:angry:De Gea agent hints at Real Madrid move

    666221_heroa.jpg

The agent of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has suggested that the Real Madrid target may not remain at Old Trafford for the entirety of his contract, remarking that "things change every five minutes".

The Spanish shot-stopper has been in sensational form for the Red Devils this season but has yet to be formally offered a new contract, with his current deal due to expire in 2016.

De Gea is understandably drawing admiring glances from the likes of Madrid, who are seeking a long-term heir to the declining Iker Casillias, while United snapped up veteran Victor Valdes on a free transfer to cover the possibility of the 24-year-old leaving.

And now super-agent Jorge Mendes, who also facilitated Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Manchester to Madrid, has added further fuel to speculation that De Gea could be the latest Galactico.

"David is amazing, he's brilliant," the Portuguese agent was quoted as saying by Marca when asked if De Gea could move to the Spanish capital.

"He's a Man United player and has a contract there. You have to respect that but things change every five minutes."

United boss Louis van Gaal, though, has previously insisted that De Gea would extend his current deal at Old Trafford after cementing his place as the club's No.1 goalkeeper.

Asked if he expected the keeper to agree an extension earlier in January, he replied: "I think so, yes. I think there is no problem for him to sign.

"When you are a [regular] player, then probably you are the best and then the manager is very happy that a player that is fixed in the line-up will stay."

Tensions between United and the Mendes camp are thought to be strained, though, with another of his clients, Radamel Falcao, having struggled for game time since joining the club on loan from Monaco - Mendes believes that he would be a certain starter at any other club in the world.

Mascherano apologises for referee rant against Atletico

    848592_heroa.jpg

Javier Mascherano has apologised for his vociferous arguments against the referee during Barcelona's Copa del Rey first-leg clash with Atletico Madrid.

The Argentina international was booked for his reaction when Guilherme Siqueira escaped a yellow card himself after bringing down Lionel Messi during the closing stages of Barca's 1-0 win on Wednesday.

Head coach Luis Enrique was forced to defend his players from accusations of trying to harass officials after the match, and Mascherano has now admitted he was wrong to demand further action against Siqueira having seen the incident again.

"Watching the play, it's true the player didn't deserve a yellow, I apologise," he was quoted as saying by AS. "On the pitch, the sensations you get mean you see it one way, and then you realise you were wrong."

Messi converted a rebound after seeing his penalty saved by Jan Oblak to hand Barca a slender lead heading into the second leg, and Mascherano hopes to see his side take the same level of intensity to the Vicente Calderon next week.

"[It was a] difficult game, a fight - as always - against a strong team," he continued.

"The result was important but we know we have a tough game on their turf, in front of their fans, where they're strong.

"They're a team who do everything with sense. They don't give you options in attack, in breaking their system. They hardly ever lose, so it's valuable to win and not concede.

"But it will be tough there. Hopefully we can go out with the same intensity, which will not be easy."

Ronaldo can play for another 10 years, says Mendes

    829152_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has another 10 years to offer to Real Madrid, according to his agent, Jorge Mendes.

The Portugal star claimed the third Ballon d'Or of his career this month - the second during his spell in the Spanish capital - after enjoying another sensational year with Madrid, but has been quoted as saying he would consider a move to Brazil before he retires from playing.

However, Mendes is convinced his client will end his playing days at Santiago Bernabeu but is confident he has another decade ahead of him at the highest level.

"I'm almost certain that, yes, he'll retire there at 38 or 39, because he has many years to give yet," Mendes was quoted as saying by Marca.

"You all know that he's the best example I can give of a professional, he's a person who takes great care of himself."

Madrid's next game is against Cordoba on Saturday.

Lucas Silva to Real Madrid is a done deal, says Cruzeiro vice president

    759912_heroa.jpg

Lucas Silva's transfer to Real Madrid has been agreed and will be announced imminently, according to Cruzeiro's vice president.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have long been pursuing a deal for the young midfielder, with Asier Illarramendi expected to be allowed the chance to leave the club once the Brazilian arrives at Santiago Bernabeu.

Cruzeiro official Marcio Rodrigues has since confirmed the 21-year-old has accepted the offer from the European champions - thought to include a six-and-a-half-year contract - and is expecting the deal to be made official soon.

"Lucas Silva's transfer deal is official and a statement will be made on Thursday," he told ESPN Brazil. "The player has decided it's time for him to leave.

"We won't have any problem finding a replacement. Various reserve team players are ready to step up."

Lucas Silva has played an integral role in Cruzeiro's back-to-back Brasileirao successes in the past two seasons.

    Ancelotti firm over Illarramendi future

    824702_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti insists Asier Illarramendi remains part of his plans at Real Madrid, despite the seemingly imminent arrival of Lucas Silva from Cruzeiro.

The midfielder has struggled to secure a regular starting berth at the Bernabeu, with Athletic Bilbao registering their interest in the former Real Sociedad player this week.

Madrid also appear to be close to completing a deal for Brazil Under-21 star Lucas Silva after Cruzeiro admitted terms had been agreed over a move, which would appear to spell the end for Illarra.

