Malaysia 1-3 Barcelona: Fabregas inspires Spanish champions to Asia Tour victory

    304245hp2.jpg

Barcelona made it two wins out of two on their Asia Tour as they overcame a spirited Malaysia XI 3-1 in Shah Alam.

Cesc Fabregas, who put an end to speculation about his future this week, was the inspiration behind los Cules' display and he opened the scoring.

Malaysia's Mohd Amri Yahyah, though, soon had the hosts on level terms shortly after.

However, the Spaniard, Fabregas turned provider for Neymar and Gerard Pique to wrap up the victory.

With Barcelona's title defence getting underway against Levante in just over a week's time, Gerardo Martino named a strong starting XI for his final pre-season contest, although he was without Lionel Messi and Pedro who had both suffered knocks in the 7-1 win against Thailand.

Despite the Liga champions dominating early proceedings, it was the Asian side who nearly took the lead on 20 minutes when Norshahrul Idlan Talaha capitalised on a mix-up between Pique and Sergio Busquets but the striker watched his neat chip over Victor Valdes strike the foot of the post.

The possession stats weighed heavily in Barca's favour but they found it difficult to break down a well-organised and disciplined Malaysian defence.

Neymar and Andres Iniesta both went close with curling individual efforts, before Fabregas, occupying the false no.9 role, gave Barcelona the lead.

Jordi Alba collected Neymar's pass in his stride and his lofted cross was headed weakly across goal by Fabregas for goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi to fumble into the bottom corner.

Barcelona's lead lasted only eight minutes, however, as Alba failed to deal with a long diagonal pass from the left, allowing Mohd Amri Yahyah to emphatically thump the rebound past Valdes from the edge of the box.

Neymar has enjoyed a promising start to his Blaugrana career and he restored the lead two minutes before the break with a wonderful display of technique and composure.

The Brazilian collected Fabregas' pass with his back to goal, before effortlessly rolling his marker and coolly slotting past Fahmi.

Substitute Cristian Tello looked to celebrate his first international call-up with a goal but after being picked out by Fabregas' superb reverse pass, but the Spanish winger could only fire narrowly wide under pressure.

However, it was another of Barcelona's Spanish contingent who wrapped up the scoring on 75 minutes.

Fabregas was the architect once again as he chipped a precise ball through for Pique, who showed all the qualities of a striker by controlling expertly and firing high past substitute goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Marlias.

Norwich City 2-0 Panathinaikos: Hooper injury scare mars Canaries win

    304323_heroa.jpg

Two goals from Bradley Johnson gave Norwich City a 2-0 pre-season win over Panathinaikos, but an injury to Gary Hooper marred an otherwise fine day.
The Premier League club went ahead after only three minutes when midfielder Johnson headed home a Robert Snodgrass free kick.

And shortly after the re-start the 26-year-old was at it again - this time powering home a header from Javier Garrido's pinpoint cross. However, despite the win, there was real concern for City boss Chris Hughton after the game, with new signing Hooper carried off on a stretcher early in the second half with a shin injury.

The close-season arrival from Celtic went down after rolling defender Gordon Schildenfeld in a challenge and was subsequently taken to hospital for precautionary X-Rays.That incident aside, the visiting Greek team played their part in an open contest, with Anastasios Lagos narrowly shooting wide of John Ruddy’s far post on the quarter-hour mark as they searched for an equaliser.

They went even closer when Schildenfeld's effort was blocked on the line and then a follow up header rebounded on to the crossbar.Prior to his departure, Hooper had looked lively, and he went close to scoring when he was picked out in the box, but the striker slipped over at the crucial moment and the visitors cleared.

Norwich wrapped up the win after 58 minutes when Johnson headed home his second, while substitute Nathan Redmond could have added gloss to the scoreline late on with a stinging low drive that goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino parried wide.

Stoke City 0-0 Genoa: Profligate Potters held by gritty Grifone

    304298_heroa.jpg

Stoke City missed a host of chances as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Genoa at the Brittania Stadium on Saturday.Peter Crouch struck the post and Jonathan Walters missing a gilt-edged chance from six yards in the first half for Mark Hughes' men.

Wilson Palacios featured in the Stoke midfield and Asmir Begovic was selected ahead of Jack Butland in goal, while Genoa named Italy international Alberto Gilardino in their starting XI.Stoke were patient in their build-up play in the early stages and were almost rewarded in the 10th minute when Walters' cross from the right-hand side was met by the head of Crouch but the 32-year-old saw his effort come back off the post. The home side continued to search for the opener and Charlie Adam shot wide from the edge of the area before Walters should have broken the deadlock.

