Cambridge United 0-0 Manchester United: Van Gaal's men held at bay by League Two side

    852482_heroa.jpg

Manchester United were held to a draw in the fourth round of the FA Cup by a disciplined Cambridge United.

The fourth-division club ceded the majority of possession, particularly in the second half, but held on in difficult weather conditions to earn a lucrative replay at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils, though pressing their advantage visibly in the final stages of the game, struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.

Their biggest chance came in stoppage time when Adnan Januzaj crept through the massed ranks and forced goalkeeper Chris Dunn into an outstanding double save which kept the Us in it.

Radamel Falcao and James Wilson started up front for the visitors in the absence of the rested Wayne Rooney, while Adnan Januzaj was handed his first start since November.

The hosts had captain Tom Champion available after a knee injury scare, while former Manchester United midfielder Luke Chadwick was on the bench.

Marouane Fellaini's foul on Norwich City loanee Cameron McGeehan handed Ryan Donaldson the chance to deliver a teasing free kick that Tom Elliott headed just wide after eight minutes.

The visitors posed their first threat two minutes later when Daley Blind scampered down the left before forcing a near-post save from Dunn but they were let off at the other end when Liam Hughes side-footed wide from Donaldson's poorly defended corner.

A wayward pass from Phil Jones almost handed the lively Donaldson, scorer of the winning goal in the last round against Luton Town, an opportunity but the former Newcastle midfielder's first touch let him down and the danger was snuffed out.

With Van Gaal's side struggling for fluency, Angel Di Maria summed up their frustration by clearing the stand with a speculative effort midway through the half and things should have got a whole lot worse for the overwhelming favourites when Cambridge defender Coulson inadvertently cleared a goalbound effort off David de Gea's line before heading over from point-blank range.

Di Maria still found time to swing a free kick high and wide as the Argentine winger continued to struggle for an impact.

The Premier League side initially struggled to lift the tempo after the break but only a fine save from Dunn kept the scores level in the 63rd minute. Michael Carrick's expert through-ball sent Falcao free and the Colombia international fired a low shot towards goal which the keeper parried over the crossbar.

Van Gaal introduced Robin van Persie and the Dutchman should have scored with a close-range half-volley from a wonderful scooped pass from Di Maria.

Manchester United continued to press forward in injury time and there was late drama when Cambridge struggled to clear their lines, Dunn once more called upon to deny Di Maria's drilled effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Bochum 1-5 Bayern Munich: Birthday boy Robben runs the show in friendly thrashing

    852242_heroa.jpg

Birthday boy Arjen Robben scored twice and had a hand in two other goals as Bayern Munich came from behind to win 5-1 at Bochum in their final friendly before the Bundesliga resumes following a mid-season break.

Robben - who turned 31 on Friday - cancelled out Danny Latza's superb opener before Dante met the Dutchman's corner with a powerful downward header to put Bayern ahead on the stroke of half-time.

Second-half substitute Mario Gotze netted within three minutes of his introduction following a slick passing move involving Robben and Franck Ribery.
And Robben put the seal on fantastic individual display with a superb 20-yard curler 12 minutes from time before Sebastian Rode's close-range finish completed the rout.

Pep Guardiola will be pleased with the professionalism shown by his Bayern players, who return to Bundesliga action at Wolfsburg next Friday. Latza put the hosts - 11th in the second tier of German football - ahead in style after just five minutes.

Stefano Celozzi's cross was only headed clear as far as Latza on the edge of the penalty area and he struck a sweet first-time volley across Manuel Neuer. Bochum goalkeeper Michael Esser denied Robert Lewandowski and Robben saw a shot curl just wide before Bayern's positive response to going behind led to the equaliser.

Robben played a neat one-two with Thomas Muller that saw the Germany striker backheel the ball into the path of his team-mate to coolly slot home. Bayern edged ahead when Dante slipped away from his marker to nod Robben's inswinging corner low past Esser.

