    Cannavaro rejected Milan, says agent

    253554_heroa.jpg

Paolo Cannavaro's agent has confirmed that the Napoli skipper turned down the opportunity to join AC Milan on deadline day.

The defender has been a regular for the Partenopei since signing from Parma in 2006, but he has started Rafael Benitez's reign at the Serie A giants on the bench.

Milan offered Cannavaro an escape route on Monday but - according to the club skipper's representative, Gaetano Fedele - the 32-year-old is keen to fight for his place at the San Paolo.

"There was an offer from Milan which was to exchange Paolo for Cristian Zaccardo," Fedele told ITA Sport Press.

"However, Paolo wanted to remain a Napoli player and we hope he can become an integral part of the project."

Cannavaro will be hoping to feature in Napoli's next game after the international break against Atalanta on September 15 following back-to-back wins in their opening two 2013-14 Serie A results.

Del Bosque: Casillas still my No.1

    307068_heroa.jpg

Vicente del Bosque has lent some much needed support to Spain international goalkeeper Iker Casillas, insisting he is still the country's No.1.

The Real Madrid legend has begun the campaign as backup to Diego Lopez in the Blancos goal, with new boss Carlo Ancelotti continuing the precedent set by Jose Mourinho.

Casillas has yet to feature in any of Madrid's three Liga fixtures so far this season, but Del Bosque says the 32-year-old is still very much the main man when it comes to the national team.

"Iker Casillas will always have me by his side." Del Bosque is quoted as saying in AS.

"Casillas is captain of the side and an important part of our team."

The 149-capped Spain international has not played for Madrid since fracturing his hand at the start of this year.

But a lack of involvement for club has not jeopardised his place in the national team, and that looks set to remain the case with Del Bosque reiterating his faith in his skipper.

"I would never say he has to play at Madrid. I am in favour of Casillas, in favour of his history and his trajectory," he added.

"He is going through a bad time and needs the support of those who have respect and admiration.

"It's not a comfortable situation for anyone, but mostly it is uncomfortable for him. But having said that, I am not going against anyone, only going in favour of Casillas."

The reigning world and European champions face a World Cup qualifier away to Finland on Friday, before a friendly meeting with Chile in Geneva on Tuesday.

Pepe Reina and Victor Valdes are the other goalkeepers named in Del Bosque's 23-man Roja squad.

:cool:Van Persie: I will play for another 10 years

    304578_heroa.jpg

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie believes that he has what it takes to play for another 10 years.

The Netherlands international, 30 years old, is confident that next summer's World Cup in Brazil will not be his final major tournament for Oranje.

"We want to do better over there then at the European [Championships]," he told NUSport. "At least, I want that, and after that I want to do it better again. That's how I am.

"The World Cup won't be my last big tournament. I've never had a major injury, hardly any muscle problems. I will play for another 10 years."

The former Arsenal man cites the influence of Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs as a source of motivation in prolonging his playing career.

"Yes, serious, that's my goal when I feel myself like I do now," he continued. "It's a drive for me when I see Ryan Giggs train every day fantastic and play fantastic."

Bayern Munich: Javi Martinez set for groin surgery

    311456_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has received some disappointing news on the injury front as he could be without the services of Javi Martinez who may have to undergo groin surgery.

The Spain international has been pestered by groin problems for a number of weeks now and Bayern's medical staff have advised an operation to remedy the issue.

"I don't have any problems when I play 20 to 30 minutes, but that's when it's getting painful again," the 25-year-old said after his side's Uefa Super Cup win over Chelsea last week.

A final decision on whether Martinez will undergo surgery will be made on Tuesday, with the holding midfielder facing two to three weeks on the sidelines if he opts to go under the knife.

Bayern have been tormented by injury in midfield in recent months as Thiago Alcantara and Bastian Schweinsteiger are both unavailable.

:(Manchester United fail in late Coentrao deal

    311538_heroa.jpg

Manchester United failed in a loan deal for Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao after making a dramatic move late on Monday evening as the transfer window drew to a close.

The Premier League champions were able to wrap up a £27.5 million deal for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini just before the deadline passed but their paperwork was not completed in time to ratify the agreement.

It is thought that David Moyes's side agreed a season-long loan for the Portuguese international despite Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti stating on Sunday that Coentrao would be staying at the Samtoagp Bernabeu.

