Manchester United enter race for Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil

The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday and although David Moyes remained bullish in the aftermath, are believed to have made contact with Ozil's representatives.Arsenal, who have drawn criticism for their own lack of activity in the transfer market, were rumoured to be at an 'advanced' stage of a transfer worth around £42.5m - but United now seem poised to hijack the move.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said in the aftermath of Sunday's 1-0 victory over Tottenham: "It is a little bit like a domino game. Maybe something will happen in the last 24 hours, maybe not. It is very difficult to predict, but maybe we can surprise you."

Ozil, 24, signed for Real from Werder Bremen in 2010 in a deal worth around 15m euros but may find his chances of first-team football at the Bernabeu limited by Gareth Bale's world record signing.Although reports in Spain suggest Ozil is unfazed by the Welshman's arrival and remains determined to stay on and fight for his place, Real manager Carlo Ancelotti has welcomed approaches from the Premier League.

In addition, Ancelotti's former employers Paris St Germain are expected to make a move for Ozil, who has won 47 caps for his country.

Arsenal close to deal for Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil

    Mesut-Ozil_2994961.jpg

Arsenal are close to sealing the signing of Germany attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in a dramatic transfer deadline day swoop, Sky Sports understands.

The Spanish giants are thought to have accepted a £42.5m bid and sources at a hospital in Germany claim Ozil is already undergoing a Gunners medical there.

The 24-year-old, who joined Real in 2010 from Werder Bremen for 15m euros, is set to become the first through the Bernabeu exit door following the world record-breaking arrival of Gareth Bale from Tottenham.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said in the aftermath of Sunday's 1-0 victory over Spurs: "It is a little bit like a domino game. Maybe something will happen in the last 24 hours, maybe not. It is very difficult to predict, but maybe we can surprise you."

Reports earlier on Monday suggested Manchester United may launch a last-gasp attempt to hijack the move, having looked toothless going forward during a lacklustre 1-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

However, with the Red Devils rubbishing those reports and despite additional interest from French champions Paris St Germain, it appears increasingly likely that Wenger is on the brink of his first major signing of the summer.

Ozil may not be the only player arriving at The Emirates before the 11pm deadline - the club are also rumoured to be chasing Ozil's Real team-mates Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema, Chelsea striker Demba Ba and Palermo goalkeeper Emilliano Viviano.