Robben, Ribery and Gotze combined to allow the latter to make an instant impact following his 63rd-minute introduction from the bench. Fifteen minutes later came the pick of the goals as Robben dispossessed a Bochum player, cut in from the right and curled into the top corner before he was substituted to avoid risk of injury.

Rode got in on the act with six minutes remaining when a failed headed clearance allowed him to poke home as Bayern were at their ruthless best.

Ancelotti: Mourinho's Madrid era has been forgotten

    824702_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that Jose Mourinho's era at Real Madrid has been forgotten and denied that there is negativity surrounding his predecessor's time at the helm of the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portuguese coach left La Liga in 2013 for Chelsea after three years with the Blancos amid a final season that was plagued with rumours of discontent in the dressing room.

Despite being determined to consign Mourinho's spell in Spain to ancient history, Ancelotti suggested that the two-time Champions League-winning coach did not leave Madrid on bad terms.

"I don't know Mourinho's methods particularly well," the coach told reporters. "He works in the same way that I do. We work a lot with the ball.

"When I came here I didn't hear a bad word about him. I don't what happened with the players when he was here. When I arrived another cycle began and the other one is forgotten."

Ancelotti also passed comment on the form and fitness of Ronaldo, who won the Ballon d'Or earlier this month but has only impressed intermittently in 2015 as Madrid have won just two of their five games since the turn of the year.

"I say the same thing as I said to the squad, that Ronaldo is always at his peak," he added. "I have not seen any deterioration in him.

"It's true he hasn't scored in a couple of games recently, but his physical and mental condition is always maximum.

"I can explain to you how we work with all the players: they do pool work with cold and hot water. I think Ronaldo does more work on his own at home and you also have to take into account his genetic make-up."

Madrid are top of La Liga by a single point over Barcelona, but have a game in hand on their big rivals, and are in action on Saturday against a resurgent Cordoba side.

Inzaghi: Milan are on the edge but my job is safe

    851372_heroa.jpg

AC Milan boss Filippo Inzaghi is adamant that he is not on the brink of being fired despite the club's recent poor run of form. The ex-Rossoneri striker replaced former team-mate Clarence Seedorf in the dugout in the close-season for his first senior coaching post.

However, Inzaghi has struggled to help the club improve their on-pitch fortunes and a four-match winless Serie A run has left them in eighth place - seven points adrift of the Champions League places.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Milan have sounded out former Roma boss Luciano Spalletti and that defeat at Lazio on Saturday could spell the end for Inzaghi. However, the coach is unconcerned, claiming that there is always pressure when you are in charge of a club the size of Milan in the modern footballing era.

"The president Silvio Berlusconi has been calling me all week twice a day," Inzaghi told reporters. "I am fully aware of his closeness and that of the club's in an uneasy moment.

"I am sure that we will come out of it. Every match is decisive for me. We have two tough matches against Lazio on Saturday in Serie A then in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday. Nothing has been compromised because we’re in a normal position in the league table.

"Often all you need is just one match, a spark to get out of it. I expected a bit of a telling off from Berlusconi which didn't happen because he knows that we're giving our all and working very well."A coach makes mistakes even after 25 years of coaching. I am moving on with my team convinced of my ideas.

"The criticisms make me stronger, perhaps because in these 20 years I didn't always receive compliments. I am sure that we will do well based on the hunger that I saw in training by my players. I feel very calm."

Milan's latest setback came in a 1-0 home defeat to Atalanta last weekend and Inzaghi stated everyone is desperate to bounce back at the Stadio Olimpico this weekend. He added: "We all have the desire to show what we can do. Tomorrow we have to show this on the pitch. Words serve very little."

Muller: Bayern would love another treble

    820522_heroa.jpg

Thomas Muller says Bayern Munich would love to propel towards another treble in 2014-15, replicating their clean sweep two years ago.

In Jupp Heynckes' final season in charge at the Allianz Arena, the Bavarians triumphed historically in the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

Last season, Bayern won four trophies out of a possible six (the BuLi, DFB-Pokal, Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup) but they missed out on defending their European title, and Muller would love an opportunity to bag another treble success.