However, complications have arisen due to the deadlines regarding paperwork submission with Fifa's Transfer Market System, with one or both clubs thought not to have ratified the deal with Fifa in time.

Tottenham were continually linked with Coentrao throughout the summer window as part of Gareth Bale's world-record move to Spain, but Andre Villas-Boas's side instead received an €100 million cash-only deal for the Welshman.

United missed out on a big-money move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera after failing to meet the €36m release clause, capping a frustrating window for Moyes in which he has seen deals for Barcelona duo Thiago and Cesc Fabregas slip away.

Moratti: Milan signing Kaka an excellent move

    312692_heroa.jpg

Inter president Massimo Moratti has hailed AC Milan's decision to bring back Kaka to Serie A after four years at Real Madrid.

The Rossoneri completed the signing of the Brazilian on a free transfer on Monday, with the 31-year-old agreeing a two-year deal with Milan.

"The decision to bring back Kaka is an excellent move by Milan," Moratti was quoted as saying on the official Inter website.

"As for sticking to tradition, it's for them to decide [whether Kaka is still of added value], so I'll pass no judgement on that.

"But I'm glad we'll see Kaka playing in Italy again."

Kaka made 193 Serie A appearances for Milan between 2003 and 2009, netting 70 goals.

Bale cannot afford to fail, insists Ronaldo

    293800_heroa.jpg

Former Brazil international Ronaldo has insisted that Gareth Bale cannot afford to put in any below-par performances for Real Madrid as the club's fans will expect him to be on top of his game every match following his €100 million move.

The Welshman completed his world record transfer from Tottenham to Madrid on Monday and Ronaldo has warned the 24-year-old that the pressure will be immense.

"It is only normal that, whenever he puts in a poor performance, the fans will remind him that the club paid €100m for him," Ronaldo told Radio Barcelona.

"I can only recommend to Bale that he does not let his price tag become an obsession."

Ronaldo also had his say on Neymar's summer move to Barcelona and believes that his compatriot will become a better player at the Catalans.

"Playing in Europe and for Barcelona will benefit Neymar. He will learn a lot in Spain," he continued.

"Teaming up with [Lionel] Messi will make him a better player. It will be good for Brazil's national team, too. Brazilian players coming to Europe tend to do well."

Neymar has so far made five official appearances for Barca, scoring once.

Demichelis: Life has made me a fighter

    292699_heroa.jpg

Martin Demichelis says his hard upbringing in life has made him a fighter and he intends on repaying the faith shown in him by long-time friend and Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini.

The tough-tackling Argentina international was brought into the Etihad Stadium by Pellegrini as cover for the injured Vincent Kompany.

The 32-year-old is willing to put in the required effort to secure a a first-team slot at City, telling the Manchester Evening News: "Life has made me a fighter, because of my principles and because of where I came from.

"I have struggled in life and those difficulties define me. I am a hard worker."

Demichelis is looking forward to linking up with manager Pellegrini for a third time in his career following successful spells working together in Argentina and Spain.

"There's a mutual trust and respect between us," the defender remarked of the Chilean. "We have known each other for many years and worked together at River Plate, where we became champions.

"We worked together again at Malaga for two successful years and now life has given us a third chance .

"Manuel was an important part in this. He trusts in me after those two years at Malaga. I want to repay on the pitch the confidence shown by the club and the coaching staff."

Everton confirm deals for McCarthy and Barry

    278340_heroa.jpg

Everton have completed the signing of Wigan midfielder James McCarthy for £13 million, as well as adding Manchester City veteran Gareth Barry on a season-long loan deal.

The Toffees have had a busy transfer deadline day, bringing in three new faces - McCarthy, Barry and Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku - while offloading Marouane Fellaini and Victor Anichebe.

"Roberto Martinez moved to boost his midfield by signing James McCarthy from his own former club Wigan Athletic," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The highly-rated 22-year-old arrives with an impressive reputation as one of the game's brightest young talents."

Wigan owner Dave Whelan had earlier blasted Everton's initial bid for the Republic of Ireland international, but revealed that the two clubs had eventually reached an agreement over the pay structure of the deal.

"They've been realistic and have matched our valuation. They are going to pay us much, much quicker than they said they would earlier," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It's now up to them and they have to try and get it through. If he goes, he goes, and we wish him all the best, if it doesn't go through then I hope he'll play as normal for Wigan."

