Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand backs current squad

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes the current squad is good enough to retain the title without further signings.United have failed with two bids to sign former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and also lost out on Thiago Alcantara, who chose to join European champions Bayern Munich.

That leaves full-back Guillermo Varela - signed from Atletico Penarol - as the sole arrival of the David Moyes era, although January signing Wilfried Zaha is now at Old Trafford having returned to Crystal Palace on loan last season.But Ferdinand is bullish about the champions' prospects for the new campaign regardless of what happens between now and the transfer window closing.

He said: "We're confident. If we had to go into the season with the players that we've got now I'd be more than confident and with high hopes of doing well and winning trophies."If the manager adds to that and chooses to add to that, then great - but it remains to be seen."

Moyes himself appears similarly enthused by the options at his disposal.
He reflected on the tour of Asia: "I'm taking away a great experience of my first trip with Manchester United in general and what the football club means around the world."But I've also had a chance to get to know the players, try and settle into my new environment and the players to get to know me as well.

"They've been working with a great manager for a long time, a lot of them, so it's going to take time. But I've enjoyed working with them, they're incredibly professional and I can see why they're champions. The way they conduct themselves and go about their business and I've been very impressed by them."

Former Birmingham striker Christian Benitez dies aged 27

Former Birmingham striker Christian Benitez has passed away in Qatar aged only 27.The Ecuador international suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after being admitted to hospital with stomach pains following his debut for Qatari club Al Jaish.Benitez, who was rumoured to be a summer transfer target for Tottenham, signed a three-year contract with Al Jaish earlier this month after leaving Mexican side Club America in a deal worth around £10m.

An Ecuador Football Federation statement read: "The FEF regrets to inform you of the death of Christian Benitez, the striker of Qatar club Al Jaish and the Ecuador national team."Benitez, who was with his new club in Qatar, had a severe stomach pain, which was why he was rushed to a hospital, where after a few hours suffered he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, which ended his life.

"The Ecuadorian Football Federation extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family - parents, wife, children - and friends of our striker Christian Benitez. May he rest in peace."An earlier statement released by Al Jaish said: "The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to the family of the player.

"The player participated for the first time with the team during Sunday's match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup without complaining of any health problems."His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character."

Benitez, popularly known as Chucho, joined Birmingham on loan from Santos Laguna in 2009 and scored four goals in 36 appearances."Birmingham City Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former striker Christian 'Chucho' Benitez," read a statement on the Championship club's website.

"The thoughts of all associated with the football club are with Chucho's family and friends at this very sad time. Chucho's passing will now be marked at St Andrew's ahead of Saturday's fixture against Watford."The Ecuador international was an immensely-popular character during his time at the football club."

Alex McLeish, Birmingham's manager when Benitez was there, told Sky Sports News: "He was a very likeable guy and dangerous in the box."He only scored thee goals and people thought we let him go because of that. I would've kept him but he went because we were trying to bring in some top players.

"That didn't materialise and I was left cursing the fact we could've kept him for that season because I'm sure he'd have flourished in England."Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner, who played with Benitez at Birmingham, was one of the first to pay tribute on his Twitter account.He wrote: "Can't believe Christian Benitez aka chucho has died had the pleasure to play with him he was a top bloke. My thoughts go out to his family."

Benitez scored 52 goals in 79 appearances over the last two seasons, and he was also a regular for the Ecuador national team, earning 58 caps and scoring 24 goals and featuring against Germany in the 2006 World Cup.

Manchester United are set to turn their attentions to Marouane Fellaini as their hopes of luring Cesc Fabregas away from Barcelona continue to fade.

The Premier League champions are considering a move to trigger the Everton star's €25.5 million release clause, with Fabregas continuing to look likely to remain a Camp Nou player ahead of talks with coach Gerardo Martino.

Fellaini, who was seen dining at Rio Ferdinand's Rosso restaurant in Manchester over the weekend, will see his release clause increase on August 1 and, as such, United are quickly readying an offer.