"Illarra is a Real Madrid player, nothing has changed," the Madrid coach said on Friday. "He is a player of Real Madrid and though it's true he hasn't played much, we still have confidence in him. He's important in the locker room."

Ancelotti was then quizzed over Brazil Under-21 star Lucas Silva, a midfielder the Italian has already admitted to being of interest to him.

"I can't speak about Lucas Silva because he isn't a Real Madrid player, I have to think about the players we have," he added.

The Champions League winners have a wealth of midfield options at their disposal, with 16-year-old Martin Odegaard completing his move to the club on Thursday and Luka Modric closing in on a return from injury.

"With his quality and intelligence, Odegaard is going to be a good player for Madrid, but it is normal he will play the rest of this season with the Castilla. I'm not sure when he will be ready to play for the first team. Next year we will decide.

He added: "We hope Modric could be ready for the Champions League."

Ancelotti also confirmed that Illarramendi or Sami Khedira will start Saturday's clash against Cordoba, with Isco ruled out through injury.

Suarez will get good numbers, insists Luis Enrique

    847312_heroa.jpg

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is confident Luis Suarez will end the season with "very good numbers" as he continues to struggle in front of goal for his new club.

The Uruguay international, 27, arrived at Camp Nou for €94 million from Liverpool in July but had to wait until October 25 to make his debut against Real Madrid after serving a four-month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

Since then he has found the back of the net just five times in 16 appearances in all competitions after scoring 33 goals for club and country last season, but Luis Enrique is remaining patient.

"There's no reason to be worried about Luis Suarez, the goals will arrive," he said ahead of Barca's clash with Elche on Saturday.

"All players can miss chances at any moment in any match. I'm sure he will get very good numbers, I don't have to be worried, but of course we want our strikers to get as many goals as they can."

"Inside the penalty area there are very few strikers who can move in the same way as Luis Suarez."

Suarez was guilty of missing several opportunities as the Catalans beat Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

He will have another chance to get amongst the goals against Elche, who Barca defeated 9-0 on aggregate in the last-16 of the Copa del Rey earlier this month, though Luis Enrique warned his side would be beaten if they take their opponents lightly.

"The league is full of surprises," he said. "There are no easy matches, so we will be well prepared.
"If you play with no intensity, anyone can complicate your life."

Barcelona are sat in second place ahead of the weekend, just a point adrift of leaders Real Madrid in La Liga, though their rivals do have a game in hand.

'Odegaard wrong to snub Bayern and Guardiola'

    847242_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola's assistant coach Hermann Gerland believes Martin Odegaard would have been better off at Bayern Munich than at Real Madrid.

The Norway international, 16, completed his move from Stromsgodset to Madrid earlier this week, snubbing interest from Bayern as well as a number of other European clubs.

However, Gerland believes the attacking midfielder made the wrong decision to join the Santiago Bernabeu side and feels the Bundesliga champions would have been a better destination.

"When so much is written about a 16-year-old, he's got to be an extraordinary player," Gerland told reporters.

"I briefly spoke with him and I told him that he should pick the club with the best coach. And for me, the best coach works for Bayern.

"Guardiola would have been perfect for him and knows how to deal with young players."

Madrid's head of public relations, Emilio Butragueno, stated on Thursday that Odegaard will be focused on featuring for Madrid's reserves this season, with the occasional chance of playing for the first team.

"Martin will train with the first team and with Castilla and he will play for Castilla until the end of the season, but if Carlo Ancelotti wants to call him up to the first team, he will be at the coach's disposition."

Ter Stegen: I hate being backup, I want to be Barca No.1

    493431_heroa.jpg

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has admitted that he is unhappy with his role as back-up goalkeeper and has set his sights on the No.1 position at Barcelona.

The Germany international, 22, joined the Catalans from Borussia Monchengladbach in May 2014, but Luis Enrique has so far preferred Claudio Bravo between the sticks in La Liga.

Nevertheless, Ter Stegen remains hopeful of dislodging the Chile international at some stage this season.

"I am happy with the support from the fans and the work I do with my team-mates, but I am not satisfied with my role," Ter Stegen said to TV3.

"The coach has been using me in the Champions League and Copa del Rey, but I also want to play in the Primera Division.

"It will not be easy, though, because Bravo has been doing very well."

Ter Stegen has made 10 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona so far this season, keeping seven clean sheets in the process.

Bravo, meanwhile, has kept 12 clean sheets in 19 La Liga games.

Pekerman backs Falcao to make it at Manchester United

    821762_heroa.jpg

Colombia boss Jose Pekerman is confident Radamel Falcao will overcome a difficult start to life at Manchester United. The 28-year-old striker moved to Old Trafford on a big-money loan deal from Monaco in the summer but has struggled to establish himself in England.

A series of injuries have prevented him from displaying the kind of prolific goalscoring form that made him such a feared marksman at the likes of River Plate, Porto and Atletico Madrid.

Falcao was dropped by United boss Louis van Gaal for the recent Premier League home defeat by Southampton and has managed only nine starts under the Dutchman all season.