"I play with great players," the 25-year-old forward told TZ. "We've got a lot of points thanks to a lot of good work.

"Inevitably, you end up getting linked with things like the treble when you compete at the top, no matter what competition. If the chance to win the treble comes again this year and we have the chance to grab, then we are also very happy to pack up.

"Of course our goals are to win games. That is why we are already well on track towards winning [the Bundesliga] at the end of the year, with the gap being a safety net in case anything unexpected happens.

"The 11-point lead is very comfortable but you have to make sure you maintain it. We just need wins, as always are expected from Bayern."

The Germany international also commented on the shock of demise of Borussia Dortmund, who finished runners up last season but are placed second-from-bottom - in the relegation zone - with half of 2014-15 played.

"The first half of the season for BVB went the way no expert could have predicted," Muller added. "Dortmund certainly have the quality to go on a winning streak of several games, however.

"The Dortmund who we are accustomed to in the league have not necessarily disappeared."

    Real Madrid sign Lucas Silva

    522811_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Brazilian starlet Lucas Silva from Cruzeiro.

The midfielder has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the European champions, who have been linked with the South American for a while.

The 21-year-old - who had been linked with a host of clubs over the past few months and is reported to have snubbed Arsenal to link up with Carlo Ancelotti's men - has featured for Brazil's Under-20 and Under-21 levels

A statement released on Friday said: "Real Madrid and Cruzeiro have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Lucas Silva, who has signed for the club until June 30, 2020.

"The player will be presented on Monday, January 26, at 13:00CET at the Santiago Bernabeu, after undergoing a medical examination.

"Later, Lucas Silva will go out on to the turf of the Bernabeu with the shirt of Real Madrid and meet the media in the press room."

Man Utd dropped to Cambridge's level, fumes Van Gaal

    852632_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is frustrated that his side played so far under their potential as they drew 0-0 with Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Red Devils were held at bay in difficult conditions by the League Two side, with the Dutchman concerned that his players allowed themselves to drop to the hosts' level rather than attacking the game as a squad of their stature, though arguing that "every aspect of the match is against us".

"We made the same error as against Yeovil and QPR," he fumed to reporters. "We played in the same style as the opponent and that we don't have to do. That was our error.

"[In the] second half, we played much better. We played on the floor and that's a different style. It was a pity we had to wait again until half-time but, in the second half, I was pleased.

"But we didn't score and I have to give credit to this club, of course. Cambridge United played very well, very well organised with heart and they fought 'til the end but we could have scored, I think, and now we have an extra match.

"We're still in the cup and that's the most important thing. I've seen before the big clubs lose against small opponents. It's because every aspect of the match is against us," Van Gaal continued in trying to explain the stalemate.

"We have to come here. The pitch is not so good, that can influence that you play in another play style. The opponents are always giving a lot more than normal. Defending is always easier than attacking. You have seen the referee, it's always the same. Everywhere I've coached these games, always the same.

"I know it's very difficult to beat such an opponent in such circumstances. I said the same before Yeovil Town. We know everything is against us but you have to survive and I know also that attacking is much more difficult than defending.

"But in the first half we passed 45 minutes without doing what we have to do. Second half, okay, we could have scored, [Robin] van Persie could score, [Radamel] Falcao could score - but the goalkeeper was good."

Southampton 2-3 Crystal Palace: Chamakh & Sanogo star for soaring Eagles

    854512_heroa.jpg

Marouane Chamakh netted twice as Crystal Palace twice came from a goal down to overcome Southampton 3-2 and reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

All of the goalmouth action occurred in an incredible first half at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday, as Chamakh struck either side of Yaya Sanogo's first goal for Palace to ensure progress.

Graziano Pelle gave Southampton an early lead from a corner, but that advantage was short-lived as Chamakh levelled by converting a rebound.

Scott Dann's own goal restored the home side's lead, but once again Palace's response was swift when Sanogo shot home to make it 2-2 after just 21 minutes.