Sources close to the club have also indicated that new boss David Moyes is considering a move for Fellaini's team-mate Leighton Baines in what would be a double raid on his former employers. The left-back, who was targeted by Sir Alex Ferguson last summer, is understood to be available for between €17.5m and €23.3m.

The Belgian currently earns €87,000-a-week at Goodison Park and Old Trafford officials are willing to sanction a salary package upwards of that if they submit a bid for his signature.

Moyes, who brought the former Standard Liege star to the Premier League in 2008, is keen to bolster his central-midfield options, with Paul Scholes having retired and Darren Fletcher's ongoing recovery from illness.

United are understood to be losing heart in their pursuit of Fabregas, who emerged as the the club's top summer target after they missed out on Thiago Alcantara, who joined Bayern Munich earlier in July.

Barcelona officials have long insisted that the former Arsenal captain is not for sale this summer, despite repeated and public enquiries from United.

Fellaini is seen as a cheaper alternative in central midfield, and hinted that he would be open to following his former boss to the Premier League champions in May.

"I only want to go to a club where the manager ­really wants me," said the 25-year-old. "In 2008, Everton did everything to convince me, especially David Moyes. He made me the player I am now."

The Toffees star has impressed United in recent years, scoring twice in his last three games against the Old Trafford side.

Gareth Bale wants Real Madrid talks as Spanish club warn it's now or never for world

Gareth Bale has told Spurs he wants to talk to Real Madrid about a world record transfer.

The Spanish giants are warning he is being offered a once-in-a-lifetime ­opportunity – and they want the deal done quickly or they will look elsewhere.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is hoping to set up a summit with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy in Miami in the first week of August when Madrid are visiting the city on their pre-season tour.

Bale is to be offered a new contract to stay at White Hart Lane , but will refuse to sign it although he will not be asking for a transfer.

He enjoys working with boss Andre Villas-Boas, but appreciates a chance like this may not come round again.

Real Madrid are ready to smash the world transfer record - set four years ago when they signed Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for £80m - to land Bale.

Levy is understood to be adamant that Bale is not for sale and has assured Spurs boss Villas-Boas the club will resist any offer.

But Real Madrid are ready to come back with a new bid after being told the £51m in cash plus Angel Di Maria and Fabio Coentraou - worth £95 million - is of no interest to Spurs.



Tottenham have a new stadium to build but are also acutely aware that selling Bale is a bad sign to potential signings.

They are closing in on Valencia’s Roberto Soldado but that deal was still not concluded last night and the Spaniard must be wondering about Bale’s future.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s players are hoping Bale comes with Alvaro Arbeloa saying: “I have played against Bale and no-one can doubt his quality.

“This type of player always interests a top club like Real Madrid because our challenge is to win titles.”

PSG said no to Verratti release clause, claims agent

Paris Saint-Germain refused to allow Marco Verratti a release clause in his new contract, according to the player's agent.

The 20-year-old agreed a new deal with the Ligue 1 champions at the end of last week, drawing to an end weeks of speculation linking the midfielder with a move to the likes of Napoli.

Donato Di Campli has now revealed that PSG would not allow a new buyout clause to be inserted into the Italy starlet's new terms, and confirmed that the Partenopei had indeed made an enquiry over the player's availability.

"We asked for a release clause, but PSG said no," he told Radio Toscana.

"Napoli had enquired, but I never talked about a 'monstrous' offer. The renewal was then a logical consequence of the French club not wanting to sell him, putting him at the centre of their project."

Verratti joined the Parc des Princes outfit from Pescara last summer, making a total of 39 appearances during his maiden season.

Benitez wants another striker at Napoli

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has revealed he is looking to sign another striker during the summer transfer window.

The Partenopei have already moved quickly to bolster their attacking options following the €64 million sale of Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain, with Dries Mertens, Jose Callejon and Gonzalo Higuain all moving to San Paolo for a combined fee of more than €56 million.

