Barcelona announce Gerardo Martino will be presented as new manager on Friday

Barcelona have announced that new coach Gerardo Martino will be officially unveiled at the club on Friday.

The 50-year-old Argentinian was confirmed as the new Barca boss yesterday, succeeding Tito Vilanova, who stepped down from the role on Friday after one season in charge as he continues his battle with cancer.

Martino is due to fly into Barcelona tomorrow afternoon and will pose for the traditional photo outside the club's offices at 1830 local time, the Catalan club have announced in a statement.

He will sign a two-year contract with the Primera Division champions on Friday morning before holding his first official press conference as club coach at 1300 local time.

Like Barca superstar Lionel Messi, Martino is a native of Rosario, and he spent 14 years of his playing career with local club Newell's Old Boys, the club Messi played for as a junior before moving to Barcelona aged 13.

Martino also led Newell's to the Argentinian Clausura title last season as coach before stepping down from the post, and last night he held a farewell press conference in Rosario, in which he declared his belief that Messi and his father Jorge played a key role in Barcelona appointing him as Vilanova's successor.

He said: "I have no doubts that Messi spoke with the club directors. I'm sure that Jorge and Leo have had some weight in this decision." MEYA THE INDEPENDENT WEB adawiyen uputagath bawa salakanna!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cool:

    Sevilla sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Gameiro

    214656_heroa.jpg

Sevilla have agreed a €10.2 million fee with Paris Saint-Germain to complete the signing of Kevin Gameiro.

The 26-year-old arrives on a five-year deal and in search of first-team football after the arrival of Edinson Cavani put the striker further down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes.

Sevilla announced the signing in a statement on their official website.

“Kevin Gameiro, the French striker, has become the newest member of Sevilla after passing a medical examination and signing his new contract, which will link him to los Nervionenses for the next five seasons.

“The striker, who will have a buyout clause of €40m, landed in Seville on Tuesday from Sweden, where he had been based with his former club Paris Saint-Germain.

“Gameiro will be presented this [Thursday] evening at 8:30pm Spanish time at the Sanchez Pizjuan, where fans can see him for the first time with the Sevilla shirt.”

The France international has the difficult task of replacing Alvaro Negredo, who left for Manchester City in a €28m deal this summer, having scored 31 goals for Sevilla last season.

Gameiro scored eight goals in 2012-13 for PSG, making 25 Ligue 1 appearances but starting just seven of those games behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Jeremy Menez.

    Schweinsteiger targets No.6 role

    283587_heroa.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger has told new Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola he wants to play in the No.6 position this season.

The Germany international has impressed as a more withdrawn midfielder in recent years, but has also featured as attacking midfielder and winger.

However, he has now stressed the position just in front of his own defence is his preferred option.

"Playing in the No.6 position would fit my abilities best in my opinion," Schweinsteiger was quoted as saying by Kicker.

"I do know that I can also play in a more offensive role. I didn't always play in the same position last year either.

"I am used to being rather flexible, but I feel that the position in front of the defence suits me best."

Schweinsteiger has developed into one of Bayern's undisputed star players ever since former head coach Louis van Gaal moved him from the left wing to central midfield.

No new bids for Baines and Fellaini, claims Martinez

    286292_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has declared that there have been no new bids for star men Leighton Baines or Marouane Fellaini.

Arsenal activated the Belgian's release clause in June but have not agreed personal terms, while the left-back has reportedly been the subject of an offer from Manchester United, now managed by former Toffees boss David Moyes.

Asked by reporters if there were new approaches, Martinez replied: "Not at all, and I know that obviously that's not something that you want to hear.

"But, clearly, what has been in the last two or three weeks is everyone focused to try to fight for that starting spot at the beginning of the season. The competitive level in this group is quite impressive.

"And I wouldn't want to stop the speculation, I do think that the speculation is healthy. The speculation of trying to be as good as we can before the window closes in our football club will always be the case.

"If we get clubs talking about our players, I'll take that as a compliment because, our players, they've been impressing and they've been doing very very well but we're in a great position financially, we're really really strong and what we want is to start the season with the best possible squad that we have and for that we have to work extremely hard.

"The last concern that I have is what the other teams do and what I've been really impressed [with] is the togetherness of this group and the professionalism of this group is something that you get straight away.

"And I said it before when I arrived at Goodison. I saw the passion of the fans and the feeling of the football club and believe me I can see that through the players in every training session and it pleases me. It makes me proud.

Questioned on whether he could keep his squad together, the Spaniard answered: "That's something that you should never ask to a manager because unfortunately the modern game doesn't allow managers to do that in terms of having that control.

"What I'm very, very excited [about] is that the squad is very, very strong. There are always good youngsters, the club is producing youngsters that I feel are going to come to the first team and give a real good hand to the players that we've got there."

Chelsea to use Lampard sparingly, says Mourinho

    280961_heroa.jpg

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says that he will look to use Frank Lampard sparingly over the coming season.

The veteran signed a new 12-month contract last season, following a campaign in which he broke Bobby Tambling's goalscoring record for the Premier League club, but the Portuguese believes that a pragmatic approach is best to maximise the Blues hero's impact in 2013-14.

"With Frank, the role doesn't have to change," Mourinho told reporters. "What has to change is the way we analyse every competition.

"With Frank, before, we didn't have to analyse - it was simple: every match, he plays. I believe he is the same player but there is a difference. He is 35 and the time needed to recover from match to match is not the same for a man of 25 as a man of 35. That's the only point.

"[Lampard] knows what I did, for example, with [Claude] Makelele here in the last two years of his spell at the club," the former Real Madrid coach continued.

"He knows I know how to do it with players of his age because, at the end of the day, we have to be just clever, because the player is the same.

"I like players without looking at their birth certificates. Performance determines how good you are, not your identity card or birth certificate. It's about performance, nothing else."

Lampard made 29 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring 15 times to move him to 203 goals for the club.

    Borussia Dortmund cancel Gotze farewell

    295277_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have decided to cancel the scheduled farewell ceremony for Mario Gotze ahead of this weekend's German Supercup match against Bayern Munich, in order to prevent any supporter protests.

The Germany international angered BVB fans when announcing his decision to leave Dortmund for Bayern in a deal worth €37 million earlier this year, but Dortmund were nonetheless keen to give the 21-year-old an official goodbye and thank him for his contribution to the club's recent successes.

However, they have now opted against their initial plan to bid Gotze farewell on Saturday after talks with the attacking midfielder's agent Volker Struth, in an effort to placate fans who remain bitter over his switch to the Allianz Arena.

Gotze has been receiving abuse via social media ever since announcing his transfer to Bayern and it has therefore been decided that he will remain in Munich this weekend to work on his recovery from injury rather than travel to Dortmund for the match at Signal Iduna Park.

The creative midfielder has been sidelined with a muscular problem ever since the second leg of Dortmund's Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, but is expected to resume squad training in the next 10 days.
