Fenerbahce 0-3 Arsenal: Gunners put one foot in the group stages

    308138hp2.jpg

Arsenal ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Wednesday night to put one foot in the group stages of the Champions League.

Second-half goals from Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey and a penalty from Olivier Giroud made sure of the win, with the Gunners now firmly in the driving seat ahead of next week's second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger was forced into one change from the opening day of the Premier League season with injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ruling him out of the trip to Turkey.

Santi Cazorla replaced the England international with Lukas Podolski having to settle for a place on the bench.

Fenerbahce gave starts to new signings Bruno Alves and Michal Kadlec, while another new arrival Emmanuel Emenike was named as a substitute.

Having dominated the opening exchanges, Arsenal tested goalkeeper Volkan Demirel for the first time after 19 minutes.

Cazorla created the first opportunity for Walcott, his through-ball nearly finding the forward, but Demirel slid in well to intercept.

The loose ball fell to Tomas Rosicky and he delivered a perfect cross for Giroud but the striker’s header was just wide of goal.

Fenerbahce were struggling to get into the game and failed to test Wojciech Szczesny in the opening half.

Wenger's early season injury problems continued just after the half hour when Laurent Koscielny was forced off with a head injury.

The French defender clashed with Pierre Webo and had to be replaced by Carl Jenkinson.

The hosts began the second half at a much higher tempo but fell behind six minutes in as Gibbs scored a crucial away goal.

Just after the hour, Arsenal doubled their lead thanks to Ramsey.

He received a pass from Jack Wilshere 35 yards from goal and moved at pace towards the Fenerbahce defence. As he reached the penalty area, Ramsey fired a low shot into the bottom corner, although Demirel should have done better.

The victory was secured with 14 minutes to play as Kadlec brought down Walcott inside the penalty area. Giroud made no mistake from the spot, sending Demirel the wrong way to complete a perfect night for Arsenal.

Chelsea 2-1 Aston Villa: Ivanovic seals Blues win

    308146hp2.jpg

A second-half goal from Branislav Ivanovic ensured Chelsea made it two wins in a week as the Blues saw off Aston Villa 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho had previously gone four Premier League games without registering a victory over Villa, but he finally bucked that trend at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Branislav Ivanovic's thumping header.

Chelsea made a flying start when Antonio Luna inadvertently scored past his own goalkeeper before Christian Benteke levelled proceedings on the stroke of half-time.

And it looked like the home side would be frustrated until Ivanovic met Frank Lampard's free-kick with 17 minutes remaining.

Mourinho made two changes to the Chelsea team that beat Hull City on Sunday, with Juan Mata and Demba Ba replacing Kevin De Bruyne and Fernando Torres, the Spaniard omitted from the squad altogether.

Paul Lambert had to make one enforced change from the Villa side that opened with a win against Arsenal on Saturday, as Ciaran Clark came in for the injured Nathan Baker.

Chelsea started with plenty of intent and caused the Villa backline plenty of trouble, and they were rewarded with the breakthrough after just six minutes.

Oscar threaded a through-ball into the path of Eden Hazard on the left-hand side of the box and his curling effort was saved by Brad Guzan only to unluckily rebound off Luna and into the back of the net.

After scarcely touching the ball in the opening 20 minutes, Villa finally started to settle into the game. They had their first glimpse of goal in the 22nd minute when Benteke picked up the ball in midfield and the Belgian laid into the path of Karim El Ahmadi but his long-range effort went harmlessly wide.

But Chelsea's inability to convert possession into goals cost them dearly deep into first-half stoppage time.

Gabriel Agbonlahor beat Ivanovic for pace on the left and picked out Benteke, who took one touch before firing home a left-foot strike that squeezed inside Petr Cech's near post.

The second half continued in a similar fashion with Chelsea enjoying the majority of the play but unable to break down a stubborn Villa defence.

And they were nearly punished in the 61st minute when Matthew Lowton broke on the right and played a pass along the floor that Benteke stepped over before Agbonlahor hit a first-time strike that curled just over the crossbar.

Just two minutes later and Villa once more came desperately close.

Benteke picked up the ball on the left and crossed deep to the far post where Andreas Weimann connected well with a right-foot volley but he was denied by a smart save from Cech.

Chelsea made a double change with Andre Schurrle and Romelu Lukaku replacing Mata and Ba.