Napoli have also been linked with a move for Porto striker Jackson Martinez, and Benitez has is keen to add another name to his strikeforce in order for his side to challenge both domestically and in the Champions League.

"I want a striker at Higuain's level to be competitive in the league and the Champions League. Last year, Napoli had 14 alternatives. Three are gone, so there is a need for more reinforcements," he was quoted as saying by Repubblica.

Napoli beat Galatasaray 3-1 in a friendly on Monday and Benitez was pleased with his side's display in difficult weather conditions.

"It was not easy to play in this heat, but we were the protagonists. Of course, we can and definitely will improve," he added.

Marotta rules out Isla exit

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta as insisted that his side will be hanging on to Mauricio Isla.

The Chilean has endured a difficult start to life in Turin, making just a handful of appearances for the Bianconeri last term following his move from Udinese a year ago.

He has since been linked with a move to Inter this summer, but Marotta says he wants to stay at the club.

"Isla is our player,” the official told Sky Sport Italia. "I’m not denying Inter’s approach for him, but, with no substitute, he will remain ours.

"He’s told us that he would like to stay and, with boss Antonio Conte’s blessing, he is a Juventus player."

Marotta went on to say that Napoli defender Juan Zuniga, who has been liked with a move to Turin, will not be sold by his current employers this summer.

"We have a good relationship with Napoli and we accept that they will not be selling him," he added.

Finally, the 56-year-old said that his side are unlikely to make any more signings this summer, with their main priority offloading unwanted players.

"I don’t think we’ll sign anyone else. We’ve added to sections of the team that needed it such as the attack and defence," he added.

"We brought in a lot of players at the start of the summer, we have built a competitive team. In these tough economic times for Italian football, we have invested well.

"We have an attack that needs reducing because six players of that level are a lot. We want five, perhaps with a youngster to develop.

"The hope is that we find a positive solution for us. The requests will need analysing, but the desire of the player is more fundamental than that of the club."

Rooney to push again for Manchester United exit in Moyes showdown talks

David Moyes will this week come face to face with Wayne Rooney for the first time in nearly a month as the pair prepare for crunch talks over the forward’s Manchester United future.

Rooney, who has been in rehabilitation at the club’s Carrington training base following a hamstring injury sustained two days into United’s pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, has agreed in principle to join Chelsea for £200,000-a-week. Moyes, however, insists that the 27-year-old is not for sale under any circumstances and the Premier League champions have dismissed an offer of £20 million from the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Now, the pair will sit down for talks this week. Moyes is set to reiterate that he wants the England star to remain a United player, while Rooney remains intent on leaving.

They must also assess and decide whether the striker can travel with the squad ahead of the club’s next pre-season friendly in Stockholm on August 6. Despite the propaganda frenzy, it is not yet certain whether Rooney can or will travel.

Despite reports to the contrary, though, the pair's relationship is cordial. They may not have met in person since July 11 due to the club’s exhaustive tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, but they have spoken over telephone, in conversations that were described as “amicable” by club sources. Moyes took the opportunity to clarify quotes to the press in which he described the striker as a “back-up” to Robin van Persie, insisting to Rooney that those quotes were taken out of context and that he remains a key member of his squad.

Yet Rooney, despite appreciating his manager’s gesture of goodwill after having made it known that Moyes had left him “angry and confused”, has maintained that he wants to leave following a season in which his relationship broke down with Sir Alex Ferguson and the United hierarchy.

Moyes, meanwhile, has been on the charm offensive. He has peppered the “brilliant, outstanding, exceptional” Rooney with compliments to the press throughout the club's pre-season tour.

It is rank politicking. While Rooney has trained and recovered largely alone over the past three weeks, friendly but distant with Carrington staff, Moyes and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward have privately discussed his exit from the club.

Some at Carrington believe his best days are gone for good. The club simply do not want to offer him a long-term contract.

However, despite an intense and rather ugly spout of media briefings from United, Chelsea and Rooney’s camp a fortnight ago, the latest line from Manchester and west London is the same. No news. No bids. Deadlock as it stands, with a saga running until the very last throes of the transfer window appearing ever more likely.

