I haven’t seen any of the lads but I have been in touch with all of them over the last two months.”

    :baffled:Cavani: I'm staying at Paris Saint-Germain

    402034_heroa.jpg

Edinson Cavani has reassured Paris Saint-Germain fans that he has no plans to leave the French champions after just one season.

The Uruguayan striker only joined the capital club from Napoli last summer but found himself playing in an unfamiliar wide role during his first season in Ligue 1.

A host of clubs, including Manchester United, have been linked with his signature but Cavani feels absolutely no desire to move on.

    "I'm certain that I'll stay - why wouldn't I?" the attacker told L'Equipe.

"I feel very good in Paris, I have a contract to respect at PSG. I'd prefer to be here. I feel good here.

"Like I've already said, that doesn't depend solely on the position of a player but also things that can happen at the club."

Cavani revealed that he has held talks with the coaching staff over his role at the club, but insisted that all of his previous positional concerns have now been addressed.

"The staff replied to what I had mentioned," the explained. "We had some small problem with respect to the position I wanted but I feel very good about that.

"I waited for the right moment to speak. It's important for a striker to play in a position which is natural for him. Now everyone knows by position and it's not worth talking about."