Barry, meanwhile, has joined on a temporary basis after finding first-team opportunities hard to come by at the Etihad Stadium.

"The final piece of the deadline day jigsaw sees England international and Premier League and FA Cup winner Gareth Barry arrive from Manchester City.

"The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the Everton midfield having also played for Aston Villa in the Premier League."

Chelsea confirm Lukaku loan move to Everton

    298136_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have confirmed that striker Romelu Lukaku has joined Everton on a season-long loan move.

Goal revealed on Monday evening that the 20-year-old forward had agreed to move to Goodison Park, and was in Merseyside to sign the necessary paperwork.

The Belgium international will bolster Roberto Martinez's attacking options after Marouane Fellaini completed a late move to Manchester United and Victor Anichebe went to West Brom.

"Romelu Lukaku will spend a second season on loan at a Barclays Premier League club with a move to Everton completed," the west London club announced on their official website.

"The 20-year-old striker's season at Goodison Park will follow on from a year of significant progress at West Bromwich Albion when he featured in 38 games and scored 17 goals, becoming the highest-scoring teenager in the Premier League since Michael Owen in 1998/99."

Lukaku himself confirmed the deal earlier on his official Twitter account stating: "Signed @Everton on a season loan", with Everton also announcing the loan of the 'powerful striker' on their website.

Martinez made his move for Lukaku after Demba Ba's proposed loan move to Arsenal fell through despite prolonged negotiations on Monday.

Lukaku has not started any of Chelsea's four matches this season despite a successful loan spell at West Brom in 2012-13 - and Baggies boss Steve Clarke unsuccessfully attempted to bring the forward back to the Hawthorns again late on Monday.

With Jose Mourinho signing Samuel Eto'o from Anzhi Makhachkala to provide competition for Fernando Torres and Ba, options would have been limited for Lukaku at Stamford Bridge this season.

Bebe joins Pacos de Ferreira on loan

    115492_heroa.jpg

Pacos de Ferreira have confirmed they have completed the loan signing of Bebe from Manchester United.

The winger joins the Portuguese club on a temporary deal for the remainder of the 2013-14 campaign having struggled to break into the first-team set-up under David Moyes, and previous manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bebe joined Manchester United from Vitoria de Guimaraes back in 2010 although has only managed a total of seven appearances for the club in three years, and spent the last campaign on loan at Rio Ave.

Pacos de Ferreira are currently 14th in the Portuguese Primeira Liga having lost their opening three games of the season, while the club were also knocked out of the Champions League at the play-off round by Zenit following an 8-3 aggregate scoreline.

Bebe is not the only fringe player to leave Old Trafford on loan on deadline day, with Championship outfit Wigan Athletic completing a switch for England Under-21 star Nick Powell, while Davide Petrucci has sealed a move to Royal Antwerp.

    Eriksen eyes Champions League berth

    311432_heroa.jpg

Tottenham new-boy Christian Eriksen has revealed he is targeting a top-three finish and European qualification with the north London club after completing his move from Ajax on Friday.

Andre Villas-Boas thrashed out a deal to bring the player to White Hart Lane as the club’s seventh signing of the summer, as they look to re-build the squad following the record-breaking sale of Gareth Bale.

Spurs finished one point behind local rivals Arsenal in their pursuit for the final Champions League place last season, but the Denmark international harbours ambitions to finish in the top-three this term.

"I have played Champions League for the past four years at Ajax and I know what it is about," the attacking midfielder told Spurs TV.

"It's the best place to be and it's the funnest part to play football, so of course everyone wants that and me too. I think [my target is] what everyone wants to come: one of the top three or maybe on the top.

"I think every game's going to be like a Champions League game for me. That's what I want and that's why I moved, because I want every game to be exciting and I am really excited."

The 21-year-old is delighted to be joining a club on the up, and revealed that former Ajax team-mate Jan Vertonghen helped him make his decision to join Tottenham.

He continued: "I spoke to him a few times – he’s a really good guy. From what I have heard he is one of the funny guys here. He is a really good guy and of course I've talked with him a few times.

"I think everybody has followed the development from the Spurs and it only goes up. That's what I want be a part of, because I know there have not been many Danes here.