A complicated and drawn out game is developing. Chelsea know they must pay more than their most recent offer of £20m and are willing to do so to facilitate a move, but have been left waiting on United and Rooney’s camp themselves. The forward asked England colleagues Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole about Mourinho, while admitting to friends that he will have to submit a transfer request to secure a move. He, like Chelsea, is open to the idea but has been told to stay patient by agent Paul Stretford, who remains wary of his client’s public reputation – already sullied in the eyes of many United fans.

Moyes knows that Rooney cannot be sold without at least one major transfer arriving at Old Trafford beforehand. Having missed out on Thiago Alcantara and with their pursuit of Cesc Fabregas growing increasingly futile, United’s great hopes this summer, publicly paraded, risk proving both unsuccessful and even embarrassing. The former Everton boss is keen on bringing both Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines to United, but such is the new regime’s desire to make a statement of intent that the big, Hollywood names continue to be linked. Moyes’ admission that the Fabregas chase could soon be over was used to temper the fans’ great expectations.

And yet despite the stalled rhetoric and glacially-paced game of tit-for-tat, one man perseveres in driving a potential move: Jose Mourinho.

The new Chelsea boss has made clear to the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, including owner Roman Abramovich, that Rooney is his number-one target this summer. Behind the scenes, the self-proclaimed Special One is pulling out all the stops to bring the forward to west London.

Mourinho feels that Rooney’s pace and power would enable him to fit neatly into the sit-and-sting 4-2-3-1 approach that brought him so much success in seasons past. Flanked by the likes of Oscar and Eden Hazard; the United man would be the focal point of the Portuguese’s new Chelsea side.

The financial and political significance of Rooney at Old Trafford in an unprecedented summer of transition for the Premier League has created a perfect storm from which all parties could benefit; Rooney wants out, United are open to selling and Chelsea will pay the asking price. But it is a storm that all parties are looking to weather their own way. Moyes and the forward’s meeting this week is the next step in the process. Mourinho will sit, wait and see if either man blinks.

The multi-million pound game of chess is well under way.

Lewandowski: I will give everything for Dortmund

Robert Lewandowski has vowed to "give everything" for Borussia Dortmund this season despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The Poland international has long been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, although BVB's determination to hold on to their star striker means he is likely to see out his contract with the club, which expires next summer.

Lewandowski recently admitted his public desire to leave Signal Iduna Park had caused "trouble" amongst some of his team-mates but, after featuring in Dortmund's 4-2 DFL-Supercup win over Bayern on Saturday, he has assured supporters his sole focus will be on performing well when he wears the Schwarzgelben shirt.

"I will give everything for Dortmund, no matter what. When I stand on the pitch and play, I think of BVB. I will do my best and be successful," he was quoted as saying by Bild.

Liverpool should offload Suarez as soon as possible, warns Barnes

Former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes says the club should aim to sell Luis Suarez as soon as possible.

Goal revealed that the striker is preparing to hand in a formal transfer request in order to secure a move to Arsenal, who submitted an improved £42 million bid for the Uruguay international last week.

Barnes has urged the club to sort out the striker's future quickly because he fears they will have no time to find and secure an adequate replacement should he leave.

"We’ve seen in the past when transfers go down to the last minute that it doesn’t help anybody, especially for a club like Liverpool who, if they lose Suarez, would have to find a big-name replacement," he told talkSPORT.

"I’d like it to be done sooner rather than later because if it goes down to the last day, and you then have to go and get somebody, it’s not ideal.

"As far as Suarez is concerned, if he’s not going to be happy, then he has to go.

"We can all say, ‘yes, we think Suarez is going to be a player like Carlos Tevez, who gives 100 per cent no matter what’ but we don’t know what his mental state is going to be if he doesn’t get his wish [to leave the club]."