Chamakh then found the winner shortly before half-time with a composed finish, and the visitors were able to hold on to their advantage throughout a less eventful second period.

The result means Palace have now won all four matches under the leadership of Alan Pardew, while defeat for one of his former clubs ended an eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Wilfried Zaha threatened inside the opening 60 seconds as he fired narrowly over from the edge of the box, but it was Southampton who went in front after nine minutes.

Palace failed to deal with James Ward-Prowse's corner, and Pelle was on hand to bundle home his first goal in eight games.

The visitors were level within two minutes, however, as Chamakh poked home after Fraser Forster had spilled Sanogo's shot.

Forster kept out Sanogo soon afterwards, and Southampton were grateful for that save as they restored their advantage in the 16th minute when Ryan Bertrand's cross was turned into his own net by Dann after a breakdown in communication with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Forster then denied Fraizer Campbell as the all-action opening continued, but three minutes later the keeper was unable to prevent Sanogo from equalising for a second time as the striker converted from Zaha's pass.

Ward-Prowse and Steven Davis both went close from distance for the hosts either side of the half-hour mark, but it was Palace who led for the first time six minutes prior to the interval.

Joel Ward embarked on a strong run down the right and fed Chamakh, who took a touch and rounded Forster before slotting home.

In the second half, Ronald Koeman introduced Shane Long off the bench in a bid to find an equaliser, but the forward's contribution lasted just 13 minutes as he left the field having hurt his right arm in a collision with Ward.

Southampton pressed hard in the final stages to earn themselves a replay and Hennessey produced a fine save to keep out Eljero Elia's drive two minutes from time, which allowed Palace to hold firm and book their place in the fifth round for the first time since 2010.

Blackburn Rovers 3-1 Swansea City: Nine-man visitors crash out

    853942_heroa.jpg

Rudy Gestede and Craig Conway scored late goals to earn Blackburn Rovers a 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round victory over nine-man Swansea City on Saturday.

Benin international striker Gestede has been heavily linked with a move away from Ewood Park in recent days, but popped up in the 78th minute to put the home side in front before Conway netted with a low drive 11 minutes later.

Kyle Bartley had seen red in the sixth minute after being judged to have brought down the lively Josh King just outside the penalty area as the last man, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.

Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled the trigger from distance to open the scoring with a stunning strike after 21 minutes, although that lead was soon cancelled out by Chris Taylor.

The Blackburn midfielder turned in the area after some neat build-up play to power the ball beyond goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski two minutes later.

The match – played out at a sparsely populated Ewood Park – looked destined for a replay during a quiet second half, but Gestede's 13th goal of the season put Championship side Blackburn ahead before Conway added a third.

Swansea's bad day at the office got worse when Sigurdsson was sent off for a late tackle on Taylor in the closing stages.

The Welsh side have been linked with a move for Blackburn's Jordan Rhodes in recent days, and the Scotland international, along with fellow in-demand frontman Gestede, had to settle for a place on the bench, but lone striker King soon proved his worth by making the run that led to Bartley's early dismissal.

The centre-back had a coming together with King just outside the box and duly was given his marching orders.

Fabianski got down well to keep out the resulting free-kick from Tom Cairney, who tested the goalkeeper again with a curling effort from distance after 13 minutes.

However, it was the 10 men of Swansea who broke the deadlock in the 21st minute – Sigurdsson burying a wonderful strike from 25 yards after drifting in from the left.

It took just two minutes for Blackburn to pull level, though.

Marcus Olsson's cross from the left was nodded down by Cairney, with Taylor turning well on the edge of the six-yard box to power home and leave Fabianski with no chance.

Cairney deceived Jonjo Shelvey with a clever turn in the box before firing over at the beginning of the second half, as he and King continued to cause problems for the Swansea back line.

Gestede came on in place of the impressive King on the hour mark, rendering him cup-tied should he leave Ewood Park, while Swansea were able to bring on Jefferson Montero after a month out with a hamstring injury.

Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer also brought on Rhodes, but it was Gestede who gave Blackburn the lead - eventually prodding home from close range after Swansea failed to clear their lines from a left-wing cross.

Conway – who like Gestede played for Swansea's fierce rivals Cardiff City in the past – made absolutely sure of the win with a low drive that squirmed past Fabianski.

Sigurdsson's red then completed the visitors' misery after a late challenge on Taylor.

Cordoba 1-2 Real Madrid: Bale wins it from the spot after Ronaldo red

    854692_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale was the hero for Real Madrid as his penalty snatched a 2-1 win over Cordoba on Saturday after Cristiano Ronaldo had been sent off.

Ronaldo was given a straight red card for kicking out at a Cordoba defender with the score deadlocked at 1-1 eight minutes from time at the Estadio Nuevo Arcangel on Saturday.

However, Bale spared his team-mate's blushes when he converted from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after his own free kick had been handled - with Cordoba's Federico Cartabia receiving a second booking for that offence.

Real therefore move four points clear of Barcelona ahead of the Catalans' trip to Elche later on Saturday, but Carlo Ancelotti will be concerned by his side's performance and the fact Ronaldo - who cut a frustrated figure throughout the clash - could now face a three-game ban for violent conduct.

Real endured a dreadful start as Nabil Ghilas confidently converted from the penalty spot after Sergio Ramos handled Bebe's shot just three minutes in.

Cordoba's confidence continued to grow after they had taken the lead, with Bebe, Ghilas and Cartabia looking particularly threatening on the counter.

Manchester United flop Bebe almost put the hosts two goals to the good in the 18th minute, firing just wide of the post following a driving run into the penalty area.

Despite appearing somewhat rattled by Cordoba's bold approach, Real eventually restored parity through Benzema just before the half-hour mark.

The France striker stabbed home from close range after James Rodriguez's corner was flicked on by Bale.

Real struggled to build upon their equaliser, however, with their star-studded frontline having little luck carving out clear-cut chances against a well-organised Cordoba defence.

Ancelotti failed to inspire an improvement with his half-time words, as Cordoba remained just as threatening going forward.

In fact, the hosts appeared the more composed of the two sides in attack and went close twice in quick succession in the 56th minute.

Cartabia first smashed a fierce effort just wide of the top-left corner from 25 yards, before Bebe fired straight at Iker Casillas after a strong solo run.

Their best chance came 12 minutes later, though.

Florin Andone pounced on Raphael Varane's weak header and looped an effort over the approaching Casillas, but the ball bounced up and hit the bar.

Cordoba appeared set to earn a well-deserved point when Ronaldo was dismissed shortly after - the Ballon d'Or winner reacting angrily to close attention from his markers during a free kick - but Bale was on hand to nick all three points with his late, late penalty.

Sunderland 0-0 Fulham: Rodwell sees red in dour draw

    854682_heroa.jpg

Sunderland's miserable home form continued in the FA Cup as the Premier League strugglers were held to a goalless draw by Championship side Fulham on Saturday.

Gus Poyet's men have only won twice at the Stadium of Light this season in all competitions and that run was extended as the visitors earned a fourth-round replay.

Fulham were much the better side in the first half and would have been ahead had Cauley Woodrow and Moussa Dembele taken good openings.

With home chances at a premium, Sunderland fans had failed to see anything from new signing Jermain Defoe until he was denied on three occasions by Marcus Bettinelli around the hour mark.

Jack Rodwell's red card after 65 minutes handed Fulham the initiative, but Ross McCormack and Hugo Rodallega were unable to find a way through.

The draw means both sides will go into the hat for the fifth round on Monday, ahead of a replay at Craven Cottage.

Poyet made three changes from the side beaten at Tottenham last weekend as Vito Mannone was given a rare start in goal, with Defoe handed a home debut alongside Steven Fletcher in attack.

The visitors opted to leave midweek hat-trick hero McCormack on the bench and Fulham began to threaten after soaking up early Sunderland pressure.