"It's really exciting when you see how many people they are getting, of course and I am one of them. It's really exciting and the club is going up and the players also, so I want to be a part of [it] and it's good."

Manchester United to launch internal inquest into summer transfer failures

    304500_heroa.jpg

Manchester United officials including David Moyes and assistant vice chairman Ed Woodward will conduct a special internal inquest into the club's disastrous summer transfer dealings, Goal can reveal.

The Old Trafford outfit completed the £27.5 million signing of Marouane Fellaini in the final minutes of the transfer window on Monday - their only major deal of the summer.

But United's inability to secure other marquee targets this summer, including Spanish trio Thiago, Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera - over whom the club enquired about on deadline day - has led to senior club figures preparing an informal investigation into what went wrong.

It is thought that the club will look to use the international break to analyse their summer dealings, ahead of the players returning to training before hosting Crystal Palace on September 14.

Moyes, who remained at the club's Carrington training base late into Monday night to ensure the signing of Fellaini was completed before the 23.00BST deadline, has earmarked a number of potential incomings in recent months but saw all but the Belgian fall by the wayside.

Thiago, who joined former boss Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, had been the subject of talks between United and Barcelona in July, with the Red Devils keen to add a central midfielder to their ranks following Paul Scholes's retirement and the ongoing illness of Darren Fletcher.

Moyes also publicly declared an interest in signing Fabregas from Camp Nou but saw the former Arsenal star commit his future to the Catalan giants, with United having had two bids for the midfielder rejected.

The Premier League champions also saw a deadline day offer for Leighton Baines rebuffed by Everton chairman Bill Kenwright, who maintained the full-back was not for sale throughout the summer.

As such, United brought in only two players over the summer, with 20-year-old Uruguayan Guillermo Varela the only other arrival alongside Fellaini at Old Trafford.

:cool:Premier League clubs spend a record £630m in summer transfer window

    312477_heroa.jpg

Premier League clubs combined spent a record £630 million [€743m] in the summer 2013 transfer window, according to analysis by business advisory firm Deloitte.

Mesut Ozil was the most expensive arrival in the Premier League. The Germany international signed for Arsenal from Real Madrid for a club record €47m, the second largest transfer fee ever for a Premier League club, while Tottenham sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world-record fee of €100m.

"The story of this summer transfer window is of new records: a new record for Premier League spending as well as a new world transfer record fee," said Dan Jones at Deloitte.

"Whilst the sale of Gareth Bale brought £85m [€100m] into the Premier League, net spending is also a record, at £400m [€472m]. As the financial rewards for participation and success in the Premier League increase, so it follows that clubs are investing on the pitch to ensure they continue to benefit from the remarkable Premier League growth story."

Premier League clubs have greater funds at their disposal with cash from their latest domestic three-year TV deal. BT Sport has spent £738m [€871m] over three years for the rights to 38 live matches a season, while Sky paid £2.3 billion [€2.7bn] for 116 matches a season.

Alex Thorpe, consultant at Deloitte, added: “This is the first year that Premier League clubs will benefit financially from the league's new broadcast deals; each club benefitting from a share of the extra £600m [€708m] of revenues in 2013-14 alone.

"Testament to the impact this is having is in the scale of Premier League gross spending, as well as the gulf in net spending between the Premier League and other European leagues.

"Whereas many clubs around Europe have been reliant on selling players in order to spend, the financial advantages Premier League clubs enjoy has enabled net spending of £400m [€472m] across the league.

"Many clubs, including new entrants to the league, have successfully competed in the European transfer market to attract high profile foreign talent."

After the Premier League, the next highest spenders were La Liga and Serie A, each with a gross spend of £335m [€395m], followed by Ligue 1 with £315m [€372m] and the Bundesliga with £230m [€272m].

Mesut Ozil was sold to Arsenal due to his poor goal-scoring record, according to ex-Germany international Oliver Kahn.

"Mesut Ozil failed to make himself indispensable at Real
    Madrid,"

"Last season, he only scored nine goals in La Liga - in his position, behind the attackers, this is not enough. Especially if you consider that it's normal for Real Madrid to score a combined 100 goals per season.

"Those who want to survive at a club like Real must prove themselves in every match and show that they're the best of the best.

"It will be interesting to watch if Ozil can prevail in the English Premier League with his filigree way of playing."