With this summer’s Copa América to consider, Pekerman admitted to being concerned by the forward’s situation, but backed him to demonstrate his quality.
“It’s a difficult period for him, but he’s a proven player with regard to his mentality and he’ll keep on working hard,” Pekerman told Caracol Radio station.

“I’m sure that this [difficult period] will just be temporary and he will come through it, I don’t have any doubt.“The most important thing is that he is well [after his injuries].

“Sometimes these situations are not easy… it’s a shame because he’s a lad we want to be playing regularly as he’s a great player, but I expect it will sort itself out soon.”

After such an impressive World Cup in Brazil, hopes are high that Colombia can challenge at the Copa América. However, as with Falcao’s situation, Pekerman acknowledged that it was difficult to ensure that his players would all arrive at the top of their game in the summer.

“At the moment things are not the same for all our players, as each of them has differing personal situations," he said.

“When the moment comes, we will look to have them in the best shape possible and think about the Copa América.”

:(Jorge Mendes tells Manchester United: Otamendi is not for sale

    674131_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have been in touch with super-agent Jorge Mendes over a possible move for Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, but have been told the 26-year-old is not for sale.

Otamendi almost joined United before moving to Valencia from Porto in January last year, but the Red Devils pulled out of a deal and allowed the Spanish side to swoop for the former Velez Sarsfield defender.

The Argentina centre-back was loaned out to Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro in 2014, but has become a fan favourite at Mestalla this term and scored the winner in his side's 2-1 win over Real Madrid earlier in January.

Signed prior to the investment of Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, Otamendi is now seen as the cornerstone of Valencia's exciting new project and United were told by Mendes there is no chance of a deal at the moment.

Manager Louis van Gaal is still seeking a strong central defender and Otamendi's aggressive style fits the bill for the Old Trafford outfit, but the Argentine's release clause stands at a prohibitive €50 million and Valencia's new-found wealth means they have no need to sell.

Mendes, meanwhile, is keen to safeguard his working relationship with Lim which has seen several Gestifute clients move to Mestalla in recent times, including coach Nuno, midfielder Andre Gomes, forward Rodrigo and right-back Joao Cancelo.

Wenger: Work permits stopped me signing Di Maria at 17

    828452_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he would have signed Angel Di Maria at 17-years-old if not for work permit issues.

The Argentina international midfielder joined Manchester United from Real Madrid for a British-record €75 million but came close to a move to north London in 2007 before leaving Rosario Central for Benfica instead.

And as Wenger faces a battle to ensure that Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista can move to England if a deal is completed, he feels that the "politically correct" work permit system should be left behind.

"Ideally it would be to open it completely: anyone can come in," he told reporters. "At the moment, we are in a position where they force you to spend money on a player who sometimes you have identified.

"We had identified Di Maria when he was 17. We wanted him to come here but he goes to Portugal and from Portugal he goes to Spain. Why? Because he could not get a work permit. That means that he can only come to England once he's worth a huge amount of money.

"What does it mean if, at the end of the day, he comes into the country anyway, with the only difference being it's for a huge amount of money? And who do you pay that to? A club like Real Madrid, who don't need the money."

Wenger's hopes of securing a deal for Gabriel are "50-50" as he seeks cover for a stretched back line, with Arsenal fifth in the Premier League.

:angry::angry::baffled:Van Gaal: Playing a 4-4-2 makes my ass twitch

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has hit back at critics of his 3-5-2 formation and says that his side lack balance when they play with a back four, causing the Dutchman's "ass to twitch".

Despite having only lost once in their last 13 matches in all competitions, the Red Devils have been criticised for a series of laboured performances, struggling to overcome QPR and minnows Yeovil Town, with fans calling for a change of system – a plea which the manager dismissed.

Despite more emphatic results playing with 4-4-2, Van Gaal remains convinced that the formation is too exposed and insists he will continue to field a back three.

"I know that, with 4-4-2, the stats are giving positive results, we have won more with 4-4-2 in a diamond, but, when you analyse the games, then we have twitched our ass on the bench," he told reporters ahead of Friday's trip to face Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth round.

"I said to my players I was squeezing my ass but I knew that was the wrong expression. I meant I have twitched my ass on the bench because we were out of balance. We won against West Ham playing 4-4-2 for instance but all the time it was twitching your ass and I don't like it.

"After I switched the system we won nine in a row [sic] then we lose one game and the discussion about the system starts up again. It's ridiculous."

Van Gaal is convinced that results, and performances, will pick up again as his side become more accustomed to the 3-5-2 formation, while he also expanded on his decision to pick Angel Di Maria up front at Loftus Road.

"I do not feel the players are completely comfortable with the new system yet," he continued.

"I would like them to be more comfortable but we are working on this in the middle of the season so we are doing a lot of things during the matches."

On Di Maria, he added: "It was something I wanted to try because we needed pace up front to stretch the game. When we play 4-4-2 Di Maria can play left midfield; in the 3-5-2 we haven't seen him so much because he has been injured.

"Then he came back and I tried him as a striker because, when you have pace in that position, you stretch the pitch and make a bigger space for your midfielders. I tried it in a game because I didn't have the chance to do it in the preparation at the beginning of the season."