Woodrow was first to test Mannone with an effort from the edge of the penalty area after 14 minutes, with Seko Fofana heavily involved in their attacking play.

The young Frenchman was at the heart of their next foray forward midway through the half as he managed to find Woodrow again, but Sunderland scrambled his effort to safety.

As the hosts continued to struggle for momentum, Dembele brought another save out of Mannone, his low shot easily held by the Italian goalkeeper.

Sunderland had failed to create any clear chances as half-time approached before Sebastian Larsson finally forced Bettinelli to make a sharp save with his legs from a low drive.

Any momentum they may have created before the break disappeared early into the second half as Fofana got back on the ball, the 19-year-old seeing a low shot deflected narrowly wide.

Defoe's first notable involvement came after 55 minutes as he won the ball in midfield before driving towards goal, although his effort was sliced wide and never going to threaten Bettinelli.

The former Tottenham striker thought he had opened his Sunderland account six minutes later as he connected with a half-volley from close range, only for Bettinelli to push it onto the post.

Rodwell was then given his marching orders as he blocked Bettinelli's attempt to set Fulham on a counterattack to earn a second yellow card, his first coming after a high tackle in the opening 45 minutes.

McCormack's introduction gave Kit Symons' side a new dimension going forward, but it was Rodallega who went closest to winning the match as his late header thudded against the post, leaving Sunderland grateful to earn a replay.

Tottenham 1-2 Leicester City: Last-gasp Schlupp stuns Spurs

    761592_heroa.jpg

Leicester City shocked Tottenham with a dramatic late turnaround to book their spot in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

Late drama ensued at White Hart Lane as goals from Leonardo Ulloa and Jeffrey Schlupp enabled Leicester City to come from behind and beat Tottenham 2-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.Andros Townsend's first-half penalty appeared set to send Spurs through to round five on Saturday. However, Ulloa levelled in the 83rd minute with an emphatic finish, before Schlupp's volley squirmed under stand-in goalkeeper Michel Vorm in second-half injury time.

England international Townsend was afforded his opportunity from the spot when Liam Moore brought Roberto Soldado tumbling in the penalty area, while the visitors felt they should have had a first-half penalty of their own when Andrej Kramaric went to ground under a challenge from Vorm.

Spurs subsequently spurned chances through Erik Lamela and Paulinho, before being punished as Leicester turned things around in the closing stages.Tottenham enjoyed the majority of possession in the early stages, but it was Leicester who engineered the first clear-cut opening.

Jeffrey Schlupp's centre from the left picked out Kramaric - making his first start for the club – and the Croatian was denied by a superb point-blank save from Vorm.

Vorm was called into action again when the lively Schlupp burst through the Spurs defence and hit a right-footed shot from the edge of the box that forced the goalkeeper to parry over the crossbar. Those missed opportunities proved costly for Leicester in the 19th minute when Moore was penalised for clumsily felling Soldado in the penalty area.

Townsend slotted the resulting penalty to the right of Leicester debutant Mark Schwarzer - who at the age of 42 became the club's oldest player - and Moore's afternoon worsened when he limped off with an ankle injury.

Tottenham turned the screw in search of a second, but there was a moment of controversy shortly before the break when Leicester were denied a penalty.

Kramaric broke free and went to ground under a challenge from Vorm, only to be booked for simulation by referee Robert Madley.Tottenham threatened first after the restart as Lamela - back in the side after a calf complaint - fired just over from 20 yards in the 53rd minute.

Paulinho could also have made things more comfortable for the hosts when he shot wide after Lamela's clever cut-back from the byline.Lamela was proving a constant threat in the second half and the Argentine forward brought the best out of Schwarzer with a bending left-footed shot.

Spurs' profligacy was punished in the 83rd minute when they failed to clear their lines at a corner and Ulloa controlled from Schlupp's ball back into the area before sweeping his shot past a helpless Vorm.

There was still another twist to come, though, as Danny Simpson's excellent cross was side-footed home by Schlupp in stoppage time - much to the delight of the travelling faithful.