Crouch knocked a header back across goal into the path of the Republic of Ireland international but he somehow failed to beat Mattia Perin from six yards out.
Hughes introduced several players into the action at half-time, with Glenn Whelan, Cameron Jerome and Jermaine Pennant all entering the fray. The changes hindered the hosts' momentum slightly as just 30 seconds after the restart Andrea Bertolacci forced Begovic into a fingertip save. However, Stoke were seldom threatened and Jerome's speculative volley with 20 minutes remaining almost won it for them.

Hughes' side begin their Premier League season with an away trip to face Liverpool on August 17, while Genoa kick off their Serie A campaign against Inter eight days later.

Newcastle United 1-1 Braga: Coloccini rescues draw for Magpies

    239977hp2.jpg

A Fabricio Coloccini header gained Newcastle United a 1-1 draw in their final pre-season friendly versus Braga at St James' Park on Saturday. An Alan penalty on the stroke of half-time gave the Portuguese side the lead at the break but the Newcastle captain headed home from a corner on the hour mark to level things up for Alan Pardew's men.Prior to the game, captains of both teams paid their respect to former Newcastle manager Bobby Robson, in honour of National Sir Bobby Robson Day, while latest signing Loic Remy was unveiled to fans.

The first chance of the game arrived after 19 minutes when Papiss Cisse attempted to curl an effort past Eduardo, but the goalkeeper was equal to it. Shola Ameobi and Jonas Gutierrez threatened for the hosts with good link-up play that ultimately came to nothing, before Braga took the lead from the spot.

Mathieu Debuchy brought down the tricky Felipe Pardo in the box, with captain Alan slotting the penalty past Rob Elliot in the hosts' goal. Newcastle began the second half well, with Hatem Ben Arfa in particular looking dangerous, and it was the Frenchman who delivered the decisive corner.

The former Marseille winger crossed the ball in for Coloccini to score Newcastle's first goal from a corner since October 2011. The home side could have gone ahead three minutes later but Braga somehow cleared their lines after a goal-mouth scramble. Substitute Yoan Gouffran had the ball in the net five minutes from time, again from a corner, only for it to be disallowed.

Next up for Pardew's side is a trip to the Etihad Stadium on August 19 for their Premier League opener against Manchester City.

Rodgers: Suarez must apologise to team-mates

    299590_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers has told Luis Suarez that he must apologise to his team-mates before being allowed back into the first team at Liverpool. The Uruguayan was not involved in Liverpool's 1-0 pre-season defeat to Celtic on Saturday and the Ulsterman says that the striker had a lot of work to do to earn back his place after declaring he wanted an "amicable agrrement" over an Anfield exit.

After two bids from Premier League rivals Arsenal were rejected, Rodgers and chairman John W Henry have remained consistent in their approach that Suarez is not for sale - and the manager says he will only welcome back the player into the first team when he showed his commitment to the club."Initially, there will be an apology to his team-mates and the club," Rodgers explained to reporters. "Then, a recognition that he is ready to fight for the club."I know that we are not seeing the Luis Suarez I know. He has spent some days working on his own. When he comes back from Uruguay we will see how it goes further.

"We are all on the same page. He won't be going to Arsenal, that's for sure. When Luis is committed to the cause, we will welcome him back with open arms."I was made aware at the end of last season that a number of clubs would come in. The reality is that one (club has) done."Suarez was Liverpool's top scorer in all competitions last season, including 23 goals in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher revealed on Saturday that he believes Suarez is too good for both Rodgers' side and Arsenal, expressing surprise at the forward's determination to push through a move to the Emirates.

Mazzarri: Final scoreline unfair on Inter

    300100_heroa.jpg

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri felt Saturday's 3-0 loss to Real Madrid was a far more even contest than the final scoreline suggested.

The Nerazzurri were undone by goals from Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro but enjoyed a second-half resurgence in which Mauro Icardi hit the woodwork and forced a goal-line clearance.

Consequently, a defiant Mazzarri was quick to talk up his troops for constantly causing their Spanish counterparts difficulty, arguing that their performance should actually serve to boost their confidence ahead of the new Serie A season.

"Anyone who didn't watch the game might see the 3-0 scoreline and think Real Madrid completely dominated but that's not what happened," the 51-year-old told reporters after the game.

"[Ricky] Alvarez, [Rodrigo] Palacio and Icardi had lots of chances to score and it's incredible that not even one of them went in. If we'd lost 3-2 to Real Madrid, it wouldn't have been so bad.

"Inter fashioned six or seven great chances in front of their keeper. Obviously our finishing could have been better but I'm very happy with the way my team played.

"The players are starting to get to grips with certain movements and are solid. If you assess the game based on what happened on the pitch and not the result, you cannot but be happy."

Midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic reiterated his coach's thoughts: "It's hard to wax lyrical after losing 3-0 but we had our own chances. We're on the right track.

"You need to play tests like this against top opposition to help you grow."

Icardi, meanwhile, could not help but wonder about the one that got away.

"It's a shame I hit the bar with that effort," he lamented, "as it was a great ball. We created things and caused problems for them but we weren't able to stick our chances away.

"On a personal level I feel good but I have to work very hard and that's what I'll keep doing."

The San Siro outfit have endured a torrid pre-season, winning only one out of five friendly encounters despite signing the likes of Ishak Belfodil and Hugo Campagnaro.

Mazzarri will now be keen to get his side prepared for their Serie A opener against Genoa on August 25.

    Villas-Boas bats away Bale questions

    275422_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas refused to be drawn on speculation regarding the future of winger Gareth Bale, with Real Madrid rumoured to be preparing a world-record bid for the Spurs star's services.Speaking his side's 1-1 friendly draw with Espanyol on Saturday, the Portuguese boss reiterated the club's stance that the player's absence is down to an injury, with Bale finally back in training after missing most of pre-season so far.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a €114 million move to Los Blancos throughout the transfer window, but Villas-Boas insisted that he would not comment on "invented" stories by the media."The only thing I can say about the stories is I am not going to comment because everybody has speculated a lot," the former Porto boss told reporters.

"There are some different stories, some which are not true, with people inventing without knowledge of what is going on."The only thing I can tell you is the player is under the treatment of the medical department for this pain in the foot which is disturbing him.

"He has been called up for his national team (a friendly match with the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday), our medical department is going to be in contact with the Wales medical department to make sure they have everything available in terms of giving information on how the player has been doing in these last weeks."Regarding the speculation, I don't want to extend myself further than I have told you."

Bale won both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year awards last season as Tottenham finished fifth, missing out on a Champions League qualifying place to rivals Arsenal to intensify speculation over the winger's futre.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Lazio: Klose shoots down plucky Eagles

    304295_heroa.jpg

An early Miroslav Klosegoal gave Lazio a 1-0 win over Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The veteran German striker tapped home a rebound after Julian Speroni had saved an Antonio Candreva strike in the 12th minute to ensure the Eagles will go into the new season on the back of a defeat. Stephen Dobbie was among the bright sparks for the hosts in what was a quiet start to the match, with the close-season signing forcing two good chances for his side early on. However, the crucial breakthrough came shortly after when 35-year-old Germany international Klose showcased his lethal touch in the box to put the Coppa Italia winners ahead.

Senad Lulic almost made it two after Candreva again forced a good saved from Speroni, but the Bosnian was unable to force the ball home.Palace were denied a penalty before half-time when Dobbie went down in the box, while Jerome Thomas was forced off with an ankle injury. The home side came close to an equaliser after 66 minutes when close-season addition Dwight Gayle played in fellow new recruit Kevin Phillips.

However, last year's play-off final hero shot straight at Federico Marchetti, leaving Palace boss Ian Holloway with questions to answer ahead of their clash with Tottenham on August 18.

    :(:(:(Fabregas injury blow for Spain

    304245_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has revealed that Cesc Fabregas is unlikely to be available for Spain's friendly with Ecuador next week, after picking up an injury in his club's 3-1 win over a Malaysia XI on Saturday.

The midfielder, who has only just expressed his desire to remain at Camp Nou following reports linking him with a move to Manchester United, put on a scintillating display in Selangor, bagging the opener before playing a part in the Blaugrana's two other goals.

However, Fabregas then limped off with an ankle injury in the 83rd minute, with Martino claiming he would be unable to recover in time for international duty next week.

“He’s received a heavy knock to his ankle," the Argentine coach told reporters. "I don’t know if he’ll be able to play for Spain [in Wednesday's friendly against Ecuador]; he’s not doing great right now."

A notable exclusion from the Barcelona line-up at Shah Alam Stadium had been star striker Lionel Messi, but Martino was quick to allay fears over his compatriot's fitness.

"He was a bit sore and we didn’t want to take any risks. It’s nothing serious but we didn’t want to take the chance," he explained.

With the 26-year-old forward injured, Martino was keen to heap praise on Neymar, who responded well to the responsibility of leading the Liga champions' attack with a goal.

"We are very pleased with how Neymar is performing in the games he has played," the former Paraguay trainer enthused.

"He’s fine, but we didn’t want him to play any more than 45 minutes and, even though he felt good, we didn’t change our plans.

"I’m optimistic, I think we’re in good shape to start the league. The tour has been good from a footballing point of view. We’ve had time to train.

"We’ve got fantastic players, so I’m not going to use a lack of time as an excuse."

The Catalans will begin the defence of their Liga title with a home game against Levante.