And the changes sparked the home side into life when Ivanovic found the breakthrough in the 73rd minute.

Lampard played a teasing outswinging free-kick from the right and the Serbian timed his run well to head beyond Guzan.

There was almost time for one more twist when Weimann hit a half-volley from Benteke's assist but he was thwarted by Cech.

Chelsea now turn to their attention to Monday's trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Lambert's side welcome Liverpool to Villa Park on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona: Neymar denies hosts victory

    308176hp2.jpg

A first Barcelona goal from Neymar denied Atletico Madrid a hard earned win over the Liga champions as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first-leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday.

The Brazilian's 66th-minute header cancelled out David Villa's opener at the Estadio Vicente Calderon to set up a tantalising second leg.

Villa's goal was also his first for his new club and came against his former side but Barcelona will go into the return tie on August 28 with the upper hand.

Whether Barca superstar Lionel Messi is available for that clash, however, remains to be seen after he came off at half-time with a suspected hamstring injury.

It was Villa who struck with the first real chance of the game as his brilliant finish put Atleti ahead on 12 minutes.

A sweeping counterattack led to Villa playing a clever pass out wide to Arda Turan and the Turkey international returned the ball to his 31-year-old team-mate.

Just inside the area, Villa's volley was exquisitely controlled and found the bottom corner for his first goal for los Rojiblancos.

Barcelona characteristically controlled possession but struggled to create much against a well-drilled Atletico defence.

Making matters worse for Barca, Messi made way at half-time and was replaced by Cesc Fabregas.

The former Arsenal captain went close to an equaliser four minutes into the second half, moments after Alexis Sanchez was denied by Thibaut Courtois in a one-on-one.

After the Chilean's effort was kept out, he set up Fabregas, who was unable to get a shot away under a last-ditch tackle from Turan.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between for Barca and Andres Iniesta tried his luck from range but his effort was comfortably saved by Courtois.

Diego Costa forced Victor Valdes into a save on the hour-mark before Barcelona equalised through Neymar six minutes later.

The Brazil star had been introduced just seven minutes before he headed in a Dani Alves cross at the back post, after the right-back exchanged passes with Xavi.

Alves' cross was perfectly weighted and Courtois was unable to get across quick enough to keep the header out at his near post.

Barcelona looked the more likely to find a winner and saw Xavi curl a free-kick just over on 72 minutes.

Courtois came out quickly to block a Sanchez shot at the back post minutes later as the visitors took control of the contest.

A tired-looking home side were pinned back into their defensive half but they remained compact enough to keep Barcelona at bay and set up an intriguing second leg at Camp Nou.

    :(Barcelona suffer Messi injury scare

    308173_heroa.jpg

Barcelona face an anxious wait to determine the severity of Lionel Messi's hamstring injury after he was forced to come off at the end of the first half in the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

A first Blaugrana goal for Neymar cancelled out David Villa's opener for Atleti in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday, but Messi's withdrawal at the break marred the visitors' spirited fightback.

"Messi has been replaced as a precaution following some discomfort in the back of the left thigh," read a Tweet on the club's official Twitter stream during the game.

The Argentina international will now undergo further tests on Thursday which will reveal the full extent of his problem, with supporters no doubt hoping he hasn't suffered the same problem that kept him out of the end of last season.

Messi sustained a hamstring injury in the first-leg of Barcelona's Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

He then appeared as a substitute in the second leg to inspire Barca to victory, but the 26-year-old only aggravated the injury further and sat out the final three games of the campaign with the Liga title already secured.

Arsenal set to make £40million bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema

    177089127.jpg

Arsenal are set to make a club-record £40million bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema as Arsene Wenger looks to appease angry supporters.

The Gunners boss, who saw his side thrash Fenerbahce on Wednesday night, is determined to add to his squad before the transfer window shuts on September 2.
And after giving up on trying to land Liverpool hitman Luis Suarez, attention has turned to Madrid striker Benzema.

According to reports, Arsenal will lodge a £40million offer for the 25-year-old this week, and believe a deal could happen. The transfer would delight frustrated fans who booed Wenger and his side off at the weekend, following their 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates.

Arsenal have so far only managed to bring in youngster Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre, but at least three new signings is the aim in the final stages of the window. As well as Benzema, Wenger will also hope to land Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, and a new goalkeeper – with Valencia’s Vicente Guaita a key target.