Smalling backs Januzaj and Lingard to shine at Manchester United

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling believes Adnan Januzaj and Jesse Lingard can force their way into the Premier League champions' first team this season.

The Belgian and English youngsters have shone in the Red Devils' pre-season fixtures with the pair both scoring in David Moyes' side's 5-2 win over Kitchee SC on Monday.

Now Smalling, who has established himself in the setup at Old Trafford since moving from Fulham for £7 million in 2010, has backed the duo to push for a place in Moyes' team ahead of the new campaign.

"They have taken their chance,” he told the club's official website.

"It’s good that the manager has given these young players a chance and they have really taken their chances.

"I think all of them have made a claim for the start of the season and they are all in with a good shout."

Januzaj, who has impressed on United's pre-season tour of Asia and capped his fine displays with a goal in Hong Kong, is pleased with his performances but is aiming to continue to improve.

"I have done some good stuff [during the tour] and I hope to keep going," the Belgian added.

"That is what I am going to do. I am going to work hard and try to keep doing what I am doing."

United have one more friendly on their tour before heading back to England, which will see them face AIK in Stockholm on August 6.

Casillas: We must be grateful to Mourinho

Iker Casillas insists he is grateful to former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho for his contribution to the success of the club.

Mourinho won three trophies during his three-year stint at Santiago Bernabeu, although the latter part of his tenure is best remembered for a public fall-out with Casillas which led to the club captain being frozen out of the first team.

Casillas, however, has stressed that the current Chelsea boss' efforts in La Liga cannot be ignored, although he is relishing the prospect of beginning a new campaign under replacement coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"I've only been training with Carlo, I don't know what differences there are [between Ancelotti and Mourinho], but it's not a question of looking back. You have to be grateful for Mourinho's contribution to Real Madrid, but now we have to start with the hope that the club can be at the top," he told a press conference.

"He's a winner, that's obvious to everyone, but he'll make it clear from the beginning. This club was on the edge of titles last season; we want to complete our objectives in all three competitions."

Madrid have been heavily linked with a renewed push for Tottenham star Gareth Bale in the coming weeks, with Spurs determined to hold on to their star man despite his desire to leave, and Casillas is not surprised to see los Blancos once again chasing one of Europe's finest.

"We're talking about a player who, frankly, is one of the best three or four players in Europe, and it's normal to talk about him," the 32-year-old said.

"We're talking about a decisive player. The market is still open and I'm sure someone will arrive here before the beginning of the Liga season."

Finally, Casillas says competition for places at the club is good under Ancelotti - but admitted he was desperate to regain his No.1 spot next season.

"Competition is always healthy. There are very good goalkeepers here and we must learn to live with that. I hear a lot about competition for my post, but in other parts of the pitch there are two or three players for one position as well," he added.

"I would love to be No.1 keeper. I work for it. But if you ask the others, they're going to say the same. You have to compete to play in the XI of Ancelotti. I will have to fight as I always have."

Marotta slams Juventus fixture pile-up


Giuseppe Marotta has hit out at Serie A organisers after Juventus were handed a tough run of fixtures at the start of the 2013-14 season.

The champions begin the defence of their Scudetto crown with a visit to Sampdoria - the only side to beat them twice last season in Serie A - while a gruelling run of fixtures from the end of September sees them face a derby clash with Torino, AC Milan and Fiorentina, as well as two Champions League group games.

Marotta feels Italian sides competing on the continent should be handed better protection from Serie A organisers, telling Tuttosport: "Certainly the calendar has been less yielding in the last few years.

"There are many cup matches close to important games in the season, or head-to-head matches which are traditionally tricky.

"The league should better protect those who represent Italy in Europe. I realise this is difficult, perhaps impossible in some cases, but it would benefit everyone."

Despite their ominous-looking start to the campaign, Marotta is fully confident his side have what it takes to secure a third successive Serie A title.

He added: "The beginning is tough and we should be aggressive in those games, but this is one of our characteristics. We do not lack the will to win the championship for the third time in a row."
